i cut this together so i can show it to people who think that the lost finale revealed the island was purgatory, a rather silly thing to think.
anyone who thinks the island being purgatory is a good ending or would look at the show and say "yeah it was definitely purgatory" is either lying or just plain wrong.
if the island was purgatory the whole show would be pointless and everything after season 1 or 2 was just a load of meaningless crap, and you know it.
(SPOILERS LIE BELOW)
the only thing that would indicate that the island was purgatory was a shot in the final credits,
where you see the plane on the shore with no losties. in this same interview, damon explicitly states ABC added that and he was completely against that being in the episode.
EVERYTHING ELSE IN THE SHOW indicates the island and everything about it IS REAL
including christian saying "EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENED TO YOU WAS REAL"

I guess back in the days, when the finale was aired, many people just thought that identifying with the criticism that built around Lost over the years was the coolest thing to do. Most of them, as at today, still think they were all dead.

Then why wasn't Aaron portrayed as a four-year-old? Why was he a baby? If he was a baby and this supposed afterlife that means he never grew up to be a four-year-old or older. Also why is Michael and his son not there? If it was a place where they put themselves in order to meet up again before crossing over why are they not there? Also why is John's woman Helen not there?
@AHSears
@AHSears 2 жыл бұрын
@@nicolereadstarot Season 6 showed the in-between world where they eventually found each other again. The circumstances in that in-between world were changed, re-ordered, reversed, etcetera, in order that these characters *could* be brought back together through them. Aaron is a baby in this in-between world, because his birth is the connection between Claire and Kate that brought them together the first time. Ji Yeon was not even born yet there because that was how Sun and Juliette connected the first time. As for Michael and Walt, I imagine they aren't there because Michael betrayed the others and they weren't on the island for long. Helen was never on the island.

See, what I think happened is during the finale Christian asks Jack "Why are YOU here?" and Jack realises he died. As soon as that happened, I think 80% of the audience starting shouting at the TV calling bullshit or saying they knew the island was purgatory the whole time, and didn't stop to listen to Christian literally explain that the island stuff was all real in the very next line.

IT DID HAPPEN, THE ISLAND STORY WAS ALL (REAL) LOST: SEASON SIX FINALE, EXPLAINED!! Okay a lot of people don't understand the ending to lost, so I'm going to explain it as simple as I possibly can. All the (Island Story) was REAL it 100% happened, okay so now we are clear on that, lets move on. The (Flash-Sideways) were a "Purgatory" world or in better terms (Heaven) and what ever happens in that world like for example (Sawyer) being a cop, (Hurley) has good luck ect is just what they have made, its like a world they have created for themselves until they finally MOVE ON. Now its not until everyone has finally died that they move on together in that church, that could have been 30 years plus depending on when they died, for example (Jack) died on the island at the end of season six, he then entered the (Flash-Sideways) world waiting for the rest to Pass Away so they can move on. Kate could have died 30 years after Jack did, so really the people in the (Purgatory) world could have been waiting a long long time. In the end they all move on together, the people who were not in the church has no (Redemption) or had unfinished business that's why they could not move on YET, Like (Michael) for example he was stuck on the island because he had to earn his redemption back for killing Anna Lucia and Libby. Desmond had to put out the LIGHT thinking it would stop the (MIB) and hoping it would keep the island from destroying itself, but really it was JACK that had to keep the LIGHT alive and keep the heart of the island SAFE, so he would not let John Locke's death be in vain. Jack now believed every word Locke was saying about DESTINY. Hurley and Ben take over the Island while in the meantime Jack, Claire, Sawyer, Richard, Miles, Frank, FLY AWAY on the plane. Now the MIB is dead JOHN LOCKE now remembers in the FLASH-SIDEWAYS world. Now when they touched each other they had a (FLASH) and that made them remember their best time in the past, and that happens to be the time they spent on the island. They remember each other and then realise they are in a Purgatory world. But yes everything that happened on the ISLAND did in fact happen it was all REAL,

If the island was real, how does the island care about Michael not having redemption and so not letting him leave? You see what I mean? Either it is all symbolic or it is not. You cannot have it both ways. Choosing a middle road is weak.

@@AmadeusLegend Michael was brought back to the island, and did find redemption by helping those he left behind though. He also talked to Hurley, as an island ghost, and couldn't move on which I reckon is similar to why Ben stayed outside the church. He wasn't ready, as he still had guilt and couldn't forgive himself. Hurley gave both Michael and Ben forgiveness/understanding but ultimately it's up to them themselves. The world between worlds in the last season, between life on Earth and life on the Otherside, was created by those who wished to move on together. Michael wasn't one of them, and Ben wasn't ready.

So many people fixated on closing shot of the plane wreckage on beach as credits rolled thinking they were dead the whole time. They totally ignored the conversation between Jack and his father in the back of the Church as Christian explained that the Sideways/Purgatory or whatever you call it was a place created by the people who died as a place to heal and reconnect before moving on to what layed beyond the church door and the bright light - most before Jack died on the Island - others long after like Hugo, Ben, Walt, Bernard, Rose, those who 6 left Hydra Island on Flight 316 and even Vincent the dog. In the After Show - the series was about the characters. I saw myself in several of the characters - I learned alot about myself watching it. I hoped they would have used the 12 minute epilog where Ben and Hugo sprang Walt from the mental hospital and went back to the Island to launch a sequel series where they would recruit others to unlock the mysteries of the Island. And bring back some of those left on Flight 316 as well.

It’s crazy that Damon even had to explain this at all. Like, I can see why people thought the island was purgatory throughout the first season because that’s a totally viable theory. But for Seasons 2-5, did people actually think that they were still in purgatory while simultaneously creating stuff like The Hatch, Dharma Initiative, the Black Smoke, Widmores Freighter, Ben and the Other etc. Just use some common sense lol

The ending was clear, but it wasn't interesting to me, and it felt like it wasn't how the show was supposed to end originally. I didn't care about what became of the characters, I cared more for an explanation of what the island was outside of it being a "cork" that holds evil in. And then we see the "cork" and it's actually a cork and not symbolic, so I don't even know what the island was meant to be. Good vs evil and we go to heaven when we die isn’t very interesting imo.

brian bowen Why do so many people have such a hard time understanding that the Flash sideways scenes are in a timeless alternate reality purgatory. This means, that people who died in season 1, people who died in season 6, and people who died long after, even years after the events of the end of the show, all end up going to the flash sideways purgatory before moving on to Heaven. So when they are all in that Church in the final scene, that’s a timeless place, meaning, even people who died years in the future after Jack, would still end up in that Church at that exact moment to move on, because it’s outside of time, and is there for them all to meet back up to move on together!

I think it's the fact of questions, like why did the bomb not kill them? Why did time not just reverse time and they resume from the plane ( I guess there is no right or wrong when it comes to changing time by going back in time and stopping from something happening since no one has ever done it as far as we know) so part of their lives were that they went back in time it didn't reverse their lives but it reversed others lives, eg how could they be alive if they go to a time where they are not born yet, but then again what if Ben went back in time too, would his child version be alive? if so, did they age while they were back in time? What if they died before they were born? So many questions I could make

DΛZ the time travel rules of lost is ‘whatever happened, happened’ - you can’t change the past no matter what you do. You can observe and be part of the past, but you are a passenger only and cannot re-write any of it (whatever you do has already happened before and you were simply unaware of it). The bomb’s energy was cancelled out by the pocket of energy within the island that was tapped into during ‘the incident’, so no one died as a result of that.

I insisted they were not, but I think he either thinks I have a screw loose or am clearly wrong because he's heard that so many times. (Instant polls taken at the time the finale aired always had majorities of viewers satisfied with the ending--an ending that was in no way easy to pull off). Now, if you'll trust me, check out HBO's "The Leftovers" and HBO's "Watchmen" series (both written/produced by Damon Lindelof of "Lost" fame...or infamy...depending). "The Leftovers" is extraordinary in that it is three seasons, but the book it is based on ended with the end of the first season. It wasn't a perfect first season, but when it was good, it was REALLY good. But what is so remarkable is that just when it seemed no story could possibly be left--and all the material from the book was exhausted in the first season--the SECOND season hit the ball out of the park, out of the city, out of the STATE. It is really awe inspiring to experience something creatively in that way. Only a couple of times in my life have I imagined I knew where a story was going, only to have a master craftsman show me how it is really done. (As an aside, I remember George R.R. Martin bad mouthing the "Lost" finale, and now it seems to be clear that it was far superior to the GOT finale...AND George hasn't finished his damned books yet, either. Lindelof pulled off "Lost" on network television. It didn't work perfectly, but given the limitations of life and television, it was as close as you could get.) FYI: "The Leftovers" and "Watchmen" are both on HBOMax.

The Jughead detonation has nothing to do with the flash-sideways. Juliet got a glimpse of the flash-sideways and eventually passed over there but that was because she was dying, not because the H-bomb going off had some magical properties. It didn't set off the flash-sideways. The flash-sideways has always existed outside of time. The show tricks us because it looks like they're connected in S6E1. Jughead goes off, the survivors have played their part that's integral to the past and gets sent to their original timeline to continue executing the plan that fate has decided for them. In fact, the first moment of S6 (Jack waking up on the plane) happens just after the very last moment of the show (Jack dying). Jack dies and "instantly" wakes up in the flash-sideways, which has always existed.

It was a good ending once you watch it again. It’s horrible to you if you don’t understand or never heard of purgatory. Most of us (Americans) are not Catholic so we don’t know what purgatory is. For example I am what’s called a Oriental Orthdox Christian. I grew up in the Greek Orthodox Church. We don’t believe in purgatory nor do any of the Protestants or most denominations who of Christianity that stemmed post separating from the Catholic Church. All of us who are not Catholic almost literally aren’t because of belief systems that men created like purgatory. In America we have separation of church and state. There’s no way we would have heard of purgatory in school here and especially not so because America was founded off foundations FAR from the Catholic Church. Once I started thinking about things and then I’m not sure what it was, but somehow purgatory came in my mind. I remembered that’s something the Catholics do and never paid it any mind. That’s when I was like, “GENIUS!” That’s how the writers of LOST were able to pull this off! Who the hell is Catholic? As an overall people (Americans) we’re not a Catholic nation. Then that’s how LOST finally made sense to me. I had to watch some KZfaq videos of exactly what Purgatory was. All the scenes of the LOST characters going back to their lives during the show. The ending where they were all waiting for each other in the church FINALLY made sense to me. They entered purgatory together because they all were on the plane at the same time. You give or take Ben and some who were on the island already weren’t but you notice Ben didn’t cross into the light when they did. It was a very good ending for those who want to understand it’s true meaning. I hope this helps anyone who still struggles with the show and the ending.

im not sure if anyone mentioned this since theres too many comments but the last season was two places the island and the world but if you remember what ben said to hugo that he can do things differently and at the end said he was a good leader and ben was a good number two. ben did not leave because he is in charge and was not ready to give up command since he had some more penance to do. And Hurley did things differently which means the parallel life was the new island. Instead of making the island the purgatory of sorts, hugo made it like the real life with everyone connected to find each other, with them all stuck until every last one of them realized that they were dead. I think they did a very good job but could have did a touch more explaining at the end. Hope this helps

Man, i got some real questions. 1. Why was MIB pure evil? He seemed like a normal dude that just wants to experience the world. Why did he turn into smoke? 2. How did the island and Jacobs mother get thier power? 3. Why did Jacob allow the others to kill the entire Dharma group? That seems pretty evil if you ask me.
@lucasfroese5123
@lucasfroese5123 4 жыл бұрын
1. MIB was “evil” because his mother passed him over for island protector but still wouldn’t let him leave the island, then he killed his mother so Jacob “killed” him by throwing him into the core of the island - really it just made him the smoke monster and therefore evil incarnate so it reinforced him not being allowed to leave. Everything he did throughout the series was an attempt to manipulate the survivors into killing Jacob / destroying the source of the island so he could leave. But if he had left he probably would have destroyed the world lol. 2. The island always had its power - it’s eternal. Jacob’s mother had her power from being the island’s protector. It’s not known how long she had that job. 3. The rules of the “game” Jacob and the MIB were playing to manipulate the survivors and defeat each other were that they could not directly kill or save any of the island’s residents. Jacob cared less about “being good” and more about the macro greater good. He didn’t have any interest in stopping Ben from killing the Dharma initiative because it didn’t matter in his role. Jacob really was just a guy who was given a job and wanted to do that job. He didn’t exist to make the island a paradise for anyone, he existed to keep evil from spreading across the planet and destroying humanity. A little genocide wasn’t super important in contrast.
@Damon242
@Damon242 4 жыл бұрын
King Kai 1. MIB wasn’t ‘pure evil’, but he was a bitter entity that existed without consequences and did what he could to get what he wanted. As far as why they couldn’t just let him leave, it’s set up that it’s not him but rather what he brings with him - what affected Rousseau’s crew, Claire, Sayid, etc. what he has become and what that brings with it must be contained to the island. 2. The light - that’s the answer, and it essentially represents magic. Like the Deep Magic in Narnia or The Force in Star Wars, it’s just something that exists but isn’t explained because no one in-universe knows (Dharma claims that there is an enormous pocket of electromagnetism that the island has formed around and that it connects to all other pockets around the globe, the mother thinks that the light exists in ever man and if it goes out on the island then it goes out everywhere). It’s part of the make up of a sci-fi fantasy setting (like the force) and you can only really get insight on the rules of how it works, not what it actually is. 3. Jacob had nothing to do with it, neither is it revealed that he would have actually cared. The decision to destroy Dharma was made by Charles and Eloise who led the Others at the time, and was facilitated by Ben.

***** I know MIB tells jack in season 6 that he was pretending to be his dad just to lead them to water , but that doesn't mean it's true ,he could of been lying , why ? I don't know , but I didn't believe him for several reasons: 1- why would he help them? 2- when Alana goes to "jacob's hut" she says that MIB hasn't been their in a long time and that "someone else " has been using the place. 3- in the flash forward in season 4 jack sees his dad in the hospital . and as far as I know smoky can't leave the island and that all he ever wanted to do . so yeah those are my reasons to question the legitimacy. However , "Christian Shepard " motives when addressing John Locke whether in the cabin or at the wheel seem to be in line with the MIB'S ie ( you need to die , sacrifice yourself etc) and it was definitely smoky in the form of Horace in the dream that lead John to the cabin. so I think it's safe to assume that he could have been a representative of the MIB of some sort . but yes for the time being I can't think of a better explanation other than him being the "MIB" but still doesn't explain how he left the island and personified things like saying " Tell my son I said hi" it could of course just be manipulative to convince them to come back. oh well I'm done ranting ,but there defo is some interesting Christen Shepard Theories online.

This video omits a crucial bit of Damon's interview. Just before this video's final cut at 2:25, Damon originally said, "One of the things that we always wanted to do, and were passionate about doing, was exploring the idea of purgatory both figuratively and literally. And this was so obvious to the audience that within three or four episodes of the of the first season of the show they were like it's purgatory..." So the island may not have been the afterlife, but it *was* a figurative purgatory. It was a place where purgatory-like experiences happened to the characters. The purgatory plot line makes more sense and ties up many loose ends, more that the true ending does. Lets face it. The show runners originally planed for the purgatory ending, but then when people worked it out a few episodes in, they thought "oh shit! We have to think up another reason for all of this now, because we don't want people to know what will happen" and so they painted themselves in a corner and stated the reason for strange things as "because it's a magic island".

Its good you have your theories, but the interviewer and many, many people did not not understand the ending. There are no purgatories in lost, not the flash sideways nor the plain crash. @@erakattack I took the "we are in hell" to mean figuratively not literally. But at that point they were already moved on from the purgatory ending, so you could be right. Early on in Series 1, people died when they resolved something from their past lives (flashbacks), as if they were in purgatory as restless spirits and they have to resolve their demons as it were, to move on to the after life (to "die" again in purgatory). - e.g. Boon and his sister, once he got over his sister, he died. Same thing happen with Echo. It ties up really well, until they changed it.

The flash-sideways WAS real though... Damon and Carlton said so. It is NOT purgatory. The final episode is Jack dying and his life flashing before his eyes. This is why Christian comes back to life and why his son David disappears and why the church is engulfed in a white light. Jack died. Part memory and part dying thoughts coming together. Bringing everyone together before he dies. Pretty simple.

Is it going to be the same time period as in "The Lost Special" by A.C. Doyle between the train's disappearance and the blackmail note?

Why should they have? If the whole show is based around religious elements, why should they have explained literally everything with hard scientific facts when most of religion is blind faith? That’s why it’s called a leap of faith... The whole point of the show wasn’t to answer questions- it was to emphasize what’s actually important in life, and to acknowledge that no single person has all the answers. Yes, they added so much mystery to it because it would have been boring otherwise. To give what you wanted would have ruined the message and, therefor, the integrity of the show as well. You’re not supposed to know everything, some things in life don’t have a clear cut answer, but everything has purpose, and everyone needs someone. That’s what you’re meant to focus on.

Whereas for me the flash sideways is a death experience - Sawyer/Juliet reunion occurs as she is dying (‘it worked’, ‘we can go dutch’), we then understand that Desmond died momentarily in ‘Happily Ever After’ when subjected to the machine, and Jack’s death and the reunion are occurring simultaneously for him as he is traversing back through the bamboo trees then finally closing his eyes as in the flashsideways the light consumes them all (it’s funnily the very same ending as Titanic). Whatever the mechanics of it are, the flashsideways appears to occur for the individual as they are dying in real life - similar to the concept of ‘life flashing before your eyes’. It packs some powerful emotional beats and I accept that it’s an independent storyline in the final season - I just personally wish that they didn’t do flashes of any kind in the final season and made the entire thing island-based so that you really felt the impact of the deaths and the characters’ isolation from the rest of the world. Still, I have a hard time understanding people who write the whole final season or series off because of the flash sideways which has nothing to do with everything else that goes on and could be literally removed from the final season without having any impact.

The show is open for interpretation. They explain it as, everything that happened, happened...or everything that happened was real. This is because, death is a part of life and life is a part of death. Both are real. In this interpretation, they are giving us stages of life after death, which is why they call it REAL or EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENED, WAS REAL. This show is taking us through this specific group of people living through and experiencing these stages. Everyone does not experience life the same and everyone does not experience death the same...for that reason, some people MOVE ON or find the acceptance of death faster than others. That is why Jack was the last of the group to realize he was dead....he fought hardest against the acceptance of dying or being dead. These people have experienced bombs, electromagnetic events, an island moving, monster attacks, time travel etc... and it was all real in the sense that it was another stage of death/life for them to experience to get closer to their acceptance of what has happened to them. We know that if a bomb blew up in your face, you are probably not going to survive that, we know that time travel is not real, we know that an island cannot be moved by turned a wheel. We know these things but this show challenges everything we know and believe because of how the story is told, which is what makes it one of the best shows of all time.

Did you not listen to Christian Shepherd in the final scene. He said, this place is timeless, there is no now here, the most important time of your life was the time you spent with these people (on the island), some of them died before you Jack, and some of them died long after, but this is a place you all made together so that you could wait for each other to move on. So effectively this is how it works, this flash sideways reality where the Church episode is located is purgatory, it’s outside the bounds of time, meaning people who died early in season 1, people that died during season 6, and people who died years later after the events of the end of the island story, would all show up in this purgatory in the same “moment”, because it’s a place that exists outside of time, and it waits for all of them to die, so they can move on together, so it’s not so much that Hurley is on the island at the same time as this Church stuff is happening, but that this Church scene is happening in the far future after the last person from the group died, because that’s how it would be, it would just seem like the present moment as soon as each of them arrived, but in reality a lot of them have been waiting there for a long time, but since this place is outside of time, that long amount of time doesn’t have to relate to a long amount of time in the real world. All of the events on the island happened as the characters real lives, then they moved on to purgatory, all at separate times as they died at separate times, but they didn’t meet up and move on to Heaven, until all of them died in the real life!

Um, that wasn't the last shot. The last shot was of the beach, with the wrecked plane on it and NO SURVIVORS running around freaking out like in the very beginning. As in, yeah, the plane really crashed, and everyone on board died. Everything that happened after that was a matter of the "lost" souls trying to redeem themselves in purgatory (aka, not in the real world as this douche is trying to say). Apparently most of them did redeem themselves, represented by them being together (in an altered "reality") in the end, which was actually more like a shared fantasy or dream than anything that could be described as "real".
