Best channel for this on YT hands down. No purple backlit room, no looking at irrelivent revenue over a month, no selling shovels to the goldrush. Just good honest BS free information on how to improve your understanding of how etsy works so you can apply it to your own model. 10/10 would subscibe again!

This is BRILLIANT!!! I had two Etsy stores and both were unique. I didn't see anyone else doing what I was doing, but my margins were terrible and it wasn't working. So, I have rebranded one as a digital shop and I'm listening to all the 'gurus' and I can already tell I was headed down another wrong road. I am really going to sit with what you have told us here and try to take it on board and get myself steered in the RIGHT direction. Thank you so much for this!! (Ohhh, and someone I hired to look at my shops told me to drop the inventory to 5 or fewer and I always felt that was wrong. I'm off to correct that right now!) Thanks!!!!

I wish I had found your channel sooner! Thanks for your down to earth wisdom (and no nonsense reality check). I opened my digital shop at the end of June, and currently have 50 active products. I have mostly been experimenting with items for my store (only one sale so far). However, you have inspired me to focus on creating supplies for artists, designers and writers based (instead of making templates for busy mums). I also made the mistake of focusing on seasonal products for Halloween & Black History Month, so time to go back to Evergreen items.

This is the second video of yours that I've watched, absolutely brilliant and honest information. I've already started changing my tags and titles, and I am working on two custom niche market areas to add to my store via POD, I don't think I'll be able to have both of them active, in time for Xmas. But that's fine for me, I can hit the new year running. I'm working through the printful training courses and they are helping. I also have hand made stuff on my shop (chainmaille jewellery, customised leather gloves and horror dolls) the POD is just a way to bulk up my listings (just over the 100 items so far and another 20 in the background to be publishedthis week) Thank you for these videos, it is disheartening, when you put so much work in and seem to get no where. There is light at the end of the tunnel I guess.

I started my Etsy store off ALL WRONG but have been doing one listing per day, designing products in chunks each week as I see how previous ones do, turned on global shipping, am putting an option to gift wrap with a personalized card (I make plant hangers, so Idk about personalizing the product itself), and added some less expensive products (suncatchers). I also feel very strongly that my ideas are solid and there is a need and a desire for them. I'm planning on offering seed kits for greens as one of my new products and I hope there's an interest in them during these financially tight times. I love the thought of contributing to better nutrition and therefore health in tough times. Anyway, just wanted to say Thank you for the help with my store! I was thinking of how a product I already have up could be done so much better. I was shying away from doing it asap because I was trying to get 100 products up. You helped me to understand that though the number of products is important offering a niche product within those numbers or higher will make the store successful in the long run. I started Etsy just after the new year hit... your mentioning of the fall to winter sales being where things change IF one has a niche product changed my mind on the IF I get 100 products and see no sales thereafter I'll drop Etsy. Thank you. I found your video very honest and encouraging. I will get to work on bettering that niche product and stick it out for the fall/winter of 2024.

Thanks so much. My Etsy store is only 3 weeks old and I've already implemented quite a few of your tips. Realising it takes a while to gain traction and you need at least 100 listings helps a lot and takes the pressure off while still requiring plenty of work. As of today I have 31 listings. I've already created the listing I'm adding tomorrow and I'll try to get in the habit of batch creating and saving listings ready to go to make one a day, rather than 3 here, 2 there. I've only watched three of your videos so far but I feel like I have an actual strategy now. Thank you.

Hi, Nick. I watched a lot of your videos, not all, but... everything you say makes a lot of sense. I just opened my store 2 weeks ago. There is a problem with having 100 items with depth stock for any store, especially for handmade one of a kind things. I offer dining and kitchen home textiles, like tablecloths, runners , napkins, and so on. But, my message is unique, one of a kind, things, I do a few as a collection and offer my customer to own something, which is limited edition. So, for me, having 100 items with 100s of each is impossible. How I can accommodate your advice to my situation? I can do personalization and gift ability, no problem. So digital and POD are way different aproach than handmade physical products.

I don't know how many stores I've seen that carry the same artwork or digital art quotes! The emphasis without a doubt has to be providing something unique and of value to people. Many of the personalised stores have the same artwork and it is quite disappointing to see copycats or people using copyrighted images or lots of public domain which is unchanged and used as is! All so discouraging for a person starting out. I created adult coloring books on Amazon way back and hit the bestsellers for a few months. Then added POD repurposing the designs. I have been looking at Etsy for some time but most likely not going to go on the platform! Being a lapsed graphic designer I only have one social media platform like Pinterest which reached 6.7m monthly views over 4 months ago. It is now hovering at 5m purely because of the amount of work I put into my boards and KWs over the last few years. I've posted nothing for many months and it is still working with the algorithms. I plan on experimenting with my own e-commerce store and linking that up to Pinterest to capture some of those viewers and converting them into buyers! It would be nice if I can achieve selling to a fraction of those numbers! I've spent 4 years away from the industry and like I said only maintained my social media platform. I've been researching like mad to see where I will go from here and pretty much come to my own conclusion referred to in the previous paragraph to stick with the books and POD (original artwork) and use my own website/e-commerce and social media account to sell. However, I have to admit the reliance on any platform you don't own is a big risk!

Thanks for the tip on low stock. In one of my Etsy stores that sells POD items, some of which are kind of expensive, I was editing the stock to kind of control how many could sell at one time since they need to be paid up front. But I see your point and have changed them all back. Fingers crossed someone doesn't come in and try to buy 500 framed posters which means I'll need to go get a new credit card! :D On a serious note this is one of the things about POD that no one ever really explains which is that it is not free to start and it's not a money-printing machine. It has a financial risk just like any other business other than digital. Not remotely concerned about selling all 999 digitals of something but a high quantity purchase of a pricier POD item is a risk.

I hope what you say about having original designs is true! I feel like the other “experts” only recommend emulating the best sellers’ designs, which makes me think what a boring market we have. I have 125 pod shirt designs in my Etsy shop and after two months still don’t have an organic sale. I will have to get over myself and get some personalized shirt offerings up. Thanks for your advice!

Hi, thanks again. Your suggestions make a lot of sense and we've definitely heard them before! Maybe you could discuss a bit more some strategies/tips for scaling up to 100+ as it sounds simple but some people (including me!) may be finding this hard. For example there may be ways to focus on making variations of similar items rather than designing 100 completely unique items? Also, is it best to focus on things that depend on relatively few different supplies? You may have other suggestions that we haven't heard yet. Thanks!

I'll give you an example that I'm doing right now. I have a POD store and I'm working on expanding it to 100 items. I have some t-shirts that have already sold, so I know they're proven and these are the ones that I'm expanding. Each t-shirt has 4-6 color variations. So I duplicate the listing so that each listing features one color. Every lifestyle and shirt picture is in the one color, but I end with a picture that shows all the shirt colors in one photo. You can buy any color you want from all of the listings, but the pictures and color attribute focus on one color. In this way, if someone is searching for a black t-shirt, my listing will show up. If my primary picture is a white t-shirt, someone might pass it by without ever seeing it's also available in black. That's why you want to duplicate listings. I have also had an inquiry about larger sizes. In my primary t-shirt brand, they only go up to a 3X, and it costs a couple of collars more than a 1X (2X is also more expensive, but not nearly as much). Rather than charge people more for larger sizes, I stop the choice at a 2X (I just take a bit of a hit on my profit for 2X's). But I'm working on doing new listings--again, for products that have already sold--in plus sizes. I found a different t-shirt brand that's cheaper and goes up to 5X, so I can charge the same price for the larger shirts as the smaller shirts. I do these the same way I do the regular ones, but I use plus size models in the lifestyle photos and I use "plus-size," etc. as a keywords. I also include a picture letting the customer know these are available in a smaller size (with a link in the description to that listing), and I add a picture and link to the regular listing letting people know I have sizes available up to 5X in a separate listing. You can build up a store pretty quickly if you have a different listing for each color option and different size categories.

Hi, so all markets are created by leaders and followers, and to some extent everyone copies everyone else, it is the nature of business, 'copy something and make it better'. However I always strive to get my clients to be different and try new things because your business niche needs leaders, in whatever form that may take.

The sales I have been able to make are from friends and family, so I can't really count those numbers. I would love to offer more items, but I simply can't afford such a risk as a single mom. One problem I have noticed of late in my field ( journals and sewing notions) is a mass seller based in US but shipping from China. Huge marketing push sponsoring sewing YTers to do 'unboxing'. Examples....stickers I buy locally for $8, T is offering for $3.80. How is Etsy countering this marketing giant? I refuse to buy from T, but the $$ seems to attract buyers 😢 Great video again.

I opened my store in February 2023. I'm selling T-shirts and hoodies for a very specific niche, and I've already come up with 200 designs. My daily views are quite low, and my sales are too. I am conflicted about the deep stock suggestion. I have a store with ~200 listings, all my products are made to order, I list each listing with 4-6 (to avoid a pattern) items in stock. 1) so not to overwhelm/paralyze my store if somebody suddenly decided to buy more than 5 items from one listing. 2) the red letters under the title saying, for example, "Only 2 left and in 1 cart" acts as a FOMO trigger for the customer, therefore I justify my choice of low stock listings to be a psychological tactic. And I believe Etsy understands this too, that's why there's such an indicator in red letters. It's circumstantial, and I call bs on deep stock suggestion.
@etsyconsultant
@etsyconsultant 4 ай бұрын
Hi there, thanks for your comment. With my 9 years of being an Etsy consultant the method of deep stock is mostly successful. It's highly unlikely that a customer will buy more than 5 of one item, and in the worst case scenario you can let the customer know that there is only 1 available and offer alternatives. I hear what you are saying about the FOMO trigger, and as I said before, on the whole my method is usually more successful than the scarcity model. At the end of the day you need to do what's best for you and your store.

Thanks for the really helpful advice. (I’ve learnt so much!) The only thing that I struggle with is with stock levels when hand making items for my store. I couldn’t make 50 copies of every listing/ option in the listings, and then increasing to the 100 listing goal. Some of my items have 4,5,6 options, so this would not be possible to make/ have that many in stock. Any advice for how to run a shop like this?

Thanks for the great advice and tough love! I understand what you are saying about having more than just a handful of each item for sale, but when you are just starting, it's difficult to predict which items will sell the most and are worth investing enough time and money into to have stock depth. Is it OK to start with 5 or so when you are just beginning or what would you recommend?
@etsyconsultant
@etsyconsultant 8 ай бұрын
Hi, and thanks for your question. You can only do so much research and preparation. Part of this process is opening your store, growing, and then being very focused on what the customers start to tell you they are interested in. Traffic in to items, favorites on items, and sales are all good indicators of where your "what is working" lies. I would recommend you plan to get to 100 items, slowly if you like, but get there. As you head past 60, 70 items I would expect you to have made a few sales, if people want to buy what it is that you are selling. I hope that helps.

I sell supplies and when I listed 100 to 150 items I saw a lot more sales. I never thought I could get up to that many, now I’m at almost 300. But my items are only around three dollars so I still don’t make that much yet. ~$500/month But I definitely agree on the 100 listings that’s when I totally saw a difference.

Thank you very much for another great video. I have just over 100 items in my shop, however I must admit there are only about six items that have stock depth. The majority of the things I sell are one off designs so I would love to know what to do about these? Maybe if you could do a video on this that would help lots of people too? It took me ages to get to 100 items but I did exactly what you said and added one a day (from about 38 I think it was). I have since had two sales, which is nice. Maybe my problem is that I sell a range of different items from printed mounted photos, candles and fine art ceramic? Should I just stick with one thing? If so, I would not know what to choose???
