Louise, this video couldn't have come at a better time. I've been a doctor for 20 years and last month finally admitted to myself that I'm not half and want a creative career. It's terrifying at the age of 45 to consider giving up everything and starting again but also exciting. Your story gives me hope so thank you.

Ours is a 74 year old grandpapa with an OWN house on the promenade where he has his admission room. Works 3 days a week. We asked why does he still work, in France u go at 62, he said why not. Why not indeed

I used to be a pharmacist . I retired 5 years ago , moved in a small town where my husband can work from home . I’m 55 years old and it’s the first time that I feel that I can do what I truly love: paint, taking care of my cats and chickens and work in my garden. And I really love to watch you paint. Most of the time we don’t love the sound of our voice but I have to say that I find the sound of your voice very relaxing and it helps me focussing on my painting when I follow your Skillshare’s class. Have a lovely time painting!

never too late even if you have to wait until you retire. I got sick and retired at 50, was lucky enough to get a disability pension and then my life actually really began. Did I have lots of money? NO! Did I have a mortgage? Yes! I lived in a small country town in Western Australia, I hated it. It took us 6 years to sell our house.. because if I didn't like it why would anyone else want to live there??? Then we did sell our house..no mortgage. Yey!! We bought a nice 2nd hand car - which we couldn't afford before we sold. Then moved to a lovely town where we couldn't afford to buy but did get a rental which takes 1 whole pension...but I live where I cant afford and we live simply and I paint, I read and paint some more.. I don't even have my beloved garden any more (I have lots of pots) and we cant have pets but I can paint. Im now 70 and life has begun..Never say never!! Its not necessarily about everything you have its about friends, family, each other and what you can do right now. Nobody will thank you when you are dead for leaving them a half paid for house in an area they dont want to live in. I think kids today make more than we ever did and really its up to them to make their own lives and their own mistakes, YOU have to live yours. Good luck,

74 here, and retired from medicine a few month before Covid hit. Although I am not interested in a new career per se, after the exacting work of diagnostic skin pathology, in reality the study of cellular structure and function, with my free time, I re-discovered a lost creative drive within me; my love of colors led me into making art quilts and learning watercolor painting. I already knew how to sew, and quilting (not the typical patchwork/ geometric type) but collage, applique, paper piecing "art quilts" using batik fabrics came to me almost too easily. I wanted something more challenging, and I found it in one of your videos. I am now consumed with learning this very difficult beautiful art form. Of course, I hope to eventually figure out a way of incorporating watercolor painting into one of my quilts. I thank you so much for introducing me to this medium. I forget time when I am painting. And I love your grace, your humble teaching style, all of your art, and your distinctive lovely voice too! When I hear you at the start of a video, I smile, relax, and know I will enjoy the next 20-30 minutes of whatever you do or say.

I am 42 years old and I think that I now have the opportunity to get to my dream job, although there is not enough time with three children. Thanks for your lessons. I never thought that watercolor would excite me so much; it always seemed to me something unattainable. Previously, I was interested in interior design, painted toys with gouache, and studied graphic design. At school everyone thought that I would go to study as an artist, but I went to study as an economist. I saw your lessons on KZfaq. Drawing pictures with my hands is exactly what I need. I hope that everything will work out for me.

Louise, loved this video, thank you for sharing your journey, and for your vulnerability in growing as an artist. About your voice: I am a retired professional classical artist/opera singer from Ontario Canada. I spent the last 33 years also teaching at University and College level, classical and music theater. I have a degree in vocal pedagogy and performance. Your voice is SO soothing, calming, relaxing, and very pretty and dainty to listen to. I find it meditative, and you are my favorite artist both on Patreon and youtube to follow. Voices can be annoying/grating when they have a lot of "twang" or nasality, or are too loud etc. Yours has none of these, it possesses a perfectly balanced tonal quality/timbre. Take it from the pro girl, it's a lovely lovely voice! AND know that many hate the sound of their recorded voice....it's a thing, lol (myself included). But you have a bit of "tonal dismorphia" lol, going on. Your voice is a sound I could listen to for hours, and I don't say that about many voices, having worked for over 33 years with thousands of students, and fellow artists. Your art work is gorgeous, I'm glad you found your way to a full time career in the art world. *I'm a truth speaker, and never compliment or BS anyone. Just so you know! hugs from Windsor ONtario

The content creators like you are prime examples of how one person can make a positive difference in the lives of so many. So many have been excited, thrilled and inspired by your teachings and your story! Thanks ever so much for sharing your journey. I have listened to some other artists stories on YT (e.g. Emily Olson and Michele Weber) and am cheering them on every step of the way. Making videos is something I have not tried, but it is very time consuming and labor intense. The average viewer likely has no idea how much time, effort, editing and love goes into each video. It takes hours of work and editing to produce even a short, quality video. Arts and languages were my first choice for a career, but like so many, I had to choose where I could make a living. So I was a doctor for thirty years! And, realistically, not many have your talent. Your voice is so pleasant and soothing, and your diction is excellent. Your delivery is a desirable speed, as many speak too quickly in an attempt to convey more information. Not to mention you are very attractive with excellent posture! 🥰

I can't find whatever it is about your voice that you don't like, I've listened with a hat on, standing near to my PC, sitting at a distance, from another room and even with a musical accompaniment, I stood over here and over there, but all I seem to hear is the inspiration to aspire....

Thank you Ms. Louise, I was drawn to the video by the talent displayed on the thumbnail but I became a subscriber because of your story and passion conveyed in this video. I am inspired by your journey as a young man living in Florida, wanting to risk it all and go into the creative field to use my talents, to plan a way to get to that point, like you and quit my job. It will happen. Much success and God bless to you! P.S. your voice if you haven't already read with the other comments, is soothing, familiar, and therapeutic. You seriously give me a sense of warmth, people would pay to hear your voice dubbed over reading material!

Louise I am so happy you took the path you did and we are able to watch you here as you share your skills & experiences with us. I sit here in my little cottage here in West Australia, sharing the galahs, Kookaburras, Kangaroos, wildlife & creatures that you have there. I dont have your skills in speaking or teaching, I dont have your skills in watercolour techniques and probably never will, but you let me put those photos of the birds & creatures down onto paper with better confidence than I had 3 years ago, and thats because your videos have given me so much. I hope you appreciate just how much you have helped us out here. Im retired & didn’t start back into watercolour until I ended my professional career, I am happy to spend my spare hours knowing how to paint the feathers of a galah better or one of the roses my husband grows for me. Now if I was younger….well, that might be another story. I am so grateful you listened to Dom as I am sure many of us here are. I love your videos Denise , Ive learned so much from you so … thank you so much & thank you Dom for encouraging your lovely wife. Now what are you painting next Denise? And I love your Kookaburra, hes beautiful.

Wow... I personally am glad that not only did you pursue it, but that your husband supported it. I've ALWAYS doodled and sketched along with a bit of ink work, but only within the last few years have I leaned into watercolor. I've painted just stuff, along with holiday and birthday cards and such, and It has been fun! Although very (very) late in the game for me, I have started envisioning perhaps making something of it all. That aside, your work is lovely and your lessons have helped me a great deal. I too cringe to hear my voice played back to me, "Who is that geek!... Oh... it's me." Thank you so much for your videos and lessons!

I have watched many times and love listening to you. I didn’t start my painting journey until I was in my 50s I also paint in watercolour and found after a short time people were buying my paintings and I was also winning awards. I wish I had been younger but I also had another business to run so it wasn’t until I sold that business that I started painting. I have moved from Melbourne to Yamba on the N.S.W. Coast. I’m still painting and teaching when asked, I must get a website and start showing my paintings and prints on social media. You have given me the push I needed. I loved listening to your story and your voice is so pleasant to listen to that’s why I have your u tub videos. ❤thanks cheers Jan hudson

Oh no way, I have that book you co-authored, had no idea! Wow! This video is really inspiring… I’m 32 and absolutely miserable with my retail job (the people I work with are nice but the actual job is so repetitive and mundane and a lot of customers treat me like I’m something on the bottom of their shoe even though I do my best to be kind and polite and never pressure them to buy anything). I have a second job too in the medical field which I love but my heart has always been drawn to art. I think this was my sign to finally start my art business on the side and eventually quit retail.

When you look at the lives of all the greatest artists, even from centuries ago, they all had one thing in common - they all struggled for years to make a living with their art. Success is hard fought, and the praise more highly valued when blood, sweat and tears have been shed in it's pursuit. I somehow believe that in the future, your paintings will hang alongside those of Van Gogh, Matise, Turner, Da Vinci and Monet in museums all around the world, and even if like other artist, it is not within your lifetime, your legacy of beautiful, timeless art, will live on.

Wow. Thank you for posting this! In years past, I experienced the same thing where co workers, when they saw my artwork, questioned why I wasn't working as an artist instead?! So many people said that to me for years and years. I too am shy about videoing, talking about my work, and hearing my voice- argh! I could totally relate! But I actually want to create video content. I guess I always feel that there are a gazillion other better artists that have more interesting content. I am a full time homeschooling mom and it's tricky to carve out time to draw or paint. I think the thing that stops me most is fear. I want to have success as an artist and our family could really use the income. I'm just not sure how to start. By the way, I love that your husband helps you film and helps to prompt you. The bloopers at the end were so cute!😂♥️

Similar story here! Thank you for sharing your story. I have been told at a young age I'm not good enough and artists can't make a living, so I didn't even try but I always wondered. Things really changed after having my first child, especially after maternity leave and the price for full-time nursery just wasn't worth me going to work. Recently, I decided to quit my job to look after my little human and try pivoting my career & yourube channel sharing my progress on becoming an author-illustrator one day.. whether it'll happen, I don't know, but at least I can say I'm giving a damn good whack at it! I currently teach private music lessons to advanced students, but decided a while back to merge into a visual arts career. Knowing it would take lots of ‘brush time’ I set out to paint several hours a day. As a result I developed De Quervain’s tendinitis. 😫That is something I never saw coming as I have never had any sort of physical issues like that.
