I've lived in Los Angeles for decades. Unfortunately, career politicians have done nothing for the city. The only person on the stage that offered to hold himself accountable and wasn't a career politician is Caruso. He also held off attacks the whole debate with a sense of humor while Karen, the presumed frontrunner and career politician, barely said a word the whole time. She also said I could easily get elected to the House but I am doing this for you. It was pretty narcissistic.

Housing the homeless doesn’t fix addiction
@suzanneengland8978
@suzanneengland8978 2 жыл бұрын
I don’t think just building a bunch of cheap housing is the answer. Many are addicts and/or alcoholics, mentally ill, drug dealers, people flocking to LA for the weather and benefits. Will you build housing that turns into the old style “projects”? We need mental facilities. We need FEMA to step in, maybe build temporary camps with facilities, like they did after Katrina, that include social workers to transition these people. Clean up our streets, our public transit so that they are safe & CLEAN. This isn’t about clearing a path for more construction.

Not sure what these politicians have done to make it safe in the last years but I can say growing up I never walked alone home. Always looked behind my back. So I say more police. If you are not doing any crime why are you afraid to be stopped? Why are you afraid of the police ? Why are young kids out after 8p alone? My parents never let us out of our home because drive by in the day. Back early 2000s I got jumped by a bunch of Jordan down kids when I was 16. Reform the people, educate families on discipline and working hard, my family came as immigrants and worked hard to get two properties in city of LA that we call a home. Longtime LA resident here. The homeless situation began to rapidly grow during the Reagan admin when he slashed social services, funding for mental hospitals, and other policies that shattered the social safety net. Then in 2006, I believe, the ACLU sued the city of LA on behalf of the homeless, winning the suit and creating the Urban Camping law. It gave homeless permission to camp on any Los Angeles City street between 9pm-6am, not blocking a driveway. The police had their hands tied. Before that, the LAPD used to clear them out. With all the amenities offered to homeless here, combined with the weather, homeless flock to this city. Free tents, easy laws. This has to end.

I wish the people of LA lots of luck. They need a good mayor who will actually tackle all of these problems, while being fought tooth and nail. Whoever wins is going into a hot mess. Letting the homeless crisis get this bad is a top priority. They are all talking about "beds" when many of these people don't put a decent place to sleep above drugs. Many of the drug problems come from mental health problems, so maybe those beds should be in a mental health facility. I also love how I hear someone talking about segregation in the south while stating that LA is segregated also. It may not be the same but it's also not much different...You have Latino neighbors, black neighbors, etc and it can be like a war zone if they clash. That means a different kind of education needs to be taught there, and everywhere else, about how we are alike more than different. Most of them seem likable, most seem to really care, so hopefully whomever wins will make a difference.

@@DeepVerma728 I vehemently and passionately disagree with you! African Americans have a history steeped in discrimination and slavery! Therefore it is not surprising that there have been issues within these communities as an aftermath to all those challenges. Face facts, not all people are able to work! Some people will die without an adequate social safety net. Some suffer from conditions we know nothing about. WHY can we not just accept that and accept the vital necessity for the welfare state to re emerge. Neo liberalism led us here and it failed spectacularly!

@@Lakridza67 We are solving the problem full blown integration. Slave populations are to be absorbed into the dominant society. Translation you're to mix. Been the policy since ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome.

You can tell who the politicians are by the way they’re trying to answer the questions the politically correct way vs with the truth. Homelessness is an issue, but it starts with properly funding the police

Lol, their budget is already the largest of any other agency or institution by far. It starts with actually building affordable housing and not listening to nimbys. None of this crap about beds, people need their own personal space with walls, not a military style barracks.

@@Evettecord how do you figure that out? Certain ‘think tanks’ have had catastrophic input into the current social welfare crisis. It is based on punitive policies that have led to mass homelessness, an over inflated housing market, and mass poverty. Couple this with precarious working conditions in the lower wage earning markets and you get the idea right?!

@@Lakridza67 we need to remove many of the housing restrictions to let builders build more housing. More supply will help w/ pricing. Im also for REzoning vacant commercial property to residential to add to the housing supply. We need to bring back the mental health institutions for our criminally insane. Also, we need institutions for those w/ addiction. That will help a lot

@@Lakridza67 what are your thoughts on lower wage retail workers getting killed during a robbery? It’s been a significant issue in NY

@@Evettecord very little to be honest! I think it’s nothing less than a tragedy. Let me ask you a question. Just to clarify, are you referring to the safety of the retail staff, or are you seeking a deeper explanation? By this, I mean looking at the crime through a social context?

Karen Bass is the best choice. I look forward to watching this debate, but I'm a decades long Angeleno. I already know the track record of everyone on the stage, and debating skills are not the same as government leadership skills. Karen Bass is hands down the best candidate on that stage. Her track record in the state assembly, and in Congress is outstanding. She shares all my values, she fights for all the issues I care about, and she'd be a fantastic LA Mayor.
