Records come in three speeds: 33 1/3 rpm (sometimes abbreviated to just 33 rpm), 45 rpm and 78 rpm. RPM stands for Revolutions Per Minute. Records come in three standard sizes: 7-inch, 10-inch, and 12-inch. This video explains the differences between the sizes and speeds. Thanks for watching. There are also 12 inch 45s, 10 inch 33s, and kids records in 5 inch and 6 inch sizes at 78 rpm. Good introductory video for newcomers!

There were also 16rpm records. Mostly for spoken word (audio books) or pre-recorded studio interviews / segments for radio stations.

@@Abandonedacc0They have more noise. The 1950's shellacs are 65 micrometer, stereo records are 18 micrometer, older shellacs 90 micrometer.

And where is the switch, what makes the stylus larger for shellacs?

Thank you for this video! I’m only a beginner and I just bought my very first record player and a few vinyl records. I’m just wondering, is it normal for the record to go up and down while it’s playing? I’m assuming it’s a little warped, it’s nothing crazy but my 12 inch records do move exactly like in this video while they’re being played. Any feedback would be much appreciated!

If you bought the record used, it’s probably warped. When buying used records, make sure they are flat. That being said, what’s most important is how it sounds when it’s being played. Does it sound bad?

This explains it: Warped records are caused by excessive pressure, intense heat or a combination of poor conditions such as improper storage and direct sunlight exposure. Vinyl records can warp under pressure, especially when they're stored improperly for long periods of time.

If you google it, there are people who claim they have methods to flatten the record. You could try those methods. Best bet is to try to help at buy them in good shape.

I bought the records brand new! That being said though, they were delivered via what could be considered the equivalent of FedEx of our country so I can only imagine what conditions they were left in. I have only a few options in my country so I kind of have to deal with what I have available. Also, they sound close to perfect, the sound is really crisp and there’s no skipping or crackling noises coming from either the record player or the records themselves. Thank you so much for your reply and advice though, I will try to purchase a special device made to fix warped records, I have found a few good options since doing this on my own behalf could damage the records and the grooves.
