What I appreciate in these videos is the understandable use of body language. It's easy to follow throughout the restoration process. Besides that, learning about Super Blue, rivets, and rust remover. Outstanding.

Filing down the nut in order to use weird spanners is a bit strange. 🤣 just use a normal 12 or 13mm Also, would be a nicer contrast to have a dark blade with the wire wrapped handle. How did you terminate the wire at the pommel end? Love the smooth/twist alternating wrap, looks great.

That knife is ruined. Metal softens at high temps after tempering. That blade will snap at the first application of pressure. It had to be retempered, he didn't do that. You can see actual stress fracturing and scaling from the high temps at 4:44.

Few things, I get your videos are your artist expression and I appreciate that. From a time saving and efficiency perspective I would go with either a wire wheel or rust remover/vinegar over night. Not both and definitely not a wire brush to start would just take more time she. The other methods are pretty gentle in their own right. Files are made to cut in only one direction. Abrasive paper will cut in all directions, well except the paper backing...

Rehardened and retempered indeed, if it gotten above 400 degrees its temper is destroyed and you have a soft knife edge, which can still be sharp but wont stay that for long after a bit of use though.

great knife love the handle especially. I do have a question about how hot the fire might have gotten. I mean it doesnt look like the handle was burnt in too hot of a blaze but do you have any concern that the temper of the blade might have taken a hit? I do know that some house fires can reach pretty damn hot temps. so if this went over 450 or so..for any length of time. wouldnt you have needed to re heat treat?

The pommel and wood were most of a days work. Wrapping the handle took a long afternoon- probably 3-4 hours, It looks quick and easy on camera, but keeping the wire straight and under tension was quite a chore.

um hear is the thing , in the vast majority of cases the fire will draw the temper of the knife blade making it not hold an edge well, and re heat treating it in the vast majority of cases will require a way to not just make it hot but at specific temperatures ( think 540C not 555C or 520 C ) followed by tempering with similar requirements for exact temp control oit will not hold its edge

so you have a knife with a chopping style blade, with a sloping handle with nothing on the back to stop your hand from slipping right off when you chop into something, really smart here. *insert massive irony here* .. you should have just left the handle as it was, maybe with some wire diamond insets instead for grip, and made the back of the handle wider, but hey, im not a restorer, i just follow the laws of logic instead of my own ludicrous ideas on what might look fancy instead of functional.
