When a show has a completely mysterious character like Richard and teases his true identity for literally years on end, its so rare for the payoff to not be completely disappointing, let alone actually exceed expectations imo. Love this episode

I never put it together that the smoke scanning was not checking for good people like we suspect in earlier seasons, but to check if the person can be manipulated. Or at least useful to the MiB. But it makes a ton of sense! Of course he doesn't care about good people. He just wants out.

Fun fact: The priest in this episode is the same actor who plays Nacho's father in Better Call Saul, Juan Carlos Cantu.

That whole “They’re all dead, and they’ve all always been dead,” was a very popular theory that the writers tried to address more than once, including here via Richard. It never quite put an end to the popularity of that theory though.

This was the first episode of Lost I saw, it was on TV and I was bored so I started watching it, by the end I was both delighted and confused as fuck. Then I watched it all from beginning to end, and I love the series to this day.

Not only is this episode 69 but the Pop number of the Man In Black is 420. Nice!😆

Man, one thing I love about this show is how it raises discussions 12 years later. This discussion made me ask a question I'd never really thought about before. Minor spoilers for Rick (and anyone else who hasn't seen the rest of the show) below the space.... Eko's name is on the lighthouse dial, meaning he was a candidate. How then did the Smoke Monster kill him, if he's not allowed to kill candidates directly? My belief around Eko's death is by refuting his "sin" to the Yemi-Smoke Monster, the Smoke Monster realized he could no longer manipulate Eko and thus killed him. But if he's a candidate, there's a rule against that. Does Eko STOP being a candidate somehow? Does his refutation ALSO make him no longer a candidate, because, as we learn from Jacob soon enough, he "needs broken people like him" as candidates? That's why Kate's name is crossed off, right, because she became a mother, stopped running, and was no longer broken? But then that clashes with Jacob's stated goal here in this episode, which Rick summarizes: he wants to prove bad/broken/evil people can be redeemed....except that redeemed people can no longer be candidates to replace him? That's weird, but maybe it all can be written off due to Jacob's own hangups. He wants their redemption to happen, for them to "choose correctly"....but such a person couldn't be someone Jacob would want to pass on his powers to, because Jacob felt himself utterly unredeemed? In a way, that's a somewhat beautiful way to get from Jack as Jacob's replacement to Hurley. Jacob probably couldn't ever see himself as good as Hurley, but Jack was still broken and thus a perfectly fine replacement. But Jack's new mindset allows a new type of candidate: a fully redeemed one, someone who "takes care of people" like Hurley. A loving, and empathetic Island god. Fun stuff.

The MiB seems to bring out the darkness in people, tipping their internal scale toward evil, while Jacob guides people toward doing good/tipping their scale toward good. It’s very apt that the statue was of Taweret, shown recently in Moon Knight she is the Egyptian God who ferries the dead while their scale balances. The MiB wants to upend the scale of everybody into darkness, damming them as Isabella implies. Jacob either wants to tip the scale toward good or at least keep it balanced. The island provides tests (a drug plane for a drug addict), and people either end up giving in to evil and the MiB, or Jacob and fight the evil in themselves/potentially on the island.

First of all, I love these reactions and your channel! But it's so funny that you bring up slavery in the bible, because I've actually been doing a deep dive on that lately (doing word studies in the original Hebrew). I'm still in the process, so no final conclusions yet, but some of the things I've found so far have me wondering if it's even talking about slavery at all, even in the case of non-Israelites. The English translations can be misleading at times (like the fact that the word translated as "slave" is really just a word that comes from the root word "work" and can mean a number of things, it is most often translated as "servant," it's only in the last 50 years or so that translators have decided to translate it as "slave," and the words translated as buy and sell also have a variety of meanings that don't even necessarily include an exchange of money... really every word has a much broader range of meanings than we think, because ancient Hebrew was a word-poor language- only approximately 7,000 words as compared to nearly 200,000 in modern English). And in one passage, they translate two different Hebrew words as the same word ("owner") in English, making it seem like you could own one of these workers in the same way that you own an oxen. But when I looked up all the occurrences of each, one is used for animals, land, farming implements, but never once used for workers, and the one used for workers is never once used for those other things. It comes from the root word "adon" which indicates someone in a position of authority over you, like a government official, employer, king, or God. Which leaves me to wonder if the concept of ownership as we understand it even applied to these workers. It's also worth noting that in "slave bibles" they removed most of the old testament and about half of the new testament, leaving only the passages you mentioned about obeying your earthly masters, because they knew reading all the rest would lead the slaves to conclusions they didn't want them to reach. It's been a fascinating process of discovery, I can tell you!

I only wish we saw titus as MIB more. I feel like we didn't get enough of him

Eric needs to read the book of Philemon, Where Paul goes out of his way to try to talk a “bondservant holder” into receiving his bondservant back as a brother, no longer as a bond servant. This being after the bondservant ran away. Pretty straight up principles against slavery. Indentured servitude in the Old Testament was different from slavery in the modern conception, because it had to do with paying off a debt. It would either be voluntary or as a legal punishment. It’s no different from prisoners in prison today having to do work. I’m hopeful that Eric at least realizes that.

I always believed MIB killed Eko because he hates sin and Eko wasn't sorry for being sinful but Eko being of no use also works

I think, if a person died on the island, MIB then has access to the body, he can imitate them more fully, because he can access their mermories. In the case of Richards wife, he could only access what Richard remembered about his wife. So he can't fully flesh out that person so to speak, but, it's enough for him to use it for manipulation.

*point flies over Ricks head* Jesus Rick, the whole point of Jacob dipping Richard into the ocean is THAT THEY ARE ALIVE. He wants him to stop because he wants to live because HE IS LIVING. He wouldn't care about living or being tortured if he truly thought he was already in hell. Sensible!

The assumption that Jacob and the MIB are deities rather than just men who've lived a long time and can share that long life is quite odd.
