My Esprit S2 was identical - except that I swapped the rear glass for the open louvres of the Turbo Esprit. Later, having experienced one too many blow-offs by other drivers, the worst being two cute girls in a Honda CRX!! I decided that I would take it no more, so I hopped it up with an all-aluminium, custom-built Buick 215cu in, which was the engine sold to Rover and which became the Rover 3.5 litre and went into so many British cars. The engine was all ported and polished, had a special crankshaft. It was no heavier than the Lotus engne but I had 300hp in that Esprit - what a sleeper it was. I kept the same Citroen SM gearbox and it could handle all that hp. I did take out clutch disks, though, but that was cured with a centerforce clutch. The gear ratios weren't quite right for the extra hp, so I always started off in second. Second gear got me 90mph, with three gears left to go. A friend and I drove for 30 mins at 140mph on Hwy 80 in California! The car was fantastic at that speed - it just squatted down and was utterly stable. The car wasn't chopped in any way to get that engine into it. All I had to do was add two radiators. I drove it every day in Vancouver Canada and then brought it down to California. I had no chance to get it through the 'smog' test here in California, so I drove it 18 hrs up to Vancouver and sold it there. What a fabulous car and a real testament to Colin Chapman and the Lotus people. One quick story: I had a friend, Gordon, with a 1988 Corvette, who told me that when I was all finished with the Lotus we would have a quick drag race, he would beat the pants off me and then I could go crying home to mummy. Well.... about 5 weeks later he showed up at my office at the end of a work day and we decided to drive to my place about 3 miles away and have a couple of beers. I said look, let;s just drive like a couple of old ladies please no racing or 'edgy' driving because my gear shift wasn;t yet set to the correct throw and I could only get second gear and upwards. He agreed so off we went - I was in front in the Lotus. Within no more than 50 yards I heard his Corvette revving behind me and he was pushing me to go for it. What the hell - I went for max. We were on a long, tightening curve, about 1 quarter of a mile long, terminating at a tee junction at a heavily-trafficked street. I was at over 80mph and all four tires were shrieking. He was dropped back and I needded to begin a shutdown but I didn't dare touch the brakes, so I just floored the clutch and waited. I looked in the rearview mirror - Gordon was now completely sideways at 80mph, I ignored him and concentrated on my shutdown - looked back at the mirror - Gordon was now backwards at 70mph, I started braking now, looked anxiously at the mirror - Gordon was now sideways again - this time in the opposite direction. Now I came to a stop at the intersection and waited. Gordon pulled alongside and was white as a sheet - haha! The Lotus triumphed! The next day, Gordon came t my office and we went in his car for lunch. The ride was terrible - I mean unbelievably terrible, as if the wheels were square. When we stopped I look at his (super-expensive) tires and they were all flattened in one big patch. He had frozen on the brakes during his 80mph loop on the road. BWAHAHAHA! So the conclusion: Corvette=straight-line car - no match for a Lotus - just lead any pumped-up American car into a corner at high speed in your Esprit and watch the fun!
@opethmike4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, any Corvette driver that can't follow an Esprit in the corners simply isn't a good driver. The Esprit chassis is built out of spaghetti.
@fbloggs4 жыл бұрын
