I think you may be confusing nova with supernova. A nova is an event which causes a star or star system (more often) to brighten temporarily. This often involves a white dwarf drawing in matter from a binary companion and temporarily heating it, causing an increase i brightness for a (relatively) short time. A supernova occurs at the end of the life of more massive stars, when they eject material from their outer layers violently (creating an even larger increase in brightness for a few months).

The whole business with the prospector in this episode turned out to be thumb-twiddling, with the sole purpose being to relieve the Jupiter 2 of its thruster control. But, they did have to put more into the effects of this episode, so they may have been looking to save money elsewhere.
