In the album, this song transitions right into "Oh, Father," which is a somber exploration of the loss of that childhood innocence and joy from this song through the tragedy of a parent's substance abuse and how the child experiences that. It is a masterpiece in its own right. The video for the song is fantastic. You should definitely check it out.

Definitely need to react. Oh Father is just brilliant. The song and video is so powerful. Love it.

It's the biggest and most emotional shift on any of her albums. It goes from the dream of a beautiful childhood, to the reality of mourning the death of a parent and the confusion it leaves for the entire family, told through the style of "Citizen Kane". And the drunken moments in the Oh Father are not anything to do with her Father. It's her 1st Husband Sean Penn. When you watch the video next time you will think the man who hits her and cries as he watches her leave the house, through the bottle, was actually played by him, but it's a look-a-like actor.

I've always love Madonna's music for the most part but now that I'm older I fully appreciate the stories within the music. It seems like songs today lack that story and are just a few sentences repeated over and over again. I don't even remember the lyrics...but I remember every word of Madonna's songs.

On the 1989 Like A Prayer album this song flows seamlesly into the next song, Oh Father. Dear Jessie is such a child-like trip to past, I get baroqque vibes, lullaby vibes and go instantly into chilhood years when listening to this. The orchestration is spot on, and like you said, it is created in such a nice way. The instruments stand out as their own and ther is no overwhelming wall of sound. Such a lovely song.

Yes the other side of the coin of childhood. Dear Jessie is what childhood SHOULD be, and Oh Father is what Childhood SHOULD’NT be. Would be interested in your reaction to Oh Father.

It’s a very interesting segue - I always took it as Dear Jessie being about innocence, and Oh Father being about innocence lost. The death of a parent would bring that about.

Please react to Oh Father, the song this song transitions into.. Its a darker take on the childhood pysche.. Its, in my opinion, a musical masterpiece... And then there's the video.. The use of light.. And shadow.. And the imagery and symbolism.. It is a very powerful and poignant video. I loved the atmosphere and flavour of Dear Jessie.. Its celebration of the dream and the imagination.. The fairytale. Love it

This is one of her many overlooked gems (Look of Love, You'll See) etc and has elements of Sgt Pepper. She is never given credit for her work, song writing, she wrote this before she was 30..total masterpiece of a song. Love you acknowledge her worth :)

Surprised to see a review for Dear Jessie! Such an in-depth review, cool. Any Madonna fan will know that the musical interlude at the end transitions into Oh Father (review that one too!). At the end of '89 Oh Father was released in the US and Dear Jessie was released in Europe. Always wondered if it would've been a hit in the US

🎉This song is so marvallous, "si magique pour enfants & adultes"🧚‍♀️🧜‍♀️✨️... The orchestration is🎻 typicall of Madonna as you say and "merci", we had "Papa don't preach", "Oh Father", "Iwant you" with Massive Attack, "Take a bow", "Falling free" etc. ❤ Amour de France and "Merci Monsieur"!

Interesting about this album and Madonna when this album Cover was sprayed with Petulia oil. Also not long after this album came out came the immaculate collection a greatest hits album. The Immaculate collection came out just around the time that CDs were becoming popular. The immaculate collection had a Technology called QSound giving each remastered song a 3D sound also remixes of Like A Prayer and Borderline

Funny thing, I remember this song from my childhood, I remembered animated parade of toys and such and for the life of me I could not remember who sang it. Fast forward some years between 2016/2018 and by chance I decided to revisit Madonna and I found it, I was so shocked it was Madonna’s song I can’t even say, great song.

Pink elephants and lemonade - great overlooked song that transitions into Oh Father, stand out track on the album. Pat Leonard wrote/co-wrote this and it was inspired by his daughter Jessie. I think i read that his daughter as in the studio with Madonna and they connected and song evolved from there.

I haven't watched/listened to you in a while. Forgot how introspective you are. From Madonna to DMT trips. Enjoyed your comments. Most people think of Madonna as being progressive, controversial and a rebel. There is some truth to that but in some ways she is very old school. She draws inspiration from moments from her youth - old Hollywood, dance and imagination. I think she used these as an escape as a child because she didn't feel loved and because of the trauma of her catholic upbringing and her mom's death. There are hints of this throughout her catalogue and in her interviews.

Your comment about the orchestration reminded me of an occurence from a few years ago ... I was driving home from work after a night shift on an empty road, listening to the radio; they were playing the usual insipid pop songs of the day from some boyband or other and then one after the other, they played "Outside" by George Michael, followed by "Ray of Light" by Madonna, and the difference in sound quality and musical arrangement from those two, established artists, was like chalk and cheese when compared to the "modern" stuff that was being spoon-fed to the masses. It was like someone had put the orchestra right in the car with me; it was astounding.

interesting that you like this song as it reignited that "childhood innocence" when the GENIUS of this song is the transition of this song on the album into "Oh Father", a song about the LOSS of childhood innocence due to abuse. One of the saddest songs ever and the video is a David Fischer masterpiece full of symbolism.

Honestly, one of my favorite songs of the Like a Prayer album is Dear Jessie, but this video is crap. I mean, just compare it to other animated videos or movies at that time (Disney etc), or Paula Abdul's Opposites Attract video. I get it, she didn't want to put so much energy into this video, but at that time, when videos were huge part of the song's promotion, it deserved a better video. Anway, I love the song, I love the orchestration, and I love her calm voice (especially at the bridge part). I really wanted to see a Till Death Do Us Part and a Keep it Together video as well.
