I blow dry on the lowest setting now because the leave in conditioner that I use says it on the bottle. At first I ignored it, but then I tried it and it works best on low heat. It takes a little longer, but it’s worth it.

In my opinion having only started blow drying for 3 weeks and only having 2b-c hair (which tbh is why I'm straightening because my hair either has to be forced into being curly or forced straight). I did used to have 3a hair, and I can say that the amount of hair I loose from detangling has significantly decreased. It's just easier to detangle straight hair 🤷🏻‍♀️ so there's that too consider too.

Hi Afope! Love your videos, thanks for all your hard work. I use the revair as well and i initially intended to only stretch my hair with it on the cool setting, but it's not stretching my ends so it's been suggested i just use heat which i'm very aversive to. I wash my hair every 2 weeks and plan to use the dryer every wash day on low heat with a heat protectant because stretching will help prevent knots and makes detangling easier. do you think this is a good idea indefinitely (the use of 60-70 degrees C heat roughly 2x a month to stretch hair that is)? hope this query makes sense

I hope we can re-visit that idea about damage to the cell membrane complex. I've been reading research all morning to figure out how to prevent that. Is the cell membrane complex just ceramides? Or does applying ceramides to the hair prevent damage to it, or does it just mimic the membrane as it fades, kind of like Olaplex: Glue edition? So many questions.

What is your opinion on indirect heat? I have stopped using blow dryers/diffusers all together 2 years ago and use a hooded dryer instead (never on high). I use it weekly to dry my wash and gos (it takes over a to dry day without some form of heat). I haven't noticed any damage or loosened curls personally and my hair seems a lot better now, but I wanted to know if they have the potential to cause any harm. I was thinking about stretching my hair using roller sets instead of a blow dryer when I want a stretched style.

Maybe the damage experienced on the air dried hair was caused by hygral fatigue seeing as though it would have been wet for the longest period of time.
@AfopeAtoyebi
@AfopeAtoyebi 3 жыл бұрын
I thought this too, but I guess they also would need to consider the hair porosity type, because hygral fatigue damage is worse for higher porosity hair as the hair swells more and contracts more quickly because of the porosity. It's less likely to be the case if the hair they used was low porosity hair. But porosity isn't something they controlled for so sadly, I guess we could never know 😫

@@AfopeAtoyebi - Hi Afope. I know this is an older video, but I was wondering if you've come across any other studies that mentioned damage caused by air drying? I find this really fascinating! Here I was thinking that air drying was the healthiest thing I could do for my hair. I don't use any heat at all and don't over-manipulate my hair, but I've still encountered unexplained breakage from time to time. Perhaps it comes from the fact that I strictly air dry. If air drying actually causes damage, then perhaps using minimal heat would be a better option. I have to think about that. Anyway, I'd love to hear more of your thoughts on damage from air drying.

@@Kindred04 oh yeah, I just had a realisation yesterday night! You know how your face feels awfully dry when you get out of the showers and let it simply air dry? We put moisturisers and creams to protect the skin on the face right after the shower. My guess is, if we put some serum/hair oil on the hair when its still damp, and let it air dry, the damage can be lessened! I can't be sure, but I feel as though my hair quality worsened when I didn't use my hair oil. Ever since I've been using my hair oil consistently, I think the damage on my my ends is halted (but I can't be sure).

Yayyy! Welcome girl! Because your hair is in braids/plaits, it looses moisture at a much slower rate so you don’t need to do more than a light weekly spritz with a leave-in mist to “top up” and you can clean your scalp with a diluted cowash mix and some cotton balls and “rinse”/clean off the excess product with wet cotton balls. Hope this helps?

Love this, this is super helpful. I had heard of this study that wet hair causes more damage than blowdrying it correctly but I didnt know that making sure you dont go from room temperature to high heat was damaging so thats super helpful. But I am super confused 4-6 blowouts per year seems so low, I wash my hair 3 times a week, so I wouldnt even be able to blow out my hair every other month. Or when you say blowout do you mean styling it not actually blow drying it? Gosh I'm so interested in this air drying damage! I've avoided using heat tools for years now... At least 5 years at this point and my hair still accumulates insane amounts of damage. I cannot grow my hair past my shoulders because it all breaks off. I do nothing to my hair whatsoever and only wash it every 3/4 days. I stopped using protein products to see if that's the problem, I tried using protein products. Anything I've tried has ended in complete failure and me ending up with a short Bob again. I'd love to know much more about sirdry damage because I'm starting to think that's what's wrong with my hair.

Try the capillary schedule. You hair needs 3 components Hydration, moisture and reconstruction. Get a good mask for each. Reconstruction are all masks that have protein and/or amino acids. Using the capillary schedule will allow you to rotate the use of these masks so your hair has a complete and balance diet each week/month. I have 2a/b hair and I blow dry at low heat almost every time I wash my hair. I make sure to use high quality products and my hair is finally growing past shoulder length! Aleluya!

I am going through the same thing, I used to never dry my hair to avoid the heat, and my ends are still see-through if I let it grow a little longer. I just tried blowdrying on low, but it gets super frizzy since I have no clue how to do it😅

Do you have tips for frizzy roots? I have type 4 high porosity hair and my roots are extremely frizzy. I wash and deep condition my hair once a week because I exercise regularly and sweat a lot.

Do you rinse your hair and apply leave in throughout the week? If you’re not, the puffy roots could be because the salt from your sweat is drying out the hair at the root.

@@thisblackgirloverhere9013 I used to moisturize every few days, but I stopped for about 3-6 months. I would only moisturize it when it I had time. For the past month, I've been getting back to my old routine. So I'm hoping the roots will go back to normal.

Adriannn Adriann No, you have to RINSE and then moisturize. You have to rinse that salt out often before it dries out your roots. Just remoisturizing does nothing by itself.

Try a protein treatment. I read a book saying it bonds to the hair and fills the gaps in the hair strands

@@Mariamfromunitedstates yeah I heard good things about that and also aphogee. I make sure to deep condition with a protein conditioner mixed with oils every week but I'm black, so our hair may be different (black hair is more brittle). For u maybe every 6 weeks. But u should try experimenting. I hope this helps🙂 also for protein u can use things around the house like eggs. Just with eggs make sure not to use heat so it doesn't cook in ur hair.
@francescablee3366

Also make sure to have a balance between moisture and protein. Protein binds to ur hair and fills in the gaps making it strong, and moisture makes it flexible to prevent it from snapping and breakage
