A 10,000 Gal. gravity water filter review for the Berkey Water Filters using the red dye test. This low cost water filter for home usage continues to impress as a home water filter system for low cost water filtration and increase confidence as an emergency water filter system for prepping off grid or on grid, in your city homestead or rural country homestead. I hope you find this test and Black Berkey carbon filter review helpful and maybe agree that this is one of the best water filter system for drinking cleaner safer water during good times or during SHTF. I recommend the Black Berkey water filter as a Top Prep. Using my method to maintain and clean your black berkey filters using distilled vinegar and distilled water should build confidence that you will be doing so without damaging the carbon filters. Let me know what your think.

I love that you are proving that the rate of life to a filter depends on the source filtered and the method of cleaning. This would be true for most filters. It’s nice that the berkey system can be cleaned to extend its life.

This video is a treasure, and you're my new Berkey expert :-) Thank you so much for taking the time and being so meticulous in sharing this with us. I love how you aren't one of the "sheeple," just taking whatever "they" say as the truth or expertise. You question, question, question. So admirable. You're sharp, authentic and good ppl. And genius how you came up with a way to counter this company's trying to exploit their cash cows, er, customers. Also, remembering how hellish it was to prime those filters, and wondering why the company doesn't suggest installing the filters in this reverse way for that purpose. Oh, nevermind, ha ;-) (they sell a priming tool)

Watched your Berkey cleaning video, and it is very much chemistry-based. Your technique of dissolving the CaCO3 with the dilute vinegar is exactly the right thing to do, it will open the pores in the carbon composite filter. I will be doing the same when I buy my Berkeys. I will, however, try to do a slight positive pressure on the back wash, and might try DI (deionized) water instead of distilled, if it's not too expensive. Otherwise everything you're doing is right on. Oh, by the way, I'm a retired engineer too. (Edited) - I have the capability to test my well water for all heavy metals, coliform bacteria, TDS, hardness, pH, and many, many other organic (THM, etc) and inorganic contaminants. I will test the filtered water for all of these.

Hi seekrengr , I just bought my Big Berkey, tried to prime with that button I received, that just did not work, water from faucet was wider than button. So I tried water bottle and squeezed water into filter, finally saw the water beads ,I filled water after installing filters etc. I tested water with TDS EZ tester ... (as I make colloidal silver and need to test water.) and water then tested 387, second fill 360, now its showing 354. This is still very high..not sure what I did wrong? Ideal drinking water is 0-50 written back of my TDS meter....thank you for helping me out.

Love your videos! Guessing when you're finished flushing the filters the water comes out clear. Your thoroughness is fabulous - including how you rerun a 2nd batch of distilled water ith vinegar after the 1st reverse flow and then, place the filters as they belong and do yet ANOTHER regular flitering (to throw out) BEFORE drinking. Fantastic!! Thank you for your openness, your honesty and earnestness. I know I am about 2 years late but at least I found this now when I did.

Thank you and yes....priming is to force the trapped air out but that will eventually happen anyway. The filters will work faster if primed though and it's very easy to do it by doing a reverse flow cycle then discard the water...install the correct way and run another cycle and discard that water as well. Then you should be good to filter and drink there after with the air and factory dust removed. ;) Cheers!

I purchased the Berkey only because of your videos! I didn't bother with the red dye test thinking I'd contaminate the filters, so flushed the filters with tap water only. After about 2 months, my daughter tried the water and said it tastes like metal (I haven't really been drinking it myself). So today I decided to do the red dye test and the reverse flow isn't showing any red dye coming out. Regardless, I have you saved as a print out, frame by frame in case I need to revert back to your cleaning method, if (or when?) the power is out. Much appreciated from Canada!

Hello Tom...I am brand new to the Berkey system. In fact, I just ordered my Berkey filter two days ago and should get it tomorrow. I've watched both your cleaning and red dye test videos and very much appreciate the time you devoted to each video. They are very helpful. I have a question though, in your red dye test, after the test, you reverse flowed water to rinse the dye from the filters. To speed up the process, could I re-prime the filters to force the dye out of the filters? Thanks again for your videos. I admire your honesty!
@3basketliving
@3basketliving 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Joe, You could try to do that but when I do the dye test then I use the same cleaning process that I show to take advantage of the abilities of the vinegar and the distilled water to hopefully pull out the dye or most of it. If I just use my tap (well) water full of minerals or whatever then I don't seem to see near as much of the dye coming out of the filters. Hope this helps.

I'm wondering if it is possible to stack another container on top of your upper chamber to give yourself double the capacity. That would mean you would only need to fill the container half as often! Of course, I guess you'd need to leave the spigot open and have a second chamber to catch the water coming out below, otherwise your lower chamber would overflow. But, hey, it's an idea. It would be essentially making a smaller system function like a larger one. Have you ever heard of anyone doing that? (I'm a rookie who is shopping for a water purification system. You've convinced me to buy a Berkey, but I haven't actually used one yet. Hence, this suggestion of mine may just be a silly rookie idea.)
@3basketliving
@3basketliving 3 жыл бұрын
It's not a rookie idea. It's the filters themselves that do the work and all that pretty stainless is nice and easy to clean but in the end it just looks much nicer on your kitchen countertop. People purchase just the filters and use their own containers like 5 gal. buckets so basically to achieve the 'silly idea' that you mention. Just something to think about. ;)

Okay, that's exactly what I've been wondering about. Wouldn't the red food dye contaminate my filters? I have MCS (multiple chemical sensitivities) so my water needs to be safe. The distilled water and vinegar make sense to me. I use vinegar for cleaning. It works wonders. As for filter longevity, I'm guessing it's to protect themselves and to keep us buying!

Their site says Black Berkey elements are so powerful, they are unique in their ability to mechanically remove red food coloring from water ~ this of course has to be constrained way of saying that it gets most of it ○ However we should abandon concerns as to contamination and just change them whenever label directions say to do so - I am studying this filter thing-currently I have a large carbon filter which has been there several years and have noticed no accumulations that are of concern ○ Search shows Commercial food dye FD&C Red 40 (Allura Red Ac Dye) was supplied ... have a spherical morphology with average particle size of 4 microns ~ other places show 2 microns • Their www says · found that at the .2 to .3 microns range our filter removed more particulate than the other brand but does not say what brand ~ my feed water has vastly greater than what this would be yet the filter remains full-flow

.@38:52 What language are you speaking at the end? Does that mean goodbye? Your video is good and I don't think that last part has anything to do with the filter but I'm just curious because I heard you say that word also in your other video about cleaning the filter. Thanks

Thank you for the video. Quick question for you, are you happy with the unit size you went with, would you recommend the unit you went with or would you have chosen one larger or smaller? Thanks
@3basketliving
@3basketliving 2 жыл бұрын
The size suits me just fine but going bigger and just using the # of filters you require to keep up with your demand needed. If you went with a smaller unit that can only fit 2 filters then you could always use a different size container like a 5 gal. bucket for the bigger volume of water needed.

: )Hi again my Friend also wondering what do you think about running just one filter in the unit, in your opinion would the flow be too slow? Thank you
@3basketliving

It depends on how many men or women the unit is expected to serve in a given time frame of course.

I watched the first 40 min video, kinda skipped this one. So the summary is, once yo do your Red Dye test, run the filters in reverse to remove the Red Dye from them.

Thanks for the video. Little confused. You're adding 1tbspn of dye per gallon of water. Berkey says to use 1tspn per gallon of water.
