The thirteenth chapter in a series of LOST EXPLAINED videos that investigate the mythology and mysteries from the seminal television series LOST. These definitive explanations are based on multiple viewings of the show over the years and careful studying of the details, clues, inconsistencies and contradictions that make up the complex tapestry of what is the greatest television show from the 2000s.
Chapter Thirteen explores the nature of the the sickness and unravels the differences between several different sicknesses we see throughout the show. Other mysteries clarified include the timeline of Danielle Rousseau and why she killed her team; the smoke monster's "claiming" of people; what exactly the DHARMA vaccine was and if it really worked; and what was happening to Desmond's consciousness during his mind travel in 'The Constant'.

Sayid's turn to the dark side in season 6 is a self-fulfilling prophecy. Dogen assumes he is infected, so he treats him with suspicion, convinces him that he is evil and tries to kill him multiple times. Eventually Sayid snaps and kills him, and turns to the Man in Black, the only person who actually shows him any respect.

I thought that Richard's reaction to Locke re-appearing on the island and claiming leadership was a hint at "the infection". When Richard and Locke are talking privately, Richard has a puzzled look on his face and tells Locke that something seems different about him. Thought it was kind of telling that Richard has lived on the island for 100's of years and couldn't quite articulate, what specifically, seemed different about Locke. So I imagine Rousseax would really struggle to explain what she observed with her group but it seems as though she understood that her people had become "possessed" in some way.

A few videos ago, I was literally hoping that the whole "sickness" surrounding Rousseau's team would be explained here at some point. Then I see a video called "The Sickness". Absolutely terrific. By the way, I was thinking of further proof that Danielle's memory had become an unreliable source - that she had been alone for too long. When Sayid asked her if she had seen any other people on the island, she said no - that she had only heard whispers. But obviously she had, such as Jin and especially Ben, when he took her baby. And speaking of which, when she first caught Ben ("Henry" at the time) in her net and gave him to Sayid, her memory wasn't sound enough to remember that *he was the one who took her baby.* So yeah, there's ample proof that her traumatic experiences upon arriving, followed by 16 years of isolation, did a number on her mind.

Either that....or the writers and showrunners had no clue what their story was that they retconned any inconvenience along the way and figured people would explain everything that was wrong, odd or didn't make sense with any small thread that they could grasp lol...

Yes, they definitely retconned the Rousseau story in a big way between S1 and S5. It is hard to deny that fact. But I try and resolve any possible discrepancies using in-show information. It's a bit untidy but there are various explanations/interpretations available, depending on one views the sickness and its effects.

I don't even think her mental state had anything to do with it, she simply didn't recognize him, especially since she had no reason to believe he was a time traveler. In 1988, she met him for the span of a few hours before he vanished. After 16 trauma-filled years, she probably just forgot his name and face.

8:52 - 9:07 I hope that what you say is true. I was disappointed that the whole "pregnancy issue" on the Island was never resolved (at least, explicitly) in the show (especially because it played an important part in the plot). But the idea that Desmond resolved this problem by turning the fail-safe key sounds very good to me. If it is the case, I really wish that the creators had found a way to state it clearly in the story.
@LOSTEXPLAINED108
@LOSTEXPLAINED108 3 жыл бұрын
Well, it's a logical deduction really. If destabilizing this specific pocket of energy is what created the problem then surely destroying that pocket entirely would resolve the problem. What I like about this is that we don't realise that the energy beneath the Swan was the cause of the fertility issues until the end of S5 but, once that becomes clear, we can retroactively understand that the problem must have been unintentionally fixed several seasons prior.

I always thought that Rousseau's lover was like Sayid in season 6. I mean they all died by going under the cave and the smoke monster resurect them and manipulated them. Why would he kill Rousseau and his baby??
@LOSTEXPLAINED108
@LOSTEXPLAINED108 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, the implication is that Robert and/or Rousseau are "infected" like Sayid was. However, this infection is not a literal sickness because we see both Sayid and Claire overcome it. The Man in Black infects people by influencing, manipulating, lying and disorientating them. I don't think the Man in Black brought back Sayid from the dead. The Island did. If the Man in Black could resurrect the dead in this way then he could have done far more with that power, e.g. he could have built an army of loyal undead followers. Robert tried to kill Rousseau and his unborn child because he had been manipulated and driven to the brink of delirium, as had Rousseau. We don't know what transpired in the two months between their arrival and when Jin witnesses the shooting. All we know is that the monster could not kill them because they were candidates, so he manipulated them into killing each other somehow. Possibly by using Montand. It's open to speculation. Perhaps Robert thought Rousseau was an impostor too. She had literally just murdered the other team members seemingly in cold blood and was ready to shoot Robert. Anyway, I maintain that Sayid was brought back from death by The Island in order to save the other candidates on the submarine several days later. That was his destiny. Had Sayid died at the temple, all of our candidates would have perished on the submarine. The reason why he turns to darkness for a period in S6 is because the Man in Black promises him that he will be reunited with his lost love if he does as instructed. And this is a lie he uses to gain Sayid's loyalty with. The infection/sickness is the Man in Black's manipulations and deceptions, and how susceptible people are to believing him and committing evil acts on his behalf.

I just finished binging the entire series again after 10 years... So, didn’t Robert ask Rousseau the question “What lies beneath the shadow of the statue?” Which is a definite Jacob question. The temple splinter faction. But why would temple infused Robert want to kill his pregnant baby momma? Unless she was really already evil? But why not just avoid her for a week and wait for the baby to be born like youngish Ben did? This never added up right for me
@LOSTEXPLAINED108
@LOSTEXPLAINED108 3 жыл бұрын
Robert did not ask Rousseau "what lies in the shadow of the statue?" You are thinking of the scenes in the present day where Ilana asks both Frank and Richard that question separately. Robert had nothing to do with Jacob's people nor did he know to ask that question. The only connection that he has to Jacob is that he was a candidate, like Rousseau. Therefore, he was protected from being killed by the Man in Black. Which means MiB had to think of a way to get this group to kill one another. The question of why Robert would be driven to kill the mother of his unborn baby is open to speculation. We don't really know exactly what went on during those two months between first arrival and the shooting. All we can be sure of is that the Man in Black manipulated and influenced the group somehow. They became paranoid, delusional and violent. My video suggests several possibilities as to what could have happened. You ask why Robert didn't wait until Rousseau gave birth before confronting her. Well, that is the logic of a sane mind. Robert was definitely not thinking logically from what we observe in that episode. Neither was Rousseau for that matter. She had just executed the rest of the team, for reasons that are never conclusively proven to be true. She appeared to be more of a deadly threat than Robert. We don't know what was going through his head when he raised his rifle to shoot her. Maybe he thought: "It's going to be me or her." Maybe he thought: "She's not really Rousseau, she's an imposter." They were both semi-delirious by this point. Either way, it was a confrontation they had been manipulated into by the Man in Black.

While MIB definitely has very sharp powers of persuasion and can take advantage of his shapeshifting to run special cons, I think it's possible he also some supernatural sway. It wouldn't act like an infection, more like the way a magnet distorts crt televisions. I hadn't thought of the innoculations as being for radiation. Did we only see them in the Swan? It would have been interesting if they conceived of an innoculation against the smoke monster. They did invent the sonic fence and the Others had the ash.
@EternityinOurHearts316
@EternityinOurHearts316 2 жыл бұрын
I disagree. The sickness Danielle spoke of happens when MiB resurrected someone from having recently died. He "claims" them as his own when doing so and has extra influence over them. this is confirmed by Dogen in season six. It happened to Danielles team, to Claire and to Sayid. I believe Claire died and was resurrected by MiB after the barracks were attacked. Miles alluded to her not being able to recover from the attack and at night he kept staring at her. I believe she died from her injuries during the night and MiB immediately came to revive her and take her to the cabin.
@LOSTEXPLAINED108
@LOSTEXPLAINED108 2 жыл бұрын
I know this is a contentious topic but I don't subscribe to the sickness being supernatural in nature. If it was then why could Sayid and Claire overcome it simply by making better moral choices? Nothing they do feels like they are being influenced by evil, or that their actions are beyond their own control. They are making bad choices based on the Man in Black's lies and manipulations. Claire literally kills The Others because MiB claimed they had taken Aaron. He promises Sayid that he will bring back the woman he loves (could be Nadia or Shannon). I did a deep dive into this in my chapter on "Good vs. Evil" to elaborate on portrayals of good and evil in the show, using Sayid specifically as an example of what the writers were trying to communicate about these concepts. Someone doesn't need to be near death or resurrected from death for the Man in Black to "claim" them. We see him do this with Rousseau's team, none of them were near death. But more specifically we see him do it with Benjamin Linus in the S5 finale in which he convinces him to kill Jacob. All he does is talk to them and push the right buttons, poisoning their minds. It's why Dogen says: "If you allow him to speak, it is already too late." MiB knows just what to say to you because he understands human behaviour and weakness better than any other person on earth. He's had centuries of negative human memories to feed off. As for Claire having died during 'The Shape of Things to Come', there is no real evidence to support that. She definitely has a concussion, which makes her amenable for coercion when she sees her "father", but the idea that she died is a reach.

The shot being given on arrival appears to be an inoculation jab of some kind. The Island has high levels of electromagnetic radiation emanating from beneath, which DHARMA are determined to dig up and harness. It's possible that whatever serum is being used in 1974 forms the basis of what DHARMA develop later. What we see the hatch men using decades later could be a modified version of that original vaccine. There were most certainly variations of it developed over time, including Juliet's own variation on that same formula, which is the serum we see Ethan administering to Claire in 2004.

There is plenty of other examples along the episodes, and if you think about it, it is not a bigger "coincidence" than Hurley owning the box company Locke works for, or Jack being in the hospital Shannon's dad is brought to. Or maybe it was her being able to deal with her grief and try to move on so she could allow someone else to win back the love of their life? That idea is what kind of bugs me though about this series... libby was in the flash sideways with Hurley and sayid was in the flash sideways with shannon... they both had other loves that they married and truly cared about before they died so it seems weird that they would be with those people after like 2 to 4 months of knowing each other tops. Because Charlotte was born on the island and grew up during the DHARMA occupation in the 1970s, therefore she is the first of the group to perish.

You’re watching an old video, I haven’t gone back to the text to speech voice. Every video from “The Man Behind the Channel” onwards uses my actual vocals. And I have remade all the old content under the Theory of Everything videos. You don’t need to go back to these anymore 👍

@@LOSTEXPLAINED108 oh cool, good to know. I started watching your videos and your voice is what I’ve been hearing until the algorithm threw this video at me. I love your content and you made me want to do a list re watch. I’ve only seen it once so it will be nice going back in with all this insight. It’s a great show and I love season 5. I love time travel plots and closes time loops and stuff

Jacob told kate he crossed her name off because she became a mother maybe he crossed danielles off because she was pregnant
@LOSTEXPLAINED108
@LOSTEXPLAINED108 2 жыл бұрын
Jacob did say Kate becoming a mother was the reason her name got crossed off the list. However, it is not the real reason he crossed off her name because both Sun and Jin became parents to Ji Yeon in that same time and neither of their names were crossed off the wall. In fact, Sawyer was a dad too and his name also remained. Parenthood made no difference. The other interesting fact here is that crossing off a person's name from the wall does not invalidate them as a candidate because Jacob also says: "It's just a line of chalk on a wall. The job is yours if you want it, Kate." Which means she was still a candidate and still protected by his touch. So, what reason can we deduce as to why Jacob crossed off her name? Could it be to throw off the Man in Black from recognising Kate's importance? After all, she is the one to fire the killshot into MiB's back in the endgame. MiB had already dismissed her as unimportant by that point and never saw her coming. Rousseau stopped being a candidate after she was killed. Which, in my view, is the only way a person can stop being a candidate, or unless someone else takes the job.

There are so many moving parts to LOST that it is easy to forget lines and details. And even then we have to make a lot of deductions of our own to fit the pieces together.

First let me say I appreciate all the time you put into making these videos and sharing your thoughts. I initially watched Lost live with all its interruptions. I’m confused here. Are you inferring that methotrexate is the drug being given to Claire? Methotrexate is not a vaccine. It’s a drug that causes an extreme folic acid deficiency which kills all rapidly growing tissues. A lower dose would cause neurological birth defects in the fetus as it’s deprived of the folic acid necessary for brain development. Injected directly into the abdomen as we saw would probably kill the placenta and baby. I was treated with it so I am very familiar with its side effects. Hair loss, mouth & skin sores-it’s nasty stuff. But it’s not a vaccine and not what they were giving Claire.
@LOSTEXPLAINED108
@LOSTEXPLAINED108 Жыл бұрын
No, that is not what I am implying. I am saying that whatever Ethan was administering to Claire was a drug that was developed by DHARMA to counter electromagnetic sickness, then later re-engineered by Juliet and The Others for the purposes of solving the pregnancy crisis. It's not a real world drug. It's a fictional vaccine, which contains unknown properties. And it didn't work, at least not on early trimester pregnancies. All I'm saying is that the vaccine might share some overlap with real world drugs like Methotrexate. The point I was making is that the vaccine appears to perform a similar function.

how is it possible Danielle and Jin didn't recognize to each other in seasons 1-2?
@LOSTEXPLAINED108
@LOSTEXPLAINED108 2 жыл бұрын
Rousseau met Jin during a traumatic series of events that all happened in quick succession, including the murder of her team and the abduction of her baby. These events drove her to madness. 16 years on in 2004, she never officially meets Jin or shares any scenes with him onscreen. And by then she has long since muddied the past in her mind anyway, uncertain of what really happened. Meanwhile, Jin didn't recognise her in 2004 because he hadn't travelled back in time to meet Danielle's younger self yet. The experiences of time travelling characters are always linear, even though they are bouncing around through time. They experience events moment to moment just as we do.

The impression I got when I first saw the show was that the reason why women could not have delivered babies to term was because they were dead.
@LOSTEXPLAINED108
@LOSTEXPLAINED108 7 ай бұрын
If this is a reference to the theory that everyone on the island was dead from the start, that is not the case. I’ve made videos on this very subject. It’s a misconception that The Island itself was purgatory. Not only does the show make this clear in the finale but the showrunners have extensively debunked the idea in interviews. Pregnant women could conceive and give birth on the island up until 1977. Remember that Amy Goodspeed gives birth to Ethan. The reason why pregnancy becomes a problem after 1977 is because of the fallout from the incident, which affected pregnant women from conception. We see that both Claire and Rousseau give birth to their babies without issue because they conceived off island.

@@LOSTEXPLAINED108 The way the aircraft broke up in flight, no one would have survived.
@LOSTEXPLAINED108
@LOSTEXPLAINED108 7 ай бұрын
The plane didn’t crash normally. It was being guided in by an electromagnetic force. It’s a sci-if show not a documentary. There are lots of impossible things that happen in LOST, but it has nothing to do with them all being dead. That theory completely undermines everything that happens in the show and also makes the purpose of the sideways pointless. It has been widely debunked by the creators as well yet people cling onto it for reasons I can’t fully understand. Watch my Theory of Everything series as I get into the details of everything and explain clearly what was going on. It’s a complex mythology full of moving parts and ideas that takes a bit of time and effort to explore and understand.

Why didn’t Rousseau remember meeting Jin? Is it just because she’s crazy?

Rousseau met Jin during a traumatic series of events that all happened in quick succession -- the death of friends, seeing the smoke monster, Jin appearing and disappearing before her eyes, the psychological breakdown of her lover, killing her other teammates, the abduction of her baby, etc. 16 years on, she never officially meets Jin or shares any scenes with him. And by then she has long since muddied the past in her mind. As much as she was a great character, Danielle was indeed a little crazy.

Jin is SE Asian and Rousseau didn't want to seem racist by assuming that ALL Asians look alike to her. Rousseau being an international type gal...was more sensitized to this issue.
