We had such a wide variety of music in the 80s!!! We had the rock, alternative, industrial, progressive, rap, pop, R&B and music that made its own category, like Prince. And because of MTV, people had easy access to all of it. That's why 80s kids know so much different music, even if a certain genre wasn't their favorite. This is part of the 2nd British Invasion, so much great music.

Synths came first. Hair bands were mid-to-late 80s. Duran Duran came on the scene in 1981, and they're synth heavy ... as was New Wave in general. The New Wave invasion started in the early 80s. Another Johnny Hates Jazz song is "Turn Back the Clock." Also Level 42 "Something About You," The Church "Under the Milky Way," and maybe The Railway Children "In the Meantime" for some of the mellower 80s new wave. Your channel could last a decade just reacting to great 80s new wave songs.

Great song! But my absolute favorite song by them is “Turn Back The Clock”. It’s sad, but not super slow. It has a way of speaking to my heart in a way no other song ever has, and even more so as I’ve gotten older. I’d love to see your reactions to it. ❤

Great song... I remember buying this on a cassette single. There was a short time where they stopped making 45s in the late 80s and before they started making CD singles in the early 90s... if you wanted to buy a single song and not the whole album your only option was cassette singles... Around the same time this came out there was another group that had a couple songs... Breathe... the songs were "Hands to Heaven" and "How Can I Fall?". I think you'd like them.

When this lovely song came out, it was considered an outward case of British irony, that this band is called "Johnny hates Jazz"...since they are a sophisti-pop group, which in turn is a genre that takes inspiration from j-a-z-z and soul.

I believe Johnny Hates Jazz was a one hit wonder, but if you liked it then you'll love The Promise by When In Rome. It's in the same lane, but it's more poppy and upbeat. Also another similar group that takes it in that blue eyed soul direction Amber was talking about is Breathe, and the song you should start with is Hands To Heaven.

You would be wrong. I Don't Want To Be A Hero was a Top 40 hit for them also. While other JHJ songs didn't break the Top 40, they did receive significant airplay in the US and worldwide.

@@cullmaster7361 My comment comes as US resident. The typical definition of a one hit wonder is a group that has only one top 40 single. While JHJ had several top 40 hits in the UK, they only had 2 in the US : Shattered Dreams #2 and I Don't Want To Be A Hero #31. So technically they wouldn't be a one hit wonder although there is a big gap between those 2 songs. I believe the group of people who know Shattered Dreams and no other JHJ songs is larger than the group who know multiple songs by them. Calling them a one hit wonder is not me downplaying their music. I'm sure they have lots of good songs that for whatever reason never did as well as Shattered Dreams. I'm a huge Prince fan, and most of my favorite songs by him are not the hits that everyone knows. It sounds like they liked the song so, I'm sure they'll react to JHJ again and maybe I'll find some more songs from them I like.

"Shattered Dreams" peaked @ #2 (3 wks) in 1988. Johnny Hates Jazz charted one more single in the Billboard Hot 100 "I Don't Want to be a Hero" (#31/ 1988) and that was it in the U.S.

Decent song, if you lived in this era it got a LOT of radio play which caused a bit of the "Landslide" effect for me if you know what I mean. Agree with other comments, "Something About You" by Level 42 is worth a listen. One of my favorite 80's tracks is "Love Of The Common People" by Paul Young.

Saw them at an 80s festival last year - my favourite of theirs is "I don't want to be a hero". Adam Ant, Tony Hadley (of Spandau Ballet), Billy Ocean, Thompson Twin (just the one - still brilliant), Red Box (absolutely ADORE "Lean on me" and "For America" is also a great song) and Belinda Carlisle also played. This year it was Heaven 17, Go West, Kim Wilde, Boomtown Rats and Soft Cell. Great stuff :D
