Lori Vallow and her defense sat on the left side of the courtroom facing the judge at a 90-degree angle during the first official day of the trial in Boise, Idaho on April 10.
FOX 10's Justin Lum was in the second row right behind the sketch artist, with a clear view of Lori. She wore a white blouse under a black blazer. She wore her glasses and lipstick.
In opening statements, Fremont County Prosecuting Attorney Lindsey Blake provided a roadmap to the 18 jurors. Blake said that Lori was motivated by “money, power and sex” and would remove any obstacle in her way to get what she wanted, and she wanted was Chad Daybell.
We learned several new developments in the opening statements. Prosecutors say Tylee’s DNA was recovered from a pickaxe in Daybell’s shed, and the prosecution confirms that Tammy Daybell died of asphyxiation at the hands of someone else.
It was then the defense's turn. They claim Lori has alibis during the murders.
She was in her apartment when the kids were allegedly killed in the apartment of her late brother Alex. According to the defense, Lori was in Hawaii with her niece and friend when Tammy died.
The first witness to testify was Kay Woodcock, the biological grandmother of JJ Vallow. She described Lori as a “doting mother” but she lost touch with Vallow after her brother Charles was shot and killed by Alex.
The second witness was Brandon Boudreaux, the ex-husband of Lori's niece Melani Pawlowski. He says his then-wife became extremely religious and wanted to be like Lori.
He told the court about being shot at in Gilbert in October 2019 by a suspect police believe was Alex.
“And I remember distinctly inside of these groups there were these emails being sent with a group of them and so I went back to look at these emails Charles had sent me from there and most of them came from Chad Daybell and since I didn’t know who he was, I started Googling his name,” he said in court.

From his e-mail account appearing on Kay’s computer to making Brandon aware of the Jeep’s VIN, Charles protected & warned people he loved, even after he was murdered by those threatening them. He’s a hero in this tragedy, imo

No doubt,..Loris evil black siren spirit swooned the Az police dept that handled the before & the aftermath of Charles death,..he literally begged the police dept to do something to protect not just himself but his step children and the man even still loved & honored his witch of a wife at least to the extent of caring for Loris well being,..but Charles was abandoned by every single person in his life as well as the judicial system and his local police dept,..his basic human rights were not protected or even given or valued at every level,..this man paid the ultimate price w his own life! Total & gross neglect & incopentece of massive porportions!!! Such a tragedy esp since if Charles had been taken more serious as it should've been investigated & followed thru w all parties and if so then maybe Tammy,Jj & Tylee would still be alive & well! There needs to be other following arrests & accountability of all agencies that 1000% dropped the ball literally on all of the vallow daybell cults victims!!!

How was she supposed to resist Daybell's rugged good looks, and un-toned sweaty body he was awesome the bedroom? His image is plastered on the covers of LDS romance novels. His NY Times best sellers with a large raccoon ranch and pet cemetery in Idaho. He was to die for. She was after all a contestant on Wheel of Fortune and voted most likely to kill her husband at the Mrs. Texas beauty pageant. Her "normal" oldest Netflix son "Colbs" was arrested soon after on domestic abuse charges. Her comic killer brother Al is sadly absent from these proceedings but is surely looking over her from his own planet somewhere in the Celestial Kingdom. Poor Charles may be a "dark" zombie, but he died trying to get his kids away from the psycho he married. This prosecutor gave a terrific opening, leaving the witnesses to fill in the blanks of a story that could only be true. (Must have nodded off during the defense, but what can he say or do? He knows he brought a knife to a gunfight) If this isn't a death penalty case, what the hell are they waiting for? A more heinous crime? Good luck finding that, if Fabio Daybell gets the needle so should she. This was planned by the Mrs., all that fat goof was thinking was he'd landed himself a trophy wife not knowing it was only for participation. I'm mad, this should've been televised. 😡

Yes. But, to me, the defense attorney sounds like a nice reasonable man. These public defenders do the best they can under the circumstances for which they are given.

His objections are reasonable-ish but the photo thing was ridiculous, states evidence is something he sees to prepare for and I'm like dude, it's clearly tylee, quit reaching. No one's trying to say he took the damn photo. But as a public defender I feel bad for him, it's got to be hard defending someone who thinks they're one of only a few Supreme beings.

I do not say this lightly but defense opening statement may be the worst I have ever heard before. If he is trying to get the jury to like or feel bad for his client, I hope the jury is smarter than that and base their decision on the evidence.

I want to thank you for your intelligent, insightful, professional and personable coverage of this difficult case. In the intervening years between the disappearance of the children and the eventual arrest of the defendants, I have come to depend on you and the East Idaho News for up to date and factual information. You have pursued so many different avenues following the strange twists to bring us this story. While I was disappointed with the judges decision against video broadcast of the trial, I understand the dilemma. The facts are so salacious and the coverage sensationalized it can create a problem in the administration of justice. No one wants to see an overturned verdict. Social media commentary with such emotionally triggering subject matter could leave the door ajar and invite a reconsideration of any jury verdict. With that understanding, I am grateful to have eyes and ears that I can trust bringing trial to me. Please thank the powers that be for posting the audio as well as your excellent eye witness coverage. You have an exceptional talent, thank you for sharing it with those of us who cannot be there. I will be following you daily to see this unbelievable sad event to its conclusion.

Defense Lawyer Thomas is a bona fide goon who throughout the first week or so of this trial errantly tried to apply ID Rule 16 B 6 to dismiss witnesses, even though the judge clearly explained multiple times that he is misinterpreting the rule. Thomas strikes me as someone who does passive aggressive, underhanded things just to grate the nerves of the people around him. He must love turmoil. I guess he chose the right profession LOL.

Defense lawyer voice is horrible He presented no defense he don't Have to. The prosecution dropped Lori will not face the death penalty. Due to there negligence. While i don't know the law but Judge Boyce i believe is gonna Give the jury some weird instructions which would cause Lori to go free. Opening remarks Were not great for either side. I'm just feeling like lori is gonna Get away with this. The defense May win this case on technical Issue.....

I am pretty stinkin disappointed in what the prosecution sounds like. This case calls for the absolute smartest, and most aggressive prosecutor they got. This female sounds weak and she keeps stammering.....this case is unbelievable, someone better make the jury believe it!!!!

Utter evil. She killed 2 innocent children, her biological 16 year old daughter Tylee and 7 year old adopted son J.J and was at least heavily involved in the killing of two others. She justified her actions with her own insane beliefs that she and her new lover Chad came up with.
