Hope you are feeling better. Arms tightly around. I am 75 and have done various kinds of art in my life. When I retired from teaching Humanities, I promised myself I would learn to paint. I had been through sooooooooo many videos but none can touch the kind of advice you give. As a teacher, I had to reframe my knowledge for those who were beginners. You do that in painting and really! show us the process and the tips that would have taken years to figure out. Thank you thank you thank you for your thoughtfulness.I can't begin to express how grateful I am for your videos and your presence.

Yes clean palette, I agree! I used to think I don’t want to waste paint so I didn’t clean my palette. However after a while of trying to find a clean space and cleaning small areas on my messy palette I just decided to clean the whole palette. Clean palette = fresh start, clear mind, and avoids muddy/contaminated pigments. Trying to find a clean space on a palette was cluttering my mind and wasting my time.

I used to think I had to clean my palette all the time and discovered I don't need to clean the blues or the greys because I always use the same mixes. (greens = PY97 + PB29; greys = burnt sienna + PB29). I do clean some areas of my palette but never the greens or greys. I use a limited palette (sometimes only 4 colors- PY97, PB29, burnt sienna, quin rose). I'm OCD, so it was a hard habit to break. 😊

I used to be petrified mixing my greens when I started with watercolor... Bought green in every shade I could find 🥲 Recently, I finally realised the potential and rid of the fear, I'm so sad I didn't just focus on the yellow blue and reds instead haha I'm experimenting mixing with the greens to make them a lot more natural but I have loooots of green to work through 😅 Live and learn I guess!!! Thank you Louise for the great tips!❤

Love the Steven Quiller palette! That’s what I use plus a little dish if my painting is larger and I save my dried paint. I keep( usually ha) my mixes separated on my palette but sometimes I just need to wipe the area that sneaks over to another color. I really appreciate that you mentioned the technique of charging the wash or adding in while wet, it creates some of the most spontaneous beautiful backgrounds and just the surprises that make us chuckle. I do a lot of botanicals but still keep the general common colors and I do love Winsor and Newton agua color. Holy cow it mixes beautifully and I mix it with my greens especially if a cooler on is needed. I have purchased a few Qor paints lately to compare. WN still has in my opinion the best and closest lightfast color to indigo in case anyone wanted to test 7 brands. What can I say , you are a dear and your reminders are always wonderful for this artist.😊

I bought WN indigo for workshop because instructor had it and color worked best. If only they used same formulation tube and pans. Normally use DS/m Graham because they rewet super easily.

I'm thankful you are mixing your colors. You have always painted stunning works of art but the addition of mixed colors really adds a dimension that adds depth. The most valuable class I ever took online was Jane Blundell's Mastering Watercolour course. Not only did she use a limited palette, but the course had students painting mixing charts while they explored different triads. Without even knowing it, you were connected with color theory and harmony, all while learning various watercolor techniques. There is something amazing about Aussie instructors. You and Jane have been amazing guides through my watercolor journey. I appreciate you both. Now I know exactly which colors to mix to obtain the color I want, and if it's a color I don't mix all the time, all I have to do is break out my trusty mixing carts I painted during class.

BTW, it was so smart to have Dom paint using your instruction. I was a realtor for many years and there is nothing that taught me more about what my clients went through than moving. Every realtor should be required to move every 3 years to humble them to the process. Hats off to Dom! Your family ROCKS!

These are invaluable tips as always. My favorite is not to overblend because it is so much more interesting to have the variations. I usually "cheat" with sap or hooker's green and add other colors to them (but never use straight from the tube). You've inspired me to create my yellow/blue color chart. Side note - this blouse looks spectacular on you! The blue is incredible and lights up your skin and face beautifully.

Hello Louise. Enjoying this video is an understatement for me. This is such an educational, informative, and detailed presentation. Just excellent on all levels. I have been collecting supplies and watvhing videos for quite a while, without actually starting. As a retired educator I want to learn as much as I can first. I do have an interest and background of doing a lot acrylic painting years ago. Many, many different arts and crafts starting at a very young age. Now I finally want to add watercolor to the list. Having watched already, many helpful watercolor tutorials on paint and mixing, I feel that yours is superior, and I am so appreciative that I found your site. (I happily subscribed.)
