I’ve read somewhere that when the witch responds to the cross, it’s not that she’s responding because of the faith it represents but because it’s made up of perfect right angles and her power comes from complex irregular angles. Just adds more depth to the story than the typical cross warding off evil 😈 🐙 📖

Lovecraft describes Brown Jenkin more as a Rat creature, than a monkey; a rat with hands, and a human face. Also, Gilman's studies in higher mathematics (concurrent with the real-life, then-contemporary explorations of relativity, and the emergence of quantum theory) are what opened his mind to become receptive to the influence of Old Keziah. This is consistent with a Lovecraftian theme (also touching on Quantum theory) that to explore something, or even imagine it, brings that thing into reality. Gilman's sensitivity to everything he experienced was brought on by his interest in, and exploration of, higher mathematical realms of thought. His strange attraction to that star (Algol?), his being drawn to that island in the river, all emerged from his academic pursuits at Miskatonic U. In my opinion, this is one of H.P. Lovecraft's finest narratives, skillfully combining science fiction with the supernatural to the extent that it becomes nearly impossible to tell where one leaves off and the other begins. Lovecraft also employs time-shifting as a device that keeps the reader (at least THIS reader) on-edge and off balance. He used a similar technique to a greater extent in "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward".

I used to live in a irregular trapezium shaped room in my dorm. First time my mom visits, she felt nauseous and she can't explain why.

Could be the imbalance of the room has an affect of the brain and even your hearing or supernatural reasons

Hey David Steward. You made a video back in 2017 on writing tips. I just finished my first Draft of a Lovecraftian Western yesterday because you that video and Stephen King's on writing. Thank you for that video.

I moved into an upper level bachelor suite when starting my MSc, and chose it specifically because it had a ceiling and corner that was exactly as I had imagined the room Gilman occupied in "The Dreams in the Witch House". Unfortunately, no visits from Nyarlathotep. I did have way more sleep paralysis in that suite though, so there's that.

Brown Jenkin has haunted my dreams for 30+ years. And I hear the whining chants and the drums and the otherworldly cacophony. And now I want to read it again!

Love this dude, very in depth🤘🏾✨ Little shaky how he brought Nyarlathotep up. The protagonist says he awakes and can’t remember his dreams but feels he endured more than the dreams he had. He goes on to say the rat is shown with a blurry light that as she comes into focus, Brown Jenkins and the witch both want him to go with them to meet a more powerful being. Idk I think the nightmares should have let the witch settle in and even show us more conversation with our protagonist before revealing that there’s another more powerful being. Felt a little rushed but who am I to judge😂

One of my favorite Lovecraft stories for sure. I always figured Wes Craven had most likely read it.

I think this short story is my favorite of Lovecraft’s because it is SOLIDLY Cosmic Horror and transcends his proclivity to tie his science fiction with dark supernatural fantasy. This work of fiction could understandably be the inspiration for such works of modern horror/sci-fi like “Doom,” “The Mist,” “Half-Life,” as well as other works of modern Cosmic Horror that involve interdimensional terror. I regularly come back to re-read this story because it honestly becomes more and more interesting with each subsequent reading.

One of my favorite Lovcraft stories Edit: I read it in a collection which also contained At the Mountains of Madness, The Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath and The Shadow Out of Time, which must be my 4 favorite HPL stories.

I've been wondering if there are any short stories that have dealt with unbelievers and skeptics practicing prayer and stumbling upon weird instances of several very specific prayers being answered? I think that this would actually be more interesting than the way that 'The Exorcist' or the inter-dimensional group of tales deal with the supernatural, but I've found that few authors choose to explore this aspect of human spirituality.

I love HP’s story and this was good but it was a little too… Blatant? Like the original story builds and builds until there’s this acknowledgment of the horrors being real. Seeing the creature, which I thought would be more “ghul” like in the story. When Pickman says “He reminds me of myself at that age” I thought it would be revealed that the boy had been switched with a ghoul. Like Pickman had in the original. Still good though.

The movie was horrible. It's shorter than than it takes to read the story so stupid. Lol. This is also my favorite , so I guess my critique would be more harsh. However I really don't understand the choice to have eldrich be a woman and her baby be the one to be sacrificed. What I liked about the story is the whole town knows the story and the manager cared about Gilman instead of that slum lord fat guy they cast. I dont like how no one believes Gilman but the guy that prays when the whole house was like behind Gilman and how other people seem brown Jenkins and the manager put rat poison and tries 3 times to cover the rat whole. And they find these bones and the cross ans the knife and all that and the characters are so weak in the movie I hated it.
