In the director’s commentary, they said they had a storyline where Mr. Bean’s character was supposed to be an angel of some sort. And that’s why he showed up randomly throughout the movie and intervened in the ways he did. But they did away with the supernatural aspect of it at the end.

I actually see the story about the family man cheating as being about the unravelling of the love story between the married couple, not the "love" between him and his secretary. It's interesting how when Garrick mentioned that actors don't kiss until cameras are rolling, it got me thinking... for the past year I fell into the world of Thai BL and Taiwanese BL dramas, and they do intimacy training/camps with the actors. And yes, they kiss before filming, which makes a huge difference. You can tell which actors hate each other, and which respect each other, and one pair full-on said "yeah we're dating now, what of it?" Then you look at other media, sometimes I think they would benefit from this training. As you can tell which actors are truly comfortable with the others.

35:39 I think someone with cheating habits will cheat wether they are in a monogamous or open relationship. Society will just be more likely to give the cheater a pass and not feel as bad (perhaps even blame) the non-cheating main partner for being in an open relationship.

I think one thing to keep in mind about the Prime Minister's speech scene was that Love Actually released in 2003, just months after British Parliament approved the UK's participation in the invasion of Iraq, against the wishes of the majority of the British public at the time. Most felt like the UK was America's lap dog in that era (and to this day) and so having this film where a British PM actually stands up to the US President was a lot more impactful with that context.

Disagree Kelsey, open relationships don't solve everything. People who cheat will cheat regardless, people who are stone cold monogamous won't change their minds that easily; if one person isn't on board it'll be a resentful half-ass attempt. And there's hella inclusivity issues surrounding the ENM community that I won't get into.

Kelsey is so right but that’s why I love this movie. People are stupid, it’s reality and it makes us angry then happy then sad, and we feel all the emotions. Great movie.

Watch About A Boy next year for Christmas! It’s great and terrible, has themes of depression and mental health problems, themes of family and connectivity. Hugh grant’s character is more douchey and yet more likeable than his love actually character. And Toni collette is phenomenal. Please please please!

Alan Rickman is literally getting Emma Thompson/his secretary a Christmas present! How is it not a Christmas film?

I love this movie, but I 100% agree with all the criticisms. I think the issue becomes when people use movies/cinema to dictate how they see the world. A movie can have problematic plot lines like this to make it entertaining, and just because it's entertaining, doesn't mean it should be done in real life. Most rom coms are not good examples of actual loving relationships. I think whenever people conflate the two, there's a recipe for disaster.

Y’all should watch while you were sleeping and decide if it’s a Christmas movie or not 😊
