@5555Thecrow. Be nice. There’s no need to get so worked up, or call someone stupid. We all have different levels of knowledge, and exposure to culture. For what it’s worth, there’s not much in the Bible about Satan. He only appears in the Book of Job, and there, he’s subservient to God. His name literally means “the Accuser”, or more prosaically, “the Prosecutor”, like in a court. Otherwise, he’s only mentioned in passing, usually as “the Enemy”. Obviously his role changed in Judaic mythology over time, to become an adversary of God, as he seems to be serving God in the story of Job. The common conception people have now is from later oral myths and folktales.

A VERY important detail to remember Magnus Hanso who was the Captain of the Black Rock was great grandfather of Alvar Hanso, who became the founder of the Dharma Initiative. Tovard Hanso was the relative of Magnus that wrote the journal about the Black Rock that would years later be auctioned off to Charles Widmore in episode 4x05 "The Constant." Magnus was referenced before in the Episode 2x17 "Lockdown" on the blast door map that John Locke saw. Side note: The statue is called Taweret, Goddess of protection, birth, and fertility. In the scene where Widmore buts the ship's ledger at auction the auctioneer states that the Black Rock disappeared with all hands on its way to south America where it was delivering supplies and slaves to a mining interest belonging to Magnus Hanso. Will you be showing the ladies the Sri Lanka fideo along with the New Man In Charge after the series finale? There are other really interesting background videos that are very illuminating as well, like the Secret Mysteries episode about the Dharma 'cult' and a couple of the short webisodes (Missing Pieces).

yes they were the writers wanted the island to be purgatory -- that was going to be their big reveal -- the big plot twist but the audience figured it out before the first season was even over. so the writers scrambled to come up with something new -- that's why LOST's story kept changing and new characters kept getting introduced -- the writers were making it up as they went along trying to figure out an ending

But after watching the show I do wonder was that the original blueprint for the show that got later changed after people figured it out in first couple episodes? Judging by how the show ended it rly feels like thats how they wanted to end the show originally.

Regarding why Jacob let people die. We know from Charlie that time has intended points that always happen. Like even when he avoided death. death still happens. Jacob probably took a plane that was supposed to crash and replaced the survivors with his candidates. Knowing time would course correct to save them. From that point on it's down to the candidates to find their way for themselves. We can go further and think about how Jacob had to bring potential candidates from all the way into the future. To the point he drew people like what became the Dharma Initiative to build the facilities to time travel. So he could send candidates in the 2000's into the past to push other candidates into the right places in order to kill his brother. BUT they all had to do it of their own accord not because he made them. He just gave them a nudge. The sheer amount of permutations involved.

I like how the whole "stab him, kill him, don't even let him talk" thing was just MiB trying to trick people into killing Jacob quickly without a thought (most likely with a random knife he found). But since normal people have literally NO idea about how things work or what is going on they took it as something meaningful, magical and it slowly became a myth on the island. Like a spell that can be used to kill supernatural creatures/gods. Thats why natives tried to use it against MiB. But since its just a regular knife it didn't work on him. They had no idea that Jacob can be killed but not MiB (since he's a shape shifting smoke). I mean just think about it, Richard was a religious man. When he told that knife story to those island natives it surly sounded like something very important. At least that's how I see it. Thats my theory.

Not the official explanation but MIB/Flocke doesn't judge people, he just looks in their past and finds infos about them to see if he can use them as his "loophole" to kill Jacob, since he can't do it himself. It's easy to manipulate someone when it's weak or full of shame, guilt, pain and regret. That's what Richard was and in a way so it was Locke. That's why he spared them, he wanted to use them, probably that was the plan for Locke too until Ben killed it, which revealed itself to be a blessing as he could use his looks to instead manipulate Ben. Eko is a different case, he, like Richard, was a man of faith and using that almost worked with Richard. He saw Eko's past and let him live. Once Eko found out his brother was dead on the island, he tried to use his brother's shape to manipulate him, he wanted to hear his confession to discover what was his deep guilt, probably thinking it was causing his brother's death by being a criminal and use that, but then he found out Eko was not ashamed for his life at all, that "he didn't ask for the life he was given but it was given nontheless and with it he did the best he could". He realized he had nothing to use against him and just killed him, probably before he could reveal to others that there was an entity capable of looking like dead people on the Island.
@tal6605
@tal6605 4 жыл бұрын
great explanation. I just thought Eko wasn't a candidate so the Man in Black could kill him. So I guess after the incident with Richard, Jacob hid his own location from black smoke and only Richard knew how to find him. Richard did not know that Locke was murdered and he took him - mib - to see Jacob because he thought he was Locke - a candidate and also the leader. But what's strange is that mib told Locke he have to die after it already happened - in 2007 Locke is no longer Locke - and then the real Locke leaves the island after time-travel. It's like a circle - that's what always happened.

if you listen to what he says about the "others" in Across the Sea, he has contempt for them, and humans in general. And he's never changed. MIB is one of the few characters on LOST who has no redemption arc.

@je-nas
@je-nas 4 жыл бұрын
I find the whole conception of the MiB just plain ridiculous, there’s no way his actions make sense - who he kills, who he spares, when and why; also, the “rule” that he just can’t kill Jacob (or in general that the Guardian can just make up whatever “rule” he wants, including imortality - so why not just rule that MiB can’t harm anyone?) is obviously the most cheap and inorganic way to manufacture a conflict. And since Richard knows that MiB is the black smoke since day 1, it’s also nonsensical that Ben doesn’t know that too, and instead believes the Black Smoke to be some kind of judging entity (to which he goes to be judged for letting his daughter die). To say nothing of Jacob himself doing absolutely nothing to inform all his _victims_ brought to the island (and “victims” is the right word) about what the black smoke really is and wants: to _inform_ people of life-saving truths is not to “step in” nor to rob them of being good for themselves; the excuses given in the show are awfully weak upon scrutiny.
@FLRProject
@FLRProject 3 жыл бұрын
Actually, Locke dying was MiB’s plan all along, he is the one who told him that right before he spun the wheel, MiB also told him he needs to bring them all back to the island. The whole ritual with Locke’s body having an item belonging to Christian when coming back to the Island, I think that was the only way MiB could take his form. Since Locke was a Candidate, MiB was unable to kill or take their form, hence the whole thing. If you think about it, MiB really played a loooong game here, to make this loophole work.

Dana says- Not a railroad. The Blackrock sailing was during the great exploration era. Think mid 1400's to 1500's. The first train was invented in the 1800's. Many expeditions were funded for the purpose of gathering jewels, gold, spices, plants for dyes, and things to make silk or other fine textiles.

Statue of Tawaret: Goddess of Fertiltity, which typically has the body of a hippo, which has four toes. The ancient Egyptians that once resided on the island long ago, created this statue to appease the gods due to the fertility issues that they were having on the island at the time, much like The Others were having, which killed all the pregnant women. The electromagnetic energy on the island causes harmful effects to females who are pregnant, but only if you come very close to this energy. 'The Incident' in the season 5 finale of drilling into the pocket and setting off a mini nuke caused this issue to become widespread on the island. Juliet in effect caused the thing in the 70s that she was brought to the island to prevent. To quote from season 3 episode 7, which is Juliets very first centric episode: "We are the cause of our own suffering". To bring it back to the Egyptians, they also had their very own 'Incident', but instead of creating a button you press every 108 minutes(lack of technology), they created a stone cork, which Desmond pulls out in the series finale and Jack lifts it up and puts it back in to 'save the world'. To quote from season 2 episode 1, when Desmond and Jack first ever meet: "You have to lift it up" The Egyptians pregnant women all started dying after their own Incident and they created the statue of the goddess of fertility.

And got paid to do it. And he's clearly done it before and often. That's why religious organizations are so corrupt. Also remember when at the temple when they tried to use the water to heal Sayid but the water was impure because Jacob was dead. So instead MIB heal/currupted him. He did the same thing to Ricardus. I always wondered when his wife appeared to him on the boat was that the mib trying to persuade him. Never mind it had to be. No reason why he could see her then but not later when it really was her and Hurley translated for her

Yeah, it makes sense that Isabella on the ship was actually MiB...EXCEPT, when she is there talking to Richard we hear the smoke monster outside. I suppose it's not out of the question that one of MiB's supernatural abilities, along with taking the appearance of dead people and turning into black smoke, might be...ventriloquism?

The black rock was a mining ship that's why they needed the dynamite to blow rocks and stuff. This was confirmed I think in season 2 during the Hanso property auction

You wouldn’t use dynamite in a naval battle. It’s most likely on board to help dig for gold & silver.

“Ab Aeterno” means “from eternity”. While I do speak Latin, I would think most people who didn’t would still be clued in on the second word, since ‘eternity’ is clearly derived from aeterno. Sorry to be pedantic. But I was honestly surprised Suraj thought it meant “in the beginning”. At least he knew it was Latin. FYI. Whenever you see a word for a concept, which ends in “ty” in English, it usually means it’s derived directly from Latin. Eternity is “aeternitas”, security is “securitas”, liberty is “libertas”, et cetera.

Also, it's not hugely important, but the statue is Taweret, not Anubis. While she is an Egyptian goddess of maternal fertility, she is also an agricultural fertility goddess. In particular, among her titles was "Goddess of Pure Waters" which you've seen referenced (purity of water) both right before this episode and in the upcoming episodes. She was also the protector of mothers and children and was invoked in childbirth, a major plot point in early seasons.

I always expected that the Egyptian has found the island as it is roughly located on the other side of the planet. Earlier there was such storyline (like the polar bear), but it was ignored. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taweret The fertility statue completly fits into the story. Egyptian hieroglyphs, ankh sign etc. Juliet was working on the fertilty problems on the island too. So anyway it is a very cleverly planned mythological reference from the writers. On the other hand, since the whole Jacob-MIB main plot was taken over in season 5-6, the whole Dhama initiative and the hatches seem to be a complete time waste in the first 4 seasons.

I agree w the comment that the plane was always supposed to crash and those people were always supposed to die. Time corrects itself like it did w Charlie so Jacob just altered their path. Jacob putting them there and not interfering seems messed up but it’s literally how we see God’s role for us (in Christianity). He put us here but doesn’t want to control us so he’s letting us figure it out and hopes we’ll make the right choice. That’s why he let Ben kill him: it was his choice to do so, his freewill.

Yes. If God made all the choices for us, it would be artificial...like God playing with dolls. We would have no purpose or consciousness. We have to choose on our own as a test.

Dude, he let Ben stab him because he knew it was a sacrifice he had to make to move the timeline forward according to what the 'source' needed to happen. If he didn't want Ben to stab him, he could have prevented it. The source is the prime mover for everything that happens in this show. I think earlier on, Jacob brought people to the island to prove MIB wrong, but at some point he must have realized that it wasn't ever going to happen. MIB, although he had a tragic beginning, he definitely became evil. MIB needed to go, or he would destroy the island, and the light there would go out all over the world. So Jacob started bringing people identified by the source that would help stop the MIB.
