This was not a beautiful love story between Ernest and Walllis. This was a story of two social climbers who got in way over their heads, and one managed to get out while the other didn’t. David was just as selfish and manipulative as Wallis and Ernest. In the end, Wallis married a weaker version of herself, someone who was completely self-centered.

@@susanharris5926 I mean just the fact that the media were silent on the whole Edward & Wallis affair kind of shows how much power they had. Many credit the King and Queen as an effective cheerleader and morale booster for the war efforts... They were also sent to visit Roosevelt to convince him to join the war. I think its a strong possibility that they at least influenced the outcome of the war. It would also make sense that just because of who they were that many individuals who wield power would be influenced by the monarchs opinions, either to further their own careers or out of reverence for the monarchy as an institution. If Edward was king at the time he could have always pulled the "nuclear option" and used his reserve powers which would have effectively deadlocked the government until they could overthrow him. I think the monarchy has more influence than they would ever advertise. Even Edward and Wallis interviews were censored during the war out of fear it would influence people, even tho he wasn't still the king.

@@brett6905 The media were far from silent. It was all over the newspapers and the news. The biggest influence to the outcome of the second world war was the day Japan bombed Pearl Harbor and America joined the fray. The monarchs are not supposed to have opinions that they state publicly. Nor do I think they influence that many people. The banks and in particular the City of London are calling the shots in Europe and in many other parts of the world for that matter. Their interviews were censored after the spectacle of them visiting Hitler in order to make sure they said nothing in favor of Germany. You have to remember it wasn't so much the government that was against them - it was the Church of England and he unfortunately as King was the nominal head of that outfit which meant he and the government of the day had to take seriously their dictates with respect to divorced. As you know, things have changed a lot since then.
@brett6905

@@susanharris5926 Not in Britain, the media never reported bad things about the royal family in those days. The British People were not aware of Wallace until long after it had been reported all over the world. They had considerable influence where the media was concerned. If the Royal family held no power and didn't influence the media, why wouldn't the pictures of Ed and Wallace standing beside Hitler be published? They would certainly be profitable. "Spectacles" sell papers.... The couple also did interviews with magazines, and President Roosevelt made sure they were never published. There is a strong case to be made, that Roosevelt wanted to enter the war but couldn't until Japan struck first. We definitely declared economic war on Japan first when we were supposedly neutral. I don't think we will ever have the full story of what went down, but its a strong possibility. Roosevelt strongly disliked the Japanese, and I doubt the UK government would have spent the money (and it was a costly trip) to send the king and queen to America if they didn't think it would pay off. Roosevelt loved the royal family. You say the banks held considerable power. I would agree. I was watching a video of Queen Elizabeth having her portrait painted in 1992, and she was talking to the painter and casually mentioned having dinner with the Rothschilds, one of the most powerful banking families in Europe. I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but the Rothschilds and the royal family have been friends and business associates since the days of Queen Victoria. A Rothschild was Queen Victorias personal banker, her kids attended school with them. It is well documented. Part of being the monarch is you make friends in those circles. And being in with the monarch is definitely considered a feather in your cap in high society. Networking is a huge part of that family's power base. I think it was absolutely the government and not the church of England that helped oust Edward the 8th. He really was an unsuitable man in personality and intellect for the job. He was offensive to the establishment and a known nazi sympathizer. Wallace was the excuse to oust him but not the reason. The Church of England was certainly complicit but there is allot more to that story than him giving up the throne to marry the woman he loved. Why do you think many of the documents are still sealed to this day? I still stand by my opinion that George and Elizabeth quite possibly affected the outcome of the war. Technically the nuclear explosion ended the war, but for all intensive purposes the war was already won by the allies. If Britain folded early in the game, who knows what the outcome would have been You also didn't reply to my hypothetical.. If Edward the 8th had been king and used his reserve powers to shut down the government... It would have been chaos and absolutely weakened if not deadlocked the war effort. It wouldn't be a smart move on his part but it could have happened.

The banks held power then and now. The City of London is outside of laws that govern the rest of the country. Edward 8 was an immensely popular king and was far more amenable than any of his successors. He would have done a no worse job than the following 2. He had terrible judgment thinking that Germany and England had commonality and going there, but brains and political savvy have not been a requirement for the monarchy since Elizabeth I. As to reserve powers to shut down the government, I frankly know of no such thing. Monarchy in England is constitutional and is largely ceremonial and formal with actual political power in the hands of the government and has been since Charles I. Banks operate globally outside of all of this.

Wallis and Earnest both enjoyed the perks and privileges that came from David. Ernest accepted that David's attraction to Wallis was not innocent. They all played the game too long. Earnest spent so much time alone that he found someone else and was happier for it. Fawning adoration is fun at first but the novelty burns up fast. Wallis not literally trapped into marriage with David. Its just that women of her set saw no prospect other than marriage. Her affair with Edward so destroyed her reputation that she had no hope of finding anyone else. She did not have the courage to go it alone. She did hold up her end of the marriage for many long years. Ultimately she grew bored and irritated with her clinging husband. She romanticized her memories of Earnest for that had been a more balanced relationship. I do not pity either of them for their marriage was an endless round of useless extravagance.

She was a master manipulator. She probably loved neither of them, really. But I think she wrote those letters to Earnest, not because she missed or loved him so much, but because she was hoping to keep her knight in shining armor if anything went wrong with Edward. Likely, she lived in perpetual fear of being replaced by a younger, prettier model and Earnest would be her rebound. @@lorenataft6157 Nonsense! I am not defending Wallace, but comparing Meg with Wallace is a huge mistake! You are giving Meg too much credit! Firstly, Harry is not a future King, he is just the spare, hence he never gave up the throne for Meg! King Edward VIII was the heir to the throne, he was crowned King and gave up the Throne for Wallace Simpson. That is already the first major difference! Don't compare the heir with the spare! Harry might be high profile but he is just the spare and he gave up nothing for Meg! Second, while not everyone would agree with Wallace actions, she did come from a wealthy, well to do, renowned Baltimore family and was given a good education, in stark contrast with M's dubious background. Compared to M, Wallace Simpson was a Lady!

Just finished reading an autobiography on Wallis and although I think that her personality was very flirty and manipulative and that she did love the money and jewels that Edward showered upon her I feel like she didn’t want a divorce from Ernest. It is also forgotten a lot that Ernest was having an affair with a Mary Kirk and put forth first about the idea of a divorce. Also every time Wallis threatened to run away or leave Edward he threatened to do bad things to himself. Also if you reflect upon Edwards ‘playboy’ behaviour and that the fact that he was married to Wallis until he was 40 and never took interest in being king and always fought against the traditions of the establishment I feel like Wallis was just an escape goat for him not wanting to be king in the first place.

She didn’t love anyone except herself. Your documentary says that she was divorcing the man she loved. But, if you truly love someone, I do not feel you need to go outside your marriage for emotional support or satisfaction. No one feels sorry for her that I’ve ever heard of. It sounds to me that she had isolated herself from everyone around her, most likely through her own selfish actions Did you see her recoil from his kiss on the cheek @ 21:42. Not a loving move. 2 points -1. Infidelity factored in when Wallis and Ernest first got together. He was married and she ignored that, it seems. And infidelity at the end.Marriages that begin that way almost always fail (80% plus). Point 2 - Apparently, The Duke of Windsor never asked her to marry him. He just declared he must marry her. He' always got his own way, so he assumed what he wanted he would get. (not to mention the suicide threat) Still, she could have said "I don't" at the altar.

Harry is like Edward. Childish, dependent, passive unless directed, resentful at his position, angry at his family. M is just his way to escape and denigrate his family.

Wallis has been vilified as a social climber but, as usual, it’s far more complicated than that. It sounds a lot like Wallis mothered him and that was the root of his obsession with her. Regardless of how one feels about Wallis she certainly saved GB from this disaster of a king!

This is the first time I'm actually listening to this story, and hearing Wallis speak through her letters. Her use of reverse psychology, like the narcissist that she is, is unbelievable. She was never a deer in the headlight. She was never trapped. She was exactly where she wanted to be, though she would've preferred to be the mistress of a king, rather than the wife of an irrelevant ex-king. And her writing to her ex-husband Ernest? Typical narcissistic behaviour where the narcissist doesn't want to let go of their ex lovers, and want them all to be at their beck and call for the rest of their lives. That's why Wallis spins the sad stories of victimhood in her letters, a la Meghan Markle. She was no victim. Everything she did was for a reason. These letters don't tell the truth. They're the musings of a manipulative narcissist, nothing more, nothing less. This biographer has it completely wrong.

The similarities in this story to the Markle debacle are amazing. MM looks so much like Wallis, Harry is treated and behaves like her puppy He is forever, in my opinion now estranged from his family and the life he left behind, What a good thing for the UK and the Commonwealth that Edward DID abdicate, HIS personality is also described as being somewhat like Harrys, He looked rather weird, and it is reported that he did, in fact, have some unusual physical traits! We ended up with our amazing Queen Elizabeth who has fulfilled her role in a way that no one else could. Long Live The Queen !

Sometimes things happen for a reason. I just cannot feel any empathy for Wallis. She broke up a marriage, and “took care” of Edward,, while married to Earnest. I’m also not impressed with Edward and Earnest’s unethical behavior. All of them were flawed.

I don’t see how Ernest did anything wrong. His wife asked for a divorce, and he granted it to her. At that time, it was considered ungentlemanly to divorce one’s wife; one always allowed one’s wife to divorce her husband, manufacturing evidence for her divorce grounds, if necessary. It was considered chivalrous. Women were never presented at court, to be adulterous, or in any way at fault. The husband was always presented as at fault. Ernest simply acted as a gentleman was expected to. Wallis, on the other hand, was a total mess, who had no idea what she wanted. She was unfaithful and lost, in both her relationship with Ernest Simpson and her marriage to the Duke of Windsor. She was a disaster for any man who fell for her.
