It was a huge conversation point I remember at the time when they released Lockdown in S2. Effectively we know Radzinsky was a control freak and after the incident took it upon himself to stay at the Swan. At some point, probably after the Purge he lost contact with Dharma and the outside (as they were all dead) and therefore went through a period of time similar to Desmond being alone. Waking up every 108 minutes etc etc. He probably drew the map up just to keep himself sane.

Another detailed and insightful video! Re: why the Others did not interfere with the Swan, one thing that may be worth considering is that some of them, or at least Richard, knew that certain individuals were destined to come to the island and ultimately time hop, and that the island was predictably safe at least until those events played out, and that perhaps the Swan itself may have a role to play in those events. I like to wonder how much Richard, Eloise and Widmore kept to themselves regarding their encounters with the time travelers and how much they revealed to the other Others.

I could watch these videos all day. This is some of the best analysis of Lost I've ever heard (just watched the show for the fifth time last year). I've always wondered about what caused the lockdown. Charlie's comment definitely seems to be the writers planting their explanation in the episode, but you're right that it doesn't make a lot of sense (at least the part about concealing the source of the supply drop from the occupants--why would that be necessary?). It seems to me this idea fits in with the possibility that the Swan is one large psychological experiment, something the viewers were meant to consider as the question of whether pushing the button was real was not to be answered for certain until the finale (hence the vaccines and the cameras and the "quarantine" signs and the Pearl itself--all of this was feeding the idea of "the button isn't real, the people in the Swan are being manipulated"). I know explaining things as plot tricks is not as interesting as diving deep into the lore, but that's how I always saw it. It seems that even Dharma wanted certain members (the Pearl station occupants) to think the Swan activities were all pointless. A lot of Season 2 is about making the viewer think what's going on in the Swan is a psychological experiment and the lockdown keeping the Swan occupants from being outside during the supply drops is part of it. I like your explanation better, though.
@buddystewart2020

I like both of your theories. The first seems more plausible. I had always thought it was a safety precaution, i.e., keep the men in the hatch during the drop to reduce the chance they would be outside and injured by the drop. That's probably not super likely, as it would have to drop slow enough to prevent destroying the supplies during the drop so, a person outside should be able to observe it and stay out of it's way. Plus, what's to prevent one of them from remaining outside the blast doors anyway. So I like the idea of keeping one guy safe while the other moves supplies inside the station.

Loved Lost. It fascinated me so much. One thing that always had me wondering was the Swan Station. Firstly, why did they have to type in the numbers to keep the electromagnetism at bay? Surely they could have come up with an automated way of doing it rather than having to enter a code into a computer? Or they could have just filled the whole station with cement after the incident. Secondly, when the numbers weren't entered in the season 2 finale, and Desmond used the failsafe key, what did that actually do? Implode the station? How did they all just wake up in the grass safely? Why didn't Dharma just do this in the first place so they wouldn't have had to have someone pushing the button? Love the channel by the way, great work.

Why would Radzinksky need to create the blast door map in the first place, if he already had prior knowledge of all the Dharma stations and their whereabouts and functions on the island? Would he not have had access to Dharma maps as a higher up in their ranks?

Thanks for another great video! The map on the blast door, which Kelvin was meticulously painting, is evidence that the lockdowns had been taking place for some time, yes?
@LOSTEXPLAINED108
@LOSTEXPLAINED108 Жыл бұрын
Well, we see Kelvin show Desmond how to fake a lockdown in order to continue painting Radzinsky's invisible map in the Season Two finale. Kelvin says Radzinsky taught him how to do this (both forcing a lockdown and adding to the map). Which means they were triggering lockdowns intentionally themselves for years to carry on the project. The actual lockdowns that are triggered by pallet resupply drops appear to happen only a few times a year, in either quarterly deliveries or one every six months. And these normal lockdowns only appear to last for a short period of time -- approximately an hour. What we see Kelvin doing is intentionally triggering the blast doors to drop for as long as he needs them to be down. So, yes, the automated lockdowns did occur for years and years, but the map painting seems to have been done during self-triggered lockdowns.

Lol, or they would be horrified at how badly I've misinterpreted their story?! I know I'm sometimes filling in blanks with creative theory crafting and plugging some gaps in the plot, but I like to believe that I'm not just using head canon to explain the show. It's a big narrative with many threads and moving parts and some inconsistencies. But as long as it makes sense and I'm not contradicting what was presented then I think the truth really does reside in my explanations somewhere. But that's for viewers such as yourself to decide :-)

Really great stuff. My question after watching this is why the blast doors came back up when they did. It seemed to coincide with Ben pushing the button. Also, after the incident, wouldn’t Pierre have told everyone that those people were NOT the others infiltrating them? I guess the paranoia would have likely remained anyway
@LOSTEXPLAINED108
@LOSTEXPLAINED108 Жыл бұрын
The blast doors came back up, presumably, because the doors were on a timer that would automatically timeout after a set period (for example: an hour to allow one of the hatch men to make the supply retrieval while the other mans the computer). But it's possible that the computer button being pushed within the lockdown time window reset the whole system in The Swan, because the button was pushed a little bit late (we hear the the reactor powering up). I think Pierre Chang might have told a select group of higher-ups that there had been time travellers among them, but whether or not the DHARMA management believed him is another story. Jack's group seemed closely aligned with The Hostiles by the end, and behaved much like Hostiles would. I'm sure Radzinsky always thought they were filthy infiltrators lol.

Love the videos and this channel. I binged all videos in the past year posted on this channel. For the first time, there’s something that I don’t entirely agree with this author: I think Ben was caught by his own choice and he purposefully went to Russel’s trap and get caught. I explore this very question in my video on Henry Gale. You might have already seen it but I put forward the full argument about why he was caught unintentionally there. There is no way he could have known that Rousseau would have handed him over to our Losties. As far as he was concerned, Rousseau would have simply tortured and killed him upon capture. Hi friend. Another excellent video, and, as per usual, I can happily agree with at least 90% of it. My one reservation remains the Swan Station, and specifically what Ben and the Others truly knew of it. We don't know when Radzinsky killed himself, but we do know that Kelvin spent the subsequent period of time manning the station alone until Desmond's arrival, and we also know that Kelvin was in the habit of leaving the Station (otherwise he would never have found Desmond). It seems incredible to me that Ben would allow the Swan to be managed in this way if he truly understood the critical nature of its true purpose. It constituted a massive risk. What if Kelvin had fallen and badly injured himself out there during the time he was alone? And if it was a simple matter of Ben not wanting to start a firefight with Kelvin by attempting a forced entry, surely they could have monitored him from the Pearl and chosen a time while he was away from the Station to gain entry? Or they could simply have ambushed him as he left the building. It makes me wonder if perhaps Ben had swallowed the line from the Pearl orientation video stating that the occupants of the Swan only thought that they were doing something important? It's clear from the scene when Ben was locked in the Armoury and the lockdown protocol started, that he had no idea what was happening. You could see the confusion, and even fear, on his face, and since nobody else could see him at that moment it obviously wasn't an act. However, asserting that Ben and the Others didn't know the true purpose of the Swan also raises its own questions, the main one being "why not?", so perhaps the truth will have to remain unknown, and subject to a "best guess", as either scenario has obvious issues.
@LOSTEXPLAINED108
@LOSTEXPLAINED108 Жыл бұрын
There is a lot to cover here! I'll try to be as to the point as I can be, but I strongly disagree with everything you just said lol. To me, the only side of the debate with irreconcilable issues is: “The Others didn’t know about the button or the true purpose of The Swan.” And I shall detail why that is the case here… First of all, we have to acknowledge that Ben was a member of DHARMA for two decades and a double agent for almost just as long, and then island leader for over a decade. That's 30 whole years. The idea that he did not know the purpose of The Swan in all of that time is extremely implausible. He had access to the collective knowledge of Richard Alpert and The Others *and* many of the DHARMA protocols for the various stations. We see how au fait he is with somewhere like The Orchid, for example. This guy knows what DHARMA were about, what they did and why they did it. We also know that The Others understand there is great and powerful energy beneath The Island. One could argue that protecting The Island (and its energy resources) was one of their original founding purposes. They have designated specific sectors of The Island as "off-limits" to DHARMA for this reason. They also know that DHARMA ends up betraying the truce by trying to drill the earth to reach the energy. And they know this led to an incident on The Island in 1977 that caused the evacuation of personnel. These things add up. But, if that weren’t enough to convince you with island history alone, here’s the kicker: They had Daniel Faraday's journal. Which means they would have details about the incident, The Swan and some of its functionality. Remember, that journal contained ALL of Faraday’s research on DHARMA. He even had the exact times of when things were going to go critical at The Swan site in 1977, right down to Pierre Chang’s movements. So, it’s paramount that The Others know about The Swan's purpose based on all of these factors. And if The Others in 1977 knew all of this info then that means Ben will come to know this info too, whether that be before or after he ascends to the leadership. Even Juliet, their fertility specialist, knows that Desmond was down there pushing a button every 108 minutes to save the world. She says this to Miles in Season Five in matter-of-fact terms. We literally see both her and Ben using The Pearl to watch the camera feeds in The Swan in 'Expose'. Clearly, this is not the first time Ben ever watched what was going on in the hatch, as evidenced by Ben’s immediate understanding of how to work the monitors, right down to which specific monitor to go to and turn on. '?' further demonstrates that The Others had been keeping an eye on the station and its residents for some time, as evidenced by the cigarettes and build-up of gum on the viewing table. It's reasonable to speculate that Radzinsky had negotiated some kind of new truce with Widmore to spare the lives of button men. How do we know this? Because of the pallet drops. After all, why would Widmore (and later Ben) allow the resupply drops to continue dropping payloads years after the fact? We see that The Others had control of all DHARMA apparatus by 2004, including the supply warehouse in Guam. Ben even cuts the workers severance cheques. The Others kept paying these guys long after DHARMA management was gone and buried (if you’ll pardon the pun!). And we know the pallet's primary purpose is to feed the men in the hatch, right? Judging by their well-stocked pantry that had not been depleted (even after a decade of the purge of DHARMA). The Kelvin/Radzinsky timeline is very muddy so we have to theory craft. We don't know if Kelvin ever had contact with The Others or if he was aware of the truce between button men and hostiles. My video on "The Purge" speculates that The Others (masquerading as DHARMA) might have been the ones to recruit him in the first place. To make sure Radzinsky always had a partner down there. That, and the pallet drops, formed their end of the agreement. So, it’s possible that Kelvin might very well have been waiting for his new partner and replacement from The Others/DHARMA to come assist him and/or relieve him, just as Radzinsky had. In fact, we know Kelvin was waiting on someone, as he asks Desmond that very question: “Are you him?” Basically, it's hard to use Kelvin's solitude after Radzinsky's suicide as a counterpoint to the video in this way. We simply don't know what the agreement was or how much Kelvin knew, although he does demonstrate that he knows a lot more than Desmond ever did. Speaking to your point on a lack of potential plans to "get Kelvin"... Maybe they had tried before. We don't know. Kelvin carries a gun with him at all times, right? He's paranoid and is fully aware of "hostiles". Who is to say that there wasn't a confrontation at some point? Could The Others have jumped Kelvin in the jungle and taken control of The Swan? Maybe. But again, we don't know the timeline. Supply drops are twice a year (according to Carlton Cuse in Access Granted) and we don't know how long Kelvin was alone down there for, or if anyone was watching him during that time. Between Radzinsky's suicide and Desmond's arrival, it might have only been a matter of weeks or months. And maybe the first time Kelvin had come up top in all of that time was the day Desmond washed ashore. Someone would need to have been watching him 24/7 in order to orchestrate such an ambush. Essentially, what I’m saying here is that there are *many ways* to explain why The Others didn't have control of The Swan after Radzinsky’s death. Without an exact timeline of events during those lost years in The Swan between '92 and '04 we simply have to assume a lot. I think the biggest thing I want to counter from your comment is about Ben's reactions in The Swan. Ben didn't know what was going on when the lockdown took place because he had never been down there before. Since its construction completed in the late 70s, it's unlikely that Ben ever set foot in The Swan until the day Sayid brought him in. Radzinsky probably ran that place like a fortress. So, Ben doesn't know all the ins and outs and quirks of the place like he would with, say, The Pearl or The Flame or The Orchid. All he knows is that the work being done down there almost destroyed The Island once upon a time. Otherwise, he would never have pushed the button in 'Lockdown'. Think about why he pushed the button if he believed it was fake. Or if he didn’t know what it did. He claimed to Locke that he did nothing to see what happened... so why didn't he actually do that? Because we know *he did push the button* since the timer resets and the world doesn’t end lol. That's the crux of this whole debate really. He had no reason to push it if he didn't think it was real. Yet he pushed it because he *knew* it had to be pushed. He just didn't want Locke to be reaffirmed in his beliefs. You also claim that Ben might have been fooled by The Pearl station orientation and, as a result, came to believe that it was all a psychological experiment. Let's play that one out a bit. Do you think that Ben and his people never came upon the giant pneumatic tube dump with all of those journals in the middle of The Island? I mean, The Others set their ambush up right by it in the Season Two finale. Which means they know about that spot, and have surely picked through some of the debris there. Based on that alone, surely it would be apparent to The Others that the psychological experiment was being carried out on the men in The Pearl and not The Swan. Considering how much history and experience The Others have with the energy beneath The Island and these various events, why would Ben (or any of them) believe that the work in The Swan was not real? So, it is for these reasons (and some others too long to delve into in an already long response!) that I reject the notion that The Others (and specifically Ben) were ignorant to the workings of The Swan. It doesn’t add up at all. Whereas the questions raised from them having knowledge of the button have plenty of logical outs. We get scenes and dialogue and implications that reaffirm what I discuss in the video, at least in terms of how much Ben/The Others knew and understood. Phew! Sorry, didn't know I would write so much on this subject! Thanks for your thoughts, as always.

@@LOSTEXPLAINED108 - LOL - thanks for the long answer. I'm always grateful for your time. My problem is, no matter how hard I try, I cannot reconcile Ben knowing the importance of the Swan with the casual way that he left one man in charge (first Kelvin for an indeterminate length of time, then Desmond in 2004 for weeks from the day of the 815 crash). One man only, and never getting anything approaching a good night's sleep, and so much potential for things to go catastrophically wrong. And surely the Others would've been very wary of the survivors breaking into, and potentially taking over, the Swan, and perhaps not following the 108 minute protocol? I accept that most of the surrounding facts, as carefully laid out by you, point in the direction of Ben knowing the Swan's importance, but I simply can't square that with his complete non-interference in its running.

Yeah, really sorry for the length. I don't often set out to write that much in a comment, but your questions deserved a thorough response. As I said, we don't know several things about the pre-2004 Swan timeline. Ben might very well have tried to take back control of The Swan in the past and failed. I suggest the possibility in another video that Mikhail could have worked in the hatch pre-Kelvin as a plant, hence why his glass eye ends up in a box of Swan storage items in The Staff. We never see these things of course but that doesn't mean there weren't skirmishes or conflicts or takeover plans pre-2004. There's a whole lot of missing history we can fill in ourselves. We also don't know how long Kelvin was alone for and whether anyone was watching at that time and knew that he was alone. Kelvin might only have been solitary for a matter of weeks after Radzinsky's suicide. And even if Ben did know he was alone down there, unless he is going up top for walkabouts then there is no way they could get to him anyway. He's dug in. Same goes for Desmond too actually. And, as I explain in the video, The Others were too distracted by what was going on with the crash of 815 to pay attention to what was happening down in The Swan. That was the biggest thing happening on The Island at the time. They might not have even known Kelvin was dead and gone until our Losties actually blew open the hatch. Also, there is a simple explanation available that cuts out all of this speculation that I mention in the video as well... Jacob told them to stay away from The Swan. Boom. Done deal. The point is: there are explanations to explain away these issues you mention, whereas it's almost impossible to explain away a scenario in which The Others didn't know about the station. Because too much in-show evidence says that they did.

@@LOSTEXPLAINED108 - absolutely no problem with the length of your post, and I'm always happy to read every word. As I stated near the beginning of my first post, I have "reservations" about how much Ben knew about the Swan, rather than out-and-out asserting that he knew nothing of its importance, so it's not so much a question of disagreeing with you, but more of raising the issues that don't make sense for me. I don't think that you or me, effectively placed in charge of an Island, and knowing that there was a critical facility on the Island, would happily leave the operation of that facility to two strangers. I take note of your hypothetical scenarios that may explain Ben's attitude, but it's just an aspect of the show that will never add up for me, I'm afraid.

That's fair enough. I don't have those same reservations about this part of the story personally. For me, due to the location and inaccessibility of The Swan, and the temperamental staff down there, and any post-purge agreements struck, it makes sense as to why The Others left the hatch men alone to do their work. Because you're watching videos out of sequence, it means you're going to be getting a weird mix of old videos and new videos. Basically, I started the channel on a whim during the pandemic but used a text-to-speech voice and lower resolution clips because I didn't have recording equipment or better editing software. When the channel took off, people asked me to use my real voice and so I invested in the equipment and improved the quality control over the videos. For the past year and a half I've been making videos with my own voice and named the new and improved series Frequently Asked Questions about LOST. In the process of doing this, I also decided to remake all of the old text-to-speech videos, rewriting them, re-recording them, and creating new bumper sized videos called 'The Theory of Everything' (which currently runs at five parts, with one more part left to be released). I recommend that you jump to watching them instead of the piecemeal older videos as I cover all of the same subject matter only in much greater depth and detail. There will come a day when I delete the old videos altogether as I was never all that happy with how they turned out. To me, the channel doesn't really begin until my voice reveal video onwards.

Back when the show was still on the air, i had a dream that the beach camp was swarmed by a flock of Hurley birds, in an Alfred Hitchcock kinda way. It was awesome, and I'm disappointed we didn't get to see this happen. Speaking of which, you gonna talk more about the significance of the Hurley bird? It appears only twice not including the scene from the epilogue, but i also think it's screams can be heard in other episodes, including the scene before the smoke monster attacks in Exodus when it grabs Locke. Also, if you watch the season 1 episode where it appears with subtitles turned on, i think it's confirmed it actually does say Hurley, which is an odd thing to include considering this was apparently not the creators intention. I wonder how that happened?

Cool dream! I've had a few LOST-adjacent dreams over the years too. I don't plan to make a video exclusively on the Hurley bird. The Epilogue essentially ties off any mystery surrounding it -- it was a weird DHARMA experiment in genetic engineering. And I think the bird's general caw-sound just happens to sound a little bit like "Hurley". It kind of became a gag. Although we could argue that at least one of the appearances of the bird could have been Smokey in disguise, just to spice things up a bit!

John doesn't insert the code into the computer in time and after the countdown reaches 0, we see those red "icons" (I remember a pengiun at the end and some strange characters) for the first time. So, for me, that triggered the lockdown although not right away. There's something that must have happened between that and the lockdown itself that also triggered the doors shutting down.

The writers also said in the very same Access Granted featurette that the appearances of Walt to Shannon and to Locke were both Walt using his psychic abilities, whereas 12 years later Damon Lindelof recently said in an interview that Walt's appearances were smoke monster-related. Even though he had previously given credence to the idea in the Official Podcast that the monster could only appear as dead people. So, we have to take some of these "out-of-show" answers from the creators over the years with a pinch of salt. I'm using the in-show evidence and some deductive logic to make the most sense out of plot points like this. To me, it makes no sense that Walt made those communications, but makes total sense that they came from The Others.

This is finally explained in the series epilogue 'The New Man in Charge'. Have you ever seen it? Basically, the pallets are loaded by two warehouse workers out in Guam then flown out to the island by unmanned aerial vehicles that use automated flight routes generated by The Lamp Post station. How did the supply drops work? Do we have any idea how the drones would or may have looked, did they have automated drone technology in the 70’s?
@LOSTEXPLAINED108
@LOSTEXPLAINED108 Жыл бұрын
The supply drops probably didn't become automated until the latter days of DHARMA, or possibly even after the purge. There would have been no need to automate the process back in the 70s since DHARMA were still an active concern on the island and could receive supply drops by air or by sea. I don't think this kind of drone technology existed back then anyway. I'm not well versed in the history of UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) but a quick Google claims that they did start to become used by various military forces in the 80s (Israel) and 90s (USA), with the technology becoming more advanced by the 2000s. The series epilogue 'The New Man in Charge' states that the workers in the DHARMA supply warehouse in Guam have been using UAVs to send resupply drops to The Island for 20 years. The epilogue is taking place in the year 2010. So, that would place the inception point for using the drones around 1990.

Why Ben putted metal in the Time Machine before turning the wheel?
@LOSTEXPLAINED108
@LOSTEXPLAINED108 9 ай бұрын
Because he wanted to access the cave system behind the chamber. The cave system is what led to the frozen wheel. Basically, DHARMA built the exotic matter chamber above the wheel and the energy pocket, so the only way to get to the other side of the chamber was to blow a hole in it. It's the same logic as putting metal objects inside a microwave and turning it on... it creates a build-up of electromagnetic energy that can cause overload. In this case, it causes an explosion.

Yeah, I'm still struggling to grasp this concept: If turning the wheel causes the island to physically shift, and the island vanished from the view of outside observers, then why did the Losties become unstuck in time? Juliet knowing about the computer that saved the world. Althought I fully agree with your first chapter here, this information could've easily come out of many other castaways. From the time Jack spent with the Others in season 3 all the way up to that scene in season 5. There is also the theory - which I may or may not agree with, unsure about it - is that the Others knew well enough about the Swan station, but just like Locke and Boone - never found the very visible entrance :P I also like the explanation of Jacob's instruction. > Walt and the computer I've laid my theories about this on my own channel, but yeah, there's various interpretations on it and if we take the showrunners word for it on the "Access: Granted" bonus feature - it WAS Walt who communicated, but he might not have needed a computer. (I thought it was a bit weird you included one part of this, about the lockdown, but not this one). Anyway, we've talked about this before and I know you prefer to look strictly into the show, separating the art from the artist. I agree with you that he couldn't have used a computer. Not even on Hydra Island, since the blast door map says that there is no intranet access here. Which I agree with. Laying videofeed cables all the way from the main island over there is an unnecessary task in my opinion. One reason why Hydra Island had its separate surveillance room just for that island. So there's various interpretations of it. Another theory is that the first conversation between Walt and Michael really happened, but the rest were Others. The only thing that irks with the Pearl being the source of the communication is that Walt's second conversation with Michael happens when Eko and Charlie are at the beechcraft, nestled above the Pearl. Although the Others might've left the beechcraft just before Eko and Charlie got there. 17:04 - Just FYI, that's a fan-made map of the Swan which has plain wrong layout. :P Lockdown: We pretty much 100% agree on that one. Haven't considered the remote access of the lockdown. Fascinating idea!

It would be fair to say that Juliet’s line on its own isn’t necessarily proof that The Others knew what was going on down in the hatch. But there is supporting evidence that goes beyond Juliet’s dialogue. Her line is more like a final confirmation. Had we only ever gotten that one moment with Juliet then I’d say one could maybe interpret that she came by this information elsewhere; that someone told her this weird nugget about what happened before she rocked up on their beach. Athough it certainly did not come from Jack. He never believed that Desmond was saving the world and would not have phrased it to her that way. And I find it hard to believe anyone else would have taken the time out to explain The Swan to her other than Jack. By the time anyone kind-of trusts her enough to tell her anything like that - I’d argue around halfway through S4 - events start moving at a clip. There’s no time nor context for her to learn that info. In any case, Juliet’s line is just the cherry on top really rather than the cake itself. If you know what I mean 😆 As for Access Granted and Walt being at the other end of the computer… in a video coming up in the near future, I tackle some of the contrary statements Darlton gave on things like this, especially anything in regards to Walt. If one were to be an absolute purist about how we form answers/solutions then whatever Darlton have gone on record as saying about these topics is gospel. Even if it is contradicted by them years later or within the show itself. But for me, as an explanation it fails the logic smell test and doesn’t line up at all with what we learn later. So I disregard tidbits like that. In the same Access Granted selection from the DVD special features, they also appear to suggest that Walt is Walt when appearing to Shannon, yet other statements exist in which Lindelof implies otherwise and a smoke monster connection. Even though they also confirm that Smokey can only become dead people both in the exposition of the actual show and on the final season podcast. I’ll actually be diving into that in a few videos time! I guess my counterpoint here really comes down to the fact that Walt’s story suffered from a lot of ambivalence in the writersroom and I think they never quite figured out what they wanted to do with him and his powers. In regards to external computer comms and remote access to The Swan… this could have come from The Flame rather than at The Pearl. We know that they are all connected together and that the computers can talk to one another. Mikhail could just have easily been talking to Michael from there. As for The Swan map, got to admit that I didn’t really look that closely at it! It was the only clear still image for a Swan blueprint that I could find and is only there to illustrate a point about construction rather than to be an accurate representation. I’ve used fan made maps of the island in the same way. I’ll leave the map making to you 😉 That’s your speciality more than it is mine lol.

Especially with confirmations that happen during the show's run. Like, what would happen if they got a better idea and replaced the idea they had talked about in an interview or a podcast? Writing the show is something that was constantly evolving with new ideas scattered around the writers room. By the way, I love your reasoning for them not taking Kate, Sawyer and Jack in "The Hunting Party". Couldn’t have been Sawyer telling Juliet the story during DHARMA times as Juliet says this line in the Season Five premiere ‘Because You Left’ just as the time skipping is really getting started, and quite some time before they end up in the DHARMA era. I think the line was given to her - rather than one of the other castaways - as a way to demonstrate that even The Others knew what the deal was with The Swan. According to Javier Grillo-Marxuach, who wrote for the first two seasons, the rule in the writersroom during his time there was just that: if someone had a better idea for an answer then they would override the current one. I can totally see this as having happened with things like Walt and the smoke monster. We know they definitely retconned multiple mythological touchstones such as the purge and the sickness, and even the nature of Jacob and the cabin. I can’t really use any of their info about the cabin from their Season Three commentaries and interviews and podcasts because they had clearly not finalised the whole Jacob/MiB arc and had a different intent behind that scene when originally written and shot. Which is why it becomes increasingly difficult to rely upon old interviews like this, even though they said some really juicy and interesting stuff in them. We can certainly better understand their process and how the mythology evolved. I’m always conflicted as to whether or not to use their quotes. I try to limit them to supporting my points that I feel need a little help to get across to the viewer. But, like you say, it’s a tough issue.

Sometimes I do think answers they gave outside of the show don't make sense or contradict in-show evidence. The writers are not infallible gods of the world they have created. They made mistakes. They changed their minds about the meaning of a mystery or event later. Sometimes those changes made things better, sometimes they made them worse. I'm literally releasing a two-part video (part one is already up, part two will drop later today) about these very issues. There is a reason why they later said: "We want the show to speak for itself". In other words: trust the tale, not the teller. They want people to interpret events in the show based on what is in the actual show, not some quotes they made on a DVD extra for Season Three. And that opens up plenty of points for debate within the fanbase. My explanations always try to stay rooted to the established narrative plot points (or to make logical deductions), but I will also discuss what the writers have said on a contentious/ambiguous subject where applicable, whether it validates my own interpretations or not. There are plenty of instances of the writers saying contrary things, especially in the early seasons. And there's nothing wrong with going against quotes they made in 2007 before the show finished airing and before all was said and done.

They also have a washing machine that Hurley points out as being relatively new compared to other technology down there. So, our attention is drawn to that purposefully. The implications from the Epilogue is that the men in the hatch (during Radzinsky’s tenure) were spared from the purge as long as they kept pressing the button. The Others took over DHARMA operations on and off the island and allowed the supply drops to continue in order to replenish the personnel in The Swan, and this most likely included updating defunct machinery.

@@LOSTEXPLAINED108 Oh I missed the part where Hurley pointed it out actually. I just happened to see it first in that wide shot. It is at least a Samsung, but I still think its a grey area because I think so something like that would have had to be requested by a supply drop at the Flame. Moving it into the Swan, possibly having damaged parts from the deceleration from the drogue or a hard landing, putting unexpected loads on the power system from Present day motor drives, pipe fittings because corroded. I think it would have had to take some back and forth with even Radsinki knowing everything about the station (if he was still alive in 2005). Every production has to have product placements, but I think they took too much of a risk with that one. I think in an ideal world they would have used a Japanese style combo unit, and that would be much harder for people to untangle the lore. Kudos to you for replying, I think you did a damn good job on the Electromagnet part specifically. It would make sense that DharmaTel could communicate to the Apple II, it being used as a terminal to communicate with the 70s era microcontrollers or PICs. It looked like the Pearl also received confirmation every-time the numbers were accepted, so it would make sense they could type them remotely at the Flame (or maybe the Pearl). This production had fantastic producers, maybe second to only Futurama. Again, no offense intended, I am glad I got a real response.

The pallet drops were made by unmanned drones, as confirmed in the series epilogue: 'The New Man in Charge'. Although it's possible that back in the 80s when the lockdown procedure was first implemented, it was more likely helicopters making those drops. But why would it matter whether or not these hatch men -- who are already deep underground -- see the unmanned drones deliver the payloads? And if they didn't want the hatch men underground to see these drops take place then why does the lockdown come with an advanced warning that gives the hatch men plenty of time to split up so one can stay with the computer and the other can go up top? Doesn't make sense to give them that heads-up if it didn't want them to know about an incoming resupply drop.

@@LOSTEXPLAINED108 i know sir but still there are many theorys (that you describe in the video). I think dont think even writters really knew how it worked. But i do think like you that it was a defensivd system to continue pressing the botton (even do a person cant be in lockdown for ever without dying of no eating) (eventusly thr person inside was going to get caught)

I thought Ben got captured and brought to the hatch on purpose though? Surely he wouldn't just be randomly walking in the jungle by himself and accidentally got captured?

Excellent analysis, however I actually think Ben was captured deliberately. For one thing, I Just don't buy that he wandered close to the camp for seemingly no reason and got caught in a net. As to why, there are a couple of reasons. Firstly, to closely watch and manipulate the main characters and figure out how to manipulate them. And secondly, because Ben wanted the hatch destroyed, because it's what caused the fertility problems that he was obsessed with. So he sets specific events in motion that lead to the eventual destruction. He takes advantage of the lockdown and Locke's situation. He showed Locke the invisible map that led him to the Pearl. And he planted the seed of doubt by lying about pressing the button. Obviously, this was a great risk, but I think he was confident in the outcome. And we know he is a risk taker. And he always intended to be set free by Michael. Remember, he didn't get caught until after Michael was captured and we know he intended to use Michael to capture Jack, Kate and Sawyer. As to why he had to be the one to be captured, as opposed to sending one of his people.. Well, his people had suffered many losses already, which caused them to change their plans and keep their distance from the survivors. And more simply, Ben is very hands-on with his schemes. He himself needed to get close to the survivors in order to figure them out and manipulate them. He needed to personally set the destruction of the hatch in motion. And I think he kept his plan to destroy the hatch secret from his people because they would not approve. Richard infers that they don't share Ben's fixation on the fertility problems. And they simply wouldn't be happy with such a dangerous plan. We know that Ben keeps things from the others and that he can't Just do anything he wants. The others didn't seem to know what caused the 'anomaly' and they all looked surprised on the dock, except for Ben.

@@LOSTEXPLAINED108 If he wasn't caught on purpose, then he at least used his capture to his full advantage. I still think he wanted the hatch and the energy pocket destroyed. There was no other reason for him to lie about pressing the button and leading Locke to the Pearl station.

I agree that he used his capture to his advantage, at least in terms of manipulating people and sewing discord down there. But it was all improvisation on his part, not part of a grand plan. If anything, the actual plan to nab Jack for the surgery had been scuppered by his capture. The Others had to improvise and send in Michael to bust Ben out. Anyway, speaking to your broader point on why Ben lied about the button... We know that letting the timer run down and to not push the button wouldn't just destroy The Swan, it would destroy the island and everyone on it. Remember, the only way for the pocket to be destroyed without destroying the island (or killing everyone) is with the fail-safe key, which no one down there knew about nor where to find it, or even that there was a fail-safe to begin with. So, Ben's lie doesn't make sense in that context. He would have to hope that Locke would know to turn the key. And there are far easier ways of going about that accomplishing that specific goal. However, I argue that it does make sense that Ben would lie to Locke about the button to undermine his self-confidence and faith, and to create doubt. We see him do this throughout the series, especially to Locke. Ben is threatened by Locke from the start and tries to unpick the man thread-by-thread. I don't think he had a goal with that lie beyond messing with Locke. He knew they had a team of people pushing the button, with or without Locke, so it wasn't that big of a risk to needle the man of faith's own faith in the button. Not sure what you mean about Ben leading Locke to The Pearl? The lockdown was out of Ben's hands. It was most likely triggered remotely (although we could play with the theory that The Others were behind it). Either way, Ben couldn't have known that Locke would get trapped underneath the door and would see Radzinsky's map for the brief ten seconds that it appears under blacklight. Locke isn't actually compelled to seek out The Pearl based off of that glimpse anyway. It takes Eko having a dream to move that chain of events forward. Ben has no involvement in that part of things.

@@LOSTEXPLAINED108 What I meant about leading him to the Pearl was when the map actually shows up. It's never confirmed why the lights all go out and the map is shown. It's not part of the lockdown procedure because it didn't happen when the blast doors initially came down. It seems like Ben made it happen. Yeah he couldn't have known Locke would get caught under the blast door beforehand, but since that's what happened, he took advantage.

But why would he do this? Okay, say Ben did somehow actually turn on the blacklight intentionally, a lot of things have to play out exactly right for this manipulation to work. Firstly, how could Ben anticipate that Locke would even catch what he wanted him to catch? And even if Ben knew that Locke would zero in on the question mark and become obsessed with its meaning (which is already big leap to take), there is no way he could predict that Locke would physically pursue its location on the island, never mind actually find it. And The Pearl was not only hidden under salted earth but it was also now buried beneath the beechcraft wreckage. Ben would have to hope that Locke would somehow find its location, and then hope that he watches the orientation video and that Locke would be fooled into thinking that The Swan was a psychological experiment. Then Ben would further need to hope that Locke would figure out how to destroy the station with the fail-safe key without killing everyone in the process. That's a lot of assumptions on Ben's parts, to the point of implausibility for me. Ben stating that he never pushed the button did all the damage needed to Locke's confidence and faith. He didn't need the man to go through an elaborate series of events that hinged upon unlikely assumptions and coincidences. I don't think Ben planned for anyone to find The Pearl full-stop. He even tells Juliet to get Tom to cover the entrance back up with the beechcraft after they leave in the 'Expose' flashback. Ben was a master manipulator and a great improvisor, but he wasn't an ingenious master chess player who could see twelve moves ahead and guess what people would do based on crumbs of information given. His plans frequently and regularly went wrong. I don't think any of his long-term strategies ever actually worked out.

The narrator sounds too much like a text to speech AI which is very grating to me. It drives me crazy listening to the lack of emotion. I would keep listening to these videos if I knew this was a real person. For that reason I am out.

What are you talking about? I use my real voice in this video. I used to use a text to speech when I first started the channel but switched up to using my real voice by popular demand. Every video from the pregnancy crisis onwards features my actual human voice. You’re the first person to say that my real voice sounds like a text to speech voice. I’m actually pretty insulted by your comment.
