Those are beautiful! It's worth noting that those machines were almost silent (not the brakes) when they were running on the old motor generators. That whining and buzzing comes from the silicone controlled rectifiers in the much more efficient updated controllers running the motors with 25-40% less voltage at leveling speed (and idle).

It’s probably using a DC PWM drive, which is where the buzz came from while leveling

That sounds quiet likely with the older controller and the MG set the generator field supplying the current to move the cab up and down, cut out as the cab was starting to level and the leveling field to slow the cab at the landing cut in. The DC drive appears to chock the current flow at 25-40% at leveling speed instead of gradually reducing it. The DC gear-less traction machines are in beautiful condition. I've seen several videos where modernization is done and the larger DC machines are left intact. Since it can be difficult and expensive to remove and replace them. Long as they are working properly, keep them in service.

How do you get into all of these machine rooms? BEAUTIFUL Elevator Motors!!! Too bad they were obviously modded with the newer DC drives and solid state controllers, but at least they're still Ancient Otises at heart!!!
