This 1984 documentary provides a fascinating account of the lives of the former King Edward VIII and the American divorcée for whom he gave up the British throne in 1936. The Duke died in 1972 but the Duchess lived on until 1986, two years after this programme was transmitted.

England might not have made it through the war....or, it might have had some seriously damaging upheavals... had the Duke not abdicated. He wasn't the leader his niece turned out to be. It's always going to be a weird little fairy tale that has some people wanting a love story and others arguing about incompetency. Who knows?

Poor Elizabeth, and she just wanted to be a Navy man's wife a little bit longer. Or a country girl, aristocratic with her horses. But she knew what had to be done at the age of 27. It became her turn. And God has granted her a long life. And she will go down in the history books as the longest living British monarch. Her story and that of her father and uncle will be told time and time again.

Duke of Windsor was unhappy with his responsibilities as King and found Wallis Simpson as an excuse to abdicate. It is now known through letters from Wallis to her ex-husband Ernest Simpson how desperate she was to dodge the marriage to the duke, but was trapped after the abdication. She had miscalculated in her estimation of the duke's character and motivation. All she had wanted was a fling with royalty and a chance to climb the social ladder.

She never loved him. She wrote letters to her husband at the time over and over again. I have no idea why they never say it. Her husband never wanted to divorce, she just got caught up in a friendship that he turned into more and the prince wouldn’t turn her lose. She wanted to leave but he told her he would commit suicide. So, she got a divorce & married him. But, she didn’t ever truly love him. People should lookup her letters. Their story was tragic, Wallis did not want to be Queen. She didn't even want to be married to him, for her, I think it was a mission of mercy in which she got trapped. After the abdication she had no choice, either marry him, or die! They both made the best of it but that was not good enough! A very sad story for both of them! On the bright side, we would still have the same Queen today! No children for Wallis and Edward, means Elizabeth would be our gracious and royal Queen, just a little bit later in the day. Mabey some of the Monarchies other crap would not have happened!

Wallis Simpson was basically a spy. She had slept with Ribbentrop and was passing secrets to the Nazis that went across Edward's Desk when he was serving in the British Military Mission in France. The FBI and British Secret Service suspected him of Nazi sympathy so gave him the governorship of the Bahamas. Oh and research the Marburg Files...yes they are real. Edward was not rich, they had an allowance of 10,000 pounds a year but that was stopped and Edward could not set foot in the UK without the express permission of the Monarch.

I have seen as many documentaries and reports, about the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, but this one was VERY good. Personal commentary from the ghost writers, private secretary and Lady Mosely provided a unique insight into their relationship. I am always looking for more information, on the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, and am glad I found this piece. Lastly, I truly wish the public would stop blaming Wallis Simpson for everything. It's not like the British Royal Family are a warm, welcoming and loving bunch. Wallis tried to convince King Edward VIII not to abdicate but he refused.

The Duke of Windsor was incapable of having children. He was sterile due to mumps in childhood. Either way The Princess Elizabeth was always going to be Queen.

I cannot believe that both of them did not have deep regrets! When Murrow asked them the unscripted question, Wallis's body language was one of deep stress, and regret was all over her face. I think the former King had to keep telling himself that there are no regrets. Otherwise, how could he handle what he threw away - and obviously he was bored out of his mind of their aimless life after being a working royal. I had read that Queen Consort Elizabeth was so vindictive towards the former King and Wallis. She was jealous of both. What has been forgotten was how popular King Edward VIII was . . . and Wallis was a very fashionable woman as well as an accomplished hostess.

Queen Consort Elizabeth was brave, elegant, optimistic and unbelievably popular around the world, there was nothing to be jealous about. A her husband gained immense popularity during WW2 because of his bravery and support of the people. Wikipedia says the rumours about vindictiveness and jealousy are just rumours. Try to find proof of vindictiveness - you won´t find any. The decision not togive Wallis a royal title was a tradition-based decision of the whole family. Queen Consort Elizabeth just wanted to have nothing to do with Wallis.

@glamdolly30

@@drspaseebo410 True, Edward was utterly self serving and devoid of personal integrity. On abdicating, the monarchy had to purchase land and properties from Edward including Balmoral, which had been specifically left to him by his father. He could not be allowed to keep such important royal residences - and the new king and queen didn't want an abdicated king having such a prestigious bolt hole in England, with the risk that he would set up a rival court to theirs. So he was paid handsomely for this royal property. Nonetheless Edward pleaded poverty to his brother when they thrashed out the abdication pay-off. He claimed to have only a modest sum in the bank but had secretly squirrelled away a fortune. Over the years he regularly rang his brother asking for more payouts from the royal coffers - it was not unknown for him to refuse to take his calls, because he knew it would be another plea for a big hand out.

"They" don't choose for him. It's what it is. They are born into royalty and simply have to deal. His brother and niece never wanted to be the monarch. I think the Duke and Duchess responded to that unscripted question with great dignity and sincerity. You can see on their faces that it was a painful question, and disconcerting because the interviewer was betraying their trust on live TV. So I am impressed with their graciousness in fielding the question.

The sadness of this story is what makes it so fascinating even so many decades after their deaths. I think the fellow in this video who says they defeated each other is quite right: she wanted the status he could give her while he gave away that status just to be with her. Even so, it could perhaps have been different … if they had chosen to live the quiet life of a minor Royal in the country. Instead, on leaving England, they made a series of ill-conceived decisions (starting with the pseudo Royal tour of Germany) and self serving actions (his desertion of his post at the Maginot line and their flight across France, Spain and Portugal) and blundered their way through the governorship of the Bahamas. It’s telling, too, when Mr Murphy says they had many acquaintances but no real friends - only each other. On the one hand it can appear that the rest of the Royal family treated them rather harshly; but on the other hand the affair of Wallis and David was terribly scandalous at the time, he did knowingly chuck his duty and responsibility to his birthright, his family and his countrymen, the financial wranglings that ensued from the abdication were shocking, he refused to listen to advice given to him by the palace, his brother the King and several prime ministers (Churchill among them) and, post Abdication, some of his comments, political leanings and actions bordered on high treason. It’s true that those who are given so much have high expectations to live up to. The Duke of Windsor ultimately did not live up to what was expected of him. He just loved Wallis and would have her no matter what the cost to anyone … including himself.

No matter how the family might've felt, how Very petty for them not to tell him his brother had died! Oh and watching the Duchess play jacks gave me life. It's so interesting she's from Baltimore, about 40 min north of where I'm from.

Many of the games they were playing seem totally bizarre from the outside & are in many ways remarkable in that such great attention is paid to details which in the modern world seem totally irrelevant, but they are linked to customs which go back hundreds of years and are linked to Royal rank and precedence. HRH The Duke of Windsor constantly petitioned Parliament & HM George VI to give his wife royal rank. If he had succeeded in having her received as a royal, ie an official royal protocol acknowledgement on arrival into the country, or the fact that his wife had been officially received by a member of the Royal family (as officially recorded in Hansard) it would strengthen his case for this to happen. Once it was known at the highest level in Royal & the British Government what a traitor the Duke of Windsor had been, especially during WW2, that was never going to happen. Anyone who can conspire against their own country and actively act against them during a time of war, in my view deserves nothing but contempt. We were fortunate that he abdicated. George VI was a much more courageous man who worked very hard to fulfill the role he was thrust into, he was admired, and much beloved. Remember first the press embargo & then the Official Secrets Act meant that people in Britain had little idea of Edward VIII’s activities for many years. When he had vacations abroad with Wallis in the years before they married the rest of the world could see the pics in the newspapers, but she was edited out of all British versions. After the abdication his disrespect of the new king was not widely known, and his activities during the war were not released, and then only drip by drip, until many years after HRH died in 1972. If you want to see what he was really like find a good complete adult life history of ‘David’ - or read as complete a version as you can find of his letters. In my opinion they reveal an arrogant, shallow, petulant, unintelligent man, who even after his brother became king, could only think of the interests of himself and his wife. A fascinating, unique and strange time - but, in my opinion, Wallis’ -& later HRH DofW’s - exclusion had less to do with her marital history (though at the time that would be unacceptable to the establishment in the case of a prospective future Queen) than it did HRH’s continued disloyal behaviour in the years following their wedding.

One of Britain's greatest actors, Edward Fox, does a brilliant job of portraying King Edward VIII in "Edward and Mrs. Simpson". I think you can purchase it via You Tube for $2.99. And Cynthia Harris was wonderful as the Duchess. It truly is a sad statement that they were exiled simply for loving each other and wanting to spend their lives together (that and the fact he had to abdicate). Although I suspect he really didn't want to be King but to be exiled was absolutely ridiculous. I'm glad that Prince Charles was able to marry Camilla - he has found great happiness with her all these years.

He was but one more among so many of the Hanovarians who were victims (and perpetuators) of diseased family relationships. Many of the British blamed Wallice for taking their king but it was his repeated threats of suicide that kept her in the picture during the crisis. Many have speculated that it was a dominant-submissive sexual relationship that appealed so much to him (her "pixie", as she said), but we'll never know. They were sad figures with lives of monumental regret.
