There’s one detail in Louis’s backstory that really clinched his character for me, and the anime doesn’t convey it super well: it’s when he turns around and looks Oguma dead in the eye before holding the knife to his throat. To me it makes the scene read totally differently: in the anime, he’s doing it to avoid being eaten. In the manga, he’s doing it to defy Oguma. It’s not just an act of desperation, it’s a defiant ‘fuck you’ to him specifically for putting him into that sick scenario. And THAT’S what sells Louis’s character, for both Oguma and the reader. It’s his willingness to spit in his face, his refusal to be a pawn that convinces Oguma that he has what it takes to become the head of his conglomerate someday.

You don't forget trauma. You come to grips with it, learn how to live with it, and then move past it, making it a part of your past, instead of your defining moment.

Beastars is incredible but its really underappreciated. Legosi's character depth and growth throughout the show is something not many understand. This anime is easily one of the best of last year

That scene where Legosi says "i'll take Haru from you" after his fight with Louis seriously hits me much harder when you pointed out that Haru is the only person that he can be himself around. I didn't catch this character trait of Louis' (somehow) when I first watched Beastars and its messed up to think he is going to lose his only sense of comfortability (Haru) to a person he somewhat despises due to his own pride. Thank you for pointing this out to me because I had a "this is a genius scene" realization

Honestly, Loius and Legosi are probably my favorite pair of foil characters because it feels so by the books perfect, but also strangely unique, yet still completely understandable. I don't feel like I have to make any forced leaps or connections to understand why the author wrote them this why, or rather why they as people are this way. Boiling down to how their differences opposed them, before uniting them in their respect for what the other has which they themselves wish they could feel, shows how their growth doesn't force them into one single "right" path other shows like to put character development down. They're both struggling and learning from each other, butting heads because they're people, not one dimensional characters meant to answer a single question the author laid out. It's also such a good love triangle since it doesn't exist just to give 2 characters reasons to fight after coming to an understanding because pretty girl and mah ships. When they find out the other also likes Haru, it's damaging to their sense of self and happiness as one of their huge similarities is due to their masks and perceptions of themselves. Yeah, she's a nice cute girl and the protagonists gets butterflies thinking about her, but she's her own person as well, and her experiences let her see something others can't, or at least haven't yet, as well as be something more to them than 1st pick for love interests because she's the female lead.

I feel generic always giving the same praise each time I watch a video of yours over a series I have seen but...the quality is just always there and I can't help but praise it. Louis is such a fantastic character and the way he and Legoshi play off one another is great. Thank you very much for sharing the manga only scenes involving Louis and Bill, as an anime only fan that added quite a bit and was very nice to learn

"Louis will never be separated by the terrified number 4 he was as a child" *SPOILERS* *SPOILERS* Wow, this quote makes what happens between him and Legosi later in the manga even more powerful. He literally gets separated from that branding and is able to be his most vulnerable self thanks to Legosi.

It's really odd how they cut out the Bill gun scene in the anime, and I still can't really understand it. I just hope they leave everything intact for season 2 because that's where Louis gets most of his development I've spent years thinking about these characters and their motivations, but I never made the connection that Louis lashing out at Legosi is a form of self hatred. It's added yet more depth to Louis, who I consider possibly the strongest character in Beastars from a writing standpoint

Beautiful video, choice of clips, and talking about something that I've always wanted to see in a Louis analysis (going into detail about how his response to his trauma was trying to detach himself from that identity altogether and the significance of his bond with Legosi.) I always loved the choice of animal being used to depict Louis since whenever people think of the word fawn colloquially, it's almost always about weakness and helplessness. I think it was great mentioning how he despises being viewed that way so acts out with aggression and creates this infallible persona that is still at the root born from his insecurities and his reaction to his traumatic past. I'm kind of rehashing what was already said, but you put into words why Louis is a character I love so much. They handle his vulnerability so well to the point that you feel bad pitying him, because he is staunchly against that and his friendship with the boy Legosi is just perfect given who they are. Anyways, had to leave a tip in the jar for this one!

I appreciate your Character Analysis for Louis, I can see why he's one of the most popular characters in Beastars, he's got quite alot of depth to him and he makes some good growth throughout the story. My opinion of Louis may change as the story progresses, but as of halfway through the story (up to the end of Season 2 of the anime)...I just cannot bring myself to like Louis. Why? ...Louis is an asshole. He is quick to judge others and slow to change/update his views and feelings of other people. He takes an immediate dislike to Legosi and uses his shy, introverted nature as a reason to despise and distrust him. Legosi is constantly polite, loyal and shows respect and admiration to Louis to a sychophantic degree...And Lousi repays this with disgust and disrespect. Even after they supposedly become friends he continues to treat Legosi like shit. Rather than bring a gun along to ensure he survives the fight with Riz...He forces Legosi to eat his leg and doom him to becoming a devourer and a criminal. And we're supposed to see them as friends? Bullshit. He strings Haru along for an extended period of time, uses her for comfort, companionship, and sex...And he refuses to reciprocate her feelings. I know long-term they cannot be together, but that's no excuse to keep someone's bond hostage while taking advantage of their feelings for you. He has the gall to get angry at Legosi for pursuing Haru when he stubbornly refuses to love her back. You can love someone and still accept you cannot be together forever. Then he leaves her for dead when she is kidnapped and folds easily to pressure from the mayor. It's convenient when he seeks to benefit greatly from keeping his mouth shut. Fuck Louis. I know he goes after her later, BUT Louis makes it clear he does this for HIMSELF, because he refuses to be a pawn for Adults any longer. If not for Legosi he would have arrived too late to save Haru and almost definitely been killed and devoured like her. Then when he becomes the Shishigumi boss he constantly behaves aloof, antagonistic and defensive around them. I understand he is afraid of them and he feels the need to keep up this act of strength, but it's very shitty when Ibuki reaches out to Louis and he reacts with disgust and ungratefulness. Louis is an asshole. Later on he allows his goons to beat Legosi to a pulp because he assumes Legosi bought and ate meat...Nevermind that makes him a hypocrite for eating meat to keep up appearances. He never tries to understand Legosi and passes judgement from seeing him merely buying meat. Nevermind earlier he taunted Legosi with the prospect of eating one of his legs. Which he then later forces him to do. We're supposed to see their friendship grow through the Murder Solution Arc..But it happens extremely fast and I just don't accept that Louis suddenly cares about Legosi with very little positive change in their knowing eachother. I know for alot of people Louis' traumatic past and his constant struggle with himself makes him sympathetic...But I feel Paru uses this sympathetic past as a crutch to try and make us like Louis. If Louis' past as a child raised for slaughter did not exist, he would be extremely unlikable and rightfully so. You need to also give a character some 'Pet the Dog' moments to help them remain sympathetic, a sad backstory isn't enough when they consistent act like an asshole who only cares about themselves. Even when Louis does 'nice' things (like saving Legosi from Bill, saving Legosi and Haru from the Chief Lion, and saving Legosi from Riz) he ALWAYS has an ulterior motive, and it's ALWAYS a self-serving one. He stopped the stage fight because it would have caused a panic, and he hated them getting blood on HIS stage. He killed the Chief Lion to get back at the Back Alley Market for raising him for slaughter, seeing the Chief Lion as a symbol of that. Then he forces Legosi to eat his leg to be rid of his cursed past. Louis is not a good person and no amount of him crying or feeling sorry for himself will make me like him. Maybe he gets better post-Murder Solution Arc, but I think it's a BIG ask for me to have to wait over half of the way into a story to decide I like a character who spent the first half actively doing things that make me despise them. Sorry for the rant, I just really hate how much popularity and love Louis gets when he's consistently been a shitty character. He's well written, but that's not the same as being likable. I'm sure I'll get downvoted by the legions of Louis stans, but I had to say my piece.

I am still of the opinion that Louis is every bit as bat-shit crazy as Melon is -- the only difference being, Louis isn't enjoying it. Seems to me that Louis speaks mainly through the language of confrontation: He WANTS everyone to challenge him, so that he can show his superiority by overcoming them. When someone won't challenge him (someone like Legosi), Louis goads them until they finally do, because literally the only language he can speak is that of conflict. Still, something in the back of his mind tells him that this path is a lonely, hopeless one... that's why Haru senses such great sadness in him.

around 16 minutes in you talk about Louis' inner conflict on where he wants to go in life. **MANGA SPOILERS** The choice he made (was forced into) was being the head of the Shishigumi, which believe it or not, he actually enjoys quite a bit. It gives Louis the power he wants, with no red tape. Also being the head of the Shishigumi means that he has control over the Black Market (excluding things like the Dokugumi and Inarigumi). Because of this, he feels like he finally has control over his past. Good Video!

Please consider using the dubbed version if they are available when making video essays. Many people treat KZfaq video essays as a form of podcast, listening to them while doing busy work around the house. Having the audio from the show play in English makes the listening experience much more enjoyable when you are not able to view the screen.

Pretty good analysis video on Louis overall though I would disagree with some parts at the end. Possible spoilers ahead for anyone who haven't read the manga or watched the end of beastars season 1: I do agree with you about the statement that Louis wishes to seek his own path instead of one that's already laid out for him, but only where the manga is at right now. The Louis at the end of the anime's first season has more of less given up on the possibility of a third option and making changes in society. He even throws away his pride by wanting the shishigumi to eat him. This doesn't last for long but even afterwards in the subsequent manga chapters he resigns himself to being unable to change society and instead tries to maintain the status quo. I get wanting to stick to the anime as much as possible but I think it would've be good to talk more about what happens to Louis in the manga chapters after season 1 to better strengthen your viewpoint. Still a pretty good video overall.

For context on why the number 4 is considered unlucky in Japanese culture: In Japanese, the kanji for 4 is 四 and can be read two ways: よん (yon) and し (shi). Now, yon doesn't carry any negative meaning on its own, which for some, makes it the preferable way to say 4. However, shi can mean a few different things. The most important of which is that shi is the most common reading of the kanji 死, which means death. For that reason, it is considered an unlucky number. It really puts into perspective the significance of "shi" being eternally marked on Louis' foot. It was his curse. His condemnation to death. Also, most of you are probably familiar with 死 without even knowing it! It's the kanji for the verb 死ぬ (shinu), which means "to die." Conjugated in the non-past progressive form, it's 死んでいる (shindeiru) which means to be dying or to be dead. The more you know!

I have some issues with your characterization of Louis especially near the end. that was not a way forward, it was a glorified attempt at suicide that he had no intention of surviving. louis had completely lost it and had spiraled into nihilism he wasn't trying another way he had completely given up.
