Welcome to the LOST EXPLAINED FAQ. This video series addresses Frequently Asked Questions about LOST and drills down into the specifics of the show. The aim is to answer smaller, more complex questions that deserve their own explorations and deep dives.
In this FAQ, we explore the causes of the pregnancy crisis on the island and the roles of characters like Juliet Burke, Benjamin Linus, Claire Littleton and Danielle Rousseau. Other questions connected to this mystery that shall also be explored and answered include: the Statue of Taweret and its significance to the Egyptians; the narrative reasons behind the inclusion of Ben's childhood friend Annie; how and why Claire could give birth without any issues; and whether or not the pregnancy problem was ever actually solved.

It boggles my mind how much detail, attention, and thought they put into this show. So many things you don’t even realize they thought of until someone points it out.

It sucks so much because a lot of people hate the ending / show and the way it’s told. People are often not open to different storytelling or have patience to follow a story unless it’s straight forward and everything is explained.

I don’t know about that. I used to post to the Fuselage and we tore apart every episode. Obviously we couldn’t debate details not yet revealed but I can’t think of something that wasn’t discussed. I remember one person who saw details that were not there but they insisted they were. How I miss those days on the Fuselage and the ABC board too. Spent hours online starting as soon as Lost ended.

Wow. I honestly don’t know what to say. Although I basically knew all of this information, the way you put it together artistically and how beautiful you worded this video really touched me and made me tear up. What an amazing piece devoted to Juliet, the savior of the island. Many say Locke has the most tragic story on the show, but I’ve always felt Juliet does - she’s trapped in a time loop and, as you mentioned, she is the embodiment of “we are the causes of our own suffering.” This channel is amazing and your work is absolutely excellent. Love, love, love this video!

The lack of a continuation of Annie's story always hurt! Writers seemed like they were sad about it too.

Yes, and it’s also a gap in Ben’s story. I could see why they were sad about it. I’ve always felt like they slightly underestimated the number of episodes needed when they set an end date. One of the “missing” episodes being a Ben episode from being taken to the temple until the kidnapping of Alex, with Annie being featured heavily.

When he brought up the 2008 Writers' Strike over residuals for internet sales (downloads and streaming) I only just remembered that _Lost_ suffered with a reduced Season 4 and possible losses in characters' backstories as well as the present action of that season. I don't know why I didn't make the connection with the current writers' strike, since I was watching _Lost_ from Season 2 onward. It was also my feeling that Annie might have been the first pregnant woman to die on the island, and carrying Ben's child. (It's a nasty lie for Ben to say he was born on the island to justify his importance when Ethan might have been the last to be.) I'd rather believe that "you look just like her" refers to Annie rather than his mother, who'd only be known through photographs, not seen by Ben's followers. I felt that in the flash-sideways Hugo should have told Ben to seek out Annie, to find her and see if she still loves him. It does seem plausible that an EM pulse every 108 minutes is responsible for the loss of pregnant women and their babies, since EM energy is how the "magic" of the island works in real terms. But if it affects the pregnancies of polar bears, as stated, then what about the fact that pigs can still bear offspring, as Sawyer captured a piglet once? Also if any pregnant woman (or her partner) gets "in-tune" with the island, then wouldn't it tell her in some way that her and her unborn baby's life is in danger, and that she has to leave? Finally, I don't think there's "fallout" from such energy in the same way we have from an atomic explosion's radioactive elements or from elements released in a nuclear plant's meltdown. If there were, than the sky turning purple when the failsafe key was turned would have lasting "fallout" affects, too. My idea was that after getting pregnant his teen girlfriend, Annie, (who returned to the island), Ben asks her to have an abortion. Then when she refused he asked the island to stop the pregnancy, which it not only does (killing Annie) but kills every other woman that gets pregnant. So he's more than feeling guilty over his mom dying in his childbirth, or even his girlfriend dying during her pregnancy, but by directly causing the problem. Finally, like the rules changing either with the passing of Jacob or turning the island's light off and on, it should be fixed with Hurley's ascendancy.

I once wrote a case for Juliet and I’d love to share it here in the comments, especially due to this amazing video. I hope you take the time to read and enjoy it! ❤️ First of all, I understand that some people believe she was untrustworthy. I understand and to an extent I blame the writers for that. We only see that she goes to Jack in the middle of the night to inform him of what Ben’s forcing her to do in a mobisode. However, in “The Man Behind the Curtain,” it’s made clear that she’s joined the survivors. Not only has she already revealed the plan to Jack (who doesn’t want Juliet to say anything about the plan to Kate because he “doesn’t know what he’s going to do about it yet”), she tells Sawyer to turn over the tape recorder which reveals Ben’s plan. She has turned on the Others who kept her trapped for 3 years. Her “flip” is mostly offscreen, but even the season 3 finale makes it quite clear that Juliet has betrayed the Others. Charlie tells Bonnie and Greta this in the Looking a glass station and Ben tells Mikhail this via walkie talkie. Juliet’s goal is the same as the survivors - to leave the island. In season 4, she helps the survivors confront the freighter crew. When she has the chance to leave on the zodiac raft, she makes sure that Sun, her baby, and Jin get on the first raft. She also tells Daniel that she promised she wouldn’t leave until she was able to get all of the survivors on the freighter. Whatever harm she caused the survivors in the past, I believe she more than makes up for it by continuing to help them. Now this is the part of this post you’re probably scanning to see what my thoughts are: Juliet revealing Sun’s affair to Jin. Let’s remember that this action ultimately leads to Sun and her baby being rescued. Yes, her reveal was inappropriate to some. Did she deserve the Sun slap? Sure. Was it worth it? Yes. Sun was still keeping this secret from Jin and even after the reveal, Sun runs to Jin and tells him “it was a long time ago,” which is odd since there was a possibility the baby wasn’t Jin’s. I understand that the secret is Sun’s to tell, but even her actions in the “Ji Yeon” episode are a bit off. Sun continued to stay with Jack and gets spooked about the freighter people to the point that she thinks going to Locke’s camp is a good idea, despite everything Juliet has helped her with. Also, I think Kate stirred up a bit of drama for no reason (her jealously of Juliet is hinted at many times and vice versa). If you knew someone was making a decision that would most certainly kill them, would you reveal a secret to their spouse to ensure that doesn’t happen? Juliet is doing her best to help Sun and her baby survive. When she believes them to be dead, she is destroyed and drowning her sorrows with some DHARMA rum that is half empty. She is devastated at the potential loss of Sun and all the survivors she’s tried to help. As for her time with the Others, we can gather she isn’t happy, obviously. While mobisodes show that Juliet isn’t happy with Ben’s handling of Walt and Michael, we also see her asking Ben about the kids from the tail section in “The Other Woman.” She tells Ben that the kids keep asking about their mother, but Ben simply says “Who are we to question who’s on the list?” Juliet has no control over this. She’s having to basically watch this craziness from the sidelines and hopefully try to get others on her side (like Amelia). I’m sure it would be quite difficult to stage an insurrection against Ben, as we’ve seen. In another mobisode, we see Juliet confiding in Amelia by showing her Ben’s x-rays. When Jack is being held captive, she sneaks in a videotape hoping to convince him to kill Ben so that she may finally be set free. With Ben out of the way, perhaps she can finally leave the island. She does mention that people on the island want change and not everyone is happy with Ben’s actions. When Jack pulls his stunt to help Kate and Sawyer leave, Juliet has to show the Others that she’s capable of handling a situation while Ben is under anesthesia. If and when Ben wakes up, the Others can then vouch for her which will hopefully put Juliet in Ben’s good graces enough to let her leave the island. She does tell the Others to kill Sawyer and Kate if they must. She HAS to call Jack’s bluff in front of everyone or else she will be executed (thankfully she is only branded instead). While Juliet’s actions are harsh, we should remember that other characters have done much worse. That isn’t an excuse, just a possible explanation for her actions. We also know she’s read everyone’s files and understands how savvy Sawyer and Kate can be. Perhaps she just made an empty threat. It also seems she was not involved in recruiting castaways for the temple and knows very little about it. While Ben’s threat regarding Jacob curing her sister’s cancer seems to hit her hard, she remains in the barracks with others in the book club. The castaways kidnapped mostly go to the temple until Ben realizes he needs Jack to operate on him. What’s the best way to manipulate Jack? Force Juliet into helping him who “has quite the resemblance to Jack’s ex-wife.” Some may think Juliet is a manipulator, but almost every single one of Juliet’s “manipulations” were Ben’s ideas that she was practically forced into doing. I only ask people to consider this when thinking Juliet’s motivations were unclear or if you believe she was a master manipulator because that is simply false. Speaking of Ben, Juliet knows how cruel he was to her - she lived with years of abuse from him. Yet, even still, she saves his life as a child in 1977. She knows he’ll grow up to be her captor, but she saves his life. James tells Kate, “She said that no matter what he grows up to be, she’s not willing to let a kid die.” Knowing he’ll hurt her one day, she still chooses to save him. Juliet was mistreated by her husband, then Ben, and later found hope with Jack who ultimately loved someone else. While all of this changes with James, her insecurities begin to come out with the arrival of the Oceanic 6. Juliet “called it the minute those whackos got here.” She had the insight that her DHARMA life was about to be ruined and at the same time began to develop her insecurities regarding losing James. In other words, Kate and Jack coming back was a trigger for Juliet and her past. Her past with the survivors. Her past with Jack. Her past of failed love. People often complain that Juliet was wishy-washy in The Incident. When things come to a head on the sub when Kate enters the submarine, Juliet notices how James begins to speak: “I made a decision and I’m sticking to it. I decided to leave and now I’m leaving.” Juliet heeds Kate’s warning and doesn’t want the people on the island to die. Juliet is also having to choose between being stuck in the 1970s on the mainland with James AND Kate OR going back to save people despite knowing it will almost ruin any chance that she has to go home. After seeing James call Kate freckles, their back-and-forth banter on the raft, and finally, James’ look at Kate during the Rose and Bernard encounter, she changes her mind. Just as Kate later agrees to go along with Jack’s plan, Juliet does too. Her trauma of her past comes roaring back and she believes perhaps James and her were never supposed to be together, just like her parents. She thinks maybe life could be best apart, never knowing. More importantly, she wants to make it that James never “comes to this damn island.” She knows the plan will prevent Oceanic 815 from crashing, but what will happen to her? She knows the jughead plan will directly correlate to the plane never crashing, but what happens to her? There’s a strong possibility she ends up exactly where she was in the early 2000s, stuck under Ben’s rule on the island. I believe her act of hitting jughead is such an incredible selfless sacrifice. I understand the chains caused her death, but as she’s struggling to hang on, she realizes the metal is breaking and doesn’t want James and Kate to go down with her. She knows and understands what she has to do. “It’s okay.” She sacrifices herself for them again and again. Juliet, while ultimately yearning to leave the island, continues to be a very selfless character. She saves Sun and her baby, she saves Jack’s life by removing his appendix, she saves a young Ben in the past despite the future repercussions, she saves the castaways from the Others, she lets go of James’ hand to protect him and Kate, and she hits jughead to help save everyone from the pain of the island, knowing her fate may still be the same - stuck in Ben’s grasp. Jack saved the world in 2007. Desmond saved the world in 2004. Before that, Juliet saved the world in 1977. The mother of the island. The bloody martyr. The altruistic healer. A true hero.

Exaclty ! And that's why it annoys me when people say the female characters are almost useless. Juliet saved the world in 1977 like you said. Kate killed MIB and so she also saved the world. Eloïse made sure it all happen, and it costs her her son... About Juliet changing her mind, I totally agree with your analysis. Sawyer also changes his mind in the end. People always complain more about female characters, I noticed.

I like the idea of Annie dying during childbirth. I keep forgetting about the writers strike. Its sad to think there's a version of the story we never got to see. I always wonder what Mr. Ekos story would look like if he had stayed around. Although I think it's a badass ending to the character that he essentially was one of the few who just told the MIB to screw off.

Agreed! Mr. Eko's storyline being cut short is one of the most unfortunate unforeseen developments in the series. However, as a result of his being written off the show, we got Desmond's story instead. And it's really hard to imagine what the show would have been without his character, his relationship with Penny, his bond with Jack and Charlie, or his time travel shenanigans. So, even though Eko's loss is a big minus, Desmond's inheritance of Eko's story beats with the flashes became a big plus. And considering 'The Cost of Living' and Eko's demise were unplanned detours, I think they pulled it off incredibly well. I actually think the final ten minutes of that episode from Eko's slaughtering of the warlords in the church to his final confession and death on the island are some of the best scenes in the show. Which is truly amazing since none of it was what the writers originally wanted or intended. Even more impressive was the way in which the writers integrated in huge revelations about the smoke monster, island apparitions, and the ominous/malevolent nature of Smokey's intentions into that final sequence. They literally revealed there that the smoke monster can transform into dead people *and* that some of (if not all of) the other apparitions might very well have been smoke-related too. It was a jaw dropper. And Eko's fate at the hands of MiB, whilst premature, appears to follow what the writers might have ultimately planned for him to some extent. It was just truncated into one episode.

I don't think it was about Annie dying during childbirth like Ben's mother, but during pregnancy, like the other women on the island. I think Ben would feel more to blame for causing that than his mother's death, who he only knew from a vision.

I was wondering about Annie a lot. Thanks for giving a plausible explaination. I didn’t expect this video to be this dark and depressing. I knew that the death of pregnant women on the island were caused by the electromagnetic energy but everything else I kind of ignored or didn’t realise/know. Juliet is even more tragic than I thought. Ben’s got more tragedy in this story. I like the idea of your Annie explaination. And I love that the hatch explosion fixed the problem (Desmond turning the key is one of my favorite moments and now another reason was added). Jesus, watching this 20 minute video is like a rollercoaster ride of emotions. Just like LOST. Thank you for your fantastic work.

I always speculated that Annie was murdered in the purge, or that her parents made them leave due to the growing conflict between Dharma and the others. People did have the option to leave back then, as Charlotte and her family leaves. -Either case would've given Linus all the more reason to hate Widmore for either killing or driving out his only friend and possible first love. I don't think she died during pregnancy with his kid, as that could've easily been added in in a throw-away line by Linus by saying that he had "lost 2 children now" after Alex's murder. I think it's more likely that the missing scenes with Annie was a possible "Serverous Snape" situation, where Widmore promised Linus to spare Annie from the purge but lied just to prove his status, and thus making Linus use Annie's death as an argument to prove to the rest that he Widmore wasn't to be trusted and should be voted out. Afterall, Widmore lost power shortly after the purge. Besides, nothing eludes to Linus having previously had any kind of steady and serious relations with a woman. Seeing as he had been the leader for many years, one would assume that someone would've been keen to become the "leader's mistress," yet everything points to the opposite, indicating that gaining that power wasn't worth it as it meant being with him, with his erratic personality.

Great video! It flows so well with your own voice. Completely share your idea on Annie and I know several in the Lost community who feels the same, so you're not alone on that ;) It really fits thematically with season 3, Ben's ways of distancing Alex and Karl and so on. I can understand how it was an idea for Ben in future storylines, but other stuff came along. Ben's flashforwards were awesome and fit better season 4's theme, while his rivalry with Widmore fit perfectly for season 5. I can also add that Damon Lindelof hinting that the Incident being the cause since some viewers were confused: "“We feel like we’ve given you the empirical data so you can figure it out for yourself.” Hmm… a little more help please for the clueless? “Clearly Ethan was born on the island in 1977,” continues Lindelof. “That’s the last baby that we know of who was born on the island. And then something happened between 1977 and when our show takes place in 2004 (when Claire arrived eight months pregnant) where it’s been a long time since women have been able to have babies on the island. What might have happened between those two points that could have created fertility issues?” (March 19th 2010 interview with TV Guide)

I will say that there are a few things I’d like further explained, as I’m not sure I agree. For instance, you mention that Desmond turning the key “fixed” everything. So, my thoughts were that the computer had to be built to release the radiation every 108 minutes (due to Juliet hitting the bomb). Every 108 minutes allowed only a small amount to enter the “atmosphere bubble” (loved that you called it that!) so a catastrophic event wouldn’t occur. From 1977-2004, this happened every 108 minutes. When Desmond turned the key, I assumed that since a small amount of radiation was released over so many years, the leftover amount released when he turned the key was still powerful, but only caused the hatch to implode and wasn’t that large of an amount. Also, as a die-hard Juliet lover who will always defend her outing the afraid to Jin in order to save their lives, it stings a bit knowing that might have been for nothing. I mean - either way, Sun was the lie and still keeping the truth from Jin. We do see Sun having a very difficult brith and when she’s talking to Jin’s grave, she even mentions it then as well. I always thought it was potentially due to the fact that she got pregnant on the island and perhaps there were extra hardships when giving birth. Ben wouldn’t let Juliet take any women off the island, even after Juliet mentions that she thinks it happens at conception. Claire and Rousseau both seemingly had few problems giving birth on the island after conceiving off island, but that doesn’t necessarily make it true for the opposite, with Sun conceiving on island and giving birth off island. That’s another reason why I believe the pregnancy problem is still in play. Also, I almost see the pregnancy issues as a way of causing the island not to be overpopulated due to the exploitation of it (Ben mentions the famous Virgin Mary image people “saw” from Florida). Also, do you think it’s possible that Ben retained or had vague memories of Juliet helping him when he was dying as a child? We’ve seen Juliet, as she was dying, basically become one with the Source essentially. Is it possibly he had this near-death experience which allowed him to have vague memories of a doctor who saved him years ago? After all, he went back to Dharma after being saved by the Others. I’m sure people were talking, there may have been pictures laying around. Hell, as far as we know, Juliet saw a young Ben during 1974-1977 and was kind to him, hoping it may have an influence on him later. Who knows! I like the Annie connection and that she abruptly left on the sub in 1977 while Ben was with the Others. Ben probably came back to the barracks and was most likely only one of few kids left around, adding to his loneliness. Otherwise, I’m not sure I buy into the “you look just like her” in terms of Annie. I think it’s more plausible regarding Ben’s possible retained memory OR that Juliet looked like his mother. But there may be more there if we think about it… There were 3 full years of Juliet and a young Ben that we never saw. Were Sawyer and Juliet having game nights with Horace and Amy? Did Jin teach a Korean class on the side, with Charlotte being one of his students? Was Juliet an acquaintance of Roger and Ben or did she play an active role in anything else? There are so many possibilities. “Hey Juliet, we need someone to assist in the decorations for the school play this year, mind signing up?” That’s all it takes for her to be around a young Ben. So much to speculate on! Ben’s mistreatment of Juliet is despicable. I understand how you arrived to the conclusions and how Ben’s infatuation with her could’ve happened. I like how you bring it back to how Roger always reminded him of how he killed his mother. That does explain his craziness toward taking all the pregnant women at the camp at all costs. (I would never give him a pass though, as he did some horrible acts). I would love to know your thoughts! ❤️

We have to think about it in terms of internal story logic. There are pockets of concentrated energy connected to The Source all over the island (and the world). I see these as "arteries" of the island and The Source as the literal heart. So, if The Source is the heart then the energy pockets beneath The Swan site and The Orchid station are like the kidneys. It's probably best to use this analogy to explain the rest. Your kidneys essentially remove waste and extra fluid from the body and help to maintain a healthy internal balance. One kidney can be removed and the body can still survive. So, The Swan pocket of energy could be wiped out entirely and the island would still survive because it has other pockets (aka organs), although it will be weakened. When DHARMA digs up the ground and causes a leak at The Swan site, it's best to see this as one of the kidneys rupturing. Without treatment, it can lead to the death of the organism. Juliet and Jughead provide a temporary patch to this rupture. Over time (and many man hours), DHARMA manage to reinforce this patch and contain the leak from the kidney, which is spilling out "waste" into the body (aka the island). This leak continues in bursts of every 108 minutes for the next 30 years, discharging its toxins into the larger body. So, if the ruptured kidney is causing this problem, logic follows that it needs to be removed entirely. And once it has been removed, the problems it had been causing are now resolved. It is that specific pocket of destabilized energy that was leaking and being discharged into the atmosphere that created the pregnancy issues. Therefore, now that pocket has been completely eradicated, the leak of "toxins" is no longer an issue. The other energy pockets remain contained and intact. I hope this helps to clarify my reasoning. As for the Annie stuff, it's all theory on my part. Nothing was ever confirmed. However, Harper's comment about "you look just like her" came only 8 or so episodes after the Annie character had been first established in the prior season. I honestly believe that her comment was originally intended to be a reference to Annie, but the writers strike and a truncated season order forced the showrunners to change direction. It feels right to me, even though I can't prove that was the intention. Annie definitely had a bigger role to play at one point, which the writers did go on record saying back in Season Three interviews. I agree that it's absolutely possible Ben retained some memory or echo of Juliet (at least subconsciously) from his childhood years. He might not have been able to put his finger on it but Juliet was familiar to him for sure. I like that added dimension to their dynamic in any case. I also agree that Ben's actions throughout the series are not easy to forgive or forget. I think the writers left him in the right place by The End: shrouded in ambiguity and uncertainty. Which is the same context in which we first met him as Henry Gale. I love all of your suggestions of what happened over those three years of Sawyer, Juliet, Jin & co living amongst DHARMA. Particularly the idea that Jin taught some of the kids Korean and that's how Charlotte picked up interest in learning the language. She was probably too young to start learning it properly, but the seed was planted. Love it!

Interesting idea that Ben, as a child, might have had a crush on Juliet. But I think Richard said he would change and not remember certain things. Sounds like a timey-wimey _Doctor Who_ explanation for avoiding paradoxes after he meets his past selves: they won't remember. I seem to recall fans asking early on whether anything was possible on the island, like time travel, and them saying, "No." But maybe it gave them the idea. Too bad they hadn't planned out most of the story before or after getting the series green-lit (like _Babylon 5_ did, and with trapdoors and substitutes if the actors had to leave) so they could come up with a consistent causality. I too like the idea that Annie stayed or came back and they were teenage boyfriend and girlfriend, and that he could have gotten her pregnant, feared the consequences, asked her to have an abortion, when she refused wished for her to miscarry, then the island made it so all _human_ pregnancies terminate with the mother. I think this would make him feel more responsible and wanting a cure than guilt for his mother dying during a premature childbirth. Finally in the flash-sideways she would be the one to help Ben "move on" as they once loved each other.

I just found your channel, its great! I loved Lost when it originally aired, over lockdown I rewatched the whole series and got obsessed with it. I came to the same conclusion after researching the statue and finding it was the Ancient Egyptian god of fertility. Concluding the Ancient Egyption's were a presence on the island in a big way, and it was a sacred place to them we see hieroglyphics and the ankh symbol a-lot as well and alongside the statue there are the other ruins. Perhaps with the Roman period of Egypt the island was forgotten and passed into myth, perhaps the Egyptians wanted to keep it secret from the Romans. Jacobs and his brothers real mother was a Roman, perhaps that was why the guardian at the time didn't have any qualms about killing her and the other shipwreck survivors later, or maybe its just because she was a smoke monster? Although If you use Guam where the supply drop drone was flown from as a bit of a reference to where the island could be - its a flippin long way from Egypt and a difficult navigation. The Ancient Egyptians did have ships and a navy that sailed to Syria and India - but any further than that is unlikely, but the island may have been in a different place and what does it matter, its fiction anything can happen!
@LOSTEXPLAINED108
@LOSTEXPLAINED108 Ай бұрын
I’m glad you enjoyed it! I made a video all about the ancient past of the island, which explores the Egyptian period in depth. I also explored how the island moves and where it was likely situated for a long time (in the Mediterranean Sea) before moving out to the South Pacific. I don’t think the island moved back to the Med after its first jump away (too exposed there). In any case, the DHARMA warehouse near Guam wouldn’t need to send supply drops out to that location. Apparently the drops would be made twice a year, which means they would only need a window every six months to launch the drones, and maybe only when the island was within a certain proximity. Anyway, you’re right. It’s all fiction so it can get away with some of these elements. P.s. here’s the link to the video on the ancient timeline of the island: LOST Explained - The Theory of Everything: Part Two (Mother, Jacob, Man in Black & The Egyptians) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l6hkntmD3bSbeJc.html

Great video! You theory on the original plan for Annie has been my thought exactly all these years. I have two questions or even possible ideas for future videos, I hope this is the right way to get them to you: 1. Was there a second incident? You already mentioned that the Jughead explosion gave Dharma enough time for finish the Swan, which was still in a very early construction phase during the 1977 incident. The Orientation video for the Swan mentiones that "not long after the experiments began howerer, there was an incident"; meaning that another type of Incident must happend after the Swan was completed, leading to the destruction of the generator seen in Via Domus and the neccessity for the concrete wall. 2. Are you considering a video on the Blast Door Map? My specific question would be, whether the central question mark was referring to the Source? A first time viewer is led to believe the queston mark is supposed to be the Pearl, which is of course not actually the case. The Pearl already has its own entry on the Blast Door Map, Eko is referring to the salted shape on the ground as a "circle" and Radzinsky is clearly aware of the existence of the Pearl. The question then becomes: What central mystery was Radzinsky trying to find?
@LOSTEXPLAINED108
@LOSTEXPLAINED108 2 жыл бұрын
The blast door map is definitely something I would like to address in its own video but I'm not sure when I will get to that on the list. Maybe I could address that once I start the episode guide and get to the 'Lockdown' episode. Lots of details to cover on there! I will address it in some form eventually. As for the "second incident", I subscribe to that idea to a certain degree, but I wouldn't necessarily call it that. Pierre Chang is most likely referring to the original incident in the orientation video. We can interpret the "not long after the experiments began" part as meaning: not long after they started building the site and probing the energy. The fact that the writers called the Season Five finale 'The Incident' officially designates the events of that episode as being what Chang is referring to in the orientation. When DHARMA built the station, they installed a reactor capable of absorbing the electromagnetic build-up so it could be discharged safely. This reactor is what is sealed behind the concrete wall in the hatch corridor., as you have pointed out For whatever reason, the reactor room was abandoned some time between 1980 and 2001, perhaps due to an almost-incident in which the button wasn't pushed in time. We can only speculate as to why they walled off that room, but it was most likely to avoid another meltdown. I don't think it was a full incident like we see in the Season Five finale, but more akin to what we see happen with Desmond in the Season Two finale flashbacks. A system failure that made the reactor room "too hot" to enter.
@AlexGeh
@AlexGeh 2 жыл бұрын
@@LOSTEXPLAINED108 Thanks for the answer! I can see that the term "second incident" is misleading. So basically the question boils down to: what exactly happened to the reactor? There must have been a time after the construction was complete when the wall was still open and the generator was used as intended (= harness and study the electromagnetism ? ). My interpretation is that the button protocol wasn't conceived in 1977 but only after the reactor failure possibly years later. The simplest explanation is probably that Dharma underestimated the force of the electromagnetism (with their original designs being based on pre-incident data) and so the generator they built ultimately wasn't able to withstand that power.

I discuss Ben's obsession with Juliet around the 14:40 mark. Ben might've had a subconscious familiarity with Juliet, but he wouldn't have connected the dots. How often did Young Ben ever interact with Juliet in 1974-77? I think Team Sawyer would have actively avoided the boy. It is later made clear that Ben was unaware of the time travel when he sees the old DHARMA photo from 1977. His obsession with Juliet was more complicated than a memory. She represented many things to him. See the aforementioned timecode for more elaboration. Also, you should definitely rewatch the show in the new year 🙂

I explored this a bit in a previous video on the smoke monster. When it scans people, the monster produces a blinding series of flashes. We see this most prominently when Smokey scans Juliet in the jungle and Richard on the Black Rock. When Locke looked into "the eye" of the smoke, he was blinded by these flashes, and mistook them for something inherently "pure". And conflated the smoke monster as somehow being a positive embodiment of the island itself.

They roughly translate to “Underworld”, which was likely Radzinsky’s own little in-joke about the known Egyptian history on the island (DHARMA was aware of all the ruins) and the fact that whoever was unlucky enough to finally see that hieroglyphic sequence come up would mean that it was game over for humanity and that “the underworld” was going to consume us all. The hieroglyphs tend to have more than one possible translation, as is the nature of the language, and another interpretation of that string of symbols is even more direct and unsubtle. The other translation simply says: “Die”. 😯

Interesting take! I'd argue that most of The Others were unaware of the time travel. Many of them appear to have been recruited after the events of 1977, so wouldn't have the context of those preceding years. It is made clear that people like Ben did not know about the time travelling (there is a scene where he looks genuinely baffled to see that DHARMA photo). Only certain characters like Richard, Charles and Eloise were "in the know". How much of that knowledge trickled down to the rest of The Others is open to speculation. Any photos of Juliet from 1977 (if they indeed exist) would essentially look identical to how she looks in 2001. There are roughly only 3-6 years age difference (three years on the island in the present timeline and another three in DHARMA times). So, it doesn't make sense that Harper would say "You look just like her". If Harper knew about the time travelling and that Juliet was going to travel back someday then Juliet wouldn't look "just like her". She would actually be "her". Why would she even bring that up? The line doesn't really make sense in that context. The reason why Juliet is treated like a "celebrity" is because she is there to solve the pregnancy crisis that has been plaguing The Others for decades. They see her as their saviour. The person who is going to cure all of their suffering.

I understand this theory to some extent because it has that cool circular time loop logic to it. However, I'd argue that most of The Others were unaware of the time travel. Many of them from the 2000s appear to have been recruited long after the events of 1977, so wouldn't have the context of those preceding years. It is also made clear that people like Ben did not know about the time travelling (there is a scene where he looks genuinely baffled to see that DHARMA photo and Richard explains how healing him in the temple would affect his memories). Only certain characters like Richard, Charles and Eloise were "in the know" and would remember our Losties being in the past. How much of that knowledge trickled down to the rest of The Others is open to speculation. Harper, as the resident shrink, certainly wouldn't have any of that time travel context. The main issue I have with this interpretation is that any photos of Juliet from 1977 (if they indeed exist) would essentially look identical to how she looks during her recruitment in 2001. There are roughly only 3-6 years age difference for her there (3 years on the island in the present timeline and another 3 years in DHARMA times). So, it doesn't make sense that Harper would say "You look just like her". If Harper knew about the time travelling and that Juliet was going to travel back someday then Juliet wouldn't look "just like her". She would actually be "her". And why would she even bring that up? The line doesn't really make sense in this context. To me, considering Harper is a shrink, it makes way more sense that Juliet looks just like Ben's mother Emily Linus (of whom we know Ben has a photo of in his home) and Harper means it in a more Freudian sense. And it's true that Juliet and Emily do look very similar.

@LOSTEXPLAINED108 Жыл бұрын
That's an interesting take although I'm not sure if I agree. Essentially you're saying that The Island *can't* heal Ben because it already healed him in the past? But judging from other instances on the show, The Island appears to have no limitations on how many times it heals people -- Locke being a prime example. Just because Ben was healed once before in the temple spring wouldn't preclude him being healed again. Plus, him having cancer played into a larger series of events involving Jack and Locke. To me, it feels very intentional that The Island did not heal his cancer, yet healed every other cancer.

Why did the energy pocket where the Swan was only affect pregnant women? If the island could remove the healing effects from people like Ben, why couldn’t it turn off its healing effects for pregnant women? How were there animals on the island like wild boar, frogs, and birds? This channel is great btw :)
@LOSTEXPLAINED108
@LOSTEXPLAINED108 Жыл бұрын
The energy has healing properties and can reverse injuries and illnesses when channelled through water or kept in place underground. But in close proximity it can be fatal to early term gestation because the energy influences the immune system to fight off everything. And the immune system treats a growing fetus like a foreign invader or cancer and it unmakes the baby. Pregnant women were fine as long as this energy stayed in its place. But The Incident unleashed the energy into the atmosphere of the bubble and created "fallout". We don't know if there were other side effects from this fallout. There is a reason why DHARMA quarantined parts of the island and introduced the hazmat suits. It's reasonable to assume that there was radiation leakage that caused other problems too. We just never really see any of that. But we know DHARMA took the fallout seriously and put in place safety measures. One could argue that much like radioactive fallout from atomic detonations, it caused certain defects. Maybe this is where Eloise Hawking got her gift of foresight from. Maybe this is how a Young Miles first developed his ability to hear the dead. It's possible the fallout would have dissipated over the years and the pregnancy problem would have organically resolved itself. However, The Swan spent another 20+ years discharging and releasing the energy build-up every 108 minutes, making it impossible to stop the pregnant women's deaths. As for your question about why The Island didn't "turn off" its harmful effects for these women... that's because it couldn't. The only reason Juliet is brought to the island in 2001 is to solve the pregnancy crisis. And the only reason the pregnancy crisis existed was because Juliet detonated Jughead in 1977. No pregnancy crisis, no Juliet. No Juliet, no Jughead detonation. No detonation, no more island. No more island... Game over. The Island doesn't get to just do whatever it wants to help or hinder the people living there. It must fulfil the timeline. As for the animals on the island, we can assume a lot of them arrived there with people. As far back as seafaring began, ships would have carried livestock. And we know there were countless shipwrecks on the island over the centuries. These animals bred and multiplied. And as more advanced civilisations made The Island their home, the more elaborate their animal imports would have become, like horses and polar bears. And other animals might have gotten there in the same way that they get to small islands in real life. As Jeff Goldblum says in 'Jurassic Park': "Life finds a way." ;-)

@@LOSTEXPLAINED108 Sorry, you (or the _Lost_ writers) are off-track or inconsistent here. If polar bears' pregnancies are affected (polar bears can live 25-30 years, so the two could be from Dharma), then pigs' should be too. Sawyer found a piglet, and that wouldn't have arrived on the island the same time as their plane's crash. Thus suggesting pigs can still bear offspring. I don't buy the "fallout" theory either. We have fallout from nuclear explosions in the form of radioactive elements in the environment. While the idea of an EM pulse every 108 minutes sounds like a good way to perpetuate the magic pregnancy-killing, there's no "fallout" after an electric line goes down. So I'm still convinced that it was either "the will of the island," or Jacob's will, perhaps because Ben as a teenager wished for his pregnant teen girlfriend to miscarry or have an abortion, and the "wish" got perpetuated to every woman, but not pigs. And it wasn't turned off until Jack or Hugo became Protector.

And Karl doesn’t look like he’s in his 30s. I think he’s supposed to be late teens. He might have been brought to the island as a younger teen by a parent.

I understand this theory to some extent because it has that cool circular time loop logic to it. However, I'd argue that most of The Others were unaware of the time travel. Many of them appear to have been recruited after the events of 1977, so wouldn't have the context of those preceding years. And why would she even bring that up? The line doesn't really make sense in that context.

I think karma is definitely a force in LOST (The Island pretty much represents fate itself and is constantly rebalancing the scales) but the pregnancy problems would have started after the incident in 1977, which would have also impacted DHARMA and not just The Others. So, DHARMA would have been plagued by the same issues for another ten years before being wiped out. The pregnancy problems were not a result of The Others and the purge, but a result of DHARMA and the incident.

Yes, that would have been the humane thing to do, but people weren't allowed to leave the island without express permission from the leadership. It was an overarching rule put in place by Jacob centuries earlier to make sure that people committed to life there. However, this rule was enforced by Ben rather haphazardly and usually at his own discretion. Basically, Ben didn't want pregnant women leaving to give birth because it would signal to his people that they might be better living off the island all together, and it would demonstrate a failure of his ability to lead them and rectify any problems that his people were facing.
@sandal_thong8631
@sandal_thong8631 11 ай бұрын
@@LOSTEXPLAINED108 I'd agree with most of that. But in another video, you examine a tapestry where it seems that some of Jacob's followers, possibly Egyptian, were leaving on sailing ships, and this was to protect them from being exterminated by the Smoke Monster. This seems somewhat uncharacteristic of Jacob, as he doesn't seem to care much for his followers, but to expect them to choose good over evil on their own, nor for his candidates who had to figure out for themselves that they were brought there to replace him, until down to 4. I'm not sure how Juliet, if she was indeed candidate Burke-58, was to have done that, unless she somehow communed with the island?
@LOSTEXPLAINED108
@LOSTEXPLAINED108 11 ай бұрын
@@sandal_thong8631 Jacob's empathy and connection to humanity had to start somewhere. And we know he had a very close alignment with Egyptian cultural artefacts (living in the statue, making tapestries about their history, using an ankh as his personal crest, etc). So we know that he had significant interactions with them, and we know that only he could find the heart of the island, which means the only way the Egyptians could have found the cave to build the cork was with Jacob's guidance. Anyway, I think through all of this, Jacob formed a bond with some of these people and eventually sent them away. And after that he vowed not to get involved again. He pulled back because he did not want to get close to future people. I disagree with your assessment that Jacob doesn't care about the people he brings there. He cares about them very much, he just doesn't want to tell them how to live or how to be good people. He wants them to figure that out for themselves. They have to. That's the point. It should have been clear to Ben that these pregnant women needed to be moved off island until the problem was solved, but Ben didn't want people to view leaving the island for long periods as an option. I think he was enforcing this rule with an iron hand both to appease Jacob -- to show him that he is a loyal acolyte -- and also to show that he, as leader, could fix any of the problems that came up. I think keeping pregnant women on the island and risking their lives was ultimately down to Ben's interpretation of Jacob's rules. As for Juliet, she figured out how to live a good life with Sawyer once they were in DHARMA. She got three years of that life in which she wasn't ruthlessly carrying out Ben's orders. She chose the light rather than the dark. Most people never know that they are candidates until the moment comes. Jacob doesn't know for a long time who will ultimately replace him, just that it will become clear to him (and the candidate in question) when the time is right. Just as it did for him.

@@LOSTEXPLAINED108 Thanks. But after being socially stunted as a boy and young man, and being alone for years, we don't see him being close to anyone, other than touching them and talking to Hugo and Richard. I can now imagine him orchestrating human constructions (although that's what his brother did), then doesn't want to get close to people his brother could kill.

@@sandal_thong8631 Yes, I agree with this very much. The less emotional connections Jacob had to the people that came to The Island, the less the chances were that MiB could exploit those connections. It's also right that you point out that Jacob was socially stunted and isolated. He didn't have the normal socialisation that allows a person to develop basic people skills. I always viewed him as being a bit of a man-child in those early centuries and that formed the basis of his interactions (or lack of) going forward.

I feel like you’re overcomplicating something that the show made simple. We see children being born before 1977 without any issue. The characters even draw our attention to this fact by stating it in dialogue. After the incident takes place, the pregnancy problem begins. That’s not a coincidence. Jughead was part of that chain of events, so you are right that the bomb played a role, but the idea that a buried Jughead took thirty years to have any effect on pregnant women makes no sense to me. Radiation leakage causes problems very quickly, especially with pregnancies. More crucially, Jughead is destroyed during the incident after Juliet detonated it. So, your theory suggests that for thirty years Jughead didn’t affect pregnant women, but only started to create issues for them *after* it ceased to exist? And that the pregnancy crisis just coincidentally begins after the incident takes place and is unrelated to the incident? I just can’t understand that way of viewing it at all.
