Many grandmothers raise their grandchildren. That wasn’t the case with my life. My grandma on my dad’s side had 11 children with her Irish-Catholic husband. She was Mexican-Indian and I looked forward to visiting her every Christmas, because she loved to bake pies. I loved her mincemeat pie! She was a great cook and I wish I learned more from her. My husband had a branding this year, so I fed my bunch of cows and went to church on my own this Mother's Day. Couldn't skip church because it was his day to open up the service with scripture and prayer, so I had to do that for him! LOL No matter..... I took myself shopping for flowers to plant and took myself out to KFC.... YUM!! (Four kids: 29,36,40,43) I have never been one of those moms who gush over sweet, sentimental Mother's Day cards... I just have a wild hair personality I guess? But all I need is a text from the kids and I am FINE! But if you can find a wild and crazy snarky card..... LOVE those!! The great thing for me is that age 60, both my husband and I still have BOTH of our parents still alive, still on their own and doing well. We have few if any, friends who haven't lost one or both sets of parents, so I can imagine how hard it was for you and your brother to lose both so young! We both had great, God fearing parents who raised us, and my husband's parents who gave us a start in the ranching business 32 years ago, in which we are successfully managing on our own today. I grew up a farmers daughter, and I have always known if you don't have someone carry you for the first several years to get you a start, it is nearly impossible to make a go of either farming or ranching today. We have been truly blessed.

What a wonderful tribute to your Grandmother. I often look back at raising my children as a single, poor Mom of 3 now grown children. I now am the Grandmother of 10.5 (.5 is coming for Christmas). I thank you for this message! My boy and girls and grand kids were here with me today! It was a great day even though I did my usual, "mothering" dishes, mopping, vacuuming and cleaning, after they left!! That's what we do! Moms wear lots of hats! One sad thing was not having my third child here, he won't speak to us, he's very mad at his family. Even at 41 years old he's still my boy and I miss him so. As a mom, I will work on changing this.
