Tintagel is one of the only places in Cornwall that allows the Van Life Community to stay over night in a number of their car parks, but how do the locals really feel about their small village being taken over by van lifers in the summer months?

I love Tintagel. At the end of the day Cornwall should realise we people with campervans bring money into it. Yes there are a few who don’t clean up but most of us are decent and care for the environment we leave behind. Cornwall is beautiful. It’s a pity Newquay seems to do its best to deter campers. Tintagel does it right.

I know that during the summer months, Dorset, Cornwall & Devon are extremely busy, and it is difficult for everyone. I do however feel that the councils could open up their Car parks for overnight campers during the "off season" as this would bring valuable income to the local economy, I think if you spoke to local business owners then they would welcome this. Come on Councils, open up your car parks for overnight stays, say from October to April, Just charge an overnight fee. Simple.

Good video mate, good to see you have a few beers and chill! Tintagel is a beautiful, magical place, and glad that the locals see the campervans as a postive, and good for trade. A responsible camper is a bonus for any destination, and definitely should be encouraged. I am beginning to seriously think about a van or a campervan, this country has so much to see and explore!

Good one - Your 2 interviewees had Northern 'Corniche' Accents. Someone who worked at Tintagel English Heritage says in the height of the Summer they take £60k - EACH Day, however this Tintagel Magnet does wonders for the community as a hole - the coastline is spectacular. Almost ALL of these funds are sent to other English Heritage Sites. Recommend visiting the Large Hotel that overlooks Tintagel and spending the money saved on their facilities, with an awesome Sundowner overlooking Tintagel castle. The Cornwall County Car park charge is fair and of course, this money does get put back into the community coffers.

I think everyone in the van community needs to look after each other regarding these these type of sites. Don’t hide if you see a van or abusing the facilities or leaving rubbish just tell them because if you don’t we will all take the blame. Equally whenever I arrive and leave I always try and pick up some litter or improve the area in a small way. If we all do this for each other these places will be perfect for the locals.

I hate crowds, so off season is great for me visiting places like this, shame that in a lot of places camper vans are seen as a problem, pubs realise we're all P**s heads so more are opening their carparks for an overnight stay😁 Councils just hate anyone enjoying themselves🙄😏 Bet 90% of the locals don't drink in the pubs, they're just sat indoors curtain twitching with their supermarket bought wine in hand & complaints hotline on speed dial? Great videos, you speak proper, very eloquent👍

problem we have here in far west cornwall is that we have excellent free car parks in st Just and Pendeen and too many tourists leave their cars there for 1-2 weeks while they fly to the isles of scilly rather than pay for the quite cheap airport and ferry parking, which leaves no spaces for locals. They are putting barriers in to keep out vans now. They sort of missed the pint.

I am a campervan owner and I stay in campsites which allows me to use the facilities. eg showers toilets and waste disposal. My objection to this wild camping as it is called is where do you dispose of your toilet waste grey waste and rubbish. That is the purpose of campsites so that you dont dump your waste in public toilets and public waste bins.Campsites are not expensive especially as a fortune is spent on the van!,😢

Great video Shaun we love that part of cornwall. Tintagel You never said how the IPA Toast beer was. ? Also what happened when you set up the van for night time and when you came back from the meal. the side screen was gone, 😂🤣 yes we do note things like this. To be honest the ford transit is a lovely size and i can see why the space is not used to its full potential and someone doesn't fit a bathroom lounge and kitchen with an elevating rear bed. Front swivel seats it would make an amazing layout.just my thoughts. It was great to see you meet up with another fellow van lifer. He had a good trip coming from my home town nottingham. Theres a bit of a pattern here. When i was young, my family used to take me on holiday to park in cornwall, staying in our touring caravan. Because the journey was long and the roads were less good, this often meant stopping overnight on the way there and back. We almost always did so, by pulling over to a lay by at the side of the road, in order to let the driver sleep for a few hours. We would then have breakfast in the caravan (or in the cafe if there was one) get washed and dressed, before proceeding on our way, leaving nothing behind. Back in those days, there were decent lay-bys every few miles. Some were better than others. Some had toilets, some didnt. Some had cafes, some didnt. Some were literally an extra lane right next to the highway, while others were seperated from the carriageway by a grass verge or even better, completely spaced away and iut of sight and sound from the road. In any case, now I take my children to the same place. En route I've noticed that over the years, those lay-bys have been removed and put beyond use by the local authorities. Sometimes its clearly because a better development has come along, or the road has been widened, but other times its perfectly clear that its been malociously infilled, and made useless by the dumping of gravel or concrete blocks. This phenomenon is much worse within Cornwall itself than along the route, and its so short sighted. There will always be some people who dont want to pay 5 star hotel prices to stay in England. Those people still want to come along and spend money on the only real industry Cornwall now has left (tourism), and the open obvious hostility to campers and caravanners is so self destructive. I completely understand that there could be those who would misuse the lay by, and perhaps make it their temporary home for a period of weeks, rather than using them for their original purpose - a place to park and rest for a while. If that is the problem, the solution would be to signpost and enforce waiting time limits of say 12 hours. As it happens, recently ive been lucky enough to be able to pay for a hotel while making that journey, but if I had a campervan or a caravan, and was unable to stop and rest for a few hours during the journey, guess what? I would take my holiday, and my money elsewhere, for example in Europe where the weather is often better and the prices almost always lower. I just happen to love Cornwall, but that live has its limits. Tintagel is a beautiful village and one I've always enjoyed visiting.

Really depends on how many vans and how much space is available. Despite all the protests of the “it’s the minority” there are still too many vans ignoring no overnight parking signs and causing problems for locals, not to mention the rubbish and sometimes human waste left for others to clean up. There’s a car park not far from me that has 35 spaces allocated for vans, yet they counted 95 staying there overnight. Locals are now calling for a total ban.

Problem with A/T tyres, people don't do their research. The "popular" 2 which people go for can aquaplane badly. You need something which is more road biased. Mine are 60/40 road biased. The only time I lose a bit of traction is if I have to stop on a steep hill on a lane to let people by.

What kind of insurance do you need for a van like this? I’m thinking contents wise.

I really like your content, but your main camera makes watching very painful. It's so jittery. Like image stabilization that can't keep up. Absolute video quality means nothing if you can't hand hold it, and I really think your camera needs a tripod. I know there are loads to choose from and stuff, but most higher end compacts will do much better than this. Even older used ones. Like the Sony ZV-1 (not the ZV-1F! That has a fixed 20mm eqivalent lens!) or a Panasonic LX-100. Especially the Pana is great in low light. And REALLY great as a still camera as well. The ZV-1 has mic input, though, and is geared towards vloggers.

Welcome is a free air in any European country. in this country you more welcome on any beach in a dinghy with no passport than a camper van we should be ashamed

There is a field just after the hotel that the farmer opens for overnight stays 🚐 not sure if open over winter as wet grass could be an issue but it overlooks the coast line and looks fabulous - I must go 😊🐾🚐 been meaning to for ages

You say van's can park overnight in in most car parks in Tintagel, but do you that they would let the odd caravan park overnight as well.

From what I can remember to park with a caravan or trailer you have to pay double and I think you can only park in the day time

You wonder why all council car parks don’t let ye park overnight, I assume it’s because locals would usual react badly to it.. financially though you’d think councils would be all over it..

Buying a ticket for overnight stay would probably show intent not to drive after drinking. I am not a solicitor however, I only play one on the internet.....

You have to be sensible about this, you really need to be somewhere you are allowed to stay overnight, so no possibility of being moved on, but also, the Police have to be able to show that you "intended" to drive off, in order to use "Drunk in charge" laws. When you are in bed asleep, and you have paid for a overnight ticket, it is pretty obvious you do not intend to drive.

I think it's actually drunk in charge of a motor vehicle and several people have been prosecuted for sleeping in the back seat of their cars on the side of the road. If you have your keys on you then you are "in charge.'

Places that save no overnight parking are usually boy racers dream sites too. If I were the locals, I would rather have a few vans parked around taking up the space than a load of whooping yobos setting light to stuff and zooming about regardless of the noise or danger. Most genuine van campers have 'pick up and bin' tools to go around tidying after themselves and others. It almost always local day visitors who leave rubbish and break things. When we visited cumbria we watched a family feeding apples to the horses in a field with please do not feed the horses signs and another group burning stuff by the lake which was still there after they left along with dirty nappies just left laying. These people come in cars and leave the same day.

I dont get negative attitudes to campers...surely better to have visitors to an area stay in a campervan than encouraging more airbnb/holiday homes.

Do you really blame Them ? VanLife is very popular, and locals treat vanlifers like gipsies. You are welcome over there, but for a price. I think it's hatred more towards free way of life.
