Vans’ Loveletters To LGBTQ+ was filmed earlier this year, before the passing of legendary skater and host Jeff Grosso, who was a champion for inclusive
skateboarding. We believe this message of unity and equality must be told, and that all voices of the LGBTQ+ community deserve to be heard. Grounded in the brand values of inclusivity and being open to everyone, Vans believes this unifying message must be told, and stands in support of the LGBTQ+ Skate Community as we continue to drive positive change.
Love Letters to Skateboarding is about the love we all have for skateboarding, a commonality we all share regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation. We are all one people with a love for skating. This LGBTQ+ episode is testament to that.
On March 31st, 2020 our beloved legendary Vans family member and larger than life defender of skateboarding, Jeff Grosso, passed away. Jeff said this LGBTQ series of Love Letters and Love Notes were the episodes he was most proud of in the 11 years of the show. These were the last episodes he filmed. In the episodes Jeff admits, “I was taught at a young age to speak this way… I have been part of the problem…but I am trying to change…the last thing I want to do is make someone feel uncomfortable or make them not feel safe ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO SKATEBOARDING.”
It is a fitting send off to our dear friend who believed that skateboarding is for everyone and all are welcome.
Jeff was so stoked on this one- he cried a record 3 times while shooting it!
Vans is thankful to everyone who shared their story, strengthening the community of skateboarding. If you are a person in crisis or in need of a safe and judgement free place to talk, call the TrevorLifeline now at 1-866-488-7386.

Sounds a little corny, but for real the Grossman and the SixStair boys changed my life! Up until the letters I'd never in my life seen anyone so passionate on the level he was. This series was pretty much my introduction into skateboarding and it literally translates the feeling into words. Far easier said than done because it means so many different things to so many different people but Jeff bridged the gap. Fucking amazing skater and fucking amazing dude! I got your rightful cover hanging on my wall Grosso sucks for life!!!!

I started skating in 1984. I'm old and I suck at skating. I've said a bunch of mean and stupid things over the course of my life. Eventually I also shut the fuck up and learned better so I could do better. I'm so stoked that in 2020 we're finally at a place in skateboarding where this video exists and only got 33 thumbs down and a handful of stupid homophobic and transphobic comments. Progress is being made and I've seen it in my lifetime and that gives me hope for the future. I'm trying my best to raise my kids in such a way that they don't repeat my mistakes and we get to that mentality Elissa Steamer talked about. Peace and love to all the skate fam!

Skateboarding has people from all aspects of life. From all ethnicities, genders, economic statuses...everybody. We may not all be able to agree on everything but what we can agree on is how beautifully fun and painful skateboarding is. Putting your life on the line without hurting anyone but yourself. It’s a universal language that we can all speak. Stoke breaks through language/cultural barriers.

2 years late but I don't care. I quit skating back in 2009 because the casual and prevalent homophobia, along with my small town skate crew ditching me after I came out making it feel like yet another place I didn't belong. I wish 18 year old me could have seen this back then and kept skating. Regardless the (quite frankly many) tears of validation shed while I watched it this morning were very real and it makes me even more confident about picking it back up at 31. I've reclaimed I never wanted to let go in the first place and this time around I'm not sacrificing any part of who I am to be here. It's an incredible feeling. Thank you so much for this Jeff, and rest in peace knowing that what you did here along with Unity's movement and message is going to continue making a positive life-changing impact ♥🛹

I can honestly say having been a skater 40 years i have never seen homophobia at a skate park but it clearly happens now days which sucks . Back in the very early 90s i can remember a guy turning up to the park in a dress to skate . He wasn't being odd or making a big deal out of his clothing its just what he wanted to wear and no one cared . But we could see he was not feeling accepted . So one day as a group we all talked and made the choice to all put on a dress to go skate . when he turned up to the park and saw over 20 grown men skating in Womans clothes he rolled into the park and started to cry . It was at this moment i think he knew his community accepted him . And to this day we are still friends . So i think if we make people just feel accepted and connect in skateboarding who we are as a person matters not

@xaos kuntablast: I have to doubt there is any homophobia at skateparks to be honest. Skateboarding in general is easily one of the most inclusive sports out there. It's the same non-existing bs about how girls don't feel comfortable at skateparks, yet wherever I go to skateparks I see girls and all kinds of people skating not bothering others or having fun together. The whole thing is such a non-issue it's ridiculous to see this narrative being pushed so hard. As a heterosexual I never understood the point of walking around all dressed up as something radically outside the norm. But at the same time I don't agree we should normalise it either. Why normalise anything that isn't statistically the norm? I'm skinny as hell, well outside the 'norm' for my height. Doesn't mean I go around wearing t-shirts demanding 'skinny dude' rights or something backwards like that. Who cares what you are? It ultimately doesn't matter. And people who try to 'make it matter', are literally a part of the problem! It's good when people try to be inclusive, but I feel a lot of this is overly exaggerated bs. Whatever happened to just being nice and not have to virtue signal or stress whatever type of person / sexuality someone is? I really don't get the activism. It only creates us versus them type of hate really. And no, don't mistake my criticism for transphobia or nonsense like that. I literally don't consider it a big deal, even when I would only date real women capable of actually getting kids.
@chrisdee7511

@@PHeMoX I think skateboarding doesn't LOOK inclusive from the outside. I lived through the baggy pant 90's scene and it was pretty jocked out. Skaters were not even inclusive to each other back then. I have always felt that if you're on a skateboard, you're a skater.

I'm really glad to see a video like this. The topic of LGBTQ+ skaters has been pretty taboo for a long time, and now it seems like skateboarding is becoming more accepting and supportive. And I'm glad Jeff (R.I.P.) was able to be one of the more respected pros to help open up the dialogue by being as open and honest as he was. For that, he won my respect. Seriously, skateboarding needs more videos like this. I think this would encourage a lot of people (skaters or not) to not only come to terms with who they are but to also know that they're not alone.

I remember this spitfire ad with Leo Baker skating with a rainbow smoke flare thing on Instagram and loved it, loved the back story to it but as I was reading the comments, it was a nasty place to be and I realized that a skateboard doesn’t care who rides it or what tricks it will do, the person does and if people hate a type of person that they think shouldn’t be skateboarding I think those comments are from people who hate skateboarding. Luckily reading through these comments are positive and i hope more videos come out and put those hypebeast insta followers to shame because as a skater I don’t care if you can do all the tricks, it’s about personality and style and the way you carry yourself. The skaters In this love letter are definitely legends and I love them so much!

I e been skating since the mid 80s, I'm 44. So I'm a huge fan of his skating. His graphics were awesome and watching him skate in his 40s as a fat guy like me, who got sober after a lifetime like me, really would get me stoked to skate... Just got a new deck in mail today, anti hero, but Robbie Russo was only one in stock. Bought a Natas remake before this one cause I had one in 89...I know what the next one will be. Would've tracked anyone of his down 2 days ago, but was just doing what he says at end of every video...n working, raising kids ... R.I.P. Brother

Love Letters is the greatest ever skateboarding documentary and will forever be responsible for making the legacy of old/new school skateboarding accessible to EVERYONE. To one of the most (if not, the most) important figures in skateboarding, you are heavily missed. Thank you for everything

Skating has a long way to go but I'm glad it's finally moving with the times. I'm male, middle aged, white, hetero but I'm all about embracing the outsiders - that's the whole fucking point of skateboarding - it was meant to be a refuge from the mainstream world. Skateboarding was always for the marginalised and I used to hate that even within our "club for people who don't fit in clubs" people used to pick on others who they felt didn't fit in. So much respect for BA, Leo Baker, Elissa etc for standing up and saying "this is who I am".

So much heart here, love it.. If you have a problem with someone's sexual identity or how they express their self, it's not them who needs to change. Like Grosso says, be nice to each other and go skate.

What a Love Letter! Thank you Vans and RIP Gross. This was huge and hugely needed. I’m grateful he put himself out there and admitted that he had been part of the problem in the past. If you’re a certain age (born in 1978 here), you grew up in a time where homophobia was heavily ingrained in our culture (not just skateboarding). It was actually through skateboarding and playing music that I met the most open and tolerant friends, but these communities also had their share of dicks. I too always thought it was weird and ironic how so many skaters can be misogynistic and homophobic jock dickheads when it was mainly a refuge FROM misogynistic and homophobic jock dickheads. I’m glad things have been coming around in the past several years. Everyone is this video rips, but I especially like Stephen Ostrowski’s, Leo Baker’s and Cher Straubberry’s styles. Peace and love! ❤️🧡💛💚💙 - An Ally

One thing all skateboarders have In common regardless of sexuality, religion, ethnicity, etcetera is that there was a moment we all had that amazed us and got us into skating. Be it someone ollieing up a curb or an old board you find in the garage. I never want to deny someone of that feeling due to any prejudices.
