Amongst the many communities that live in the coastal state of Maharashtra, is a community of Jews called Bene Israel. While the facts of their origins are lost in time, some of their recipes have survived. From a part of the community settled in Pune comes a recipe that used to be prepared mainly on the day of Sabbath. In the compound of the only synagogue in Pune, Aditya Bal joins the members in preparing that signature dish, 'Fish Alberas'. His quest takes him next to the bustling city of Mumbai, on the outskirts of which Bene Israelis live. Here, another ancient recipe is resurrected - 'Saat Padri'. As they make this delicacy, Aditya discovers the importance of the number '7' in Jewish tradition.

So similar to Portugese dish called Caldeirada, a fish stew cooked with onions, potatoes and tomatoes along with white wine.

I don’t understand why people are being critical in the comments. The anthropologist clearly mentioned that the Shanivar tells have forgotten a lot of things about their culture and religion. So it’s not unusual that she is using kokum and curry leaves. As an Konkani, the way she made the dish was unique. Fish without chilli and garlic! How’d does that taste?

Looks more konkani, because of Maharashtra influence. It's sort of adapted recipe and not a lost recipe of Israel.

This is a popular dish around our area ! Sorry to say this is not any lost dish!! In Kerala we call this the fish Molly or fish stew.we serve it with palappam !! 😂

I feel the research here is inadequate and lacking in the dish information. This dish has curry leaves and tomatoes, which has no explanation whatsoever why these are used as I dont think they were in Isreal. If the dish was adopted then it would have been good to talk about any similar dish which exists in Isreal.
