Calendula flowers (Calendula officinalis) are an easy to grow herbal treatment for skin complaints ranging from eczema to minor cuts and sores. It’s safe and effective and there are many studies showing how calendula extract helps speed up the healing of minor skin injuries. There is also some research into its use in anti-aging. All the more reason to use calendula flowers as a natural medicine and skincare herb.
In this video, I share how I grow calendula flowers, how I harvest them, and how I use the petals to make calendula oil. Oil infused with calendula can be used as a skincare ingredient, as a safe herbal remedy, and even mixed into salad dressings and consumed. That’s how safe calendula is - you can eat it. It adds a natural golden color to baked goods, salads, and other dishes.

I’m a new Herbology student and came across your video while studying calendula. I’ve just read in my course material that as calendula has an emmenagogue action (stimulates menstruation) it should be avoided while pregnant. Thank you for your beautiful video though, I’m looking forward to growing in my new garden 💜🌿🌼

Love the video and information, Since your waiting on rain you should get a rain gutter and collect rain water on use for your garden. Add some banana peel in the water barrels as water plus natural fertilizer.

Great video....... Even in a zone 5 cold climate winter, Calendula will self seed in mid to late Spring in the area you've been growing it.

Thanks for this insightful video. I infuse a lot of herbs, leaves and flowers for body preparation also to eat a drink. To the question about the drying rack you used. I have googled the options and there are a few depending on where you are located. There are also known as herb, flower or pasta drying racks, there are different options and if you don’t want to buy one making one with pvc pipe or wooden dowel with elbow connectors from a hardware centre, garden centre or online stockist are easy. you can also use hanging herb racks or a Sheila maid and drape some cotton on top to hold the petals. A slatted wooden orange box or a slatted wood bathroom rack will also work.

I love calendula and use it to make salves. Your comment about the expiration date of oils is something I always questioned but you comment about basing the expiration date on the oil your using was BRILLIANT! I never heard that before. Thank you❤️

I heard it before but I also read that this applies only once you removed the herb. As long as you leave the herb in the oil, the oil will not go rancid.

Sadly, I'm no longer involved in the local allotments as the lady I helped gave up her plot earlier this year. I'll try and find space in the veg patch, although the soil there is pretty good after years of improvement!

I just found your channel! I was looking for info on growing and harvesting calendula. I have been making my own salve with dried flowers I bought online, but decided to try to grow my own this year. I started making the salve for my poison oak rashes (I'm highly allergic and get it second hand transfer). It works amazing for poison oak, poison ivy, and poison sumac. It keeps it from itching and heals it before it gets to the oozing stage. It works great as a diaper rash ointment and nursing salve. It also works better than neosporin and is great for bug bites, exzma, and other skin rash conditions.

This is my first year for growing Calendula flowers and I love them. I can see how they might spread, so dead heading is a must until it's time to save seeds. That box has been in the table for several months now. I left it there after some items were delivered and found one of the cats in it not long after. It's like THE PERFECT SIZE for cats. They adore it, lol We had a plot holder one year sow a small area of calendula flowers and then kind of give up on gardening. The next year the seeds from those few plants colonized a big area! It was wonderful

Thank you. I can’t wait to make a calendula salve. I have a question though. My calendula plants have powdery mildew. Can I spray them with diluted neem oil, water and soap? Will the neem affect the properties of the flowers? Thanks!

Neem oil has no effect on powdery mildew. It's an insecticide (kills insects) and I don't use it outside of the greenhouse for that reason. If the oil gets on bees or butterflies it can kill them too. As for your plants, harvest and use the flowers as long as you can then pull the plants. Powdery mildew is common in calendula and there's not much you can do once the plants are covered in it.

I've only started growing the dwarf varieties these past two years and leave them for the birds mainly. The petals can be used in beauty recipes so it's an idea though :)

Heya. Been thinking for a while to get and grow some Calendula myself. Mainly for internal use. I've read that it is very useful for muscle spasms if ingested. I figured it would be something nice to make in a drink format for my mom or anyone really. Either mixed into an orange juice or on its own even. Any recommendations for such a thing? Would you say use the petals or the whole head? Also been thinking of other flowers and plants I could grow and use that are consumable. Thanks!

If you're eating calendula, it's just the flower petals. However, the amount that you could eat probably won't have any medicinal effect. For that, you need to concentrate the active constituents in oil or as a tincture.

Hiya, i have always used shop bought calendula for cuts and bruises but i was not aware that you can eat it. Could you make a bath oil from it? I like your cat. Is it a Russian Blue? I have a blue and a white version.

You most certainly could make a bath oil from it. The infused sweet almond oil I make in the video could be poured directly in the bath. Louis is a Korat but I love Russian Blues too -- yours must be a real sweetie :)

Ive been searching all day for recipes for marigold/mango kombucha. There just isn't anything out there. I think I'm going to just throw the flowers in the kombucha after I brew it. Would you recommend the whole flower or just the petals?

I have a question...I made an infused oil with calendula and chamomile flowers with grapeseed, olive, coconut, and MCT oils. I applied the left over batch on my legs and had an allergic reaction with red spots in the area...I am curious if you have ever heard of this happening? I have used all ingredients before in different uses and applications(as teas and tinctures), so I was a bit surprised to see this happen. Thoughts? Thanks for the video!!

Have you found any answers to your reaction a couple years ago? "She is of the Woods" and "Rain Country" youtube channels also talk about infused oils and precautions when combining ingredients. We have learned a lot from them as well.

I used to pick Calendula during summer vacation with a bunch if other ladies... We all has smooth hands after the harvest. The resin form the flowers were so healing. My question is you had two types of Calendula you made the infused oil with...the darker gravy ones you said would create a golden yellow infused oil...if you only used the lighter colored calendula would the oil be clear? I received a 4 oz bottle of Calendula infused oil and was disappointed it was clear. When I looked up the product on Amazon the marketing photos showed a golden yellow oil in the dropper but my oil was clear and seemed to lack any faint calendula smell. So I wondered if they used a lighter colored variety of Calendula flowers than what I have used in the oast. I know there is a specific variety that has mire healing resin...I believe resin us in the Latin name.

If you used a yellow calendula, the oil would be golden but not the rich color of that made with orange flowers. Personally, I always make homemade calendula oil. You have complete control over the quality of oil and flowers used, and it's far cheaper. Companies online could be using old and poor quality ingredients, which probably explains the product you bought. Here's how to make your own, though: lovelygreens.com/how-to-make-calendula-oil/

It has sun all day in that position. My climate is mild though -- lower summer temperatures plus full sun equals bumper calendula harvests

I understand that the expiration date of the oil you use is the date to stick to. But what about the product I make? How do I calculate how long it will last in a soap or salve?

Using an ingredient in soap or other skincare does not prolong its shelf life. So to answer your question, the closest original shelf life of any of the ingredients you use to make a product is the new product's shelf life. For example, you make soap and almost all of the oils used have a one year shelf life. One oil only has a shelf life that's six months, though. That means your finished soap has a six month shelf life.

I just started growing and harvesting calendula to insist the oil. I have noticed some works on them at times and when I'm drying them any that I miss picking out, leave their poop behind. If some of that ends up in the jar is it ok?

Sunlight contains UV light that will bleach and degrade herbal material. Avoid it when drying any herbs or flowers.

No, you can't and I personally would not touch the stuff. it's not oil, as in the lipids extacted from vegetables. Mineral oil is a chemical created by refining crude oil - petroleum.

Hi. I grew calendula this year. I love it. Started out at yellow flowers but are now changing to oranges-beautiful.. My question is; when I cut the flowers to dry them, the heads are all turning to seed. Can I use those heads to make my oil infusions. Do they have the same medicinal properties? Thx
