Very much concur with all that, Mr Fixit, Sir. Been at this playing stuff for 62+ years; I have nothing but respect for amp tech guys who really make the effort to get it as good as it can be done, and do it because they actually care about their craft.

As soon as I heard that the very low volume issue was on both channels, my first guess was an open ground connection on the phase inverter tail circuit. This is such a common problem with old Fender amps, and I’ve repaired it a number of times. The other thing that sometimes occurs is the 47 or 100 ohm tail resistor lifts up from one side, again due to tag board warpage. That resistor is especially vulnerable because it runs horizontally, unlike most of the components. I like to replace it with a new one that has strain relief “bumps” I bend into the leads, allowing the leads to flex with the board without pulling out of an eyelet.

That is top notch work. Sounds just as good as it looks. Even my wife knows when I'm watching you by the test licks you play. Grown quite fond of them. You can really tell how amps sou d so very different. Perfection is not obtainable, but pursuing excellence is.

Speaking of wires poppin' loose. I recently decided to change my 1964 (pre CBS) Deluxe Reverb heater connections to the virtual center tap. When I went to remove the green transformer heater wires at the pilot light, to clean up the connections before adding the 100 ohm resistors, I found that one of them was never soldered to the lug, it just fell of when I moved it, with no sign of solder ever being on it. I guess the pressure of the wire against the lug connected it, because I've owned this amp since the early 70's and have put 1,000's of hours on it. And no one ever messed with that part of the amp, repairs or loose light socket (which might have happened and caused it to break off, but there wasn't any wire bits soldered in except the heater wire). As far as I know. But have mercy, I've gigged, recorded, and toured with that amp with that wire not soldered to the lug. Wow!. Well, it's all good now. Not the first time I've found a wire in a Fender amp not soldered, or pulled from it's joint. Although I've never found a bad connection in a 50's Fender amp, just the 60's and 70's (but that's just my experience). Lupe knew how to solder. I always pull (gently) on all the connections with needle nose pliers when I open one up. I guess in the case of my old DR, I must have pulled on the solid heater wire and not the transformer twisted wire when I checked around. Live and learn.

Great sounding amp and very nice rebuild. One thing I've learned over the years is that stranded wire withstands movement a lot better than solod core. Couldn't tell for sure if that old ground was solid, but I always avoid it when I can and I never use it on tube sockets where pins wiggle, or in places where strength is important. All that extra surface area on stranded wire makes it both stronger when soldered and also less prone to fatigue breakage so long as you don't soak the solder too far up the wire.

I sold a 1965 Deluxe Reverb to a guy in the bay area (San Francisco) 1989 for $165. His son wanted it for a harp amp. He complained that the tremolo channel was not working. The amp was purchased in Orlando, FL, a shop that Tobis was working out of at the time.

I thought that Reverb tube was going to be a problem (Ok, I thought it would be THE problem) when I saw the little light show near its base at :44 when the amp came off stand-by. I assumed that wasn't normal behavior, but maybe "they all do that"? Excellent walk-through and "takes a big man" mea culpa. Separately, and just in kidding about delays, when I heard Lyle say "this amp came in 4 years ago," I expected the rest to be "and I'm just about done with it so it can go back to its owner."

Good catch! Always good to leave a curve in wiring and in metal tubing carrying fluids or gasses! I have an old-fashioned 300-watt soldering gun for just those kinds of solder pads. Makes fast work of chassis solder downs and even soldering to potentiometer cases before the rest of the part heats up.

I was at the dog park with my dogs just a couple hours before reading your comment, and some of us dog owners were having a discussion about the fact that the corners of dog parks should have a radius to the fence and not sharp 90 degree corners where a dog can feel trapped and hemmed in by the other dogs, which sometimes triggers a panicky "flight or fight" response. Fish in an aquarium will sometimes stick their nose in a corner and beat themselves half to death trying to escape. Even a live bait well in a boat is usually designed with rounded or radiused corners for this reason.

I don't know Lyle. There looked like enough of a little "S" bend in that ground wire to provide enough slack, but it was your work. I find fault with lots of work I did in the past, especially if it fails. Occasionally I realize some of the practices I have abandoned should be revisited.

@@pharmerdavid1432 , I've seen Lindley play a number of times, with his band ElRayo-X, doing duets with Ry Cooder, and Jackson Brown, and various percussionists. Aside from lap steel slide and violin, I've seen him play the oud, the Turkish Saz, bouzouki, various Teisco, Silvertone and Supro and other pawnshop guitars, and hybrid instruments such as a Vox teardrop bass with a bouzouki neck grafted onto it and earthquake sensors for pickups. He always strove to play something unexpected.

No need to apologise for the way you play, as you say you are poking and prodding the amp to see how it reacts so you can revitalise it. I am learning a lot even after 40 years of using this stuff daily, thankyou.

Feel bad that Lyle gets insecure about his guitar playing. People must be assholes in the comments. He's an amp tech not a guitar instructor. In theory he should continue to only play the same lick to compare and contrast to the same lick played on 1000s of other amplifiers. It's why people that demo amps or do shootouts use loop pedals or play the same lick. You can't compare scientifically without attempts at controlling variables. Now if he does demo videos every so often it would be nice to hear some variety.

Noticed a lot of people keep tube covers on some tubes, but not all. Where would you want to use the covers?
@MichaelSmith-rn1qw
@MichaelSmith-rn1qw Жыл бұрын
All of my Fender amps have tube covers on all of the non-power tubes, with one exception. My Super Twin Reverb has a couple of odd ball tubes (6C10 and 6CX8) which a regular tube shield wouldn't fit. However my newer Carvin Vintage 16 didn't come with any tube shields, and it doesn't seem to make any difference as far as stray electronical noise being picked up. At a minimum I would say the tube shields protect the tubes from getting broken if something were to bang up against them, like the end of a power cord or foot switch.
