Loretta Lynn's home place is located in butcher holler, Van Lear Kentucky.
Loretta Lynn (née Webb; born April 14, 1932)[2] is an American singer-songwriter. In a career which spans six decades in country music, Lynn has released multiple gold albums. She had hits such as "You Ain't Woman Enough (To Take My Man)", "Don't Come Home A-Drinkin' (With Lovin' on Your Mind)", "One's on the Way", "Fist City" and "Coal Miner's Daughter". In 1980, the film Coal Miner's Daughter was made based on her life.
Incorporated in 1912, the town was named for a director of Consolidation Coal Company
Van Lear Black. It owes its existence to the viable efforts of John Caldwell Calhoun Mayo. Mayo bought coal rights to land along Miller's Creek in Johnson County, which he later sold to Northern Coal and Coke, which in turn was later acquired by Consol.
Also: They allowed me to only video because they knew my attentions.
They didn't want me to be in there face with the camera and asked me not video or add everything
so with that being said I didn't add everything and I did my best to keep them out of the video much as possible.
don't expect to be able to video if you go cause they don't allow it.
DO NOT ENTER ANY MINES WITHOUT A PROFESSIONAL!
Mines are extremely dangerous!

I was born and raised in Clay County KY. My Dad and his family was from Floyd County. My Dad worked in the coal mines his whole life . My Mamaw's house was at Drift in Floyd County and back in the 90s we raised a big garden with her. One day after working hard picking green beans my Mother, my niece and me decided to take a break and travel to Butcher Holler in Johnson County to see Loretta's homeplace. Herman Webb saw us as we were driving past his store and he followed us up to the homeplace. He was very handsome and so polite and so gracious. Herman took us inside the little house and we had such a wonderful visit with him. When it was time to go we all went outside to get in our car and I'll be darned if we didn't have a flat tire. Herman changed that flat tire for us that day. I will never forget Herman Webb and his kindness. I know that Herman, Loretta,Clara,Ted and the rest of the family who have passed are in heaven and I bet they are all singing together once again.

Like so many other families that were living this very same lifestyle in Kentucky and West Virginia the mountains and the people are special. They lived a hard life but they were good people who helped one another and shared what they had with each other. This is humble beginnings that you will never forget. Not everyone got to become famous but the ones who did were still humble in their entire lives because they never forgot where they came from. I’m from these humble people who still love their mountain life and are thankful to have been a part of it. This home was a reflection of many people who are fortunate enough to have lived in this type of beginnings. ❤❤❤

Grew up in WV. Custer Holler, Lost creek, WV. Lived by struggles. welfare, our water source was a tiny creek running alongside the 118yr old house we lived in. washing clothes, wash board and then one day dad came home with an old 1940s washer with a ringer on the top. we were dirt poor, and rode our horses, walked 1/4 mile just to catch a school bus and bought second- hand clothes with a welfare voucher. kids always were mean to me, and my siblings cause of looks and clothes. I now own a home in WV and will retire there soon. God bless Loretta Lynn for your music contributions. Mom was from Paducah!

I grew playing in the #5 mine every one use to get their water out of a pipe that stuck out of the hill past the drift mouth. Everyone had city water but the water ran out of a limestone seam and it was ice cold even in the hottest days of summer. We played all over it and shade ward hollow and butcher to. My mother went to school in that 1 room school house. The main road brings you out in three different places in Johnson county and is a scenic drive. Herman and patsy were outstanding people and were well loved. I went and visited every chance I got time to. Thank you for giving other folks a glimpse of our community.

I was raised at the tip of Appalachia in north Mississippi. My alcoholic father kicked me out when I was 15 & I ended up getting a job on a large farm. Part of the deal was I could move into one of the many old houses that were there. It was a former plantation & those buildings were old slave quarters that had naked electric wiring with no conduit put in them. No running water or any kind of plumbing. I worked sun up until sundown driving a tractor. I had a heater that froze me to death in the winter. I had to hitchhike on my days off to town to former schoolmates homes where I could shower if their parents okayed it. No gov benefits to pay any bills because I was underage. Child labor laws in Mississippi? LOL It was one of the roughest parts of my life but I learned a lot about dedication and a good work ethic. I was living in history at the moment with newspaper still on the walls from being used as insulation but I was young and was unable to appreciate it. The tin roof would lull you to sleep when it was raining. And when it stormed any conversation couldn't be heard. I miss that so much that I'm an old man now. But it sure was tough while it was going on.

ATTENTION: Those that are wondering why I didn't Record the whole tour... basically the Last time someone made a video there they tried to make the people of that area look dumb. But luckily for me I got to because they knew my attentions was the exact opposite. They asked me not to record everything because if people watched the whole tour they wouldn't be interested in visiting. They also didn't want me to have the camera in their face the whole time. But Since they allowed me to video I respected their request to not video everything and to keep them out of the video much as possible. if you want to see the whole tour well...we'll.... GO VISIT. I recommend it. So much better than my video and you get to actually talk yo Lorettas neace and nephew and ask them all kinds of questions.

MAN! This was so cool!! Thanks for this! Especially the visit to the coal mine and the school house. The actual one room cabin where Loretta was born is still standing somewhere over there too. Cannot remember the exact location but it is still standing!

I have answered this already multiple times.. but I understand if you haven't seen it. So basically she didn't want me to be in her face with the camera and neither did Lorettas nephew. I know I didn't explain that in the video like I should but I also didn't want to the video to have bunch of words explaining everything. But everything I done in the video is totally fine with them. I actually got to sit with her for 2 hours after the tour closed and talk to her. Lovely people.

@@rickykaren oh yea I didn't see that my bad, and that's very cool you not only got to visit there but also go to talk to them personally. Forgive me for what I said I had no idea was just going by what I saw in the video so I do apologize. I'll re edit my comment. Hope you have a happy Thanksgiving. And again I do apologize.

They were a close family, and they loved each other. There family was built on Love 😘💞, you don't see that kind of family love anymore. I don't believe there were any black people around them, because you have never heard Loretta Lynn talk about any black people,so they must have been so far in the mountains where black people didn't go are didn't even know about mountain people.

*COAL MINER'S DAWTAH is a unique song in that it rhymes the two words hard and tired. "In the daytime the work was hard, at night we slept 'cuz we were tarred." No mention was made if she was feathered or not.*

My grandfather was a coal miner in eastern KY lost a leg in the mine. Since he couldn’t work in the mines anymore he went west with a wife and 6 kids to CA. When she mentioned the last name of Blair my ears perked up I have numberious Blairs in my ancestry. Its sad that that dress is so dirty in the store. But it would probably fall apart if cleaned with its age.

Adjusted for inflation, the $328 that was stolen from the store would be $9,145 in 2022 dollars. That had to hurt bad. I wonder if they had insurance for things like that back then? The article said they arrested 2 men. I hope they were able to recover all that money.
