Learn how to measure the voltage present in any High voltage spark using this outdated, yet sufficient, method! Air's Dielectric breakdown voltage is 3,000,000v/meter, or 30kV/cm. This allows us to use distance, as a tool to measure. It may not be the most exciting subject, but it certainly is useful! If using firefox, I appear severely sunburned...

It works very well. I do prefer voltage dividers. That way I cab use meters or even a scope to see ripple as the current is drawn at different power levels.

Great tip! Would love to see a video of your Tesla coil. The resonant top is smaller than most I have seen.
@PlasmaChannel
@PlasmaChannel 7 жыл бұрын
Ah, Thanks! I always design my coils to be fully self contained, and I design the bases around the resonant top. I really am picky about appearance, so the top is what determines the rest of the dimensions when I build! As for the topload, you'd be amazed what you can build using nothing but supplies from Home improvement stores ;P

I have a few questions : 1) What kind of power supply did you use for the voltage multiplier 2) Were you grounded or you were were just growing static electricity when you were holding the screw driver 3) What is the input frequency of the voltage multiplier 4)how many steps of the multiplier circuit were involved

When you were demonstrating the arc length with the screwdriver and spheres your arm was twitching with each discharge. I was wondering if this is reflexive or was the arc somehow causing a muscle twitch?
@PlasmaChannel
@PlasmaChannel 6 жыл бұрын
Those were contractions via the shock. They are extremely short in pulse, meaning safe for heart. But, still cause momentary arm twitch

The voltage varies in a nonlinear way with spheres. When the curvature begins to be significant the measured voltage gets smaller. With small separations compared with the radius of the spheres the approximation works, however. See www.coe.ufrj.br/~acmq/hvmeasurements/

Hi can I use this method to rougly calculate the output of a Tesla coil? According to it just 30 cm of discharge would be equivalent to almost 1 million volts: it seems to me a lot. Otherwise there is another way to know the output of a Tesla coil? thank you!
@PlasmaChannel
@PlasmaChannel 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can. However, being AC it will be less accurate. Also, you'd need to measure a single pulse at once, not an arc.
@biozen1478

Hi, how can we apply this in the 100kV - MegaV range? You should also make a video showing effects of various electrode shapes on the breakdown voltage, to help these youtubers stop making false claims.
@PlasmaChannel
@PlasmaChannel 5 жыл бұрын
Man, all the false claims drive me mad. Scaling up to 1,000,000 volts....im sure this method would still work assuming air across the gap is uniform, temperature is uniform, and the voltage pulse is clean.

Hey J, We know voltage is around 10kv to 20 kv but, What is output current of flyback transformer? Which gives 20kv. Any value, approximate range?
@PlasmaChannel
@PlasmaChannel 6 жыл бұрын
If you are referring to my flyback in this video, it is approximately 2-4 mA of current. But flyback transformers output over 100mA if designed correct.
@Shirinnikhat
@Shirinnikhat 6 жыл бұрын
Plasma Channel In general Sir J, Color TV flyback transformer. Which gives 20kv, 2 to 4mA current is correct? And what does voltage multiplier multiples its input current? Two questions are there. Please

Plasma Channel Thanks sir. I think because of charge flow in surface. Same as Faraday cage?
@the_ALchannel
@the_ALchannel 7 жыл бұрын
Um... no, you're not exactly right, 30kv/cm value works only for gaps more than 4 times smaller than the diameter of one of the spheres, other way the electric field decreases pretty quickly, so 20kv is just about the limit of this measuring device; you can not measure voltage from your voltage multiplier with these spheres; not to offend you or anything, I'm just tired of people (not you) on the internet claiming that their 30cm spark is 1 million volts or something like that
@PlasmaChannel
@PlasmaChannel 7 жыл бұрын
I too am bothered by large claims of voltage. When people claim their tesla coil creates a million volts.......Yeah.....try putting that coil on 1 break per second and measure the individual spark length, not the arc built up from 100 sparks per second.
@davemwangi05
@davemwangi05 5 жыл бұрын

1kv/mm tends to hold close to true for spark points, aka ends of wire.
@dirkk82
@dirkk82 7 жыл бұрын
ah, so then i wasn't too far off as i did measure some of my HV transformers with a probe for comparison and it was very close to accurate .. then again i always used spark gaps with sharp ends as they conduct better at least in measuring :-)
