RSI Polaris - Concept Ship Review

Күн бұрынThe RSI Polaris is one of Star Citizen’s smaller cap ships, but I happen to think small can be beautiful - and to me I think it represents something of a Goldilocks situation where it’s big enough to give a cool multicrew experience, but small enough to see regular action if you can put a crew together.
In this vid we’re going to take a deep dive into the Polaris, checkout it’s systems, weaponry and layout - and theory craft a little about potential use cases ahead of its release later this year!

I'm going to use it for exploration instead of a Carrack or Odyssey. Great scanners, med bed, fit a ship and ground vehicle. Similar size to the Carrack or Odyssey as well.

The section ''How will we use it?'' with the fleet position and the ship role is a really nice touch that I haven't seen elsewhere on other channels. It really brings it all into perspective. Good way to demark yourself!

I bought the Polaris when it first was announced because I absolutely loved the concept... I've spent years considering how I will deploy this asset in the PU and quite frankly, it appears, so far, to be a very versatile ship and lore wise; it is the first UEE Hull that was designed after the capture of a Vanduul carrier! The angular hull design and "sloping" sides is supposed to help with Vanduul ship melee attacks and breaching attacks. At present, our org plans to use this as our first capital ship and we intend to conduct patrols during events and periodic raids with it. Our org also has an Idris and Javelin but most orgs will get their Polaris before the other aforementioned capital ships so I expect to see a LOT of Polaris movement/combat after it releases.

@@Boss-Possum Ya I am seeing the Hammerhead in a great spot to be the shield for most bigger ships as she is designed for fighter suppression and to shoot down missiles and torpedoes. They will be buying my crew those round of drinks for saving their butts from another Polaris torpedo barrage 💪🏻

I’m thinking as this ship has a hold for criminals it may be well served by having 2x Hawks in the hangar bay to go bounty hunting. Cracking review LG and second time I’ve watched it now. Can’t wait for my Polaris!

I mostly play solo or with just a friend or two, so the Polaris is one of those ships that I find interesting, but not one that I'll ever want in my Hangar. That said, I had to rewind when I heard you describe the ship matrix as containing porky pies. Love it.

Oh, when I have friends online that do have the bigger ships, it is often fun to crew up and do something. I have a couple of friends with Reclaimers and those are a surprising amount of fun considering you're essentially playing power wash simulator and slo-mo Tetris.

Happy to see so many people willing to be non-pilot crew, because I am certainly not. It seems like I am in a minority, and that is GREAT news for anyone with a big ship.

I’m the leader of an org and of our 11 players only 3 (including me) actually like piloting, while the rest is preferring not to do that. This is why we are getting ourselves a Kraken, as it both has the capability to support our two fighter pilots and the ability to sustain our industrial fleet.

I‘ve always loved piloting. The bigger and more sluggish the ship the better. I am positively surprised by your findings as I‘d always expected to fight over the seat. My dream role is navigator/pilot - don‘t need to be co or cap.

I can't wait for this ship. The Galaxy was love-at-first-sight, the Polaris took longer, but I'm just as excited to this as I am for my beloved Galaxy. This ship will definitely be my daily-driver once it's out this year. It's too much dreaming to think it will be ready for Invictus, but I'm sure by CitCon/IAE 2954 it will be ready.

I was surprised when they said they would increase the size of the Polaris a bit but I didnt know it would be to the point a heavy fighter can fit in there. Seeing the Scorp come out of the Polaris is amazing to see because I own both the Polaris and Scorp. I look forward to whenever it release.

It seems like the most versatile of capital ships: Lots of cargo to bring supplies to a frontline, reinforcment if you bring a lot of ground vehicules, can punch through a siege/blockade to ressuply a cutoff force or hunt for capital ships with the size 10 torpedoes, can enforce a blockade because of the number of size 5 weapon on turrets and capital radar(can even bring a police small ship to bring things out of quantum and force them to abide by the inspection).

Have a polaris as expected to be released this year. After watching this video , got the Scorpius and Antares to use with it . Gonna be fun locking down a big ship like the 890 jump with the antares. When you demand a ransom, they will stop laughing when you point to the polaris.

The Polaris has always been my go-to dream boat for Search and Rescue along with Bounty Hunting opps. The real "Cowboy Bebop" experience with a MPUV and Anvil Hawk and a dream. We'll see if that works, or if I'll need to "downgrade" to the liberator for this, but I see the Polaris being an excellent home away from home.

My Idea for my polaris is, if I can get a dependable crew, our all around "starship enterprise" experience. it is the all-around starship. with enough punch to dissuade all but the most determined aggressors. vehicle bay, fighter hangar... what CAN'T you do with a Polaris? it's like the Carrack's big brother.

I did not know the polaris had a brig, that could be a cool addition for future of bounty hunter. Even for smaller crews you could use it as a base to hunt bounties.

Im pretty new to the game, but I’d see this ship more on the mid-backside of the fight. It’s torpedos help fighting bigger targets over distances and its ability to refuel, rearm and repair makes it a great support ship with the ability to defend itself thanks to its turrets.

There's a beer with your name on it at Bar Citizen, really interesting video. I look forward to the engineering loop in one of these, I think gelling up a regular crew is going to be a lot of fun, and a force multiplier over any scratch crew. Your point on insurance is good, there's going to be a strong incentive to preserve the ship if at all possible which brings up that repairs will be expensive, certainly any you cannot do yourself, and may well be fairly resource hungry so folk will find that the cap ships, and large non combat ships (Arrastra looking at you!) are going to have significant running costs. Those S10 torps will no doubt be a pretty penny each. A small org that doesn't have a robust income and resouce base may struggle to keep one on high availability. Lot of good points to ponder and theorycraft.

It remains to be seen if CIG can work out server meshing to the point where you can have a lot of these fully crewed larger ships in the area and not have the server go to trash. Time will tell.

It would be interesting to see how much the Polaris would be once it's flight ready. It's $750 US at the moment but I expect to jump to $900 or more, I would be very surprised if it would be $850

"Good for multicrew" You just watch me solo daily drive that baby. I'll use it for box missions and touring. I got a total of 2 ships as my whole fleet. Polaris and Reliant Tana to put in it's hangar. Need nothing else!

I think i'd like for the engineering room/area to be decreased a bit to make some additional room for cargo. Not that 200+ SCU is bad at all, but for a capital ship this size, I think we need a BIT more room for cargo.

I went through the Xitcon presentation, and while I can't commit to any weapon sizes, the side and bottom turrets are now Quad turrets.

The Polaris is the only true combat capital ship not restricted for purchase. Meaning, you can wait to get it. Also, it is an attack ship. Its main combat function is raiding. It is very bad at defending or interdiction.

I have plans to use a Polaris+scorpius as a center of a strike group, flanked by two Perseus and a medical galaxy+pisces. I think for crew sizes and amenities this will be an optimal "wolf pack" style strike team or mobile flanking group in a larger fleet. To me it seems the larger rsi ships are fitting well together for this role. For this reason I got them all in my hangar lol

Problem with these larger ships is that there aren't a lot of use cases for them. I rarely use the hammerhead or the 890, but I like the Carrack.

I believe that's what I said - he confirmed shield and cooler have been upped to Capital but beyond that I couldn't find further detail on things like the Computers / QT Drive etc.

The size Five manned turrets with only two guns should get two more guns on the manned turrets I would be fine with them being size Three or four. I also hope the repair and refueling in the hanger get buffed compared to what they said, but not really needed.

you will be able to rent a crew... but multi playing is the whole idea behind big ships. Turrets can be assigned to AI blades, but engineering, strategy positions I will not leave to AI lol. Polaris is torpedo boat, not gunboat. Just remember, torps is slow but long range

We keep throwing around the name jacking as a full sized capital ship but I don’t think the javelin is anywhere near the same class as the idris or kraken lol. It’s probably better classifies as a large or very large capital ship.

It's certainly next level (although looking at the Kraken in particular you've got to factor in a full squadron of fighter and bomber pilots to go along with the ship itself). But there's a gulf between the Polaris and the next level up.

Polaris is going to be an excellent flag ship in CSAR type missions. I just wish the hangar was a bit bigger so as to fit an Apollo Medivac inside. I plan to run mine with a fighter, C8R and Terrapin in my hangar. Hopefully we get a medical URSA soon too for the vehicle/cargo bay.

I went for the Polaris, instead of the Perseus, as I’m a torpedo boi who likes blowing up Idris and I was looking for a mothership to cruise Pyro. I’m actually wondering if I get to enjoy the Retaliator Gold standard before the Polaris arrives, as they are in the same CCU chain.

I really hope the nose turret is size 6, size 5 would be fine but I liked when the nose turret was the bigger of them all, adding to the idea of an arrowhead.

Aside from the crew requirement, the biggest argument against the Polaris for me is how costly those torpedoes are going to be. It would break me to casually throw away the cost of a light fighter with the push of a button, let alone to then see that torpedo shot down.

Doubt they'll be THAT pricy. Wouldn't make sense for a torp to cost as much as even a small fighter given they have no QT drive, no human control components, no life support, etc. They're just a big lump of explosives with an engine and guidance systems.

If you get the hits. If they cost, say, a million credits each...a single salvo would cost 4 million credits. Doubt the reclaim price on an Idris is 4 million credits. So it would cost the Polaris more to kill the Idris than it would cost to get a new one, which is ridiculous. And even that's IF all 4 hit and were sufficient to do the job. Note size 9 torps, one size down, cost 5000 credits. 5000 to a million or more for one size bigger torp is a bit of a jump.@@theMedicatedCitizen

Certainly likely to be pricey kit - for the comparison with ships though keep in mind those are going up 4-12x. I'd also be incredibly surprised if reclaim on an Idris is as little as 4m :D

Some are going up 4-12x. Some are staying put or even getting cheaper. They said they were lowering the cost of a C8R, for instance. I don't see any world where a C8R (500,000) is cheaper than a torpedo. I fully expect they'll be expensive...but comes a point where they have to take fun into account, and it's not fun going broke every time you have to rearm. I'm betting in the 100k/Each level. Painful enough not to fire them at everything, but cheap enough that it makes sense in the game world when compared to everything else. And again, Size 9 torps are currently 5k. If they increased the price on that tenfold, it'd still only be 50k. We'll see.@@LoudGuns

You either launch point blank or get Somone who is in nav mode (now that is) from a long distance away. It's easy to get people to dump all their counter measures with small sized missiles from your fighter or the size3's

Perhaps the attraction for multi crew will remain but dependant upon the Delphi (reputation) system and/or additional systems that are less lawful such as Pyro. With the current one system (Stanton) I rarely have issues manning my Reclaimer for salvage, Redeemer for Bounties etc and being in an Org will also most definitely make manning my Polaris easy. Full disclosure I do still love solo role play also.

It'll be the first ship that'll make ORGs implode. I'm looking forward to the ship. I was playing around with hanger Link, looks like you fan fit a Pisces rescue, 2 arrows and a few fury's all at the same time. Or a legionnaire turned sideways with an arrow and furys

I hope those turrets are still Dual Size 4s and not size 5, way higher fire-rate and projectile velocity to deal with fighters.

The Polaris is going to suffer "oh sh!t, it's a Polaris!" Syndrome. I feel bad for the people who think they are going to solo this. No Org is going to let a Polaris just cruise around in their territory. It has a 14 person crew for a reason.

I don't think Org Terrority is going to be that much of an issue. As well, The Polaris is a combat ship, but it is capable of a lot more. Quite a few have other plans for it.

No need for shame where maintenance costs, fuel costs, armament costs, docking/hangar fees, the cost of upgrades, insurance, ship delivery time/cost and crewing obligations will do. After their personal point of usability, all anyone is buying is day 1, in-game debt.

Ugh ... those size 10 torps will make fleet engagements with Polarises really rather boring. Both opposing Polarises will stay at maximum radar range, but out of range of each other's torps, and each fleet will bring in a mess of Retaliators and Eclipses to take out the enemy Polaris. And the moment one of the two Polarises is down, it's game over for that fleet as the remaining Polaris will then close in and start taking out all the large ships on the enemy fleets with their torps. Honestly, I would have preferred their first capital ship released would have been one that can't easily just two-shot other capital ships :/

It's a 4 shot Idris. Provided you land all of those. I believe it's going to have a nice niche as a killer, but it isn't end all be all.

Remember that in CIG's head space combat is Pacific War. This is a Japanese cruiser with a good spread of Type 92s. Get caught and its sayonara, the trick is not to get caught. We don't yet know how armour will protect and part of the lore behind the Ares range is being part of deasling with a heavy armoured ship. Ditto the ballsitc Corsair build, two in the hands of good pilots can really spoil an Idris' day.

Things shown in trailers might not be representative of game balance! More seriously though people do have a bit of a tendency to forget SC is just a game and as such we'll see plenty of balancing and rebalancing along the way - torpedoes too powerful? Make them slower etc.

I think guessing gun size should be put on hold since they are redoing the gimbal system and adding them to most of the mounts and turrets. Possible these are size 5, I did hear these was gimbaled and that would mean now they might be size 5 after the change?

Yeah I very much took the approach of “this is how many turrets there are, this is what the data says, but basically wait and see”.
