Being a gardener, I use this method all the time. I use 2 tennis balls in my sock and 1 tennis ball in another sock. Two seems to work better on my neck & shoulder blade area. Makes some cracking noise, but feels so good. You are right about getting rid of the pain going down the side of the leg. I get deep into the glut muscle and rotate it into the hip.
