Sam Laidlow has become somewhat of a contentious character over the past year.
His rise has been swift, albeit born from years of dedication having entered his first triathlon at the age of four. Trained by his father from the French countryside, Sam rose to acclaim during the 2022 season after a top 10 finish in St George at the World Championships and a 4th place finish at the PTO Canadian Open.
At the Collins Cup, temperatures rose as Laidlow clashed with Team US star Sam Long ahead of their matchup with Lionel Sanders but it would be the latter two who enjoyed success, Sanders beating Long in a sprint finish whilst Laidlow suffered with cramps having led the first half of the race.
However, the failure only spurred Sam on and his subsequent performances at the PTO US Open (4th) and ultimately his inspiring lone front running (and swimming/riding) approach at Kona, where he finished second only to Norwegian superstar Gustav Iden, really proved he has what it takes to be one of the very best.
For Sam, though, it's not just about winning races. He wants to leave a lasting legacy on the sport and the world by being himself. One thing is for certain, love him or hate him, you can't ignore him.

Love someone who can be unapologetically themselves. The sport needs more Sam Laidlows - hope he continues to go from strength to strength 👍

Great life he has. He has my back. He's so lucky to have family support. Every sport I tried and was good at my parents hated. Golf was hard because they wouldn't buy me clubs, I eventually got a 2 handicap at 21. But unfortunately the 12 year journey to get there broke me. I quit at 22 yo. Running was/is my other passion. But again they would not encourage me. I was always good at running so I kept af it. At 46 yo now, I'm better/faster than ever. I had a car but preferred cycling everywhere, they could understand that. My parents are not bad people, but are narrow minded. So if anyone out there has a passion for something, NEVER GIVE UP regardless of the walls you have to jump. You are the one who has the ability. Go after you dream.

My dad has similar experience with his parents. So he did what he can to make our journey in sport possible. I didn't appreciated it enough when I was younger (his military approach wasn't the softest) but now I really appreciate his help and support in this area.

What a relief to have SL on the top at the moment. his family and calmness are a contributing factor to his success. no trashy, idiotic motivational crap with babies and YoYo Yo. just a good bloke who loves to train.

As far as I'm concerned it's people like Sam and others that keep triathlon exciting. And I also like some smack talk, the fact that people hate Sam is proof that he's good because nobody bothers hating someone if they suck

Great athlete with an enormous career ahead of him as his kona performance proves. However his lack of humility last year made him a target which should be a lesson - for anyone. Top boy but reign in the big boy chat until you are one - as I have no doubt you will be.

Love comes from God, or the wholly spirit:) so if you hate him, maybe take a closer look at your spirit:) I love you Sam, I am a dream liver:) going to have a big race in few years, epic one, like one you will only find in dreams,,,trick is, or secret is to make you dream reality,,,I love the swim:) been biking since 13, race will be when I am 55, currently 51 years young, getting younger every day, but,,,really love your spirit, and truly that what I love about this sport, its like a sword fight, with out the swords,,,keep up the epic good:) will be watching, I have decided becoming a pro tri athlete is not my dream, but do consider myself a pro youtube watcher:) so my racing name is youtube man, as I get all my powers from youtube videos, we are in a special dream world my friend, and just like my dream, your dream, think most important, keep talking dreams, as maybe the best blessing is we get everyone living their dreams, and what a world this could be, or lets say will be, when I started my dream, win hawii ironman, there were many people on my side, and many not, now both helped show me the way, one said I would be to old, at 51, best shape of my life, one said would not have the money, I am the best daytrader I have ever been, so as they say, dont listen to the naysayers, I say, no listen to them, prove them wrong:) and its like a dream come ture, big race, will becallled respect for life, will be in santa Cruz, CA,,,will be a long course, will have a 33 million dollar prize pool, will be praying to see you there,,,dream on,!!!your new fan youtube man:)
