People really like to say that Cortes simply conquered the Aztecs but in reality he used the good old "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" tactic. Aka. Form an alliance with all the subjugated and extremely pissed off people with the Aztecs to take them down. And why they were pissed off with them? Well, the mandatory tribute of fresh sacrifices had a huge part on that, not all but it didnt help one bit.

Also worth noting, there were a number of major ideological/symbolic convergences between Mesoamerican and Catholic modes of thinking. The many variations of the Maize God cult (tracing as far back as the Olmecs at least) have the Maize God dying and resurrecting on an annual basis. As all Mesoamerican cultures believed that the gods made humans from maize dough and their own blood, there was a constant conflating between corn, corn's growth cycles, corn-based foods, and the human body/flesh/fluids. Conceptually, the Maize God was both the progenitor and father of humanity, and his flesh the sustenance mankind needs to survive. The Maize God also resurrects at the sacred center of the world, where the three hearthstones of creation were kindled and the other gods made humanity. From this central hearth, the Maize God was reborn as the World Tree, one which was often cruciform in Mayan art traditions. Not surprisingly, many Mesoamerican groups soon drew parallels between the imagery of the three hearthstones of creation, the reborn Maize God, and the crucifixion of Jesus at Golgotha (3 crosses, three hills, 3 hearthstones). Likewise, the Catholic eucharist resembled the aforementioned Mesoamerican conceptual relationship with the Maize God and his associated dietary staple. The eucharist also appealed to native warrior classes for far more base reasons. Human sacrifice and ritual cannibalism went hand in hand in Mesoamerican cultures. In such rare instances, this was part of native Mesoamerican "flowery wars," where warfare was focused on taking enemy warriors captive for ransom or sacrifice. Aztec warriors would regularly receive select cuts from sacrificial victims postmortem, and it seems that the consumption of that flesh was conceived of as taking on that dead warrior's power within themselves. Basically, when the missionaries traveling with Cortez started preaching about the eucharist, a lot of native warriors just heard "eat the flesh and drink the blood of this new god, and become immortal," and started lining up around the block to be baptized. Admittedly, this trend of voluntary conversion was far from universal, as amply demonstrated by many native campaigns of resistance and rebellion against the new religious order. Even so, the many symbolic parallels between native Mesoamerican faiths and Catholicism have allowed many of those old faiths to survive covertly in one form or another to the present (e.g. old gods being addressed as corresponding Catholic saints). Latin American Catholicism is a Gordian Knot of Christian orthodoxy and native syncretisms, which most people in Mesoamerica today just kinda accept. TL;DR Much of the conversion was voluntary, and few people in the region now care.

It is heavily dependent on the country. Some idioms could be normal in Mexico but not in other countries. "Cuquita" could be considered a diminutive of an already heavily modified name. Is not a real name, and certainly it could be considered a dirty word in certain regions.

There was a kid in my grade whose name was Nacho all the years we were growing up and then, suddenly, in high school, his name was Ignacio. It was a real surprise to me that Nacho wasn't his full name. And that's in rural Idaho.
