Viggo Mortensen was cast as Aragon after filming had begun, leaving him very little time to prepare for the role, particularly in sword fighting! Despite this, he received an intensive crash course from swordmaster Bob Anderson and ultimately became one of the most accomplished swordsmen Anderson had ever worked with!

Something he WASN'T EVEN PREPARED FOR! That dagger thrown at him was a total accident, but he just perfectly reflected the dagger. Avoiding injury and looking so sick, it had to stay in the movie!

@@znuffyztruggles5744 different stories are circulating about this scene. Another version I have also heard is that they wanted to do it and they tried it in rehearsal and Viggo nailed it on the first take, which is now in the movie.

you NEVER hear people say anything bad about viggo. He commits himself to the roles he plays. iirc people have called him "no ego viggo". so many stories of what he did for others during this film. a very humble man

I have seen one of his interviews on how to deal with demented senior... It was basically.. If the demented person keep asking for a person that has passed away.. Don't tell them the truth to prevent from hurting them again and again.. I nearly cried listening to that..

All these great little hidge stories of Viggo are amazing. But I always love the fact that he was requested or encouraged to bring his sword when he dined in villages/cities near filming sites. And would at times go right off of set. I can imagine after the fellowship of the ring dropped. Aragorn spawning in full dress up with a sword, starting to munch down on a double cheeseburger next to you, with Viggo's car-wash danish accent would've been something to behold.

Viggo Mortensen was such a perfect Aragorn. Maybe the only actor that likely would've made a better Aragorn is Daniel Day-Lewis who famously turned down the role. At the time I was actually really disappointed by it but thankfully in retrospect I couldn't be happier that DDL turned it down, solely for what it did for Viggo Mortensen's career and the roles we've gotten to see him play as a result.. I also gotta say its so amazing how with such short notice they were still able to find likely literally the second best choice in the world for the role and even crazier that it was when Viggo Mortensen was still so relatively little known. Amazing casting across the board really.

The fight scenes later on are significantly better - you can kind of track the progression of his training through the films. The first couple fight scenes are a bit sloppy and silly, but they act as sort of an unintentional secondary means of showing his character's evolution. The only issue is that it doesn't make sense in context - Aragorn is about 90 years old (he's also nearly a foot taller than Viggo Mortenson, but Viggo does such a great job playing the part the physical dissimilarities can be forgiven), so he has decades of experience and in the books he doesn't really grow or change as much as he does in the films.

his sword fighting and even acting was strange in the first few scenes viggo was in, i always felt he was a bit out-of-character in bree. but it kind of works. at first hes a bit sleezy, sloppy, even rude, and the hobbits are unsure of whether to trust him. then, as they travel with him to rivendell, we see the truth of his character, and eventually his real skill.

Seeing all these behind the scenes and commentaries, makes me think that this isn't an ordinary film making but also a camp for the actors to become the best version of themselves, or even unlock some of their hidden potentials 😆

Another irony is that one of the reasons that Stewart Townsend was canned as Aragorn was that he wasn't willing to do the advance training or prep work. He kept saying, "We'll pick it up on the day." Viggo had to start out with a crash cram course and then had to pick it up on the day. Viggo then went on to spend his off time and time between filming to learn what the others been able to work on for several months. Viggo really worked on riding and bonding with the high energy war horses that he had to ride.
