See, here's my theory. It was very Emotionally satisfying, for those of us for whom this was an emotional experience. Too many people watched LOST as an Intellectual experience, trying to uncover all the answers. And the finale wasn't logical. Island magic is the best answer we get. So people who wanted a real, clear answer were upset. LOST to me has always been about the characters and their relationships, not on the mystery. And the ending is very satisfying if that is your focus.

At the bar a while back the bartender and I had been talking about our mutual love of Lost when she decided to put the show on. A lot of the bar joked about it and talked shit about it, but before the first part of the pilot was over, we'd turned off the jukebox and put the sound on. The people that had shit on it without really watching it much or at all were suddenly invested and asking me all sorts of questions. When I finally went home I think they were on episode 6.

Cause people can’t always control whether or not other people will correctly read the words that they wrote 😅 Also, I’m pretty sure what they’re basically saying is that: even if you watched the show years ago back when it first aired (in 2004-2010) and you never saw it again since then, you’d _still_ have a good memory of it years later-I just assume they’re probably speaking from personal experience-cause it had _that_ great of an impression on your psyche 👍

@Darius Bostic I don't care about Jesus. I do care about pushing your beliefs on others. Nice try to disassemble my logic, but like most religious people, you don't understand basic logical thought patterns. You're the one posting unwanted proselytizing on a fucking youtube video that has nothing to do with religion. You really don't understand how absurd that makes you seem? I don't hate Jesus. The world is not made up of Jesus lovers and Jesus haters, as much as your black and white religion would love you to believe. The problem is, it's just not real. There has never been a concrete reason to believe in any religion. I think some of his teachings were pretty rad and how humans *should* treat each other. Modern Christianity is a bastardization of those teachings. I can lead a moral life without an outdated handbook, thanks.

I may be 2 years late, but I wanna say that this video is what finally pushed me to watch this show. My mom was pregnant with me while it was airing, and she used to tell me about how my dad would watch it while she went to bed early cause I had her up all night as a baby. She would mention the show a lot, how it was innovative and worked with flashbacks and forward flashes, always making me interested in it, but I never actually tried to watch it until I watched this video. I’ve now successfully completed the show, and I can truly consider it one of my favorite shows of all time. Thank you, Danny, for opening me up to Lost again.

"Lost is a show that needs to be binged" I agree it works well binged, but my favorite part of watching Lost as it came out was the theorycrafting, the podcasts that analyzed every frame of the episode to find all the little clues and Easter eggs and (more often than not) red herrings that the show provided. Granted the months-long hiatuses were killer, but the community that loved Lost really flourished because of the weekly nature of the show, not in spite of it.
@KS-xk2so

I was in my late teen & early twenties when Lost came out. It was the last show I religiously HAD to watch as it came out on Thursday nights, since you needed to have seen it to be able to theorize and chat about it the next day in the office. I loved theorizing about the show..... that being said, looking back, I think the crazy theorizing and mystery hunting actually hurt the show at the time. When they didn't provide every single answer by the end of the series, people were pissed off and shit on they Finale. They were so focused on that they missed out on the beautifully interwoven story about this group of characters.
@laurarules3642
@laurarules3642 4 ай бұрын
@@KS-xk2so To be fair the shows creators did encourage the mystery hunting and theories because it supplied them with unlimited free publicity . Even a lot of the official merchandise about the show encouraged viewers to solve the puzzles of the island. I agree with you though it was one of the last television shows I was hooked on religiously . I got given the first season on some pirated DISCS by an online friend. The show hadn't even been released in the UK yet so I was in the handful of chosen ones who got to see it before everyone else. Then it was difficult to get the episodes as they dropped in the US so I used something called LIMEWIRE I think it was that was used to pirate CDS to get the episodes and I would go straight to IDB forums to argue with others about the episode . Then a cable network got the rights to LOST and I actually bought the package off them to get the last couple of seasons. Like EVERYONE else here and everyone online at the time I was absolutely disgusted with the ending and furious. Of course back then you had the LOST APOLOGISTS as they were known who tried feebly and pathetically to defend the show but ultimately failed and they still have the lost apologists today. Anyway I bought the boxset and have re-watched it every now and again and I am now at peace with the ending and accept it.
@effortlessfury
@effortlessfury 4 ай бұрын
Yeah, the counter to the idea that "it's a show that needs to be binged to be appreciated because who is going to keep it all together over a long period of time," is the idea of pouring over the shown in-between episodes. There were ways to stay engaged with it when you weren't watching it and for those interested in doing so, it was a unique experience that's hard to replicate.

LOST is the reason I properly learned English. Back then, VOD wasn't really a thing and the dubbed version that was on German TV was.. not horrible, but I didn't find the voices fitting. Also it was behind a whole season and I had to avoid spoilers like crazy. So I did what everyone did back then and put on my Pirate hat and sailed along. I had to re-watch every episode at least two times (I didn't want to read subtitles, I hate subtitles, they're annoying and reading is for nerds anyway). I’m so happy when you were describing the soundtrack being emotional you put John Locke’s backstory. His backstory (and later this entire series) is the ONLY ever moment I’ve cried at a non-animated tv show. And i have to credit most of that to the soundtrack. Its so fucking heartbreaking to see a 40 something man sobbing about his dad while the most heartbreaking and emotional song you’ve ever heard is playing.

My parents watched Lost while it was airing and I was a little kid. I remember so vividly being scared shitless by the soundtrack because I could hear it from my bedroom while they watched. I never even saw the show but I was scared to watch it for so long. I went and watched the whole thing partly because of this video, and I knew I’d come back and watch it after I finished. Well, I just watched the finale about 5 minutes ago and here I am. Thank you Drew for focusing on the soundtrack and composer so much here, those songs truly scarred me as a child (in the best way possible). I’m still in shock at how underrated this show is, especially the ending. I’ve heard so many people saying over the years that the ending was terrible, so I had mentally prepared myself for that. I ended up being surprised by how amazing this whole show was. It was truly ahead of its time and a total game changer for the genre. I need a few days to process this lol

I think that Charlie from LOST may genuinely be one of my favorite characters of all time. The first time I watched the show with my dad, I said to him “I like the way that he’s just so calm while everyone else is freaking out about the giant plane crash.” (little did I know he was on coke). While I know that he could be VERY weird and even more creepy at times, I always had a special place for him in my heart. I was heartbroken when he died and I still think that he’s a one of the best characters I’ve ever come across.

If you haven't watched The Leftovers (also Damon Lindelof who did Lost), you'd probably love it. I feel like he learned the lessons he needed to from Lost, and that's why it's probably the tightest 3-season TV arc of all time. Incredible show.

Leftovers benefited from being a cable show that's why it's tight. I'd argue the characters from Lost are infinitely more intriguing than the cast of the Leftovers though.
@melrupinski88
@melrupinski88 26 күн бұрын
@@Romans8-9Agreed. The Leftovers had a known number of episodes to get to the ending, so everything could be strictly planned out with no filler. Lost, had to deal with 22 episode seasons, no set ending timeframe (network wanted at least 10 seasons, producers wanted 3), a writers strike, main characters wanting to leave, etc. While I also agree that the Lost characters were more interesting, I’d have to give a slight nod to the cast of The Leftovers in terms of acting, especially Justin Theroux and Carrie Coon.

Well 99% of reviewers are STUPID lol. But seriously everything about Lost's score is perfect. The slow rhythmic sound of low string instruments that builds suspense. Then the almost swarming orchestra when our characters are fleeing from danger. The percussion using actual pieces of the plane wreckage. The use of oldies music throughout the series. And who could forget that sad, melancholic tune that plays during the more emotional scenes. We all know the one.

Yes! Part of why Riot's and Netflix's Arcane worked so well was because of the soundtrack, they put a lot of care in it. You can see the process on KZfaq, a documentary on one of Riot's channels. This is a kind of serendipitous day. I saw this video in my feed around a year ago and clicked on it like the loyal Guy I am. I was fully ready to watch this whole video and have Lost spoiled, but as I sat through the intro I remembered the mysterious air the show had to me growing up; a strange show about plane crash survivors, and the way my dad excitedly babbled about it. I closed out of the video, and decided to watch the show, and come back when I was done. Little did I know that I was embarking on a year long journey. I began the show with my dad, and it kept us connected as I went off to my first year of college. I enjoyed watching it with the friends I made there. After long breaks between watching, I quickly remembered how invested I was in these characters. I saw the struggles of the characters in the show, and it made me feel less alone. Today, I finished the series. I sobbed as I watched what were once flawed and damaged people grow and complete their stories. As the series came to a close I felt that uncommon but welcomed ache when you say goodbye to a series and characters that resonate with you. I sent a text to my dad, and he made me aware that the day I chose to finish the show is the air date of the series finale 13 years to the day. It then only felt right that I finish the show on such a strange and almost predestined note. And now, after watching a full series recap (because this show is so fucking confusing) I am sitting in the dark at 1:42 in the morning getting ready to watch a video that I have traveled a long, sometimes arduous, but totally worthwhile path to see. All this to say, if you somehow read this, thanks Drew for being the Jacob to my flight 815. Maybe that was a bad analogy, but thank you for introducing me to one of my favorite shows ever. Such a fabulous, messy and heartfelt ride this has been. And if you’re a random internet traveler that decided to read my silly little story, I’m glad our paths intersected for even a short time. Just know that love keeps us all connected, and best of luck to you on finding your constant. See you in another life, brother.

The origin of Jack's tattoos were a major source of conspiracy and theories back in the day, even though they were just Matthew Fox's actual tattoos that they didn't wanna bother covering up. I see the episode as a "fuck you, shut up" to those theorists.

This is also around the time that the producers and network were negotiating on how many seasons to extend the show. The network wanted at least 10 seasons since it was a hit, the producers originally wanted to do the whole show in 3 seasons. So, to be fair, there was a lot of filler early in Season 3 when they didn’t know how many episodes to plan for, which is why the losties spent so much time in the animal cages. Once they negotiated it down to 6 total seasons, things started to tighten up. Of course, until the writers strike in Season 4.

I binged Lost on Netflix back in high school in 2010. It was my mom's favorite show and I wanted to see what the hype was all about. Glad I did. I still think about the show, its ups and downs, the emotional moments, what could have been had it been planned out from the beginning, had there been no writers strike, had the show had more time to explore the avenues they wanted to.

Fun fact: the writers actually had no idea which characters were going to get screen time and many actors were left not knowing wether they would have prominent roles. The set was such a mess that the writers got Steve and Scott’s characters confused accidentally killing off the wrong one- hence why it was a running joke in the series I know this cause the actor who played Steve was my ex boyfriend’s dad and he talked extensively about this

As someone who‘s spend a lot of time studying forms of serial narration in media, I can attest that in academic writing on that topic, there is no hotter shit than Lost. For like a solid decade, narratologists were obsessed with that show. Lost is pretty much where serial narration went from being just „quality“ (shows like The Sopranos or The Wire) to being „complex“ (aka constructed on different levels and dispersing information across all of them) which has kind of become the hallmark of almost all shows that we all rave about nowadays, as well as most transmedial francises. Even though active fandoms obviously existed before, the Lost fandom more than any other before it proved that people were willing to collect and remember all the dispersed information a show gave them over loooong spans of time. You could argue that that‘s when producers realized that mastering the complex lore of something wasn’t just a thing that nerds did because they‘re weird, but actually a fantastic way to engage an active and invested large audience. In many ways, the success of Lost could be seen as the birth of the age of complex narrative (which i personally would argue we are now nearing the end of, with francise-fatique and the growing popularity of simpler stand-alones).

Leitmotif is the word drew is looking for when talking about the melodies being reused in different context and different accompaniment to create different feelings. That recurring melody is the leitmotif and I personally absolutely love when they are used well. I think they're fairly common but I only really care about the music of things I already like so I wouldn't be surprised if it's actually uncommon but I just consume a lot of things with leitmotifs

Lost became my new obsession after Friends finished. I joined in season 3 and stuck with it. Yes, it seemed to lose its way sometimes but I actually quite liked the ending. What you didn't mention though is that it had two endings - the one that happens in the real world and the other one that happened in the "flash sideways" world. It's that flat sideways world that people always consider as the "it was all a dream" ending.

We would watch like 4 episodes a week during summer break and like 4 episodes a month during the school year. After my mom went to bed, my dad would come up to my bedroom and tell me to get the popcorn started with a grin on his face. It was always fun hanging out with him. But my dad passed away in December due to covid, it was crushing loss and very unexpected. I've tried to watch Lost since but I can't bring myself to do it because it reminds me of him. Lost got me in into sci-fi and for that, I'm grateful for. Before, I had been watching romantic comedies, which were fun, but none challenged my mind the way Lost did at the time. I can tell you I spent way too much time on the Lost Forums after every episode, and don't get me started on the writers strike at the time. Wednesday nights were an event at my household. I liked the time travel, but I didn't care for the mythos as an answer, but I loved the flash sideways being their purgatory at the end (AFTER their real island experience). Their lives on the island were the most important moments they'd ever experienced, so it makes sense that they would see each other again after they pass away (some longer, some much, much longer (Hurley and Ben). It definitely was drawn out when streaming services would, well, streamline it, but for its time, it was a brilliant show. And let's give a definite shout out to that perfect musical score! Forgive me if I don't make much sense, I've had a few drinks, lol. I thank this show for sending me down the rabbit hole of sci fi. Black Mirror, Dark on Netflix, Westworld, Ex Machina all started for me with Lost... All so different, but all share thought provoking philosophy. LOST set the bar for me in the beginning

Locke referencing Adam and Eve, taking a leap of faith, being a believer, the two brothers symbolizing Cain and Abel, the smoke monster being referred to as the devil and finally that there is life after death and those characters in the show who constantly tried to do good ultimately ending up in heaven with characters like Michael and Ben being left behind. absolutely amazing show

As an ancient and decrepit former Lost stan, it's interesting when you say the show needs to be binged to be appreciated. I started watching Lost during the writers' strike of 07 online. ABC had all the episodes on their site, it was enjoyable, but when I caught up to the current time, I didn't continue watching because I kept forgetting when it was on. I would see friends post about it online and go "Oh yeah, I should catch up on episodes before the finale." Then, I got distracted by it being my senior year of university. Also, it is a little overwhelming when you know that there will be a lot of characters to pay attention to, along with the lore. Then my roommate asked if I wanted to watch a little show called RuPaul's Dragrace. It never appealed to me to go back post-finale because EVERYONE BITCHED ABOUT IT. Why would I invest my time to watch a show that everyone didn't like? It was the "How I Met Your Mother" effect.

"I think it would have been a much larger part of the pop-culture conversation." I really don't think that's even possible. I lived through that period, and holy shit, everywhere I turned, people were talking about Lost. It was in both the pop-culture point-and-laugh show The Soup AND the short-lived nerd-themed rip-off The Wil Wheaton Project even though it had been cancelled years beforehand. Despite never watching a single episode of the show myself, I knew more about it than I ever wanted to at the time, seeing people make parodies of it, references to it, and even videos using action figures to recreate scenes from the show. It so fully permeated pop culture in a way I wouldn't see again until the first few seasons of Game of Thrones. This video of yours is... Two years old by the time I'm posting this, you're 100% never going to read this comment, and I don't disagree with basically anything else in the video even if my feelings towards Lost are not as fond as yours.
