The reveal about Locke not being Locke is the biggest twist of the show: it changes what the basic core story of the shwow is about. And it's such an obvious twist in retrospect, that they did a GREAT job in hiding it in plain sight.

It's one of many moments where the show completely changes the viewers' perspective in an instant, making us reevaluate everything we thought we knew. Suddenly we learn that Locke is really dead and that we have to rethink what has been happening with fake Locke on the island. Another moment like that was the reveal of the flash-forwards and the realization that some of the survivors left the island. I don't know any other show that has moments like that, at least not in this intensity. And it's always executed so well, I get chills just thinking about some of these moments.

Totally a Juliet episode! I loved how in part 1 you mention how Juliet says so much with her silent reactions. There's a reason she's the only actress to be nominated for an Emmy for LOST. The Incident is an incredible scene that has such a major impact. It's heartbreaking and losing Juliet is excruciating. Her detonating the bomb? EPIC. Biggest television cliffhanger in the history of television, imo. Did they all die? Did their plan work? So many endless possibilities. Obama even postponed his address to appease LOST fans for the premiere offseason 6 because we had to wait so long, no one wanted to wait another week lol

I remember back in the day thinking "there's something wrong with Locke, he's never this self-possessed" (and when he is this confident in his actions, it's always immediately followed by another bout of lack of faith in himself). So, while I hadn't clicked until this episode WHO he was now (the loophole line gave it away)... I still spent all of S5 convinced he wasn't "our" Locke 🏝

I also didn't figure it out back then. Obviously Locke was different but I thought that he had gained some sort of insight through his death and that it would be revealed at some point. In a way it was obvious because we have seen other dead people appear before who were very obviously not who they pretended to be. But the writers in general were very good at hiding the truth in plain sight. Sometimes you'd feel good because you saw a twist coming but then you learn that this twist was just a smoke screen for a much bigger reveal that took you by complete surprise.

@@Jordan-Ramses that’s interesting because I could swear I see Terry O’Quinn mimicking some of Titus Welliver’s mannerisms, such as talking with a titled head, certain eyebrow raises etc. it’s subtle, and maybe I’m reading things into it that aren’t there, but having just binged Bosch, I can really see some Welliver in O’Quinn’s performance. 🤷‍♂️

I have always seen it the complete opposite way. Jacob needs Sayid back on the island and he would never have returned while Nadia was alive. Jacob therefore deliberately delays Sayid by asking directions...this then causes Nadia to stop in the road, turn around to wave the sunglasses at him...and get hit by the van. Without Jacob's intervention at that specific moment, nobody would have been hit by the van. It amazes me that so many people don't understand that Nadia was a sacrifice the island demanded.

It's interesting to me that your interpretation of Jacob's "What about you?" is the same as Ben's: "You don't matter to me." I've always felt that Jacob's intended meaning, in the context, was "So you felt left out. Now you've met me and you have a choice to make. You can choose to listen to 'Locke' and murder me or you can choose to listen to me and leave. What part do you want to play in this scenario, Ben? What kind of person do you want to be right now? What about you?"

Ditto. I saw it as a semi-patronizing statement geared to get Ben to reflect on his choices
@Pir-o
@Pir-o 2 жыл бұрын
And there could be other ways of looking at it as well - Ben always had a huge ego. He has to be the leader, he has to be the man behind the curtain, the mastermind know it all, smartest man in the room. Its always about him, he even got his daughter killed. He didn't want to protect the island, he just wanted to protect himself. He was always selfish. I'm not a religious person but there are clearly religious themes in the show. Jacob is a god like figure. So when Ben asks Jacob "What about me?", its like someone asking "Why didn't you listen to me god? Why didn't you help me?" and the God says "Cause you never helped anyone else in your life, why should I help you?"

I don't think it matters at all, but some episodes back Richard was convinced by Locke to go witness his birth and to visit him when he's a child, and that's what he does. But Jacob has been visiting the same people over the years, some recently and some when they were kids. But from what we've seen, Richard is the only one who has known Jacob in-person on the island. Wouldn't Jacob have told Richard about Locke, or maybe Richard and Jacob don't get in each other's business much? Or perhaps Richard knew about Locke before Jacob? Again, I don't think it matters at all but just something that came to mind and absolutely no spoilers in my comment cause I don't have a clue what's going to happen!

You also need to consider that LOST was on ABC. A regular 23 or 24 ep order. That's so much work for the writers and crew for making this amazing and one of a kind show. If it was made today, I'm sure it would be more condensed to 10 eps but in my opinion it wouldn't be the amazing show that it is with the strong character centric moments and specific pacing.

There is free will in Lost's time travel. Whatever happened, happened is the constant The players are the Variables. Through Desmond and Charlie in season 3, we learned that whatever happened, happened can be prolonged. That an event can be delayed and evade course correction if you push hard enough, yet you have to keep pushing. Yet this means the opposite can be doen as well and events can happen sooner than they initially did. Whatever happened still happens just earlier. That's the game. Making sure whatever happens, happens, the constants, while setting the table with dominos, the variables, in a manner that when each act in free will they hit the domino in front of them causing the desired chain reaction in the dominos around them as they to act in free will with in the boundary of whatever happened, happening.

IMHO, what Jacob does visiting each of the losties is, as he says when visiting Jack, giving them "a little push" to be themselves: Nadia's death pushes Sayid to killing all those people, 'cause he is a murderer. Helping Kate pushes her to a better path, away from what her own blood dictates, which eventually will make her hate her father and kill him. Helps Sawyer write the letter that will basically define his whole life. Helps Locke survive so he ends up in a wheelchair, which makes him even more miserable than before. Sun and Jin are reminded that their love can't be taken for granted and they will forever fight for it. And with Jack, subtly hints that "it only needed a little push", which I think points Jack into the "never let go" stubborness he's been showing all show. In Hurley's case, I think it's slightly diferent because he doesn't need a push to be himself, he just needs to accept it, and that's why Jacbo calls him by name and tells him he's not crazy. It's kind of Eloise saying to Desmond "you don't do this because you choose to, you do it because you're supoosed to"... they are supposed to be those things, and Jacob is threading their destinies like he's threading that tapestry in this finale opening.

From what her own blood dictates? Are you trying to say that Kate's criminal impulses were something she had inherited from her father? Wayne was a drunken abuser, not a criminal. Kate's penchant for lies and criminal behavior was born from her own personality traits - especially her insecurities. As for that letter - perhaps it wasn't a good thing that Jacob had not encouraged him to write it.
@elekvault
@elekvault 2 жыл бұрын
@@juanitajones6900 What I mean with Kate, is that she could've been scolded or something, if the man had called her mother, and maybe her behaviour redirected to a different thing, but Jacob stops that from happening so she can be the "Kate" she is supposed to. Remember in "What Kate Did", when she talks to her foster father and asks him "why didn't you kill him [Wayne]?", he answers "Because I don't have murder in my heart", implying she has it. All that Jacob does is giving that little push that derails Kate to eventually being a murderer, not because Wayne is, but because she is.

Every time I see Phil get impaled by that cable, I want to get up and cheer. That little shit. Most satisfying death of the series. 😁 It's crazy to think the whole last half of this season took place over a mere 4 days. 😮 Pretty PLEASE try to put out the series finale all in one go. 😬 I won't mind if you skip a usual drop day for the show in order to do it. It just won't feel right if you split it up over the course of a few days.

YES! Thank you! The minute I saw the actual scene play out, I was stunned to realise that Jack had never given his dad ANY credit for actually being the one to provide him with this vital strategy!! He told Kate this story as though he had had the idea to count to 5 all by himself! It was the moment I started to properly re-evaluate everything we'd been told about Christian...because we'd only ever really seen him through Jack's eyes.

One of the best lines in the series is how Jacob responds to Ben, "What about you?" With the emphasis on the "about." This isn't a question about how Ben is doing, or a request for information. This is a god, asking a mortal, "What relevance do you have to me?" The important line is what Jacob gave him earlier: "You have a choice." Jacob can't control who Ben is, or what happened to Ben, because those were the choices of Ben and the men and women who intersected Ben's life. And he has a mixture of shit choices (like the Purge) and good choices (his genuine love for his adopted daughter Alex, and saving her in the first place). It very closely mirrors the book of Job. God and the devil make a bet that the most righteous man in the world, Job, would curse God if God took away all the blessings laid on Job for being faithful. So God lays a series of calamitous events, and Job never curses God. But even at the end of the Book of Job, he wants to hold God to account: Job 31: 35-37: "35 (“Oh, that I had someone to hear me! I sign now my defense-let the Almighty answer me; let my accuser put his indictment in writing. 36 Surely I would wear it on my shoulder, I would put it on like a crown. 37 I would give him an account of my every step; I would present it to him as to a ruler.)" And God comes down in a tempest, and basically answers Job the same way Jacob answers Ben: Job 38:1-3: "1 Then the Lord spoke to Job out of the storm. He said: 2 “Who is this that obscures my plans with words without knowledge? 3 Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer me." God goes on a long rant, and finishes thus: Job 40: 1-2, 8, : "The Lord said to Job: “Will the one who contends with the Almighty correct him? Let him who accuses God answer him!...8 Would you discredit my justice? Would you condemn me to justify yourself?"

["And he has a mixture of shit choices (like the Purge) and good choices (his genuine love for his adopted daughter Alex, and saving her in the first place)."] So, you're saying that Ben's decision to join the Others' purge of the Dharma people was a bad idea? Speaking of which, why was the purge ordered?

You need to start considering that the island is a character with motives and agendas of its own. We are 5 seasons in at this point it is certainly not a spoiler to say when things happen that cannot be explained it's most likely that the island is the reason. The island causes miracles to happen the island causes the unexplained to be possible keep up the great work and for the love of God don't split up the finale.

There's a lot of debate in the fandom about Jacob's intent to Ben: "What about you?" Did he never care about Ben? Is he cruel? Indifferent? Or, in my interpretation, he is challenging Ben to take responsibility for his own actions (which he rarely does, saying he's doing it for The Island, when he's doing it for himself). Also... We call this John "Flocke" (Fake Locke).
@juanitajones6900
@juanitajones6900 2 жыл бұрын
Most of the major characters on this show were bad at taking responsibility for their actions - including Ben. Again, I don't see anything special about Ben's bad deeds, in compared to the bad deeds of the other characters. If Jacob was challenging Ben to take responsibility for his actions, why help fuel Sawyer's desire for revenge, which led the latter to commit murder? Twice. And why allow Kate to escape the consequences of her little act of theft - especially since Kate had failed to consider the consequences of her later misdeeds?
@kbenedict3685
@kbenedict3685 2 жыл бұрын
@@juanitajones6900 They were, but Ben's actions are so much worse. He killed his father and was part of the Dharma Initiative mass-murder. He forced his daughter's boyfriend in an indoctrination room with his eyes taped open. He ordered Walt to be kidnapped. He killed Keamy well knowing people on the boat would die. He manipulated Sayid to assassinate people. He would've murdered Penny if Desmond hadn't stopped him. He murdered Locke. He killed that guy on the beach. He killed Jacob. That's a lot of awful acts, I'm not sure how those things are comparable to Sawyer's revenge and Kate's actions. (Though Sawyer's first murder was really bad) I like Ben, he's a great villain, but he's definitely a truly awful person. That being said Jacob clearly allowed Ben to be in power despite his actions, and instructed the others to kidnap people so he wasn't great either.

@@DRush76 The main characters? Of course. But it's pretty hard to get worse than mass-murder. I also can't think of any main character having as many bad deeds as Ben. Not unless you think things like scamming is equal to cold-blooded murder anyway. Maybe Sayid? He's done a lot of awful things but I'd still argue Ben is worse by far. Any of The Others or Jacob? Sure, but not really main characters. I think to say many characters are bad in some way is fair, but to say it's equal to Ben seems silly to me.
@DRush76
@DRush76 2 жыл бұрын
@@kbenedict3685Sayid tried to murder a boy in his early teens in order to change his life. And he has murdered or caused the deaths of other people before and after his time on the island. Kate had used an innocent child as her personal comfort blanket and kept said child from his grandmother for nearly three years for selfish reasons. She had also murdered her father because she learned that she was related to him. Sawyer had murdered three people in the space of three months in the name of misguided revenge. As for Widmore . . . that man probably has more blood on his hands than any other character, aside from the MIB. He sanctioned the Dharma Purge. He had ordered Ben and Ethan to kill Danielle and baby Alex. Through Keamy, he was responsible for the deaths of a good number of people on the island during late Season Four. And judging from his behavior in the 1950s, I can only assume that he has a lot of blood on his hands, personally. It's not silly to me that Ben's crimes are equal to many other characters on this show. Is it possible that you're reluctant to fully face the sins and crimes of the 815 main characters - aside from Michael? Or even face the sins and crimes of characters like Widmore and the MIB?
