On "My Car Story" we're in Auburn, IN on 5-8-15 at the Early Ford V-8 Foundation & Museum.
We're looking at a 1936 Ford Stainless Steel Tudor Deluxe Touring Sedan Model 68-700.
We’re talking with Josh Conrad who is the Collections Coordinator, and Ron Stauffer who is a Trustee and on the Building Committee for the Museum. Yes that’s right, this car has no paint because it is 1 of 6 original Stainless Steel Cars built by Ford! There are only 4 left that are known to exist.
If you’re interested in seeing this car in person, go to the Early Ford V-8 Foundation & Museum. The Museum is located at 2181 General Doolittle Drive, Auburn, IN 46706. Or go to www.FordV8Foundation.org and view their inventory.

>>> I remember seeing the S.S. Ford at the Crawford Auto Museum in Cleveland, Ohio somewhere around 35 years ago That car might have been one of many cars that was auctioned off to the general public by the Board of Directors to cover operating expenses somewhere around 25 years ago. Many people who donated their cars were outraged that the cars that they donated, were sold off. There were sidewalk protests and plenty of newspaper / television coverage on this selling off of these cars. The wife of the Founder of this museum who was in her nineties was one of the protetors. Truly a sad day for those who donated valuable cars, and for car people in general. .................................... Jim.

The skills required to restore this car would be so hard to find. The body work would be so difficult, truly an art. Think about it, no paint and no body fillers to cover the flaws. Just metal worked to absolute perfection and then polished to a mirror finish. Very impressive.

actually, those skills are kind of making a comeback. The guys that do the "pointless" dent repair have developed a lot of processes and skills to deal with dents and dings without using filler or even repainting. Glad to see it... I had a modicum of such skill back in the day, taught by old hands how to work the metal... but by the time I gout out in the the job market ... they weren't using that skill much any more, fill it and go was the name of the game. Insurance companies would not pay for the time to do real work, and the metal got to where it was like trying to work on aluminum foil (and less) in many cars, so that did go by the wayside and not having work to do in that vein my emerging skills stagnated, withered and died. I can still do a little but I'm so old now.... anyway the pointless repair guys are really coming along. Some are unbelievable in what they can do without filler and paint to help.

@@tootall5559 The skill to produce them is amazing. I restore old trucks and I try not to use any fillers but metal is not as good as the really old stuff. My collision and paint teacher was in his late seventys early eighties. That was 45 years ago he was a master. But even he said the metal of the late sixtys and seventys was in no way as good. Low carbon content he would say.
@tootall5559
@tootall5559 4 жыл бұрын
@@shackman9566 yes, that was the beginning of the decline However the steel used in the sixties and seventies was way better than the small amount of steel they actually use these days. On my 51 Dodge I used to have, the metal was strong and fairly thick. You could work it all day if need be, then come back and work it again when it got dented again. by the 60's, it wasn't that good, then a little worse in the 70's, then about the 80s there was a really sharp decline in the quality and thickness, let alone the use of plastic more than steel.
@tootall5559

@@shackman9566 I knew a guy, he was the upholstery instructor at the school I went to for paint and body. (back then they were still teaching leading) He had to quit doing body work, couldn't stand to be near the bondo dust. However he did restore a shot up old Oldsmobile from the 30's to a 98 concourse number. He'd used a little bit of modern wire way up under that dash and they found it, that's how closely they judge. Anyway, there was no body filler in it, except for one small spot of lead in the roof where the bar came under it, he couldn't get behind it with a dolly or he would have worked that out too. No other filler, except it was said he used as much welding rod as the whole school used learning to gas weld. Never said exactly how much he used or how many tanks of gas he used to get it done. but the damn thing was sure beautiful Somewhere, somehow he got hold of some old Nitro lacquer for it, so even the paint was what it should have been. For a time you could get acrylic lacquer, back then but no nitro. Tell you what about that old nitro though, a guy dragged in a...think it was a 30's Ford, if memory serves. It hat the exhaust coming right straight up out of the hood, and big hole in the roof that was cut out so they could use it for coyote and rabbit hunting on the fly. Anyway, where the paint was still on it, it would still buff up to looking like new. Seems to me there aught to be ways to get that today, surely they could come up with ways to deal with the problems with it. Base coat clear coat sucks, especially for custom work.

My husband took care of these cars when he was head of security for Allegheny Ludlum Steel (ALS). They had two of the cars in the company's possession - one at the Brackenridge Works in Brackenrige, PA, and one in their Ohio Sales Office. A third car had been donated to the Crawford Air & Auto Museum in Cleveland or Columbus, OH. The car in the video was probably one that ALS had given or sold to the dentist who pioneered the use of stainless in dental work, Dr. VLK in Chicago. My husband spoke to Dr. VLK's wife in the 1980's and she said the car was still in her possession but was going to their son. My husband spoke to her son who insisted it was the only car like it in the world - wrong! My husband also had possession (stored at ALS) enough spare body parts - fenders, doors, hoods, trunks, etc. - for two more cars, or actually for replacements in the event of damage. My guess is that the fellow who restored the car in the video, got it from Dr. VLK's son. There WAS also a 5th car, melted down during WW2 for one of many scrape drives in Tarentum, Brackenrdige and Natrona and Natrona Heights, PA. ALS also had a 1931 Ford Model A that was located in a barn in a Southern State. One of the ALS salesmen went to see it, but it was in terrible condition. The guy that had it wanted $1 MILLION for it, but it was in such bad shape, my husband said the then President, Bob Bozzone, declined to buy it for even $10 THOUSAND. The guy that had it had even taken a grinder to the left front fender, "... to see if it was really stainless." Originally, there were TWO Model A Stainlss Fords, but during WW2, the company used it and another '36 Tudor Ford to lead scrape drives during WW2. On two seaparate drives, they drove each one into Open Hearth Furnaces to be melted down for the war effort. (Neither furnace was lit or hot, and they took them back out to dismantle them before melting. I'm not certain they drove them IN to the furnaces, or just outside of them which seems more likely. My husband had one each of the Stainless Cars - the '36, a 1960 Ford T-Bird ("Square Bird") and a 1967 Lincoln convertible, all of which he had fully restore to factory condition. I used to accompany him to verious car shows - Williamsburg, VA, Baltimore, MD, Carlise and York, PA, Jamestown, NY, Cleveland and Columbus, OH, Hartford, and Wallingford, CN and Toronto, Canada. Sadly, ALS didn't care one bit about their, or the car's history and sold them for greed. Chicago had one of the Lincolns that the Sales Office there let deteriorate from pure neglect; and Wallingford, CN had another T-Bird that an employee vandalized, breaking all the glass and hitting the hoot, trunk & body with a large fire extinguisher.

I worked for Allegheny Ludlum Steel back in the late 70's. I accidentally ran across this car while looking for a 1930's Buick . The guy I talked to was baby sitting it for a time. Later on in Leechburg Pennsylvania at a car show I saw the stainless T-bird. I have yet to see the stainless Lincoln. Each vehicle is absolutely a work of art . The 36 turned up again at a car show in Butler , Pa. as I recall.

This car is amazing!! The stainless steel is so beautiful!! The only thing I can think of that would have made this car even MORE beautiful is if they would have made SOME of the body panels (like the SIDES of the hood), the grille, the bumpers, the trunk lid, and the hubcaps out of BRASS to give the car a TWO-TONES look!!

I am having a Jaws motorcycle model 1968. I got my motorcycle's petrol tank fully nicklled and most of the other parts nicklled such as the mudguards, wheels, spokes, shocker sleeves. When I took out my Jawa for a ride I could not stand the reflection of sunlight from the petrol tank. I got the nickel of the petrol tank scratched and filled and painted leaf green

When Allegheny Ludlum was notified that their two Stainless 1960 T-Birds arrived a the Ford Dealer, they were told that the cars, both of which had the same kind of polished, mirror finish, would not pas PA Vehicle Inspection because the State Police checked them and refused to let them on the road. Allegheny Ludlum paid $30,000 Dollars EACH, for the cars to be "sanded" into a matte finish. (My husband had charge of the cars when he was head of AL Security.)

Thanks for uploading this Lou, I remember reading an article on the stainless '36s in an Aussie hot rod magazine, Custom Rodder, about forty years ago and have loved them ever since. The '36 model is among my favourite Fords. The only early (by my reckoning anything older than me) Ford I've had so far was a channelled '32 roadster, I'd like one day to build an off road mid thirties sedan, or maybe pick up.

Seems as though stainless steel cars would be traffic hazards. Their reflectivity blinding people when the sun hit it just right. The interior was restored to STOCK Ford production line specs. Not one item in the interior of this car is different. Oh! Even tough it was caught and corrected during the filming, the window trim inside the car IS NOT WOOD, it was steel painted on the production line to resemble wood. VERY common practice during that era.

I believe they did some Model A's as well with stainless. Don't know if it's accurate, but I read somewhere that the dies were ruined in the stamping of the stainless since it's so much "tougher" than mild steel. Simply "gorgeous" car. The inside as much as the outside!!

Back then the vehicles were not buffed out as much as this example. The cars were driven by company reps and the usual road grime built up, was wiped clean, and sometimes hand buffed if scheduled to appear at a special event. The examples of the 36 and T bird I have seen in public were no more shiney then a typical kitchen sink. However, I have recently seen on the local streets metallic vinyl coated vehicles more reflective the the subject vehicle shown here.

Glad someone mention the word "bus". Stainless steel covered a large area of the GMC over the road buses such as those owned by Greyhound. Those were common sights on American roadways up until what, the 1990's. This car is on display and was over buffed for that reason only My.

AWESOME video Lou Costabile, for an AWESOME Ford. I've seen some stainless steel/chrome wrapped cars before, but they DO NOT compare to the real thing, it's like they took a high quality kitchen knife set and turned it into a beautiful 36 Ford! I think it would also look epic if some or all of the panels were BRUSHED stainless steel, so your not distracted by the reflection of it's surroundings. WOW WOW WOW.

Only thing different on these "Special Build" model 68 Ford's (1936 model year run, two door sedans, deluxe trim) was the stainless steel body panels. Everything else that made up the vehicles was standard production run. Actually these Ford's were "typical" in that if "someone"could be talked into investing the cost to cover the cost of slowing down the production line to install the special parts the car would be built. The early Shelby Mustangs are an example. Today the vehicles which Ford sells as the GT 500 and "Shelby" only go so far down the production line with the cars built for the general public before being removed from that line and being "Drop Shippened" maybe to another on site production line or a line somewhere else ( another city or state for example).

I didn’t know to believe him or not back then about the stainless car but after seeing this video I guess he was right. Wow .. and they said there’s a few cars missing.
