Weely Lovecraft! This time we are talking about "Festival" - a short story from 1925 that involves both a "descent into madness" and an "unreliable narrator." It also bears similarity to two Stephen King stories - "Graveyard Shift" and "Jerusalem's Lot."
PS sorry for the distortion, I moved my mic back to where it was before my boom stand broke, and didn't re-adjust my gain.

Thank you for making this video. I have a little trouble understanding his writing. You explaining it helps a lot.

The Festival is one of my favourites. There are a lot of really excellent Lovecraft short stories that just don't get the wider attention they deserve, being overshadowed by the longer, and more famous, ones such as The Dunwich Horror, The Call of Cthulhu, At the Mountains of Madness etc. I'm really glad you're looking to make this a regular feature.

"NAMELESS CITY" has story parallels to "AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS" and the living ghosts of the Seb'k horned reptiles like the people of blue litten K'n-yan in "THE MOUND" as the species wanted immortality and they have it.

I felt that this story was an initiation of sort. The whole experience was supernatural from the very start, as the arrival at Kingsport had already merged into some sort of trip to the past. Flying away into what can only be deemed the underworld would have bestowed knowledge of things better left unknown. I think he would have emerged a fully versed witch, for lack of a better term. I wonder if the whole thing about the wax mask and the crawling things that have learned to walk is some sort of hint at these witches living eternally. After their body dies, they go on in the form of worms and such that can come together to emulate a human body. I mean, our narrator heavily suggests that his father was a part of this, yet no nention of him having a waxen face. Only his real grandfather could have had access to the items he was buried with. Just throwing around ideas based on my impressions. Also, The Silver Key has a passage where Randolph Carter remembers from his childhood the old church in Kingsport and how it was torn down long ago to make way for the Congregational Hospital. He said he followed the story closely because of the strange tunnel found beneath the church that lead deep into the rocky hillside. This, along with the narrator's validation of the Necronomicon, proves that The Festival was real.

I see the green cold flame created the bodies of the worms for the sorcerers to inhabit and created the hybrids as their servitors and steeds.

@@DVSPress I'm currently watching the color out of space video! Absolutely love your channel, so thank you! A book I picked up has a LARGE collection of his works and is absolutely fascinating. I've never been a horror kind of guy until a few years ago. Ever since I read The Hound (my first lovecraft story) i have been hooked and have written very brief, first person tales myself. Speaking of Novels apologies for the length of this comment! But thank you for replying 😊

Very interesting David. I’ve not read much of Lovecraft, but I’ll have to read this story sometime in the near future. It’s really cool to hear how Stephen King was inspired by it, yet I guess when hearing what the story is about, it’s not to hard to see why King would look to this story, along with other stories of Lovecraft, for inspiration.

I think the revelation that his ancestors were guiding him takes away all the horror from the story

Not sure what you mean. It isn't much of a revelation since from the beginning our main character has knowledge of his families ties to this cult. He even mentions that some of his people were hanged for being witches. He is on this journey because it is something his father wished him to do. He knows that this is about keeping an ancient belief alive. He even knows of the Necronomicon. I don't understand why this is deemed a revelation by you, or why it diminishes the horror.
