Fall is my favorite time of year because it is soup season! At least that is why I tell my family when they ask why we are having soup for the fourth time this week! I love soup, so easy, so nutritious and it can even be lower calorie and no one feels like I've got them on a diet!

Watched the video and said, "my final leftovers from a roasted chicken"; my vet retired and she is raising chickens now.... Did not have butter beans except dried (too much work). Your uncle will be really rolling over my version, but Brunswick Stew was whatever you had...so cannellini beans it was. Chicken broth from that roasted chicken. Bacon and onions; had some of the small sweet peppers (why not). No celery salt, but chopped up some celery. Then added diced tomatoes (what I had), a can of corn and the last of my okra. The W sauce, just a bit of liquid smoke, the chicken and then for BBQ sauce a bit of my Carolina (that's North) vinegar and red pepper sauce. It is still simmering on the stove, but my is the broth tasty. You were right about the liquid smoke--just a bit. Think I'll make some cornbread to go w/ it tonight for dinner. It is cold an rainy here in northern WV today....perfect stew weather.

My mother got married in 1956 and as a wedding present received a Joy of cooking cookbook from that time.. Many of the dishes within that cookbook are very complex. Not a complex dish but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Corned Beef and cabbage with Potatoes and carrots. The Joy of cooking cookbook had a suggestion of making cornmeal dumplings as a compliment to the corned beef and cabbage meal. I Loved it. I only mean this from a good place a lot of the millennials and younger people do not like very complex meals but with your intelligence and years of cooking you might be able to make some of these dishes from that cookbook easy, convenient, and the same. I would buy that cook book!!! 😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁

It appears to have originated in Colonial Times, so it's an East Coast thing, being prominent in the Southern States, and rural areas. Originally it was mostly game animals. Rabbit, squirrel. Read about it on Wikipedia.

Hi Paula. Once again, a great recipe which I can’t wait to try! (BTW, your delicious shrimp Creole slow cooker recipe is now a staple in our house). One quick thing about the smoky taste. I use homemade chicken broth in my soups and stews that have been made with a chicken that’s been smoked in my smoker. So, the broth is infused with the taste of hickory, mesquite, and cherry wood chips. Can’t wait to use it in this recipe! Thank you!

I live in southern VA, just a few counties over from Brunswick County, VA …where claims are deeply made for the origins of the tradition. We always add kernel corn along with the baby green butter beans. Many churches, fire departments, VFW lodges etc. hold “ stews” and sell it fir fund raising….huge outdoor kettles and a long process. Used to contain squirrel or rabbit but now chicken is the usual. No bbq sauce that I know if but it does have that sweet kick from the ingredients they use. I love a smaller stovetop version!

She's right it usually takes a long time to cook the real brunswick stew. I've never seen anyone cook the hog head though. 😳😁 We used pork , beef and chicken. Then add tomatoes, potatoes ( cut up into small pieces so they'll fall apart faster) , corn and we make our on BBQ sauce, but ya don't have to. A lot folks love chicken stew and I like that too, but I'd rather have BBQ and brunswick stew when it starts to get colder outside. I'm going to save this recipe cause I want to try it. A quicker way that's for sure. 😉😊🍂🍁🌻🌼👍❤

@@stacey5925 Kind of. I mean calcium chloride is in everything practically. There are a lot of things I avoid, I just don't see it as a major concern. Then again, I don't eat tofu or drink either. I do bottled water as we are on high iron with our well. Use the five gallon type with a dispenser or filter it through a Berkey filter. I love Brunswick stew, but am diabetic so have to find a way around in this recipe. Which would exclude any corn and lima beans or, at least limit them. BBQ sauce I could make or use G Hughes.
@stacey5925
@stacey5925 2 жыл бұрын
@@rhiahlMT Yes, I agree, it's probably in many of the foods, canned items, etc. I was just saying that Cal. Chl. is the reason why canned diced tomatoes don't break down in the cooking process. I think a lot of canned items are so over processed and mushy, not to mention salty. I much prefer frozen veggies, with limited added ingredients.
@rhiahlMT
@rhiahlMT 2 жыл бұрын
@@stacey5925 I've canned vegetables all my life. I never added salt to any of them much to my grandmother's dismay. With the kids grown, the two left at home cook their own meals because of work schedules. I just buy frozen vegetables or fresh. Being diabetic, I tend to stick to broccoli, which I love. I still try to can green beans though. I just don't like them frozen. Things are really going up in price. I've put the two here on notice. We are all going to be here one day next week. The big freezer needs a clean out. Hopefully, things will go on sale as usual next month and we'll stock up.
