I love TTartisan lenses and while I have loads of ‘pro’ glass, I always use the 35mm 1.4 on my aps-c bodies (I have 2 of the 35s, one for ef-m and other for Fuji). To me this is what we need to persuade the current generation to get into; embrace manual focus, funky flares and imperfections - that’s where creativity grows. It encourages you to slow down and think more actively, instead of engaging burst mode, af tracking and assuming a zombie-like state. That has to stop for all our sakes.

While I agree that imperfections are good and everyone should try and learn how to use manual focus, I disagree with af being in a zombiemode. You still habe to think about lots of things like composition, placing yourself in the right spot, what do you want to be your main subject, what should be in the background so on and so forth. Just bc focus happens to be automatic doesnt mean its bad

@@nenadradosavljevic439 clearly there are times when AF is a godsend, absolutely in BS client work. But there’s something to be said for connecting to your environment and the process especially in street photography and personal projects. Picking the moment, every frame a prisoner. I’ve seen absolute morons doing burst AF on static buildings - god knows what the shutter count is on their cameras. That kind of thing doesn’t fill me with any hope for this generation - they are wholly reliant on the camera doing all the work, void of situational awareness. Then you ask where does the creativity come, the imagination, problem solving. That for me all develops through the process and shooting manual is a big part of that. You could argue their fascination for more megapixels erodes the intelligence of composition further if they can ‘crop’ out the crap, but that’s another debate. 😂

That is my go to lens on my aps-c as well. I am in the same boat. I have much more expensive lenses, but I keep coming back to the 1.4 over and over. I also bought a Helios 44-2 for the bokeh, and realized my 1.4 gave the same effect only better. It is an amazing little lens.

yep ive compared it with various adapted options and it always seems to be the best, its also really easy to focus - i have a 40mm 1.4 Voigtlander for leica mount (a lens I love on FF) and IQ is pretty much identical, the TT 35mm 1.4 has more vignetting but less CA fringing wide open. The TT is much easier to focus too, than the tiny tab on the voigt. I think you lose the charm of the Helios on Aps-c because of the smaller image circle, all the magic happens in the wider areas of the glass and that's only picked up on full frame - it might work well with a focal reducer though.@@NeuralNarratives2023

For canon I converted an 55mm FL 1.2 …. Had problems nailing focus at first. Added the autofocus confirm chip and it changed the experience. Run the aperture to 2.8… roll the focus until it beeps/flashes… roll the aperture wide open and bang perfect focus almost every time. Not great for sports and action… but worked great even without a tripod.

It has been on my radar now that I have put my Sony ZV-E10 mini rig together. So far I own just the kit lens and the Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 and looking for my first prime lens. I have been in front of the camera for 2 documentaries about my terminal disease of MSA, but my wish is to film more on my own for the final chapter. Hey Thanks! Nice to hear from you. Yes, there seems to be this drive for sharper and more clinical lenses, then we use diffusion filters on them, or alter the image in editing, to make it more pleasing.

Just found this. Thank you for a great review. My copy is on its way! You clearly stated here what I have suspected in one sense - that most reviewers who complain about this lens sharpness actually have no idea about the DOF this lens has and how that messes with your attempts to focus! But I do wonder about copy variance also. I shall fond out soon!

My favourite lens 0,95 is the Mitakon Speedmaster II 35mm on Fujifilm. Razor sharp wide open but don’t get the swirl bokeh. For that I do use an old Helios 44-2. Nice images 🙌

I have the 1.4 TTArtisans 35mm and love it. It takes some practice (for me anyway) to nail the focus though. I've thought about getting the 0.95.

Just picked up the 50mm version for my Nikon Zfc. It's a monster. So much glass! The retro styling looks amazing on the Zfc and it's a fun lens to shoot with (aside from it being super heavy). So glad I stumbled across these TTArtisan vids from you, Mark. Probably never would've gotten one on my own.

Whilst I agree with the assessment of this lens performance wide open, do not let that performance alone influence whether or not you should get one. This is more than a one trick pony. Stopped down my copy of this lens performs very well indeed. Indeed I bought my copy based on reviews of its stopped down performance as I really had no interest in wide open bokeh shots before owning it. What I like about it is also it has very good handling characteristics and balances very well on the X-T1,2, 3 etc bodies. I spent a few quid and attached a standard lens hood and 58mm pinch on cap to shield from flare and to protect the front element. That 0.95 aperture makes focusing very easy at normal rather than close up distances for more general subjects and I then swiftly stop down to my desired aperture. I find it a trifle soft wide open, but that makes it ideal for flattering portraits and I find myself using this aperture far more than I ever imagined I would as a consequence. For me the extra cost of the lens compared to some cheaper f1.4/1.7 or 2 alternatives is well worth it due to its all round performance and handling, and it is superior to any 35mm adapted lens you care to find other than high quality (and very expensive) rangefinder ones regarding IQ. To get anything better you have to go the extra mile and buy one of the AF offerings from various manufacturers, but then you will lose that 0.95 aperture. TTartisans have been producing some very nice lenses of which I have a number but not all. I am also very impressed by their recent 25mm and 50mm f2 lenses which are an ideal duo for a compact travel set, as is their 27mm f2.8 AF lens as a nice walk about companion

This is excellent information, and I really should have cover this in the video. Even if you don’t use f0.95 all the time, or even much of the time, it can be a “bonus mode” and gives a look, and an option, you don’t get with and f1.4 or f2

I think the japanese call this "Nisen" bokeh and I love it as well. It elevates the background to its own sometimes complimentary, sometimes distracting, artform in the photograph. I love TT Artisan lenses, they are new, you don't have to buy vintage lenses and all the downsides that can come with that, and they are CHEAP.

It’s almost like lenses like this are a strange paint color or very specific and different brush. Or like a spice in a dish that can’t be ignored. Maybe like cardamom. Yes it can go with savory or sweet. It can be enjoyed immensely but not by all. The flavor is strong and very identifiably different. But if you bite down on the pod it’s overwhelming for most. It can ruin your mouthful of delicious food. It’s pretty versatile but it’s inescapably specific. For its applications it really energizes a dish, when you don’t want it though it’s powerful enough to really make the whole thing miss the mark. All that to say I love biting and chewing the pod, and I want this lens!

Interesting lens. Not an expensive lens but still a prime lens. Close-up shots can be hard to focus and get sharp results. With digital images at least you can take the shot multiple times when possible and keep just the good ones. When taking still shots with a tripod you can stop down for sharper imagers instead of using the maximum .95 aperture.

I love TTartisan. This lens is silly but wonderful. This is true for a lot of their lenses. And the only one I don't like is the 17mm. In an age of chasing perfection, there's nothing wrong with some optical flaws.

Looks like an interesting lens. Did you ever mention the manufacturer in the video? I didn’t hear it. However as soon as you showed the screw in lens cap I knew it was TTArtisan. Looking at the images there is definitely a softness reminiscent of old lenses. (I know as I am scanning in hundreds just now from the 80s and 90s). I think it would look pretty cool on the Nikon Zfc. 😊

I already have the 50mm f1.2 and the 35mm f1.4 TTArtisan lenses but .95 of this lens and the 50mm really intrigued me so I decided to buy both. I do have two M mount cameras. My favorite setup lately has been my M6 with the Sigma 18-35mm with an EF - M adapter.

If you REALLY are looking for awesome bokah, you need a Petzval or a Soviet era Helios 44-2 58mm. I don't know about the other cameras, but I am a manual shooter, so naturally, I gravitate towards Fujifilm. And with that platform they've got outstanding "Focus Peeking" for us manual lens shooters, and it's surprisingly accurate. Other cameras might call it something else... but it puts a red outline around whatever is showing sharpness. If you are a portrait shooter, you can nail the eye pretty good with that. I have many vintage manual lenses... Meyer Optik Gorlitz Primoplan 58mm is my third favorite if you want dreamy backgrounds.

I prefer the 44M series over the 43-2, but have a few different versions. The M lenses have much better build and a bit more contrast, just enough in my mind. Vintage lenses are really great.

I own the f/1.4 version and it certainly sufficient. I think that some of my vintage lenses can achieve similar quality like the Konica Hexanon AR 50mm f/1.8 which I can use on my Canon M6MII and my Canon RP with different adapters and cost a fraction of this lens' price.

Soap bubble bokeh is best achieved by Cooke triplet lens design, most notable is Meyer Optik Görlitz Domiplan 2.8/50, it’s slow compared to this one but also very cheap. Good review 👍🏻

Im looking for a budget lens that will give a "film like" quality to images (using a nikon z-fc). I stumbled across your review of the helios 44 (around £95 including adapter in the UK) but now Im looking at this one. It does look like it gives a less saturated not overly sharpened option. @@markwiemels I know it sucks because I don't have mirrorless :-) well I have an icon J2 but no one makes anything for those I like my 50 megapixel full frame and I've already got glass for it :-) I understand why mirrorless puts the lens closer to the sensor which means you can use smaller glass and smaller glass is a whole lot easier than a whole lot cheaper to make

I don't think they are designing them on purpose to have "character" but rather it's cheaper to manufacture lenses with patents that expired. Anyways, I own almost all TT lenses, and almost all of them are worth the money

Yeah I could had bought that lens but since the EF-M 11-22mm f/4-5.6 was cheaper (230 euro) in my country I went for that. Another new lens that you probably will be interested in is the Photoelectric 4mm f/2.8 Circular Fisheye. Other than that I don't really trust those Chinese lenses on their claims. I mean I have a f1.4 7artisans lens that is good but on f1.4 is 0.46 stops darker than the Sigma so I don't know what to make of that. And on f8 is more than one stop brighter than any other lens I got, obviously because it's f dial is messed up.

Forget about the 4mm lens. I bought it (unfortunately) and turns out to be for M43 sensors not for APS-C. That means it uses just the 37.5% of the sensor (of a Canon) instead of 50% a normal fisheye would use. Don't trust the other KZfaqrs reviews about that lens, they are stupid or something.

5:25 you should try and get your hands on the nikkor 58mm 0.95, firstly it's actually full frame, and it does actually maintain incredible image quality wide open at close focus. But you pay for it.

Aperture size doesn't exactly translates to light transmission. It will impact DoF for sure but it is passible that light transmission will be at 1.2 or slower.

The bigger the opening, the more light you get, but the total light does vary from lens to lens, this is true. So f stop is not an absolute measure, like t stop is.

Two focus tools you should be using - punch in assist, and focus peaking. Do some googling about how to use these in you camera. If you are missing focus too often, start using the lens at f2, until you get better. I use the punch in assist the most, and find it the most accurate.

@@markwiemels Thanks, I am learning to use focus peaking and it is a wonderful tool. Not sure what punch in assist is on my M50 MarkII. Where would I set infinity when photing models and fashion shows?

Just found your channel, great presentation, thanks for the video! I've been looking at this lens to pair with my copy of the 7artisan 50mm 0.95 and everything you said rings true. This lens actually proved to me that focus peaking on my X-e1 isn't very accurate while my X-t3 is. 😅 If i'm shooting handheld I tend to focus generally then move slowly in or out and snap by feel, the slice of focus is so shallow! Beautiful bokeh, especially for the $

I love the 30mm and 50mm combo, I get such great photos out of both of them. That 50mm has taken some of my favourite photos of all time.

I'm not into vintage, but I do like special FX lenses. This one doesn't beat the line of rebuilt Petzval lenses for modern cameras. Their sharpness beats this and the bokeh goes from simply beautiful to absolutely mind-bending.

Even bigger win with a lens designed I this way: the halation makes skin tones buttery smooth. For spectacular, creamy portraits, use one of these!! Better (IMO) than the 50mm f/0.95 when shot closer to the subject.

Nice, sometimes. But background blur is overrated. See the work of Sebastiao Salgado. He generally uses a small aperture and in almost all his photos everything is in focus. In interviews he emphasizes that this is more immediate and realistic and that background blur is not. I tend to agree.

The called Boquet is just an effect caused by mixing focal length with maximum aperture and distance to the subject. It is clear that with an aperture like this is possible to obtain a background as "dissolved" and fill it with a lot of bubble soap or mini doughnuts as you want... The expression about the sharpness of the lens tell me that it is not to sharp, and after give to the video a "like" due to its professional presentation I want to say that any one can have an opinion on every issue in this art. That is the beauty of the photography.

I’m a big fan of the Helios 44M, it’s the first gen of multi-coat optics, and the images look great and the build is so much better than the older 44-2.
