#LeaveNoQuestionUnanswered #LOSTexplained
The sixth chapter in a series of LOST EXPLAINED videos that investigate the mythology and mysteries from the seminal television series LOST. These definitive explanations are based on multiple viewings of the show over the years and careful studying of the details, clues, inconsistencies and contradictions that make up the complex tapestry of what is the greatest television show from the 2000s.
Chapter Six explores Walt and his various powers. This video explains why Walt was so important and what his ultimate purpose was to be. Other mysteries explored and explained include the psychic abilities that characters demonstrated throughout the series, talking to the dead, astral projection, how Jacob left the island without the need for transport, and why The Others took Walt in the first place.
ABC owns all copyright. The footage and music used in this video are for educational purposes only and fall under fair use.

I always had this idea in my head that the Island wanted Walt to get there so he could grow an attachment to it and then wanted him to leave to so he could wait out the events that were about to come and then later return safely to complete his purpose. Thus the Others were ordered to kidnap him and let him leave.

I certainly think there is an argument to be made about Jacob having some sense of this. In the 'Lost: Missing Pieces' mobisode 'Room 23' we even get confirmation from Ben that Jacob ordered Walt's abduction. Now, if Ben is to believed (and that's a BIG if) it would help to reinforce this theory. Jacob was intentionally creating a chain of events. Although part of me still believes Ben was behind this one. either way, it all plays into what The Island needs to happen.

Another awesome video. And yet again, you connect what seems to be very obvious two plot points or moments that I never really thought about, which is Walt being super scared when warning Locke about opening the Hatch, and what would later happen with Michael. This is another example where I always find myself in a sort of inner conflict with LOST. Sometimes I wish the series made things a bit more clearer when it comes to Walt. But at the same time what they showed fits perfectly with the mystery nature of the show and how the narrative of the story itself is told.

@@MatiZ815 Honestly, I think Michael and Walt would and should have been there regardless of Michael's past actions but the problem the writers faced was that Wal would look too old and they didn't want less observant audience members asking: "Wait, who's that guy?" This would have been doable had they actually brought Walt back to the island for season six and resolved his arc with Michael, which is my biggest regret about the last season. As a result, the only was to explain their absence in the church is that they only needed each other to move on with (and Vincent!).

Yes, agreed. They could have brought back Walt for the final season and had him interact with his father. Their reconciliation would have been so emotionally rewarding. We could have had a whole Walt-centric episode including a flashback of how he came to the island with Widmore and a definitive explanation regarding his powers. Would have felt right having him in the finale, staying on with Hurley and Ben. I’m glad we got the epilogue but it would have been better to have a small Walt arc in season six itself.

Not sure if I could completely agree with an "astral" projection. I felt that it was more of a physical movement through space/time, like Ben did with the "donkey wheel". He ended up in a different place entirely. I think Jacob did this on many occassion as well. The lighthouse was like a map, but the mechanism to get there involved the source and the wheels helped control the direction of the time space movement.

why would Hurley be asking Walt to replace him just a few years after he himself became the islands protector? Especially when the final episode gives the impression that Hurley lived a very long time before dying.
@LOSTEXPLAINED108
@LOSTEXPLAINED108 2 жыл бұрын
Well, first of all, Hurley implies that Walt will take over from him someday in the Epilogue. He literally says: "I want to talk to you about a job." There is only one job on the island that gets spoken about over and over and referred to as such in season six. Secondly, remember Ben's words to Hurley in 'The End': "That's how Jacob ran things. Maybe there's another way. A better way." In other words: Hurley is *not* Jacob, and everything we know about Hurley tells us he would have no interest in ruling for centuries. He wouldn't want to see his family and friends die around him whilst living forever. The point of making Hurley the protector at the end was to show that a new era was about to be heralded in on the island. One in which things were going to be done drastically different from Jacob, including the rules and tenure of protector. How long Hurley ruled for is open to debate, but there is no way he ruled for centuries. It doesn't fit the character or the reason why he was chosen to take over. The Epilogue suggests that he is recruiting Walt in order to surpass him someday when the boy is older and more in control of his abilities. It wouldn't be an immediate handover of power. I explore this in my video that theorises what happened after 'The End', which you can watch here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ptxnrdJyqNCminU.html

I think when Shannon and John saw Michael, I now think that was the MiB. Walt spoke backwards to Shannon to not push the button, the button was bad. We all know if they didn’t push the button it would kill all the candidates and destroy the island. The second time she saw Walt he tricked her to run into the group with Anna and they were on edge after Cindy was taken. That led to her death and the elimination of another candidate. When John saw Walt to get him out of the gravel, that led to John killing Naomi who was also candidate brought to the island 🏝️.

I'm currently re-watching the series so I may be a bit fuzzy on some details but I do have 1 question about your explanation. I use "astral projection" in a loose sense of the term because he is travelling across large distances presumably at the speed of light and manifesting at will, much like the Man in Black does. Perhaps teleportation would have been a better way of phrasing it. Jacob is always corporeal when he is visiting people off-island. That is made very clear by his tactility with chairs, books, candy bars, etc. He is really there. He is not a phantom or incorporeal in any way. But his method of appearing in different places around the world without the apparent need for transport is the result of this teleportation/projection process.

So clearly, Isaac the healer saw a vision of Rose's future and realized he would not be "allowed" to help her. It might have just been the plane crash, which is why he looked horrified, or it could have been a flash of all the danger and tragedy she would be witness to, but he knew he had to step back and let her take her place in the causal web to play her part in the process. Same reason Richard Malkin made sure Claire got on the plane with the made up BS about the family in L.A. An actual psychic, despite what he said in a later episode with his daughter's return from the dead, he saw some of Claire's future and did what the Island was compelling him to do. Another great video.

I figured out why Walt says: "Don't push the button. The button is bad" while astral projecting. Walt has such a strong communion with The Island and in tune with the time loop that has to occur, that when he is in that state where he is unconsciously projecting himself, he knows that certain things need to happen. For e.g. he knows that one day the button needs to not be pushed and that the failsafe needs to be turned for everything to be set along a certain path, which is why he says don't push the button.

It's always surprised me that such creative writers on such a fantastic show could not think of a supernatural way to age walk up in the time they were on the island he could have went into some spooky cave or suckes into some electromagnetic atorm and got spit out years older. Jacob could have aged him up for any number of reasons and it wouldn't have been any dummer than what they did

I didn't mind them writing Walt out of the show for a few seasons. For me, the perfect time to reintroduce the character was in Season Six because three years had passed and the show's time was closer to Malcolm David Kelly's real age. They could have had Widmore bring back both Desmond AND Walt on the submarine, and a teenage Walt could have interacted directly with his father Michael to help the man move on, as well as reunite with Vincent. They could have made a Walt-centric episode with flashbacks showing how his life had been and how Widmore recruited him (filling in some missing pieces about Walt's powers as he learns to use them). Then towards the end of the season Walt could have joined with Hurley and Ben at the end to become part of the new island paradigm. It was a perfect opportunity to bring him back and close out his storyline. There was definitely room for him in the final season.

I love your channel but I think you are missing a piece to Walt's story. The island, Jacob, Richard, The leader of the Others, and the Other's themselves serve one goal ... protecting the time loop, correct? Walt's powers are chaotic and what he manifests goes against the time loop. So as to not endanger the time loop, Jacob, has the other's kidnap Walt. Yet he cannot be brainwashed and the stress of the kidnapping is multiplying his abilities. Jacob allows Michael and Walt to leave the island, as to not endanger the time loop any further. Once the time loop is over in 2007, Walt is welcomed back to the island by Hurley, because again there is no longer a time loop to protect and he is older and less chaotic with his powers.
@LOSTEXPLAINED108
@LOSTEXPLAINED108 2 жыл бұрын
Interesting analysis! I don't think Richard and the Others were serving one goal to protect the time loop. Their only goal was to protect The Island. While Richard was aware of time travellers he wasn't actively preparing for the loop, as we see in 'Follow the Leader'. It was the Man in Black guiding Richard at the beechcraft. The only people actively working towards the time loop are Jacob, Charles Widmore and Eloise Hawking. Jacob on a macro level, and Widmore and Hawking on a micro level. I don't think the reason for taking Walt was about removing him from the equation of time. Ben says: "We got more than we bargained for when we took Walt." Which is to say his powers caused them all kinds of problems. As evidenced in mobisode 'Room 23'. If we are to believe Ben in that Jacob ordered Walt's abduction then my reading of Jacob's motives would be this: Jacob only ever gives orders for his people to do something when it is related to specific causal effects, i.e. building the runway so that Ajira may land three years in the future. Jacob needs to usher events along from time to time. We see him do this with Hurley in the cab and later with the lighthouse. Whether or not he knew Walt would become a future candidate/island protector is unknown. But what he did know was that by taking Walt it would set off a series of causal events that change the course of destinies for both the survivors and The Others. Walt's abduction leads to so many ripple effects. It's the only reason the raft crew ever come across the tail section, for example (which leads to Eko saving the world when John Locke won't, etc). So, I think it was more related to creating a cause so there would be an ongoing effect. That's just my interpretation of this though.

Walt burned the raft before that conversation with John Locke. Walt burns the raft because he wants to stay. Locke works out that it was him and confronts the boy. Later, Michael is poisoned accidentally with the water bottle mix-up. Walt goes to Locke to tell him that he didn't poison his dad. Locke says that he never thought it was him. They share a moment. Locke touches Walt's arm in a gesture of comfort and that's when Walt has a psychic reaction. He sees/senses something and pulls away, yelling at Locke not to open "that thing". That night, Michael offers Walt the option to stay and let someone else lead the raft mission. But Walt has changed his mind since his moment with Locke and now insists that they *have* to go.

I am remaking them soon. I've started using my own voice already for new videos (the latest six on my channel are all narrated with my actual voice), which you can start with here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aLJ5ar1_p8rbfIE.html

Walt-it doesn’t make sense that Walt will take over the island. If Hurley stayed for half as long as mother he would be on the island for 1000 years and ready to die. But Walt would also be 1000 years old. He’d be ready to retire before he started. Doesn’t make sense. I think Walt’s purpose was explained. He is to help all of the whisperers pass on not just his father. That’s why he can see the dead to save those stuck on the island.

Thanks, but not really what I meant by "What's up with Walt"? "LOST" is so convoluted I may never get the answers I seek. Or maybe I think tge answers they gave in the end sucked and didn't live up to the set up of previous season.

Whatever questions you have about Walt are sure to be similar to the ones others before you have already asked. You basically want to know why he was special and where his powers come from. This video explains why he was special (an explanation bolstered by the events of 'The New Man in Charge') and where his powers came from (thanks to 'Across the Sea' explaining where *all* the powers come from). The writers have gone on record multiple times as to why Walt was written out. His character never got to be explored fully, which is a shame, but this whole "Walt was never explained" criticism is a bit of a fallacy.

Those scenes are from the series epilogue called ‘The New Man in Charge’, which was included on the Season Six DVD boxset. It’s a great little coda to the show that many fans have missed. About 12 minutes long. Answers some lingering questions. And provides a bit of closure to Walt’s story. You can watch it on KZfaq 🙂
