A truly historic and innovative automobile. I got to see a Chrysler Turbine car at a local dealer as it went on a cross-country tour. I was seven years old, and it got my life-long interest in cars started. I realized at that time just how special it was. I loved my Jo-Han plastic model kit, which was molded in the same color ( Turbine Bronze ) as the real car.

Very cool! I saw one twice in S. Florida. Once at a shopping center where they were demonstrating that they could balance a coin placed on it's edge on the motor and once when they were cruising the local drive-ins. We thought the future had arrived. Little did we know that in only 50 years we could have a Prius. They have been promising us flying cars and we got the Prius....

Lou. I had the pleasure of riding in one of these in the summer of 1966 as car crazy kid. My mom's best friend called her on a Sunday to tell her father, a prominent attorney in New York, was visiting. We go to the house and one off these incredible cars was there. He said he was borrowing it. I got in and he gave four of us a ride. I remember the beautiful orange seats and the jet engine sound. I doubt he used Chanel number 5 , but I will never forget that day as a 10 year old. I have Steve Lehto's book on this car and he signed it for me. Chrysler was an engineering company far more than anyone else. A piece of history. Jay Leno is the original owner of his. Awesome job as always Lou.

Growing up in Southern California, I had a neighbor, Max, who used to work for Chrysler Corporation. I remember my father telling me that Max once brought home a Turbine Car and that Max ran it on kerosene. It must've been somewhere between 1965 and 1967, as I was too young to remember.

Fascinating - Detroit in the 60's was flying high and no mistake - what a car, what a story . . .

After all these years, still a beautiful automobile.

Wow does this evoke a long buried memory! In ‘64 (‘65?) I was 13 and my parents took me to look at an apartment in Tiburon California (we lived in San Francisco). The salesman had a model Turbine car, maybe 1:18, that I drooled over. He handed it to me as we left. I had it for years but have no clue now as to it’s fate. I must have disassembled and reassembled it a hundred times. It may well have been a factor in me ultimately being a mechanical engineer and working some on steam turbines in shipyards. Thanks Lou for another fantastic video and sweet memory.

Your car selection is very interesting. I installed 12v power and show lighting to one of these turbines at the 1979 Miami Beach Convention Center Auto Show, I've never seen one ever again. Same Copper color, BTW.

I saw that car in person at the Walter P. Chrysler Museum , and although it was high up on a carousel, you couldn't believe the proportions of that entire rear taillight assembly (truly huge); something that really can't be conveyed on video. However, I never got to see that full-length center console...thanks Lou!

Saw one of these as a kid in our local Chrysler dealership and it was roped off. But never saw one in this detail. This was a great story Lou. I do remember these growing up yes. I know he said they came in only one color but I swear the one we had here was a turqouis blue color I swear to it but hey I was just a little falla when it was in Canton Ohio as a kid. If you were interested in car engineering, The Chrysler Corperation was the company you would want to be working for in the 60’s. Chrysler was always looking into the future or the next best thing including the 426 hemispherical engine they would release around the same time. Thx Lou!

This is one of those cars that you ask yourself WHAT IF they actually manufactured and sold these to the public. It still looks good after all these years, Chrysler in those days had the best engineers.

Lou , that reset box is related to the Turbine engines used in a Helicopter . The engine has limitations for heat where fuel intake should be below 150 degrees as a Cold-Start but trying to restart it when hot is tricky . The starter would drive Turbine with Fuel-Off to cool down the Turbine Output Temp ( TOT on the chopper gauge ) and it is usually a 30 second break before alowing fuel in . That's the short version to explain the box under the hood. If the driver was in charge and treated it like a normal car to just turn the key and go .....the damage could be anywhere from a $1000 inspection to $50,000 to repair or just replace the engine. Look like Chrysler accounted for the stop and go use to put the box where the engine can buy 30 seconds to cool down . When the car is moving there's a steady flow of air where the exhaust finds its heat level, but the starting up while still hot doesn't have the RPM's for that air flow to draw off heat . Passenger jets have about 45 seconds at Full Throtle during take-off to get airborn and claim into thinner air as they go faster to cool off the engine.....if not , the Blades will melt from the heat since the air is thick at ground level and heats up with friction as we saw with returning space capsules needing a heat shield . There was a story going around that one of the cars loaned out for testing wouldn't turn off when the person got home and it melted their driveway from the engine heat before the Chrysler person got there to shut it down . Once the sparkplug/ignitor start the fuel burning it's like a diesel engine where you cut off the fuel to stop it or hold on tight until you run out of fuel .

Weird. In was a freshman in college in 1964 when a Chrysler demo team arrived out side of the Student Union with this turbine car. The gave a pitch, lets us look and sit inside, popped the hood to look at the turbine engine, and would start it up periodically to demonstrate how quiet and smooth running the engine was. They's balance a quarter on edge on the hood and rev up the engine to show that the quarter remained on its edge. After a couple of days, they left. I never heard of it again until this video. This car looks exactly like the one they had at the college including the same color.

Great offering here ! Thank You ! Charger Daytona recently. A fan of course but did see a Super Bird fairly regularly in the late '70s. Turbine,,,,only car that mystified me as much was the Olds Toronado when I was I kid.. too bad this example Turbine is nf. Still a beauty.

A neat idea that was WAY WAY ahead of its time...

Saw this car at the 1964 worlds fair, you could stand on line and get a ride in it.

Swear i have met this dave gentlemen somewhere before as i am also in michigan very close to where he works. He looks and sounds so familiar.

This '64 Turbine Bronze beauty was Chrysler's 5th generation turbine car. Chrysler began its experimental turbine in the early '50s, and Gen 1 was a '54 Plymouth turbine car, followed by '55 Plymouth, '60 Plymouth, '62 Plymouth Fury and Dodge Dart, then this '64 beauty, then in a '67 Coronet, and 7th - and final - generation turbine in a concept car developed with input from US Dept. of Energy. Issues of gas mileage, exhaust heat, drivability and emissions were constantly being tweaked and improved with each successive generation. Last on this list, that was never fully resolved, was California emissions, primarily because Mother Mopar redirected its internal engineering efforts to respond to Congressional legislators' reconfiguration of the auto industry to meet new more stringent anti-smog standards. There's a great book - "Chrysler's Turbine Car - The Rise and Fall of Detroit's Coolest Creation" by Steve Lehto, with Forward by Jay Leno, that's available online - highly recommended! A quote from this book - "Many of the engineers from the turbine program were pulled out of their departments and reassigned to work on reducing tailpipe emissions from piston-engine cars." This in response to the 1970 Clean Air Act.During this '64-'65 user program, a Chrysler engineer would meet each new user at the start of his/her 3-month period, to educate them on how to operate the car. If there was a mechanical malfunction, and engineer would fly out from the factory and, if needed take the car back to Detroit to refit a new engine. The 'down-time' from a malfunction did not extend the user's 3-month user period. As a 15-year old car-crazed kid growing up in the Chicago south side Beverly neighborhood, I saw one of these beauties cruising near me twice. But I could never get close enough for an upfront and personal look.

All great designs remained back in 1960's. Now we've got the CyberTruck.

The man said the cars averaged 150,000 miles in two years, not just 150.

I was going to college at Jacksonville University in Jacksonville, FL and saw one of these turbines on the road. It was something to see. It looked exactly like that with the same color. Seems one of the problems with it was its really bad gas mileage. I suspect they were interesting to drive because you were essentially driving a jet engine automobile. You didn't want to get too close to the exhaust because it could melt plastic or cook your hot dog. Might be great (and pretty expensive) on a picnic.

My Uncle Sam used to tell me about those cars, he had seen one when it was brand new or just a couple years old.

Interesting concept but the gas mileage on these turbine cars being a little worse than the average car at the time and Chrysler hit financial problems at this time so it wasn't practical for them to keep throwing money at the project. What's crazy is Chrysler offered these to museums and hardly anyone at the time wanted them so most of them got crushed!

To disable this car from running should be a felony.

Jay Leno has an actual running example of the Chrysler Turbine car. This one is all show, and no go! I think that it's a shame that Chrysler deliberately disabled the engines in the museum cars, and making these cars totally lame! I was not at all impressed by the fact that this car doesn't even run anymore, and it's all for show, all un the name of greed from Big Oil!
