This channel's definitive explanation of the mysteries and mythology from the seminal TV series LOST (2004). Part Three covers the nature of the game between Jacob and the Man in Black. We shall explore how "the rules" work and what they specifically cover; the history and ethics of The Others and how their society functions; the nature and purpose of The Candidates and how they were selected; and how the Man in Black "claims" and "infects" people.

@LOSTEXPLAINED108
@LOSTEXPLAINED108 Жыл бұрын
It's one of the biggest "what if" scenarios from the show for me. All we know for sure based on what the writers said is that Eko was supposed to have Desmond's flashes and be the one to deal with Charlie's death arc; that he would be drawn into a longer and more involved conflict with Locke over spiritual leadership of the island; and that they had a general arc mapped out for him for several more seasons to come. But they gave his flashes storyline to Desmond and other unknown elements to Ben (my guess is they transferred over the whole conflict with Locke). By Eko leaving, we got more time with Desmond and Ben, and it's hard to imagine LOST without either of their awesome arcs. But I can't help but wonder what would have been...

@LOSTEXPLAINED108

It's hard to know how much the writers had planned ahead in terms of plot at this point, but I feel like Eko might have been more likely to follow the path that we see Ben eventually take and becoming the one to kill Jacob, who is someone that Eko might have viewed as a false god. We see the DNA of this idea survive to some extent in Eko's final episode 'The Cost of Living' with the Man in Black trying to manipulate and control him by appearing as Yemi. I imagine that Yemi would have made more appearances throughout the seasons, guiding and coercing Eko along the way.

Do not mistake coincidence for fate ;-) Thank you for the concern though! This video would have dropped a month ago but I had to wait for a copyright claim to clear. They've always been very good about letting my videos run on this channel without restrictions, but sometimes they flag the IP automatically and the process to get the claim taken off can last up to 30 days before it is lifted. I would like to be releasing content more regularly but that does often throw a spanner in the works with the scheduling unfortunately. Thankfully, the Patreon has no such issues with copyright and they let you upload directly onto their platform now, so I can still deliver for the patrons during the long wait on KZfaq.

These videos are great for people who really didnt see the connections between the characters and that there really was an overall plan for the series and those who STILL think they were DEAD the whole time. There so many things I missed during the original run. I still wish they would do a sequel series starting with Hugo, Ben and Walt running the Island to see whats been going on the last 13 years starting with the 12 minute NEW MAN IN CHARGE epilog. They could have recruited a new group of scientists to study the Island and help those souls trapped on the Island like Michael to move on to the Sideways/Purgatory universe on their way to THE LIGHT. Some of those who left on Hydra Island on Flight 316 could make a return as well.

Excellent video! Absolutely loved it mate. I do wish that the rules had never reached Hurley though. In the flash sideways when the plane lands in L.A and Sawyer tells him that he shouldn't be telling people that he won the lottery, Hurley tells him it's okay because nothing bad ever happens to him. Hurley is happy in a world without the island, he does good for people. Then he meets Libby and remembers, I always get a bit sad about that. Hurley was happy to take over the role as protector and he surely would have made a fantastic one, but I can't help but be sad about how happy he was without the island.
@LOSTEXPLAINED108
@LOSTEXPLAINED108 Жыл бұрын
I don't believe Hurley would have stayed as a protector for centuries like Jacob and Mother did. It wasn't in his nature to want to hold power for a long time. He was the right man for the job in the aftermath of the Island War, but he wouldn't have wanted to watch all of his loved ones age and die around him. I think that's why we see him and Ben pick up Walt in the epilogue. It's heavily suggested that Hurley will pass the torch onto Walt in the years to come. In the sideways, everyone gets to experience what their lives might have been like without The Island and had Jacob not interceded in their fates. The important part of their lives was that they found each other; something that would not have been possible without their experiences on The Island. So, even though they suffered greatly there, they also found their soulmates along the way.

My thoughts on the cave, who used it and for what purpose, and my apologies if someone has already beaten me to it: Jacob used it to keep track of which lighthouse VIPs he had activated as candidates (i.e. touched), while putting the MIB on notice who the candidates were so that he would not attempt to kill them. Jacob would have written the names on the lighthouse dial to keep track of which VIP could be viewed at which degree setting, and he would cross out names when those settings would stop reflecting images (probably because they died). Jacob would have needed a separate list to keep track of the VIPs he had marked as candidates (with his touch), and by putting that list someplace MIB could find, he was alerting MIB as to who the game pieces were, which explains why he placed the scale at the cave entrance as a symbol to MIB that the cave is part of the game. "Here are the people you can't kill. Game on." We can deduce that MIB was not aware of the lighthouse because 1. the lighthouse can't be found unless you are looking for it ("I guess we weren't looking for it"), and 2. MIB seems clueless as to what the numbers represent ("Jacob had a thing for numbers"). This also explains why Kate's name is scratched out in the cave but not in the lighthouse. The island marked her as a VIP and she was still alive, and so her degree setting still reflected images in the lighthouse, but in the cave Jacob attempted to "deactivate" her as a candidate, so that the island might spare her to be mother to Aaron (I find it interesting he would do this considering he would likely have known that she comes back to the island in 2007, but I suppose there's a chance he didn't).

I guess one quite problematic area to address when undertaking an explanation exercise of a production like this, is that the original story arc and all of the facets within are very rarely able to be completely fulfilled and protected once the production is up and running, especially if a series like this is successful and runs for this length of time. There are always ongoing practical adjustments and limitations arising that require rewrites. The departure of Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as mentioned in this video is one such example. One of the most taxing and trying things for writers to undertake are fast and affective "write arounds" required when such situations present themselves. The agility and expertise demonstrated by writers in these situations are a testament to their talent, but I think it's salient to observe that a degree of erosion of the original concept occurs over time and multiple adjustments. However, you really have done a stellar job of breaking down the quagmire of detail and themes within this heavyweight production. Well done.

I get the reasoning for Dogen's test but if it was to see if he was the smoke monster, why did he ultimately say Sayid failed the test?
@LOSTEXPLAINED108
@LOSTEXPLAINED108 Жыл бұрын
We don't know the precise criteria for passing or failing that test beyond the obvious things. Such as: Does his skin sear? Does the ash repel his body? Does the electric current scramble and distort the apparition? If you watch closely, you can see Dogen really studying Sayid and how he reacts to pain and also how the ash spreads across his body. Basically, Dogen was not satisfied by Sayid's reactions, for whatever reason. And while the test proved that Sayid was not a smoke monster manifestation, it didn't mean he wasn't infected by the smoke monster. I think a big part of Dogen's scepticism is the result of the resurrection from death. Sayid should not still be alive. Dead is dead, or that's what they believe amongst The Others. And the only thing Dogen associates with "resurrection" and dead people physically walking around the island is Old Smokey. Sayid was never going to get a fair test. The "invigilator" had already predetermined that he was beyond saving. However, we know that wasn't true. Dogen turned out to be wrong about several things.

quite impressive the amount of work you must have put in to creating the content on this channel - given the huge effort its a shame you don't have more subscribers - Ive now watched part 1 to part 3 & look forward to the next part - as I am rewatching Lost ight now I may try to start watching your original 5+ hour video which I only found after watching part 3

Thank you! It has taken some time to build up an audience and subscribers are increasing each month. Slow and steady. The 5-hour supercut isn't as polished as the content I've been making in the past year -- it used a text-to-speech voice and lower quality resolution footage -- but if you don't mind that then it's still worth a watch. The versions I'm making now are superior in both quality and content (I am rewriting a lot of the old videos as I go through). It's up to you!

There are a lot of parallels between the Others and Israel in the Old Testament. God directly communes with his people and gives them his perfect law but the people become corrupt over time, twisting the law for the own ends and missing the point. Locke even calls them Pharisees.

Awesome videos! I was a huge fan of the series till it ended, then I thought the whole story had been ruined by rewrites and interference from ABC. But you have shown me the writers did have at least a semi coherent set of rules for a story they (almost) stuck to the entire time. Show is definitely worthy of a rewatch. Can’t wait for part 4!

Lost really was one of a kind. They tried their hardest to make a show that had every single genre jampacked in one. It's so silly but entertaining at the same time. I remember being a kid watching on cable and losing my shit each week after being blue balled. I was so glad to stream the whole thing on netflix a couple years ago.

Lighthouse theory. If we suppose that the mirrors in the lighthouse can watch candidates through space and time perhaps Jacob can see what they do on island as well. It could explain why he knows that Jin saw the smoke monster with the French team or why he knows the time travelers come back the night he dies.

Answer me this… How is it that Ethan didn’t recognized Locke after Oceanic 815 crashed? Locke teleported back to the Nigerian plane crash and tried to reason with Ethan (who shot him) about being their leader. Locke disappears with the flashes and Ethan is somehow cool with the idea that the passenger from Oceanic 815 looks exactly like the teleporting guy. That scene was unnecessary because Ethan never developed any interest towards Locke. It would have been a cool way to pay off his curiosity towards Locke if in season 1 Ethan asked suspicious questions. Such as: “Hey… are you sure we never met before?” , “Have you ever been shot?”, “Does the name ‘Richard’ mean something to you?”
@LOSTEXPLAINED108
@LOSTEXPLAINED108 Жыл бұрын
Ethan almost certainly would have recognised Locke. That interaction at the beechcraft couldn't have happened more than several years prior before Oceanic 815 crashed. And the fact that Locke disappeared before his eyes would have been quite the eye-opener! I'm sure he told Richard what he saw at the beechcraft and maybe Richard let him in on a few details about his previous encounters with Locke and other time travellers. It's worth noting two things here. The first is that we never get a scene where Locke and Ethan meet or interact one-on-one, so we have no idea what Ethan's questions or reactions were. The second is that we know Ethan *did* interact with Locke off-screen in a significant way because Locke tells Jack: "I hunted with Ethan. I spent time with him. I never sensed anything off." Which means Ethan was going out on hunts with Locke long before Boone became Locke's righthand man. I think Ethan, like many of The Others, recognised Locke was special and a mythical figure in many ways, which is why Ethan wanted to spend time with the man. But he doesn't give the game away. We know that Richard Alpert had met Locke before as well, and he doesn't let onto this fact when they cross paths in Season Three episodes 'The Man from Tallahassee' and 'The Brig'. In fact, we see that Richard actually helps Locke out and spends time with him. So, I imagine it was the same with Ethan. He didn't let onto the fact that he had come across Locke before, but he was drawn to him for obvious reasons.

@@LOSTEXPLAINED108 This is also a question I think about quite a lot! I'm honestly really glad someone else brought this up, because it bothered me for the longest time and I've spent quite a bit of time thinking about what the purpose of that scene was, and why it was necessary to include it. I have a theory of my own that I'll run by here :) Some important context I feel the need to preface with is, we know that by Season 5 (at the latest), the map to the end of the series was clear to the writers. Most, not all but CERTAINLY most things in Lost are deliberate. This channel is no stranger to how deep the rabbit hole goes and how big the iceberg of this show is, so the first time I had watched that scene with Ethan and Locke in early season 5, it couldn't escape my mind because much like OP, I had the same questions; "Why did they include that scene? That was obviously deliberate, so why did they feel the need to show us Ethan and Locke meeting prior to the crash?? Wouldn't Ethan have recognized him?????" To me, and why I *think* the writers did it was to further expand on the fear and jealousy that Ben feels towards Locke. So onward to the ACTUAL theory of mine (sorry lol, this might be a lot); might be a leap, but hear me out, I think Ethan might have assumed Locke was possibly a vision/apparition, even considering he shot him. We can assume Richard never told Ethan about John given how hostile he is toward him on encounter (along with the fact he doesn't believe him and then tries to kill him). We can also assume that Ethan is well aware of the supernatural and magic properties of the Island, so visions and apparitions aren't exactly out of the question for him, but NOT time travel, else that whole interaction would have gone pretty differently. So the sequence of events goes as follows; - Ethan is about to shoot this guy named John Locke who claims that Ben made him their leader - Locke then disappears in a flash of light before his eyes - Ethan is confused and reports back to Ben at the Barracks - He tells Ben "Hey so some weird shit happened in the jungle just now; this small plane crashed there and this bald guy was climbing up to get to it and then I shot him, but for some reason he knew my name? He said his name was John Locke and that apparently you made him our leader??? Of course, that's ridiculous, so I was about to put him down...but then he disappeared in front of me. The Island might have just shown me something, do you know anything about this?" - Ben responds "wtf who's John Locke? No. I don't know anything about this, why would I pass on leader to some guy I've never met?" Of course by that point, Ben has also had his share of visions on the Island, namely when he saw his mother in the woods in 'The Man Behind the Curtain', so he's likely to have believed Ethan saying he saw something as bizarre as what he claims. Knowing that Ethan might have had a premonition of sorts of a guy who would eventually usurp him, Ben would probably be shaken up, because why would he ever give up his position WILLINGLY? Jumping ahead a few years, Oceanic 815 crashes, and Ethan infiltrates the group. In that same group of survivors, he sees and meets Locke, the same guy he encountered a few years prior, and he most CERTAINLY would have told Ben. Ben doesn't take it entirely too well, considering that a few weeks prior he found out he had a tumor on his spine, on this Island that has healing properties, now learning that Ethan's supposed premonition of someone claiming to be their new leader is now on the Island in person. So ultimately, my assumption is that this ‘legend of John Locke' so to speak (to Ben exclusively), the man who would be Ben's worst nightmare, actually began with Ethan's encounter. It was only after he crashed on the Island in 2004 and The Others researched every bit into their personal lives that Ben knew he was dealing with a very real, very physical threat to him and his power. Sorry for the wall of text! Hopefully none of this is any stretch too, I figured I'd throw this out there if anyone else had this same question. I love this show and love discussing these things 🙂

@@LOSTEXPLAINED108 Thanks for reading, and I’m glad to hear it! Part of why I felt this way is because for the most part of early season 5, the show spends quite a bit of of time building up toward the death of Locke (obviously with how season 4 ended). So I figured, given within that group of episodes we were shown the events leading up to his death, it contextualizes that scene as a very subtle tease or whatnot. To me, I interpret the writers’ intent as, “Hey, wouldn’t Ethan have told Ben about his strange jungle encounter?” which would naturally lead to the audience asking something like ‘does that mean Ben knew of the name John Locke prior to the crash?’. This is *partly* assuming that Richard never told anyone about time traveling Locke, which wouldn’t be too far off, but even if he did, I feel it still would make sense within the context of everything that went down.

what i find interesting about jin and rousseau is that prior to season 5 they have never interacted with each other. there were a few times where they were near each other or in the same general area but never noticed each other due to rousseau interacting with other characters. i assume this is due to the writers deciding later on down the road to have jin encounter young rousseau during the time loop in season 5.

The information is dense, but it lights on every just long enough to solidify the point and then moves on. Have already listened to hours of the channel on mobile. Just a really good companion to a really great show. I was happy with the ending at air time. The show was about the characters to me , not the mysteries, so I was satisfied. All the mysteries are still loads fun and I appreciate the method this channel uses to investigate them. Just really good all around.

I don't tend to watch LOST KZfaq channels unless their content differs significantly from what I'm doing on here. The problem of consuming too much of what other people are thinking and interpreting about the mythology is that it can pollute your own thought process. You start comparing and contrasting how you're doing it with how they're doing it, and it can be a frustrating experience if there is a lot of disconnect. I think if your own ideas are going to be challenged and/or validated, it's better that it happens through the comment section where a dialogue can take place between yourself and others rather than seeking it out from people doing similar work. "Does this content creator agree or disagree with my ideas?" isn't nearly as helpful as "Do my ideas hold up to scrutiny when questioned by a viewer?" My scripts for videos have improved immensely as a result of my interactions on here. Don't get me wrong, I still need to do relevant research for the videos themselves, e.g. checking transcripts, revisiting creator interviews, finding soundbites, mining facts from Lostpedia, reading up on any historical/scientific contexts, etc. So, I'm immersed in all of that stuff. And I enjoy a good debate in the comments here. I just don’t actively need to watch or study other people's attempts to explain the series as I feel like I've gotten there on my own. Hope that makes sense!
