What did we break on Thompsons Track NZ!?! MUD RUTS AND WHEEL LIFTS!

This was the goal for our trip north. To take on the infamous Thompsons 4WD Track. It lived up to its name, We caught it at a rather dry time but it was easy to see how a little rain here could make or break your days adventure. We headed in from Te Aroha and made it to the view point at the saddle. KatiKati will have to wait for another day. What an adventure!

the bogs on the Katikati side are massive and deep. have been over to Katikati and back a number of times, but in the past 5 years haven't seen any 4x4s go all the way.

I've heard plenty of horror stories from Katikati side haha it would be a huge feat to make it the whole journey. It's makes think of a challenge like 4WD24/7 doing the $1000 track haha

⁠@@4X4MonthlyNZjust found this one I only live just over an hour from this track some weekends you would get 20 - 30 trucks going up there lots from Auckland 90 minutes away the last time I went through and back would be 18 years ago hell time flies seems like yesterday and I haven’t bothered since I’m told it’s a shit hole now on the other side mean track tho you guys done all right

? Thompson's track ? Ah - I'm thinking of the older dry weather 2wd road, (4wd in adverse weather) through & along Thompson's Gorge road, between Omakau & Tarras, in Central Otago. Your in the North Island - which is why you have so much mud there - (as it's not a public road at all - but a muddy off-road)

Yeah after starting an almost argument online about if our trucks would make it or not we played it safe and kept to the te aroha side as for us, this is far from home. We will be back to take on the challenge though. You can be sure of that.

@@4X4MonthlyNZ nah they don’t do it justice haha. I live pretty local and never had a successful trip down there. You guys might of been able to squeeze your way down too finger rock which is where the actual hard part starts and turned around there, a short walk from there would give you an idea of what it’s like.

Have you visited Thompsons again lately? It's a completely different track now. I reckon in 50 years time it will be a valley separating Te Aroha and Katikati lol

Unfortunately not. It's a big haul to get the rigs up there. With ferry prices and fuel prices I'm not sure when it will happen again next. We are keen though! wanna hit all the north Island tracks we did plus more!

40mm Ironman lift with 32" Achillies Deserthawks. After lock down though going to 50mm dobinsons and 33" Razrs. It's a wicked little trail, rather intense for a first serious track though haha glad ya made it though

Used to do katikati side on the regular long bog can be death of trucks walked out few times at 3am 🤣🤣

I still have serious hopes to one day take a convoy of touring rigs through there. Gonna be a challenge and a half but hell. Makes for great content. hahha

haha It is the plastic mount the corner segment clips onto.. if I hadn't ripped it off in the Whangamamona track earlier that week haha

@@4X4MonthlyNZ sorry to say mate but a surf never will especially set up for touring dont even bother with the track until ya got solid axle, minimum 35 silvies, lockers and a comp winch otherwise you’ll be another clown on facebook paying someone with a real 4x4 thousands to come in and drag you out. the sides are about the same length but te aroha took us an hour and katikati took 8 in peak summer so bear that in mind

I couldn’t believe the state of it here. Did it with a mate almost 20 years ago in a stock SWB safari. Effortless. To the point we went looking for trouble on a side track because it was so easy. Then we got stuck. Amazing how it’s changed.

I want to be able to get it across that there are technical and tactical ways to an obstacle and tearing it up is the simplest form of completing that obstacle. Hopefully 'how to' videos will be coming once i find some spare time haha but cheers mate! appreciate the comment.

Faaark bro that saf is sexy asf, I'm picking up a new surf hopefully this weekend, first 4x4 and then hopefully my next one will be a safari, any tips or advice you could give us?

Buy something stock standard. Both the Surf and the Saf are well time tested 4WD but if they come with modifications, you can almost always be guaranteed that they come with problems too. Not always the case but I've found stock vehicles are far more mechanically sound. Then build it from there.

I doubt these trucks did any major impact on the track that day. Thompson's Track is also notoriously known as a rough track and the NZFWDA along with affiliated clubs are doing everything they can to keep this remote road open and accessible to the public. They understand 4WDing has a broad range of interest including those with bigger tyres and Thompsons Track is a place for them to go.
