On "My Car Story" we're at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in Pebble Beach CA on 8-21-22.
We're looking at a 1963 Chrysler Turbine Ghia. The car comes with the factory turbine engine that can rev up to 40,000 RPM’s and weighs only 400 pounds. The Turbine car was able to get 130 horsepower with 425 lb. -ft. of torque, and had a fuel economy of 14.5 mpg, 18-19 on the highway.
The car's Caretaker is Seamus Hnat. Seamus shares the Stahls Automotive Collection has had this car since 2021. Seamus shares there were 55 built for a public program and 5 of these were prototypes. In 1966 the program was cancelled, and all but 9 were crushed. Few of the 9 cars run, so to hear this one drive by is a real treat.

Just when you think Lou has shown us the best of the 1960's, he finds a Chrysler Turbine car - IMHO - one of the most beautiful vehicles from the 1960's. That design just works and never gets old. While I'm not a vinyl roof kind of guy, that black roof just showcases the whole design. That young man sure does know that car! This is really a piece of Automobile history, and I thank you for sharing this. Just listening to the young man talk about the history of the car was an added treat. Thank you for sharing, Lou!

Eat your heart out, George Jetson! The turbine car still looks futuristic today and sounds better than a Hellcat. Seamus not only knows the details, but captured the attention of everyone around the hood. Lou was smart to let him do most of the talking. A tip of the fez to Chrysler engineering and imagination.

I've always thought those cars were really cool, very futuristic for the time when it was created. I Love the details throughout the entire car. I am super impressed with the young man's knowledge of this car!!! It was awesome listening to him explain things and was so neat to see this young man educating the older guys about the car!!! These certainly were an iconic part of the 1960’s. It looked so futuristic. I remember them when I was 7 years old and they were in the news. Now I’m 66 and it is still cool.

SO glad some of these survived the crusher, despite the mandate to have all examples destroyed. It's an important part of automotive history experimentation, innovation and future vision thinking. The "jet engine" (turbine) look of the headlights-to-taillights was all the rage and the body was brilliantly designed by Ghia for a beautiful looking car. This young man not only has an amazing knowledge of the engineering behind the car, but the historical context, the history of the era and why this car was so important and unique from all the other "concept cars" of the day, this was intended for daily use! What an amazingly inspiring vehicle from the "hover car" era of design.

Seamus was quite entertaining! I have always loved the Chrysler Turbine car. I remember my dad taking the family to one of the local Chrysler dealers in 1963(?) to see it as it was touring across Canada. I was only 6 years old, but it made quite an impression on me. I have owned a few of the plastic model kits of the car over the years, and I loved that they were molded in copper-colored plastic (no painting required! lol). It is quite the story, and this young man was enjoying telling it. As always, thanks Lou!

Looks like Seamus really wowed the judges!! They were hanging on to every word!! Waited at least an hour for my Dad to get a ride in one of these in 1964 at the Chrysler Pavilion of the NY Worlds Fair!!! Every minute or so anther turbine car would scream by!!! Thanks for the memories Lou!!!!

Wow! Incredible specimen of Chrysler engineering from the early ‘50s. These beautiful Ghia-bodied ‘63 Turbine Cars were a site to behold back in the day when lucky folks won the privilege of driving these for 3-month periods. I saw one a couple times in our Chicago Southside neighborhood. Saw this Turbine Car at the Stahl Museum, hosted by Teri and Seamus, last September during our Auburn Hills MI Chrysler 300 Club Fall Meet. Seamus, a grad of McPherson College, is a wonderful young man.

The body of the Chrysler Turbine Ghia was designed by Elwood Engel who used to work at Ford Motor Company. Before he left to join Chrysler, he designed the '61 - '63 Thunderbird a/k/a the "Bullet Bird" because of it bullet shaped front end. The squared off roof designs of both cars are very similar, but if you look at rear end of a Bullet Bird, it resembles the front end of a Turbine Ghia. Wow! One of my favorite cars! I remember seeing the first one in a museum by the LaBrea Tar Pits in L.A. when I was a kid. These were displayed with a non-running engine, with another turbine engine sitting next to the car. Years later, I saw the 2nd one at the Harrah car museum in Sparks, NV. It was displayed like the first one I saw. The Turbine cars were loaned to museums after testing was completed. Chrysler had a bunch more of turbine engines as they were still testing them into the late-60's, atleast. These were equipped with TorqueFlite automatics so that they had forward and reverse. Like an automatic built for racing, they didn't automatically upshift. No need to, like an electric car, there was no need for anything more than a direct-drive gear. They had no torque converter either. No need for that as the drive turbine blew into another one which took the place of the torque converter. Great video, thank you!

The car showed at our local Chrysler dealer, Trans-Island Motors, and I was there for the intro, an 11 year old car nut. Sad that so many were scrapped but they couldnt be registered state side. Beatiful example, and thanks to you both.

Another great icon for the channel Lou! Seamus is very knowledgeable about the car and the program - great to see. The car is a fantastic example - might be the best Turbine surviving. I love the experimental nature of it and the car gives me Thunderbird vibes. I think one of the stylists had come to Chrysler from Ford.

I remember seeing a Dodge with the turbine engine at my local dealer in 1963. They balanced a nickel on edge on top of the engine and started the turbine and revved it up and absolutely no vibration. The nickel remained steady and didn't fall over. They said the engine had 7 moving parts and in the dead of winter provided max heat in 30 seconds. I wanted one so much but it never made it to market. They claimed people didn't like the turbine sound and the mpg was not so good. Heck my 1969 GTO only got 9 mpg and 14 on the highway.

Another great video. I got a ride in one when they were given to the general public to drive. My guidance counselor in junior high school was one of the people that got one to drive for 6 months. At the time I had no idea how unique the car was, other than it had a turbine engine in it.

What a car and a fantastic custodian for it in Seamus. Worth a check to look at the Stahl Automotive Foundation, where this Chrysler Turbine Car resides alongside a very interesting collection of classic cars from all eras. Turbines must have been seen as a new way of propulsion when this car was created by Chrysler, for not long afterwards, our USCG incorporated gas turbines in their new-designed and built 210 foot medium endurance cutters as well as their late-1960's built 378 foot long high endurance cutters, which featured Pratt & Whitney gas turbines that had an output of 36,000 horsepower! As always, Lou, thank you for what you do in presenting these amazing cars!!

I have the die cast version. I remember the movie with the Turbine car in a race. I've always been fascinated by this car. Chrysler almost made it a production reality with the Mirada version but the guaranteed loans ended all that. They turned over all of the turbine technology to the Feds in exchange for the loans. Can you imagine this motor in the '81-83 Imperial or Mirada?

My dad knew a Chrysler Rep years ago... He always said that those Turbine Cars could literally run on anything, from pi$$ to perfume. As long as it had some kind of volatility, it'd burn it. I just wish we were around when those were selling for $2,500 as used cars.

Chrysler missed a huge marketing idea by having this in the Batman TV series as an actual functioning Turbine Batmobile

So sad that gas turbine engines didn't make it to production cars. Indy 500 had gas turbine cars in 1967 and 1968 before they were banned from Indy altogether. In 1968, one gas turbine car was carying the race and a suspension component failed a few laps from finish. The engine proved to be superior to piston engines. Much less moving parts but the intakes have to be highly filtered and protected from FOD (foreign object damage). The compressor blades have very close tolerances. Thanks for posting, Lou. The car was way ahead of its time like when the F-4 Phantom II fighter entered military service around the same time.

Thanks, Lou and all… Interestingly, 1963 was a great “ time”: we all heard about & talked about these TURBINE Chryslers ( I never seen one); my Grandfather just buying his lasT MOPAR: 1963 NEW YORKER, 300 ( not Letter)IN all “ baby Blue”, NO Air Conditioning ! Actually, figured I may get the ‘63 some Day………did not happen, but OK.

Wow, Lou! Thanks for this amazing car story! I guess I can't add much in commentary, here..Seamus has it down! Maybe Chrysler should have invested the $ into the engine & had a longer developement time and skipped the Ghia deal, though we cannot argue with how lovely these fantastic cars are 🧡 & Talk about a Flex Fuel vehicle, ahaha! An amazing piece of history and technology. Ofc, Chryslers Electronics division did help NASA get to the moon.

The engine continued to be developed through about 1981. It reached it's seventh generation, and was put in a Dodge Mirada.

The first time I saw one of these was in 64' when I was a kid. A friend went to the NY Worlds Fair and got a model car of this. The same guy who designed this soon left Chrysler and went to work for Ford and helped design the 64'T-Bird. Lots of resemblance carried over in styilng.

Elwood Engel, who designed the 61 Thunderbird and Continental for Ford, went to Chrysler. He had input on the 63 Chryslers and Darts and designed the 64 Imperial and the full sized 65 Mopar cars.

Home Run Lou!..Such great Jet Age styling but you can see Elwood Engle all over this model, you could slap some Galaxie call outs on her and nobody would blink. I got to see a 60? Plymouth Turbine Car that looked like it had an electro-lux under the hood some time in '76 or '77 in Wrentham, Mass. My sister's BF knew of the guy who owned it and we followed him for miles until he parked, he was gracious enough to lift the hood and show her off. I always wondered what happened to that car, as I'm sure he owned it, he said he had an Auburn Boat Tail too

This car was Chrysler’s answer to General Motors’ “Firebird series” of futuristic turbine-driven cars of the fifties. Sadly, what doomed this cutting-edge space-age technology was not only “cost,” but “emission’s standards!”

Reminds me of the M-1 tank I used to drive.... that's a lot prettier than my tank though. I remember a racing movie sponsored by Chrysler in the 60's to promote the turbine idea....stared James Darrin , I think...?

Chrysler must have spent a lot of money developing this car. The technology in this car was ahead of its time; Chrysler found out to late that the price to manufacture these cars were more than what anyone would pay for them. Too bad, it may have led to something greater in automotive history. Maybe the Superbord would have had retractable wings that could make it fly??

The exhaust heat was the killer for these cars. You would get fried if you stood close behind them at acceleration.

This is not correct. The exhaust temperature was about the same as a blow dryer. Chrysler was careful to ensure that the turbine exhaust would not cause problems. Read Steve Letho's book. There is also a video of a man putting his hand up to the exhaust without burns.

Equipped with a fourth-generation Chrysler turbine engine, the Turbine car was able to get 130 horsepower with 425 lb. -ft. of torque, and had a fuel economy of 14.5 mpg, 18-19 on the highway.

Thank you, Lou, and Seamus. Very good explanations from Seamus. Lou, I've commented on this issue before, but you continue to disappoint in video capture. There are many of us that want to see the layouts of dashboards, consoles, and the labeling and design of gauges, knobs, levers, along with other interior appointments. Your camera usage goes far too fast and too blurry to even stop the video for reading these and in study of details. After all my years this was the first time that I had the opportunity to view the console in these cars, and you couldn't have done a worse job. I'm going to suggest that you watch this video, and try and reading the gauges, knobs, and levers, and other facets of the interior, with enthusiasm as we subscribers do. Then you can see what I mean. Your channel is about showing us the cars and time after time you're letting us down.

Of course this Chrysler Turbine car had to be at Pebble Beach, where you couldn't go for a ride in it. What I didn't like about these cars is that they're all the exact same color, and they're all the same in every detail. What a crying shame that these cars never made it into production. I wasn't impressed with that kid's presentation at all. JMO
