@billiam I just got to the part of the video where Billiam discusses episode 15 of season 1 -- "Homecoming" -- and I slightly disagree with him that the viewer isn't given enough information to piece together Charlie's motivation for killing Ethan. Forgive the following essay, lol. I've written extensively on Lost as a scholar, so I tend to go on a length. I'm repeating something that another fan has been said, but the Charlie flashbacks in "Homecoming" seems reverse engineered to get to the concluding lines of the last flashback in the episode. Lucy, the girlfriend, asks Charlie why he took the job selling copiers for her dad, and he says: "I just wanted you to know I could take care of you." And Lucy says back: "You'll never take care of anyone" and slams the door in his face. The flashback is adding to the impression that Charlie wants to take care of someone in a romantic relationship, and that he sees doing so as a measure of his self-worth. In the earlier episode, "Raised by Another," after Charlie has helped Claire through some false labor pains, he says to her: "I told you I'd take care of you." And then they're both kidnapped by Ethan, and Charlie is hung from a tree -- he "fails" in taking care of Claire, like he failed in taking care of Lucy. So I think the show implies Charlie kills Ethan out of a need to show he can "protect" Claire (telling Jack afterwards "I wasn't going to let that animal anywhere near her again") in a way he didn't protect Lucy. Through the murder, he's attempting to reclaim a sense of his self-worth as a man. He also wants to prove his worth to Claire, who instead of finding him disturbing because he shot someone to death in front of her -- a early sign that the show would often write her character in broad strokes in service of others -- tells Charlie in the final scene of the episode that she wants to trust him. So, I think that's what the episode is going for, but the flashback largely feels superfluous. You don't need a whole story about Charlie conning Lucy and selling copiers to get across that he feels he’s failed at taking care of the women he loves, and that he wants to prove his worth to himself and Claire. I also agree with Billiam that killing Ethan off just after he's been captured is a ploy by the writers to avoid going into mythology they don't want to reveal and/or haven't worked out yet themselves. Also, later episodes don't really explore the ramifications of Charlie killing an “Other,” but that's a separate problem.

Over the last months discovering that I’m very into the “discussing in extreme detail whole seasons of shows in hours-long videos” genre of KZfaq videos made me so happy. Josh Holloway isn't just stupid handsome, he's also really nice. I worked on the Colony pilot for three days as an intern. I had to lift this big wooden board, maybe 6x8 feet in size and I'm a small woman. I was able to, but it was difficult and awkward. And Josh had just stopped in to talk to some of the higher ups, saw me struggling and immediately ran over to help me lift it before going back to his conversation. That was my total interaction with the man, but it was just so striking considering I never liked Sawyer since I thought he was such an asshole. The power of acting.

When I was in treatment for 9 months after trying to commit suicide when I was 16, there was this guy. His name was Knox. And he breathed, ate, and slept Lost. He had seen the entire show through like 7 times, and like, he talked about how it saved his life and how when he didn’t have anyone else to turn to, he had Lost. He even tried to make a Lost watchclub within the dorm. When I graduated in August 2017, he was obviously still there. And well, 4 years later, I hope he’s still out there, watching Lost.

I want to say that watching this made me remember how much I love Hurley and how the show treated Hurley. I'm a big dude. A lot of shows and media nowadays go out of their way to respect women who are on the larger side. Which is nice. But this typically doesn't extend to the other side so much. But Lost usually treated Hurley with respect. But they didn't baby him. People would not treat him nicely all the time despite him being so nice. But Hurley wouldn't just take it and people would stand up for him. People talked to him like a person and what he thought and did mattered on the island.
@hansmahr8627

Yeah, Hurley was a great character. At the very beginning of Lost, a lot of the characters seem like complete stereotypes. Jack, the selfless hero. Sawyer, the broody guy with a troubled past. And Hurley, the funny fat dude. But as the show starts to focus on the characters, we realize that the writers are just playing with these tropes, our impressions are superficial because we don't know these characters yet. Jack has a major dark side, Sawyer has a heart that he desperately tries to hide and Hurley has mental health issues. And of course later in the show Hurley becomes more and more important, he's not relegated to the side.

i think about that sort of stuff in survival shows all the time. A few other common weird things will be insane amounts of food on board (saw a plane crash story once where they supposedly lived for like a month off the food on a plane that crashed during a 4 hour flight with a few people on board so that plane must have had 50+ meals for each available seat), random things like tents and survival gear, or fuel aside from jet fuel. Also nobody in Hollywood seems to know that gas goes bad after a few years and if not stored correctly can easily become contaminated, so some old rusty gas cans that have been sitting in an abandoned shack is less than worthless since its useless AND toxic.

I know he is making light of the situation himself, but I just feel like the reaction nowadays would be more outrage on his behalf that he is being subjected to the stress of it all. You know, I used to disparage Damon quite a bit back in the day, but hearing what he went through, how he was basically given all these mysteries and questions and then basically just abandoned to try and answer them all on his own... The first fanfiction I ever wrote was a self-insert Lost fic, written on loose leaf paper when I was 12. My character was a werewolf that had to hide her secret from the rest of the cast throughout the show. I was insanely dedicated, it was over 40 pages long when I stopped and that only covered the first 2 seasons lol.

I never finished this show, but for the first few seasons, it was a staple in my family. Wednesday nights were Lost nights, and we had a tradition of making grilled cheese sandwiches and soup and sitting down to watch the show. It was something we were all engaged with, and I really can't think of another piece of media that managed that before or since. It will always hold a special place in my heart for that reason alone. Watching through this video really did highlight the amazing acting that was on display and for what it's worth, season one was really great, with a ton of well-developed character exploration. I have to admit, I fell into the camp that believed the writers just made a mess of things because they didn't care or just didn't have a plan, but lo and behold, I'm not shocked at all now to learn that the reason this show became such a confused mess was because of executive fuckery.

I think people really over exaggerate how many of the questions went unanswered. We literally got answers to most questions. The only big one I can even remember fizzling out was Walts powers. One of the coolest/creative ideas in the show that never gets brought up

AHHHH!! I’m so excited to talk about Walt’s powers!!! IMO, Walt has the same power set as Jacob. Walt accidentally summons birds, but when we first see Jacob, the MIB tells him that he knows he brought the approaching boat to the island. Also Walt projects himself accidentally to Shannon and sayid, and there’s hints that’s how Jacob gets off the island, using the lighthouse for help. It’s one of the ideas I’m most interested to flesh out! I know you’re just commenting but I had to get it out!!!

@@billiam How dare you respond to me lol! I wish I could contribute more because Its been like 5 years since I watched the show but I definitely agree with ya. Walt introduces a lot of the mystical elements to the show. But like you said I definitely dont think it's a coincidence that Walt exhibits the same mystical powers as Jacob even before we meet Jacob (not counting Jack's first encounter with Jacob as Christian because I dont think they knew that was Jacob at that point). From my recollection they basically realized they fucked up because Walts actor was obviously aging way faster than the character should have been which kinda put them into a corner. What do you feel Eko's purpose would've been? He's another character I think would've been super important to the mystical aspects of the show but sadly prematurely ended (pretty sure he asked to be written off the show for personal reasons). I think he would've opposed Locke similar with Jack but instead of Jack and Locke being faith vs science. It would've them disagreeing on how they interpreted the mystical aspects of the Island. Maybe even One if them being on the side of the man in black and the other being on Jacob's side. Which would've been interesting. Obviously just spitballing lol and like I said I haven't watched the show in half a decade so that could be an idiotic take lol

Okay, because of this KZfaq series, I started watching Lost and the funniest thing for those watching on Disney Plus - when you watch it with English subtitles, the Korean subtitles DON’T COME UP. So it’s taken me right up until episode 6 to even realise that Sun and Jinn’s translations weren’t happening - weird side effect is that I was totally put into the perspective of the other characters and completely relying on their tone and delivery to get an idea of what they were talking about. This show hugely contributed to my developing media literacy. I watched the first few seasons with my parents and we figured out the "puzzle box" approach to writing around the end of season 1. I regret that we didn't keep watching, but since then I became painfully aware of anything which has mysteries and answers, but always produces more of the former and less of the latter. There's definitely a way to do it.

1:31:17 I think it's important to clarify here that Eucalyptus has exhibited some relieving effects for asthma, when dry evaporated or placed in warm water (not boiling). It could potentially cause asthma to worsen or cause an asthma attack if it was burnt/put in boiling water and you breathed in the smoke, but if you got oil out of it/rubbed leaves on your skin to leave the oils behind, it could be relieving to breathe. We use it here in Australia all the time for asthma, colds, flus, anytime you're struggling to breathe it helps clear out the airways. You just have to know how to use it, like with any remedy.

Yes smoke is always bad for your breathing. This is just like how marijuana or THC VAPOR, is great for asthma as it functions as a quick and strong bronchodilator (it opens up your tubes so to speak) and smoke, while still having a bronchodilation effect due to the cannabinoids, is still fucking dangerous bc it's smoke and asthma and those things don't mix.

@@slevinchannel7589 il try (spoiler alert) The island is a magic island. Its got something to do with its position on the earth and magnetic poles as to why. The island has magic healing properties. At the very centre of the island is a cave with a river running backwards out of it. Golden light shines from the cave. The island needs an immortal protector, there can only be one and the protector must be pure of heart, but to become the new protector after the old one has been killed you must find this magic cave and drink water from it (also saying some old timey words) and the water makes you immortal, all knowing and basically god. (Fountain of youth type deal) but the one caveat is you can never ever leave the island. So the protector of the island is this woman and its like 1000BC, and she has two sons by immaculate conception. She called them Jacob and (we never learn the others name, but he becomes known as "the man in black") "The man in black" was her favourite son. He was smarter, stronger, sharper and more inquisitive, cunning etc than Jacob. At some time in the boys' youths, a shipwreck lands on the island and outsiders begin to settle. This frightens the woman (current protector of the island) and she forbids the boys from approaching the outsiders. Several years later as teenagers the boys wander far from their home and discover a small medieval town set up by these outsiders. The boys react in very different ways. Jacob is scared, doesn't want to approach and runs home to tell his mum what they found. The man in black is furious irate that his mother could tell him such lies about these dangerous people who clearly just want to survive, they laugh and sing and play with each other and he longs to join them, though he doesn't at first. Back at home it all boots off, and basically the man in black (still a young teenager) runs away to join the outsiders. Over the years he learns their ways, grows as one of them, develops a town, starts and family...all the time Jacob grows closer to his mother and becomes first in line to one day replace her as protector of the island. One day (now an adult) Jacob has an argument with his mother and runs away from the home. He comes across his brother who he hasn't seen in years, and the man in black tries to tempt him to come live in the town with him and the others. Jacob is afraid and returns to his mother and tells her what he found, again. Now the woman feels threatened by the outsiders and their attempt to pry her sons from her and she reacts. She slays them all and burns the town to the ground. Hurriedly she takes Jacob to the magic cave to turn him into a protector of the island because she knows now her son (man in black) will kill her and as a mother she couldn't bring herself to stop him. So Jacob gets turned into the new protector of the island and becomes all powerful, the man in black kills his mother in front of Jacob and throws himself into the cave in a desperate plea to gain more power than Jacob, and instead he gets turned into the smoke monster. Everything else that happens in this show, is a pointless reaction to these events as the two brothers forbidden by magical law to hurt each other, and forbidden to leave the island must spend eternity together. The man in black frequently causes nearby ships and planes to crash on the island at his will and does so seemingly for fun. These include a 14th century Spanish slave ship named the black rock, a French research boat, a sailing ship, a drug runner bi-plane etc survivors from these previous events litter the island. Sometime in WW2 a group of soldiers ate stationed on the island to recover am unexploded nuclear bomb. One of these soldiers by the name of James Witmore is manipulated buy the man in black and shown some of the magic of the island. Witmore then is groomed to lead a small cult of island survivors under the control of the man in black. He sets up a scientific research centre on the island known as the Dharma Innititive and is quickly exiled. Among other things mostly involving fertility studies, the scientists do testing on Polar Bears, hence the presence of Polar bears. The man in black spends a very long time manipulating and twisting as many people on the island as he can to kill Jacob. His ultimate goal is the kill Jacob and escape the island but he cannot do either nor even have a direct hand in the murder of Jacob..he must be killed by someone purely from their own free will, hence the long form manipulation of outsiders. Cut a very long story short he gets his wish, he manipulates one of the Dharma executives to kill Jacob and give him complete control on the island. But what he doesn't realise is that this also makes him mortal and Jack (yah the doctor) kills him. Then they make Hurley the new protector of the island and they all fuck off home (seriously) In the late seasons the island starts time travelling and they end up in the 1970s for a while. The season 5 finale is them blowing up the unexploded nuclear bomb (from before) to create a time paradox and hopefully return them to the correct timeline, but there is a risk it could split reality. The first episode of season six replays the events of the flight from season 1. But they all land, no crash, everyone gets out and goes about their day. Then we cut back to the main reality and we're back on the island, the plan worked etc etc but The entire way through season 6 we are seeing an alternate off island reality play out, so as viewers we are too assume they did split reality after all. In this alternate reality all the guys meet up with each other by pure chance then all start remembering the island one by one. The big last episode end of it all reveal FOR THE ENTIRE SHOW is this "alternate reality" is actually purgatory and these people all waited for each other before crossing the boarder into the afterlife because they're all happy together. The end.

Lol it's been 12 years since I watched Lost. Memories are a bit fuzzy. I was an extremely dedicated fan however, and mostly I remember disappointment in how the show ended. Also I seem to recall (spoiler alert) that the writers fervently denied that the island represented purgatory, as that was one of the first theories to be presented when the show started. They always made the fans feel like there was some grand plan. By the end of the series, guess what, the island was purgatory. Also it became obvious that the show runners were laying tracks in front of a speeding train and did not know where it was going. I did not like the feeling of being lied to. They built up so much lore and mystery and I felt at the time that most of it was wasted in the end. But, again, it's been 12 years since I watched the finale, so time has clouded my specific gripes about it. I still have a nostalgic fondness for Lost. The character development and suspenseful writing was and is still unmatched in television.
